My sister is on a weekly chemo regimen of 2 weeks on and 1 week off. She has been on this schedule for the last year. She had been going to the Orange infusion center until the end of June of this year, where it is a well oiled machine. Customer service and efficiency at a high level. Her Oncologist moved to the Midwest so she selected a new oncologist based at New Haven Smilow. Clinical staff in New Haven are excellent but the scheduling and sign-in staff are dysfunctional. They cause my sister non-stop stress at every visit. She either “doesn’t have an appointment” “you don’t have blood work scheduled” .......on and on. I find it incredible that these appointments are not “canned” with all the chemo being infused at this center. Why should it be so radically different from the satellite centers? Why are the sign-in staff so unhelpful? My sister finds the appointments so much longer as well. This is due to the extreme length of time to get the chemo prepared once her blood work results are available. In Orange they got their chemo from Derby and delivery was quicker than the pharmacy in New Haven. I am hoping that some improvements can be made for the cancer patients receiving chemo in New Haven!

Too much staff and departments for no reason. All it does is cause chaos. Paperwork gets lost and never in the doctor's hand as told by all the people answering phone. Had my appointment just to find out Dr. Azodi had no records for me, eventhough it was all faxed by my doctor and confirmed by Smilow office. Very unorganized. No surgery for me. No help but a waste of time

IF YOU ARE READING THIS, GO TO MEMORIAL SLOAN AND KETTERING AND GET THE TREATMENT YOU NEED! Taken from my review left about Yale psych when Yale tried to treat a loved one with bipolar. I had the unfortunate experience of getting cancer and went to Smilow and one year later I had relapsed after two doctors cleared me and missed a 3.6cm mass on my Posas muscle. Yale wanted to treat me with the highest dose of bleomycin, etoposide and cisplatin known as BEP chemo and the bleomycin would have ended my career. I was told from CT Scan with no biopsy that I am stage 3 and have a 1.5 years to live. I asked the oncologist, you can tell that from a CT Scan without a confirmed biopsy? " Yes and you need high dose chemo now" was the response. I got up and walked out, I called Memorial Sloan and Kettering in NY. They did a biopsy and stated I was stage 1 and would have 93 % cure rare with Etopiside and Cisplatin at a standard dose. The doctors and nurses at Sloan were a world of difference than Yale. MSK confirmed Yale had failed to inform me based on my first follow up CT Scan that there was a mass present... If anyone has any questions for me, please get in touch and I will personally tell you about the experience myself and my family have undergone.

I WAS ADVISED TO GO TO YALE NEW HAVEN HOSPITAL AFTER BEING RELEASED FROM DANBURY HOSPITAL BY A DR. MARTIN ABRAMS. I SAW A DR. SEROPIAN AND TEAM WHERE FOR 1 MONTH I HAD BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS EVERY OTHER DAY, ALONG WITH MULTIPLE BONE MARROW TESTS. HAVING GONE THROUGH ALL THE TESTING, I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH MDS (Myelodysplasticsyndrome) an EXTREMELY DEADLY BLOOD DISEASE WHERE MOST PEOPLE DO NOT SURVIVE. THE CUT OFF IN 1999 FOR STEM CELL TRANSPLANTS WAS AGE 50, I HAD JUST TURNED 50. FORTUNATELY FOR ME I HAVE AN IDENTICAL SISTER, THEREFORE OUR DNA IS IDENTICAL, WHEREUPON OUR BLOOD WAS A PERFECT MATCH. MY SISTER DONATED HER BLOOD, IT WAS EXAMINED, TESTED, ETC., WOULD ULTIMATELY ENTER MY BODY AS A STEM CELL TRANSPLANT. I WAS ADMITTED TO YALE NEW HAVEN HOSPITAL, NOW CALLED SMILOW, HAD 3 DAYS OF FULL BODY RADIATION 2-3 TIMES A DAY, AFTER WHICH CAME THE CHEMO, EXTREMELY POTENT CHEMO 2 TIMES A DAY FOR 2 DAYS, WHERE MY HAIR FELL OUT IMMEDIATELY. WHEN MY BODY WAS RID OF ALL MY BONE MARROW I WAS THEN READY TO RECEIVE THIS STEM CELL TRANSPLANT, WHICH WAS ADMINISTERED AS A BLOOD TRANSFUSION INTO A PORTA CATHETER IMPLANTED IN MY CHEST. ANOTHER MONTH IN THE HOSPITAL, RELEASED TO MY HOME WHEN THE TEAM IF DOCTORS FELT THE STEM CELL TRANSPLANT WAS A SUCCESS. ANOTHER MONTH RECUPERATING, GETTING STRONGER, ACTUALLY RETURNED TO WORK GRADUALLY, THEN FULL TIME. IT IS NOW 20 YEARS LATER, 70 YEARS, I AM STILL ALIVE, CAN STILL TOUCH MY TOES, DO THE TWIST, AND LOVE TO DANCE. THE TWIST COMES NOW, I DECIDED TO GO TO SMILOW MANY YEARS LATER FOR A CHECK UP, ACTUALLY THIS SEROPIAN WAS STILL THERE. IN THE LOBBY I HAD A CUP OF COFFEE, IT WAS DRUGGED, BY THE TIME I REACHED SEROPIAN’s OFFICE I WAS DISORIENTED. THESE BLACK EMPLOYEES IN THE LOBBY DELIBERATLY DRUGGED MY COFFEE. SEROPIAN WAS SOO NASTY, I ALMOST LEFT WITHOUT HAVING THIS APPOINTMENT. HE ASKED WHY I WAS THERE, I TOLD HIM FOR A CHECK UP, HE SAID HE WOULD ORDER SOME BLOODWORK, I PROCEEDED TO HAVE THE BLOOD WORK, HOWEVER, WHEN I RECEIVED THE RESULTS, I REALIZED THIS SEROPIAN DID NOT INCLUDE A VERY CRITICAL TEST, IMPORTANT TEST, WHEN I INQUIRED WHICH TOOK SEVERAL WEEKS I WAS TOLD SEROPIAN MADE A MISTAKE. THE TRUTH IS HE DID NOT MAKE A MISTAKE, IT WAS INTENTIONAL, CAUSING ME MUCH ANXIETY, WHERE I HAD TO TRAVEL 2 HOURS TO HAVE THE CORRECT TEST. FRANKLY IN 1999 WHEN I WAS AT YALE NEW HAVEN HOSPITAL, TREATMENT GOOD, PLEASED WITH THE DOCTORS AND STAFF. AFTER THIS APPOINTMENT YEARS LATER WITH SEROPIAN, I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THIS SMILOW CANCER CENTER TO MY WORST ENEMY. THE FUNNY PART IS, NOW THEY WANT ME TO MAKE DONATIONS, PUT THEM IN MY WILL, THEY MUST HAVE ROCKS IN THEIR HEAD, AFTER THAT VISIT YEARS LATER WHERE THEY INTENTIONALLY SCREWED WITH MY BLOOD WORK, MY LIFE, TO THINK THEY WOULD HAVE THE GAUL TO THINK I WOULD EVER DONATE NEVER MIND PUTTING THEM IN MY WILL, MUST BE CRAZY. DO NOT GO TO SMILOW, YALE NEW HAVEN HOSPITAL, ALL ABOUT DRUGGING, A HUGE PFIZER FACILITY ON THEIR CAMPUS. IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE, GO ELSEWHERE, SMILOW WOULD BE THE WORST OF THE WORST. DO YOUR RESEARCH, TALK TO PEOPLE, READ, LOOK THINGS UP ON THE COMPUTER BEFORE GOING ANYWHERE. BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE. DOCTORS ARE NOT OMNIPOTENT AS THEY WANT TO BE REVERED. GOOD LUCK!!

woefully understaffed on weekends. No response to nurse call for more than 20 minutes is unacceptable.

Every time I have gone to smillow to stay, everyone treated my husband and I very well. They make me feel very comfortable when I'm there. My doctor really knows her stuff and she provides me with excellent care. The nurses and nursing assistants are great as well. My surgeon was the best Dr. Chagpar, she is very straight forward and honest. She is also very caring to others. You are in good hands at smillow hospital!

I have been treated at smilow cancer center for the past year and I found that the doctors are quite knowledgeable about current treatments however I found that the both the MD's and staff, especially at the smilow Cancer center in New Haven were indifferent at best. I do have to say that when I received my 40 radiation treatments, it was at the radiation therapy department at shoreline medical center in Guilford and that team including the radiation oncologist were outstanding. They were professional, caring, and efficient, unlike the staff in New Haven. In New Haven, i waited 5 hours at my first visit. And the last visit I waited two and a half hours. During my last visit, I was never informed of the wait time and when I asked to speak to a manager after 1 and a half hours, I was told they had all gone home for the day. At every visit I saw the doctor for about 5 or 10 minutes there was never a review of systems and a very scant if any physical exam. With my prostate cancer I was never referred to any kind of physical therapy for incontinence issues and I was never told about any support groups or any nurse that would be able to help with problems or questions associated with my cancer and symptoms. Essentially, I was left on my own to fend for myself. In reading these reviews for the smilow cancer center, I find it very interesting that whoever monitors and comments on these reviews, only commented on the positive reviews and never commented on the negative reviews. I also found it very interesting that every comment to the positive reviews were a cut and paste with the same comment for every positive review. I think this is a pretty good reflection of how I feel about the smilow cancer center and their inability to deal with the person behind the cancer not just the cancer itself. As a medical professional for 22 years and working in several large hospitals including Yale New Haven Hospital, I would not recommend Smilow New Haven now I'm on the other side of medical care as a patient. Personally, I have dropped my care from Smilow and am traveling to Hartford for complete care of my cancer. Post Comment Addendum: I received a response from the monitor of these reviews and what is it... most of it is the same canned response to all or the comments on this web site. Just as I thought, there really is little ability at Yale to look at the person/patient as a unique individual but just the same emotionless entity that deserves nothing more than a cut and paste on the internet as well as at the Smilow Clinics

After being diagnosed this past week I have found the nurses at Smilow to be excellent and caring. Because of their schedules I have seen many different nurses and they have all gone above and beyond. This includes my first weekend. I have at least four or five treatments coming during the next several months. I am not worried about my care. I have seen at least one doctor every day and they are very helpful and informative. It's not fare that I mention specific nurses because the are all equally qualified and nice and everything else you can positively say about them. I want to do a special call out to Haley. She is leaving this week to make a move to another hospital in Boston. I will miss her on my upcoming visits, but understand that this is a great opportunity for her and wish her well.

My sister went in for surgery. At other hospitals I've dealt with rude staff, and could never get help when necessary. I did not have that problem here. Doctors, nurses, other staff were genuinely helpful, and polite. If someone saw me with a puzzled look they'd see if I needed help. I was glad my sister was under the care of this facility. I knew she would be taken care of.
