REVIEWS OF SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital IN Illinois

The staff that worked with my son were over worked and in an impossible situation. I can tell you he was brought into the ER almost unconscious, he was made to get off the gurney and sit in the waiting room. In any other hospital he would have been seen and triaged immediately. His memory after a grand Mal seizure is always bad, but no one provided any assistance. Luckily we were there quickly. He NEVER saw a doctor or went past the waiting room. We left at 10 pm without results from his blood test. He had been in the ER since 7. He fell down a flight of stairs during his seizure, there was no attempt to assess a head injury even though he had two large bumps. The conditions for everyone insurance or not we're deplorable. I hope some realizes there liability and lack of care.

Kevin Voyles

The nursing , doctors and other staff members were absolutely great. 8 Days in ICU , and they treated me with respect and provided excellent care.

Kristi Amin

Yes I know the hours of waiting in the emergency room or long I know that the hospital was older but that takes nothing away from the love and the caring staff there. Most of the reviews that are negative are based on how long they waited in the ER but the staff and how compassionate they are whenever they finally get to you is everything.

Been here since 9 30am. Still waiting as I type. Its 4:56 p.m. I feel kinda unsafe in here. Security has had to kick two people out. One ended up throwing a chair thru the glass after being put out. I understand you have to wait sometimes but really!! This is horrible.

This hospital does not compare to some of the best on cleanliness, professionalism, and saving lives. It's a very depressing spirit in this hospital.

In emergency room for 26 hours in severe pain Not a great start. Scary filthy and admin staff were not in the slightest bit helpful. The nursing staff when you were finally seen were caring and helpful. Dealing with an overload that is beyond anyone’s abilities

My name is marcus pool, i arrived here with an infection in my spine, in the most horrible pain,I absolutely am awed by the care and experience the doctors, surgeons, and nurses provide, Just amazing..ive been given special care to knowing every procedure that has been performed, from the pain if any to the recovery of that procedure. All staff are very nice, ive actually formed a friendship to some whom i just wish i could take home and make a part of my life, i will truely miss alot of the staff here, what true Angels of life to dedicate thier lives and careers to the care of us needing medical help. Thank You all at the University of St Louis Hospital, God bless you and keep you, I will really miss some of you that ive gotten to know, but for now ,I have you for 5 more weeks according to the Doctors and surgeons.

They don't help people unless you have money. I called them over the phone and told me they have on call dentist and lied to me after being we don't dental uncall docs made me wait 8 hours to tell me they won't even prescribed antibiotics for the toothpain cause they said quote it will make you sick if you keep taking it. Worst place ever! It's a scam! If you have Medicaid don't come here ever! They are only about money!

Lisa Guedry

They really got down too the problem and put me on a IV and made me really feel good and comfortable while I was there and very nice Nurses and Doctors!

This hospital is joke, my friend is there from accident last Saturday night when i went up there Tuesday to see him they haven't even clean the blood off his face, and they make you pay for parking any other hospital wouldn't make you pay, this is not right. After hes out of the hospital i will not returning to this one.

Came in with my boyfriend for his seizures (epileptic) and 7 hours later he's still "sedated" No answers as to what's going on. Now they closed the curtain to this tiny, filthy er room, news flash cloth curtains dont stop sound they just cause clostrophobic people to feel trapped. I complained to the hospital via email last time he had to come in because they heavy drugged him and kicked him to the street. Not do much as a sorry email Like other people said unless you have private insurance, you dont matter here. From now on I will require emts to go to barnes.

Brought my fiance to sluh following a drunk driver hit and run. And the place is disgusting bandages on the waiting room chairs. Old food with bugs on it in the corner. And they allow the patients to be disruptive and fight and cuss everyone out. Would not recommend to anyone. Oh and I'm a former employee... How far this place has fallen.

lutisha rios

I was transferred this past week from our local ER. The staff on 9th floor (ICU and 9 South) we're outstanding! They treated me with much respect and just all around care and friendliness. Thank you.

janet bolin

They should not allow children into waiting room on 6th floor It is bad enough waiting for 5 or 6 hour in waiting room with out having to hear little kid crying and fighting so had to go to a different waiting room where there was no phone for the nurse to call us and give up date on progress of surgery

Good medical care. Parking garage is a headache

Staff is great, received explanation for everything and how long my tests would take

House keepers are very disrespectful I understand they have a job to do but are very rude and loud when they come in when you have a loved one laying there trying to get rest they dont say excuse me or anything act like your in their way just very disrespectful

My dad has been here for over a month and I wish we could move him. The staff on the 7th floor is rude. They don't respond to call. If you approach them for help it's almost like you are bothering them. This is a place for you to heal and anything less than superior customer is unacceptable. They are not living up to Slu core values. Then there is a daily issues with food service. The order is NEVER right and if u call to get the items that they fail to deliver they never come. I very disappointed in slu service and hope we never have to come here again. Oh one last thing I forgot to add dirty room. I had to ask for his room to be cleaned 3 times now

I don't know why there are so many bad reviews. This hospital has the most kind and caring staff, nurses and doctors. I have a loved one here who is in ICU. She came in thru ER. Has been here since June 14th. I wish our hospital was as knowledgeable and respectful as this one. I would highly recommend this hospital to any of my loved ones.

Cool Loaomd

This Hospital is horrible. We were in the ER and the waiting room and hallways were filled with people. The waiting time was around 5+ hours. People around me said they have been there for 7 hours. No drinks no refreshments. Not enough hand sanitizer dispensers. I live in Saint Charles and when me or my family go to the emergency room we never waited more than 2 hours at the max ! Pray to god you or your family don’t have to come here.

I went to go visit my family member at the SLU hospital a couple times and each time was the same result very rude staff, terrible conditions, and a rotting parking garage .When you enter the hospital to check in you are greeted by a gentleman who is very rude,He does not make eye contact along with a geouchu tone of voice.Once you get past the gentleman with the awful welcome ,You head to elevators that look like they literally haven't been cleaned in years ,Walking throughout the building let alone the paitents room makes you want to shower in bleach by how disgusting the building it.If you manage to come across housekeeping and say "hello" and hold the elevator open for them ,they ignore you and stay on thier phones. How about cleaning the bathrooms? Went to go to the ladies room and let me say it is atrocious.Where to begin? Well let's start with the stalls walls and door ,the marks and what looks like feces could easily be scrubbed off and cleaned. How about the sink? Covered in hair and the water stained mirror to the point where I couldn't see my own reflection. The toliets had a flys chilling on the seat,I immediately walked out due to these conditions. Finally , after visiting my family member who could barley talk due to the condition he was in .I waited at the desk and was passed by doctor's and nurses ,no one stopped to ask why I was at the desk or if they could assist me in anything after 5 minutes of waiting I gave up and just left... HOPEFULLY this all gets fixed and maybe cleaned up ,until then I would never ever ever want to be seen at this hospital.

This is my primary hospital for care. Today a ultra sound was done for my primary doctor. Registration quick and transfer for test quickly with results approved for final review.

This place showed us what exceptional healthcare is all about. The doctor's were incredibly nice, caring individuals, who really made us feel like they truly cared about my boyfriend. The nurses really went out of their way to make sure they took care of him and made him as comfortable as possible for his situation. Whether I asked one of his nurse's or doctor's a question, they always had knowledgeable answers and took the time to thoroughly explain what was going on to ensure I understood. Awesome job 9th floor team (including the ICU), y'all are amazing and a blessing to healthcare!

My first visit I believe under emergency situation. The ER staff seem slow.. had enough people I think. I was being me.. silly. Someone apparently didn't knew how to find my blood vain. Because she cause more pain than why I was there... a Lime Scooter accident. I hate the concept of getting my clothing removed.. especially by a woman and my injury was well above my waist. It was nice damage inwhich at the time I didn't see. But took a long time for care without advise of what they plan to do and finally doning it. Still no real explanations of why such a delay with asking if anyone Sitting on a hard uncomfortable ER bed basically naked with only a hospital gown and 2 blankets. Ugh.. not my ideal care.. After a while of my butt getting uncomfortable with not having my cloths on. I started to explain the desire of removing the unneeded medical stuff on me. To have a medical professionals or I would. Finally most was removed and I started getting dressed. The doctor seems surprised but acted it was okay for me to get dressed. But, that would of been a problem if he didn't want me dressed. I was too uncomfortable to stay undressed. It took way too long to get glue on my head for the wound and later Later way too long about getting the IV needle out. Yeah my visit was not good all around.. The visit made me feel like that they was trying to milk me or my insurance for more money... Bad part.. now I'm in more pain than I was at the hospital with an old one started back up.. again.

This hospital has to be the dirtiest hospital I’ve ever been in the staff are very unfriendly and the security are sleeping and rude what a hell joke I feel sorry for the people stuck at this place.

Randy Hurt

This is the worst ssm hospital in the country they have people laying out in the halls in wheelchairs no beds at all they are level 1 trama hospital listen barnes is much better than that for sure

qais siddiqi

Someone should explain them what the emergency is, the case was serious vomiting they kept us many hours in a waiting list. After couple hours the give a tablet to put under tongue. They just take care how to charge from insurance. Once you entered in to room, immediately they take insurance info so that they could charge from insurance and then all will disappear including doctors. When you ask someone to help nobody listen. What a sham to the management of this hospital.

After an elective outpatient procedure, I was awaiting a bill in the mail which never came. I assumed it had gotten tied up in insurance. Finally, months later, I get a phone call from SSM Health St. Louis, asking for payment. When I explained I hadn't yet received a bill, the agent checked and told me "we've been mailing them out, but they've been returned to sender." Turns out they had my address wrong. I told the agent my correct address, and she promised it would be updated and mailed to the new address. Months later, same phone call. They still had the original address, and were still mailing bills to the old, wrong address. I had the agent update the address AGAIN, and I finally received my bill a couple weeks later. I immediately sent a check in the mail, and informed the agent that I had sent it. She assured me that she had noted thus in my account, and that it would be fine. It wasn't fine. I just got a call from an agent of a collections agency. I will NEVER return to SSM Health if I can avoid it, simply because of the sheer incompetence of their billing department.

Been here since 7:46 last night . Told 4 people within the first 2 hours of being there i was in pain and got no results. I was transferred from gateway because gateway told me i needed a stint in my kidney . the doctors here said i dont need one and have been waiting all night to get a Room. As i was admittted still in the er and they said since they wont put a stint in they just wanna send me back to gateway where i came from. What a joke!

My husband, Vince was operated on for a AA and in Critical Care for almost a month. The Doctors and all the nurses were no less than awesome every minute of the day. Unfortunately my 45yr of marriage, husband died but by no fault of these wonderful Doctors. They tried so hard and were so caring and thorough. They kept me and my family informed every step of the way. I would have wrote sooner but as you can imagine I've been very distraught since his death February 16th. I cannot thank St. Louis University Hospital for all your loving care on my husband. Thank You so much and God Bless all those ICU Nurses and Doctors.

Main fault is parking. Mandatory "suggested tip" $2. Back Dr parking (office appts) valet free. Medical services 4-5 star. Specialists 5 star.

This the most filthy and overcrowded ER I have ever seen. Most "patients" in the ER waiting room were all waiting for a prescription for their "pain pills". Every one int he waiting room wears a blood pressure arm band...like its standard to walk in and slap that on and take a seat. Some people had said they had been there for 18+ hours! In the WAITING ROOM! Did I mention how filthy it was? After your wait to actually get into the ER itself, it is packed with patients laying in chairs, rooms and hallways! It's no wonder the staff is stressed and not always helpful. Never ever again, under any circumstances will I visit this hospital.

Djinn W

After 30 min on hold to schedule an appointment was transferred to the admin affice, another 30 min on hold, got half way through registration and call was disconnected. No attempt to call me back so i tried again and the exact same thing happened. Absolute worst hold "music" anywhere period. It is not music, its a never ending commerical for their college. I will ask my insurance company for a different doctor since i can't get past the gate keepers to see the good doctors everyone here praises.

Berni Mcguire

My son was hit by a car and seriously injured. The care he received from the ED staff and everyone working on 6 South was excellent. The entire staff was helpful, kind and answered all of our questions. Our family was treated with respect and greeted with smiles. Thank you for your hard work and caring hearts.

There are vet hospitals that treat animals better than this hospital treats human beings. Unsafe and poorly maintained waiting room, ER Staff are mostly terrible and unprofessional. No matter what you're paying for parking, that is if the parking attendant is even there to let you out of the garage. Bypass this hospital at all cost.

Been sitting in er since 10 it’s now 3:30 still waiting I been moved to the back to only be placed in the hallway in a bed several staff members walked passed and hasn’t said one word to me the only person who acknowledged me was the security he was kind enough to get me a blanket and pillow

Jessica Jane

Although I don't work here nor been a patient I'm sure the head people of SSM Health/SLU would fall out if they knew the bullying, gossip, hostile and uncomfortable work environment that is allowed by group leaders (who may be in on it herself) to the point many have left and people come home from work physically upset, the bullies are adults by the way smh workplace bullying shouldn't be tolerated at all but this is what happens when you work with hoodlums SHAMEFUL this is the caliber of people representing your company and brand SLU

Christina Cole

Pay to park. No matter how sick you are.. then a long walk.. The waiting room for the ER IS very very small and smells like a potra- potty.. if you weren't sick before you went in.. Sit there 10 minutes and you'll have at least 2 types of influenza.

Operator was rude and did not greet or introduce herself, when I contacted the receptionist in HR for questions about an externship, she did not allow me to finish and interrupted me just to say no. Talk about customer service.

My Doctor sent me here for some tests. 1st of all getting in here is like the zoo and parking is just as worse then to get in the building and you have to go through a check in process which I guess maybe I had a new person because there was two other people that walked back there at the same time as me and I was the last one still sitting there waiting to come up here my appointment was at 9:30 I didn't get up here to be seen until 952 so check in down there took that long then I get up here on the third floor and I have to check in again up here same question that was asked downstairs same questions ask up here it kind of doesn't make sense now I'm late for the appointment and I hate being late when I got here on time early I don't think I just have the patience to be in doctor's office with all these different people germs NOT A GOOD EXPERIENCE

I am employee of SLU. The hospital charged me for $1427.95. As the amount is huge for me. I paid twice to clear the bills, which are $1000 and $427.95. Then the hospital insisted that I did not pay for $427.95 and asked "United Collection Bureau, Inc" to force me pay the $427.95 again. Even though I work for SLU, I will not visit theirs.

I've never in my life seen such poor representation of stewardship, compassion, and respect in all my years here on Earth. My husband came to the ER. early Sat. evening due to complications he inquired after having an abalision surgery on thurs. We arrived around 8pm and due to the capacity we were still in the ER at 5pm Sun evening which lead me write this review.. Slu never showed any patient, visitor, any of the things they claim to represent. I watched a nurese attempt to obtain a blood sample from a patient who was under some type of sedation , the nurse never had gloves on while obtaining the sample and i saw her USE a tube that fell on the floor in a very high traffic area on that patient. The staff seemed to be only interested in what each had going on personally. As a patient was leaving he dropped his discharg paper work i saw a nurse see the person drop the papers and never alert the patient. She actually walked and rolled over the paper work. As well as the intake nurse who was surfing the web from company computer from the time she arrived. Security walked around rapping and at one point were horse playing in the halls. I only mentioned half of the mess thats going on in that palce. It's very sad to see and no not everyone is involved with this bad behavior but the saying goes one bad apple spoils the bunch. I pray they clean their act up and fast....signed a concerned NURSE!!!!

I just don’t give zero stars because the nurses have been extremely nice. But the doctors, saying they are incompetent is a compliment!! I’ve been vomiting all day, right leg in unbearable pain, I can’t walk or move without feeling horrible pain in my right quadrant. The ER Doctor kept telling me tht I have a few things and later on saying I did not. I ended up being admitted and the new doctor had no idea why. In fact, he even said That was unware of my leg pain. He said nothing more than an OK. And left !! I have to ask for pain medicine to ease the pain but no one can’t tell me a diagnosis. I still in pain !!! Worst service !!

My wife has had EIGHT heart surgerys. EIGHT. They can't get it right. The hospital staff on each visit as been subpar to terrible. After her pacemaker surgery(4th heart surgery) her right lung was punctured. After complaining and constantly insisting, they finally decided to examine her, and figured out her lung was punctured. This was after the nurse accused her of being a "druggie" for being for pain meds. Unfortunately we don't have any other options because of our insurance.

Had shooting pain in my head for the last 2 weeks. Got admitted to floor. Couple hours later attending physician leaned over my bed and said, " You're going to get a big bill insurance isn't paying for this." She CANCELLED ALLl ordered testing. Following day she stood beside my bed and shouted "I CAN'T FIX YOUR LIFE." If you don't want to be abused or demoralized this is not the place for you.!!!. I must add to this review because regretfully I spoke with people at SLU today. For the past week I have been trying to find someone to address the denial of care by the neurologist mentioned above. I have yet to find any such person. Spoke with multiple people including social work who earlier agreed to assist me with home health care and therapy as I had a double mastectomy and other disabilities. This promised assistance has since disappeared and all they have to offer now is a phone number to some other agency. Pharmacy can't reach physician to fill new prescription. I DON'T KNOW WHAT SERVICE THIS ORGANIZATION PROVIDES BUT IT CERTAINLY IS NOT HEALTHCARE.

Sarah Stainbrook

Had a spinal fusion here followed by four nights in 6th floor inpatient hospital. Nurses are so overworked that it frequently took 30 minutes for a nurse to come to my room after I pressed the call button. They are frequently an hour late to administer scheduled medications. Terrible pain management (in part due to a misunderstanding with my doctor, but mostly due to missed doses and slow nurses.) Spent 4 days in so much pain that I frequently screamed for hours only to be told that nothing could be done, not even a sedative. I was in muscle spasms so bad I couldn't move and they refused to give me a catheter, telling me to hold it for half an hour until meds kicked in and walking to the bathroom was only excruciating instead of impossible. Some have suggested that their terrible care is due to Medicaid; I'm on good private health insurance and was still treated this badly, so this is definitely a systemic issue. Was visited by a case manager and am following up with her about my complaints; may update this review if anything happens with that.

This hospital is the absolute worst. Can't get anything done. Can't get in nor even relay a message to the doctor I was seeing. Yet they keep charging me bills with out helping me. They send me emails for online patient satisfaction surveys, but the links don't work, so I have no way to complain. Been calling 2x per week since 3 weeks before Christmas trying to get help from my doctor. I don't know if the staff isn't telling her or her nurse my problems or what. Found out from Walgreens she had called in a prescription for me randomly when I hadn't even seen her. The script was for something unrelated to my chronic problems. Had to go back to seeing my original specialist who mistakenly referred me to this horrendous place. If I left my health in their hands, I would be dead by now. I am not paying the bills because they neglected me and never tried to help me. Not to mention their terrible lack of organization when it comes to misscheduling and accidentally canceling or changing my appointments.

Was here for 13 days on my deathbed with billlyrubens of 35. Left my lunch unfishished once and told me an hour for lettuce and onion. Left my lunch tray next to my bed until almost 3 pm.(I had to ask it to be removed). Day before I left, they stoppped all pain pills and used back-patches that worked for “12 hours”... once the 12 hours were done I was told that I had no nurse because they were doing it as a group lol. Upon calling, they hung up on me and refused to service me

Would not use this hospital to save mylife. After seeing the care that niece received, the rudeness of the caretaker. They really need to find a different profession.

Trauma center was great stopped my mom's internal bleeding without surgery. Monitored her condition and got her stabilized and diagnosed her injuries. After she left ICU things went downhill fast. There's no communication between doctors and teams. Trying to talk to a doctor is very difficult. They are only available once a day. They had un properly trained people moving my elderly mother with spinal fractures and pelvic fractures. Didn't take care of her hygiene needs properly or promptly. Changed her meds without consulting the patient.

Hi..It is 2:26 AM and I am in my son’s room on the 6th floor at SLU. He was in a car wreck and has some fractures in his neck and back. He was transferred here by a doctor in another hospital south of St Louis. After reading reviews online we were a little leary of leaving him here without a family member staying with him in case he needed something. His care has been adequate, but not outstanding. It’s Dec. 22, And I hope he can go home for Christmas. This place feels old and depressing. Hardly any of the staff smiles or seems to be happy to be working here. I’ve visited a lot of hospitals in my day, spent a lot of time in a Chicago-based facility over an eight year period staying with my sister as she battled bone cancer and all that entails. I guess they set a really high standard for me and what a really good hospital looks like, smells like, feels like, and acts like. If you are fulfilling the role of a patient caregiver there, you are considered an asset to the patient and the staff...that is missing here. The nurses have no idea how much I am doing instead of pushing the call button asking them for assistance. They’ve made it clear that I cannot sleep in the room since it is semi-private, so here I sit. Not very sleepy, just tired. My son is sleeping pretty well, that’s what matters. When he does stir, I help him with anything he needs and if I absolutely have to...we push THE button. I tried going to the waiting room to rest, but there was only a man in there and he started talking to me that he was out of cigarettes...I heard enough, and came back down to the son’s room. I even wondered if the man might be a homeless guy who had maybe sneaked in, he looked pretty woolly. I digress. Anyway, I really cannot recommend this facility to anyone especially if you have a choice in the matter. It’s pretty rough, and not especially clean or friendly. However, I will say that they have good coffee in the cafeteria. Just don’t expect the tables or dining room floor to be clean or sanitary. December 23, 2018, 4:00 PM I MUST add to my review. This morning my son needed to use the bedpan and be boosted back to the head of his bed. He used the call button and an aid named Bryant L. answered the call. My son asked to be boosted and said he needed to use the bedpan. The guy basically “hung up” up on my son; literally. No response, nothing! And, no one came to his room either. 5 minutes later, I went to the desk and spoke with the charge nurse who simply said they would get to him. I explained the treatment shown to my son and she claimed she would chart it. I waited 5 more minutes and nothing, pushed the call button again. Same scenario, same Bryant L; he hung up on me too. Nothing. Went to desk and the charge nurse was telling Bryant L about a new car she’d bought as I was walking up to the desk! They were really worried about a 21 year old trauma patient, weren’t they? Maybe she charted that, too. Bryant L finally made eye contact with me and said someone would come down. He did. He asked me to leave the room. William, the man in the other bed was very kind and humble to everyone, especially the staff. When I stepped back in to the hospital room he told me they were very rough with and rude to my son. And then he told the charge nurse they same thing he told me. No apologies, nothing from her. VERY OUTRAGED AND DISAPPOINTED with SLU. SHAME TO THE STAFF, AND THE HOSPITAL FOR SUCH BEHAVIOR NOT BEING ADDRESSED. Inexcusable. I plan on making a formal complaint; they probably won’t even reprimand anyone, but I have to speak up, not just for my son, but all patients who are subject to being so callously disrespected. I GIVE THEM A ZERO for 6th floor patient care.

My mother waited 18 hours in the ER for a ROOM! We NEVER found out what caused her pulmonary distress, the doctors just kept throwing different things at us, when we finally thought she was stable and went home we were called back less than an hour later. Our mothers blood pressure skyrocketed and her lungs filled with fluid, STILL NO DIAGNOSIS! She couldn’t go to the ICU because that was full so she was a step down from ICU, when she decided she had enough we waited TEN HOURS FOR COMFORT CARE AND HAD TO WATCH HER LINGER!! The nursing staff was compassionate and caring but the hospital and most of the doctors were more than unsatisfactory!!! My mother died and I’m wondering, if the hospital hadn’t been negligent, if she’d still be alive.

My uncle died and these ppl didn’t let us view his body wouldn’t give us anything but had the nerve to ask if we wanted to donate his organs. It’s the next day and we still haven’t seen him. We keep calling and calling and they keep telling us they are too busy. We are already under a lot of stress and pain. They didn’t care about our family or our situation.

The ER is over run by the sheer volume of people who come here for whatever reason. The staff took great care of my husband after being sent to the ER from a specialist appointment. The wait was over six hours to get an ER room but he was kept in triage until a room was open. The staff handles the chaotically stressful mess with pose and purpose. I am thankful for the quality of care my husband received despite the hectic pace of the ER. I hope the new building takes into account the issues the doctors, nurses, and support staff face in the confined space and work to improve it. -_-_-_-_-_-. My husband has been transferred to SLU for care since his last visit last month. Currently his medical needs are pretty significant. His stay in 8ICU was great and he was very well taken care of. He's now on a regular floor and his daytime nurse is fabulous. Cirrhosis is not something that any one wants to go throu
