The only thing worse than this God forsaken hospital is the pathetic ambulance that takes you there. Inept is putting it mildly. If you enjoy your life and want to live, I would not move to Hilo. God forbid you or your children have a medical emergency.

We did't satisfied service from Emergency room. The reason is below. 1. They took the blood but they didn't do blood test. or We couldn't receive any report of it. 2. Physician didn't know the reason why I was sick. and asked have CT. But CT result was good. And told us it looks like a muscle spasm. and did Tylenol prescription. 3. I suffered next 5 day being worse and feeling cold. So wend to the other hospital in Kona (Hawaii Family Physicians). Doctor told me It is thyroid problem. Now I've got right prescription and can see heath getting better. I can't pay money with wrong prescription. They charged me $730 for Emergency Physician Statement.

After waiting 2 hours for 1 dr to tell me they cant do an xray cause it wont show everytjing they need to see and need a c-scan, and then another dr comes n says an xray should be fine, then telling me i cant just go there for narcotics, even tho i refused meds from the beginning when they tried to push meds on me when i first got in the room, and just want to know what the fk is going on.Not everyone is looking for a quick fix lady, some of us actually want to stop shh!t from getting worse, or help so they can get on with there lives!

A case manager at Hilo Medical center was absolutely useless. She did not care about a long-term patient's care and basically threw the responsibility on to the housemate. Highly do not recommend the case managers that work at Hilo Medical. Irresponsible and with such attitude.

Absolutely some of the worst medical care I have ever recieved in my life. They treated me like I was extremely insignificant. (Mainly nurses) Went in for emergency surgery and they paired me with an elderly woman who needed assistance 4-6 times all through out the night, turning on all of the lights in the room, not only talking very loudly, but there was even a point at 4am where a nurse & her had a 30 minute conversation about hiking while I was right next to them trying to sleep. Absolutely INCREDIBLY inconsiderate and rude. & Of course, no day time napping for this same reason. In the morning after only getting 3 hours of sleep, i was awakened at 7am by the nurses opening all the blinds and saying hello to the patient next to me. From that point on I had outstanding migranes, naeusea and kidney pain for hours. I sat in bed vomitting, crying, hyperventaliting for hours while staff did nothing. Worse part is that when I asked to please switch rooms because I need to rest, the lady told me 5 seperate times she had to speak to her suporvisor (i saw 3 open beds 8 hours earlier). Afterwards she said there was no extra space and that we could possibly switch beds while i was in surgery with my roommate so she wouldnʻt bother me going to the bathroom so much in the middle of the night, considering my bed was closest to the bathroom. I come back from surgery and beds are the same. The ladyʻs daughter said she wanted her to have the view of the window even though it was going to be dark in an hour, her mom was getting discharged tomorrow morning AND she witnessed how much pain I was in all day. Her mom was fine. Only needed help walking. Just absolutely ridicuous. Lastly, after my procedure and the beds not being changed I asked to be discharged in order to sleep a good nights sleep without constant interruptipn. They advised me to stay because I was still vomiting. They told me they would give me everything I needed to help me fall asleep, relax and have a good nights sleep. Boy was I wrong for believing them. After being woken up by this lady and nurses loudy conversing, another 3 times from 9pm-10:40pm (one converstion was about plants & bamboo...) and most astonishingly after expressing my concern about not being able to sleep at all MULTIPLE times.. I have had it and just left. If you have the oppurtunity to not go to this hospital. Take it.

First of all came to ER to see my dad and first thing that I see is this lady who was asleep at the desk who was startled when the door opened. Then sitting in the wait room, trying to get some rest and you have this security guard who’s talking about his life story with the ER registrar, and talk about professionalism. Either they are not aware we can hear every word being said, about how not so clean the bathrooms are too how he used to be locked up by his family. But that was not all, his vocabulary only consisted of the F bomb. I mean seriously, I don’t want to be hearing about your story and the F here, F there while trying to focus on what’s happening to my family. Keep that business when your off the clock not within the confinement of the ER room. Where has the professionalism gone for a facility such as this! Either make that privacy window thicker so no one else car hear what’s going on back there or train your employees better on how they represent your company!

We brought our daughter in with a 103.8 fever they did no further test other than swab her throat , nose and look in her ears. Right befor they released us they check her temp it went down to 103.5 told ud they dont know what is is and let us go. We did our follow up with her doctor he had us do xrays blood and urine samples. Two days after our visit to the er we found out she has Pneumonia..... if the er would have done all that we could known then and have her start her antibiotics. ..... why did they let us go when she had such a high fever with nothing but an i dont know what it is?... dont the go to school for this.....

The doctor and nurses in the ED were amazing and knew what they were doing when it came to treating my boyfriend's infection. They were kind, funny, and treated us with the upmost respect. I give them two thumbs up!!

My stay at the Psychiatric Ward at Hilo Medical Center was loathsome. The security guards everywhere at the center make haste to slander the patients as much as possible. The psychiatrist I spoke to was on a screen because despite being able to pay for dozens of miserable security guards, the administration apparently cannot afford a SINGLE psychiatrist. The nurse practitioner who checked up on me at the psychiatric ward itself was indubitably on drugs and slandered me for not exercising enough and literally laughed at a separate patient in the ward during our appointment. The worst part: I ordered a tofu sandwich for lunch and they didn't give me any bread... just a large hunk of fried, unflavored tofu.

Had big islands new year's baby Jan1 2018, and the women helping me after my csection were amazing always wanted to help feed my baby and rock him to sleep . I can't wait to come here to deliver my next soon!

Too many negative experiences to list them all. First experience with them, they nearly killed my husband. Second emergency they almost caused my sons g-tube stoma to close up. Here now with hubby on the verge of catastrophe, praying they send him to Oahu to get some answers.

At Hilo medical center I received the worst level of care that I have ever received. I have been to third world countries and received much better care. I fell into a lava tube and tore up my legs.. very deep wounds. Dr. Silverman didn’t even look at the injury, just peeked behind the bandages and told me that I need antibiotics and left, never to be seen agian. He gave me no advise for healing, no new bandages or antibiotic cream. Because the cuts were on my butt the doctor seemed awkward and very brief. The must unprofessional and unhelpful doctor I have ever seen. I want to ask Dr. Silverman why he became a doctor.. because I think he may have forgotten.

I came to the ER with no feeling on one side of my face, and deafness on the same side. I received care immediately. Doctor, nurses, and imaging staff were empathetic, attentive, and professional.

I was admitted for emergency surgery over Christmas. I was there 5 nights. Though the star rating says "loved it", I can't really say that, but I can say that the care I received from the ER through surgery and recovery was top-notch and professional. All the staff was very attentive and clear and I was made to feel like they cared. I don't ever want to repeat the experience but if I had to, I would have no problems with returning to Hilo Medical Center.

Went in today feeling like i had the flu or respiratory infection. Went into the er and it was empty so i got to the back pretty fast. They did poor vitals. Doctor came in super fast and shook my hands he smelt like urine! Strong old urine! Did no swab test or anything, then told me i can basically look at you and see you poss have the flu but since its been 3 days im not gonna perscribe you tamiflu. Then he said he doesnt like tamiflu and its just gonna gove me nausea vomiting and diarrhea. He told me to take sudifed, ibuprofen and tylenol together and il be fine walked out sent me home with a fever and no meds or anything. Mind you im a surgical tech thats exposed to patients daily. He ran no tests, no chest xray or anything. My symptoms: headache, dizziness, ear pain, congestion, fever, chills, throat pain, chest pain and pressure, body ache. Im laying here tonight still hurting with a fever and foolish chest pain!

The new security measures are for what purpose I do not know. Maybe we live on the mainland attitude. After getting past that, I am forced to wait to see my own child who was brought here from school in ambulance for 20 minutes now. Still waiting. The front desk people are about as helpful as warts

Don't know or remember anything from a bad airplane crash April 14th. But found out I would have been dead without their professionalism. What can I say...... thank you from the bottom of my heart.!!!

I worked in the HMC ICU as an RN. I was totally disheartened to witness blatent disrespect by physicians toward nurses and patients, and further shocked when this kind of unprofessional and unsafe behavior was supported by administrators. I would not recommend working at HMC or trusting your medical care to their staff.

Mary Espejo

Everyone there is amazing. They are caring and concerned. My own experience has been great and a few weeks ago they took care of my son after a freak accident at home that could have been much worse if not for the fast acting Emergency Department and the awesome Dr Hansen from the Bone and Joint Clinic! Thank you all.

Great service for my wife Winona B. for her last days of life. Everyone went above and beyond to make her comfortable as possible. The most important thing to have is a Life Care Directive on file at the hospital. The doctors and staff knew exactly what my wife wanted and did just that. Not a easy thing to go thru but, thanks for everything HMC did for my wife Noni. Mahalo Bill B

Please excuse this late entry. I went into the ER mid-May while I was there visiting. I was in a lot of pain and from intake, all the way to when I left, I really felt the care and professionalism. I'm really grateful to a nurse called Dennis. He held my hand while I was getting treated and took care of me until I left. Thank you so much for your kindness Dennis. I am eternally grateful. And to the rest of the team working in the ER that Sunday morning on 5.14.17, thank you very much for your care. You guys all rock!!!

First off by saying, I gave birth to my first child and the epidural that I got was the worst experience ever, I get it’s there job to bend you in half so they can do what they need to do however from what my husband told me when they did it blood was spitting out of my back, and they did i it a second time! Without me knowing about it and during this whole time I’m crying in agony my neck hurts so bad the nurse keeps pushing me down to the part where I can’t breathe and I start to go dizzy and almost pass out and I’m crying out asking if there finished and the nurse is pushing me more down saying your doing a good job and during that whole time the nurse and the guy doing my epidural are talking stories and when he messed up all he said was “whoops”, and to make matters even worst they have a room after you deliver baby, they knew this room was broken AC wise like it was freezing cold!!! Not only was me and my husband cold but my poor baby was too!! I asked if they can fix the AC kinda hinting for another room and there like sorry we know the AC is broken and walked out of the room!! They shouldn’t be giving a family and a new baby a freezing room! They should close it off until the AC is fixed! Also on another note, I wanted my labor to be secretive as in if someone calls to come to me first to ask if I wanted them to have general info on how I’m doing, someone called I’m not gonna state who but basically asked for my room number and whatever! And they gave it to it! What if it was someone dangerous to my family? Your just gonna let some random person call and ask where my room number is? At this point I’m furious! And do everything I can to make sure no visitors come, and hurried up to go home because I didn’t want to be there anymore I was sick of it all, and then the people from medata names joleen gave me the hardest time of my life she was 1 very rude about my child birth certificate taking to long to write down what my daughter is, mind you I feel so sick I just gave birth she had no sympathy! I wrote down that I’m Cherokee Indian and she crosses it off and says Cherokee is not a tribe! And makes me sign it and gave me additute for taking to long and I ended up forgetting to put Hawaiian but due to her poor education on not knowing Cherokee Indian I am having the most hardest time of my life for the past 4-5 months!! On fixing my daughters birth certificate trying to obtain proof of Cherokee Indian from my grandmother who has alhtimerz and there stating we need to know he parents name but no one of my family knows who her father is! I have spoken to someone to take care of the Cherokee matter but all they can do is train there people. I wish I discussed the rest of this when I did but had forgotten because I had to tend to my child. Just wanting to state that I have never had this much of a bad experience in my life! And I hope to god that I don’t ever go to this hospital for my next child!

I am very pleased with the help I received at Hilo Medical Center yesterday. I was taken in via Emergency quickly. All of the staff, from the triage nurse and other assistants, to radiology and doctors were warm, welcoming and professional.

When I was there they did not have enough staff for me to stay overnight and I was flown to a better hospital on a different island. When my brother was there and I was visiting I saw what looked like it could have been a old blood stain on the floor.

I have been admitted on 2 ocassions. Both times with life threatening conditions. The last time was a week ago. They staff was top notch. My surgeon was awesome and surgery went great. My gall bladder was removed, withing a few hours after my arrival to the ER. I was made as comfortable as possible and the surgery went well. I was home the next day. I would have died in about a week had it not been for the staff in the ER. Earlier that day I had seen a physician at a clinic, and was told I needed more Valium as it was anxiety, get some tests and see in a month. About 1:45 am I asked my husband to take me to the ER. I have been to this hospital on several occasions and have always been happy with the care.

Melissa Wight

The whole staff was so believing amazing. Can't say enough. The er staff watched my 6 old kid when I had to have emergency surgery. Every person in that hospital has a beautiful soul. Thank you for saving my life.
