Although Barrow is supposed to have some of the best Neurologists in the world, it is pretty difficult to tell. For the past three days we have spent hours on the phone trying to talk to someone other than the front desk. For three days we have been put on terminal hold, referred to phone numbers that have gone unanswered, promised that someone would be calling us back (they never do), and generally ignored. At this point, I cannot recommend this hospital.

We made contact with Doctor Lawton initially through the 2nd opinion program at The Barrow Institute via a friend of ours telling us he wouldn’t get an AVM resection (brain surgery)taken care of anywhere else but Barrow and that doctor Lawton is the best in the world. We of course did our research and our friend was not wrong! Brain surgery is no joke and what we have learned is there is a huge difference between just a really good brain surgeon, and the best in the world especially when it comes to doctor Lawton’s expertise in AVM and aneurysm treatment. This was our second brain surgery and I wish I had gone to The Barrow Institute and doctor Lawton the first time. I’ve also been in four different hospitals in a year and a half, as we have gone through this and when it comes to the surgery process from beginning to end Doctor Lawton’s team, doctor Washington (anesthesia) was amazing, the residents were great, and the nurses after surgery were awesome. The Barrow Institute is next level and so hopefully you never need a brain surgery but if you do, and you can get to the best, doctor Lawton has my vote!

The absolute worst experience in my life. NO ONE CALLS YOU BACK and NO ONE ANSWERS THE PHONE! My doctor ordered a scan two weeks after my appointment and NO ONE (including the staff at St. Josephs Hospital) called me to inform me. Once I got the procedure scheduled, no one would return my calls or answer. I have gone more than 3 weeks without response or anyone answering my calls. I would rather see the worthless doctor that treated me like I was pushing for pills when I wasn't rather than go through more BS with Barrows or St Josephs.

Dr. Treiman was a nightmare!! We took our minor son and were told to speak when spoken to, weren’t allowed to inform, ask questions, or advocate for our son. He was completely arrogant and dismissive to us as parents. He needs to have his license taken away for that kind of behavior. We will NEVER be going back!

Called a month ago to do a follow up on a referral my Doctor had sent it. Was told lt takes 2 weeks to reviewed for an appointment, but that it was being reviewed. I called this morning and was told my referral now wasn't sent till 4/8? So if I was told it was there a month ago and now they are saying it was last week, who dropped the ball? Do they really treat patients here or is this just the norm? No one wants to take responsibility for anything, little answers and person I spoke to didn't seem to care. This has been an ongoing nightmare for my family and I for 8 months.

This place saved my life. I am forever grateful for all who cared for me. Thank you Dr. Nakaji you are an extraordinary surgeon.

Dan Kim

You get robbed here. First they never voluntarily tell you how much a procedure will cost you. If you ask they will give an estimate which is way off because they can’t or won’t tell you the true total cost. No transparency. Behind their human kindness is bunch of greedy investors who only care about profits and not you.

Paul Wisniewski

World class facility, world class staff and world class physicians. I cannot fathom a more capable organization to help remove the terror from a diagnosis that requires Neurosurgery. If a surgical solution is humanly possible, these fine people can deliver.

They saved my life! After being sent home from the Abrazio Heart Hospital as a drugiaddict trying to get a fix, my mother made me go to St. Joe's, where they immediately discovered that I had an ABCESS on my brain! MRSA!! St Joe's and Barrow, THANK YOU for listening to me and seeing me as a priceless human life, rather than some piece of garbage that does not deserve to receive medical care.

Michael Lutman

The staff and professionals here are the greatest! I've been to other facilities here in AZ, this is by far the best care one can get.

Lynn Nance

My husband was airlifted Tuesday from Flagstaff after suffering a bad stroke. He has blood clots on his brain and lungs still today. Dr Watters and the stroke team have been amazing!!!! The nurses go above and beyond. We are in the Neuro ICU. The speech therapist, OT therapist and PT have also been amazing. They have answered any and all questions. Without him being airlifted here I don’t think we would be where we are at with his recovery.

Bill Jacobsen

I came from Nebraska to train here and six years later I've made this my home. Great program and great people have made BNI a top contender in neurologic care.

Dr. Kris Smith and Dr. Lynn Ashby, Thank you for theawesome job getting after my tumor. After 10 years of survival, It's a "no brainer" who I would recommend to anyone who has the misfortune of needing to shop for a surgeon with a steady hand. Thank you Barrows!

I have had a bad experience from day one starting with our first call that they will call and that we don't need to call them what funny waiting for an appointment we waited three weeks that's what a front desk lady said. three weeks later they didn't have my paperwork yet. We work around them and wait. Two months later i get an appointment. So i try to talk to someone and know it didn't happen so i leave three messages different days each one said get back in 24 hours and nothing. After four days i got a little mad with some one and they got the nurse she said she never got any messages. I DIDN'T WANT To GIVE A STAR BUT YOU HAVE TO. I just got diagnose with two specialist Dr Ortega and his partner by a two hour EMG study. My next step was to get signed off a team of five to help you with the future. So the sign off doctor PLS/ALS specialist Dr Schafer an durning his 15 minutes evaluations he sees something different. I asked him why two of his specialist said PLS he won't say i guess they don't work together in the same hallway sounds like and old quack so now my life gets put on hold. They said they didn't like my email told so they sent my a certified letter to never return. I never said anything bad like profanity.

My daughter has been there for three days with a stroke. They cannot get the appropriate tests run because they "don't have enough doctors". They patronizer her about her headaches. She may die in this place due to lack of quality care. Trying to get her transferred out. Do not go here.

I have given up hope on any improvement in my MS because of how I have been treated by the doctor At Barrows. I always end up feeling like I have been an inconvenience, nuisance, drug seeker or worse to them. I have been in counseling for some time and recently started seeing a psychiatrist as well because the hopeless has become suicidal. I do not have this problem with any other Doctors. I do not have difficulty getting calls back from them, or getting answers to my questions, or having them repeat things because I have forgotten due to my MS cognitive problems.

Dr. Nakaji is a very skillful Doctor. My Cindy had a calvernoma malfunction on the brain steam. This was no easy task by no means. The confidence Dr. Nakaji displayed by being open and honest with us from the start. This assurance from Barrow Brain and Spine that we received was without a doubt the right place for my wife Cindy.

Amanda Parks

The service is okay but good luck booking an appointment. I have been trying for 2 weeks to book an appointment and have been told they are waiting for the doctors schedule. How can a business operate like this? I was told I would get a call back in a week. It has been a week and I haven't gotten a call back. I have left multiple messages and still nothing. How hard is it to book an appointment? This is unacceptable to have such poor communication!!!

Mr. Slurp

My son had Chiari Surgery at Phoenix Children's with Dr. Shafron of Barrow. His results were wonderful. Every day someone from the team came and checked in on my son. The care he received has been phenomenal. Thank you Dr. Shafron, PCH and Barrow for helping my son!

Martha Lopez

My father had a neck surgery several years ago at Barrow Neurological Institute. Dr. Kakarma was the neurosurgeon. He did an excellent job. Now that my husband was recently diagnosed with MS and i wanted to take him to Barrow but after reading the poor reviews and had left a voice massage days ago and no one had called me back, I see that that the patients reviews are true. I will find an neurologist for my husband that cares for patients and have friendly and professional staff members. You should think about the bad reputation you're creating and think that it's not good for you "business"

Dr. Ortega, Knevial, Griffin and a host of others (can't remember all of them by names) had a hand in my well being and I couldn't be more grateful! They took very good care of me and maintain my condition! They are Highly recommended!

I had a previous cervical fusion from another spine institute, which ultimately failed. I sought Barrows out, and specifically Dr. Theodore, for his extensive knowledge, and education regarding the spine. I was always seen in a timely manner, and Dr. Theodore and his staff have always answered all my questions. Frankly, I cannot tell you how comforting it is to have this top notch establishment on my side. I've had spine problems for over three years, and Dr. Theodore is still on board to help me resolve my issues. I think the best part of my life is soon to come, thanks to Barrows and Dr. Theodore. Dr. Theodore was also an inspiration to my son. He took the time to talk with him, and this man has a tremendous work load, there is a reason for that fact. He is the best! I cannot imagine the pressure of doing the job he does. Saves and improves the quality of lives. Saint Josephs Hospital was excellent on my last surgery, and I cannot say enough about the staff during my stay. I will always recommend anyone with spine problems to Barrows, and Dr. Theodore. I will be undergoing another spine surgery with Dr. Theodore in the near future, for a thoracic issue recently discovered. I feel there is no better man or location in the state for this to happen. If you choose Dr. Theodore and Barrows in general, you will be in the best of hands. Thank you Barrows, Dr. Theodore, Daytrel, Julie, and Amanda. You all are very kind and helpful.

Steve Holding

I've been going to aBarrows for 15 to 20yrs. Excellent service. They stayed with me. Kept testing me. I was a problem case. Thought I had a form of Parkinism. Did an Lp, and it was negative for MS. So they ruled out Ms. Never did an MRI OF MY SPINE. That was what led them to MS. They do what I want done to me.

Kyle McCormick

They are low staff on physicians. Patients wait for days for tests due to lack of staff and room. Test results take quadruple the time to come back due to lack of staff. Dr. Joni Clark is patronizing to her patients. Quality of care is poor by physicians. Nurses are nice but cannot do much.

Diana Rivas

This hospital is incredible they are great! From RN's to Surgeons!!! I love this hospital so thankful for everyone who took care of me in my stay! Dr. Little and. Dr. Woodall are excellent!

Couldn't ask for better results. Had hemifacial spasms for about 3 years and Dr. Peter Nakaji perform MVD surgery. When I woke up I was spasm free. All risks, thr procedure and recovery was explained in detailed. A++

Heartless and devoid of all human understanding!! I had to come by myself, because no one was available to bring me, from 2 hours away. I got lost, called and was told to to just come on in. I got lost in their garage and checked in 20 minutes late. I had a head injury and had a black eye from falling and also have an MS diagnosis. Although I had petitioned for Dr Borazanci to see me, she absolutely refused. I was told that the doctors were not customer friendly, but hardly expected this treatment. Heartless and devoid of all understanding! I understand that being on time is needed, but there are always exceptions, and I was willing to wait for the rest of the day to just be seen. To send someone away who obviously needs to be seen is the worst medical care in the world. This is a well funded institute. I guess I expected more considering their funding!

Holly Shepherd

I would give them A BIG FAT 0. This place sucks to deal with. They won't accept new patients unless their records are sent to them. I wasted 2 months trying to just get records sent to them. My daughter's primary care physician and neurologist repeatedly sent them referrals and records which they managed to "never" receive even when they were faxed directly to Charles. I was finally informed, after I called them again to find out if they had received the records and referral, that they were no longer accepting "migraine" patients. My Daughter is dealing with more than migraines and they would have seen that if they would have taken enough time to pull their heads out of their butts and fixed the problem with their fax machine/ or office personnel.

wes moss

This place has got to be the worst. I've been trying to get seen for the past three months. According to Mayo they have sent my records with a referral multiple times. I tried to ask Charles H. (Wouldn't give a last name) if there was anything else I can do to get in or get my records over and just told me "well, we aren't even getting anyone in until January." He would just talk over me and refuse to even try to answer my question and just said he was the head person on scheduling. Mayo neurological treated people so much better and didn't act like you were a problem to them because you were sick. Thanks again Barrow (sarcasm).

Crazy Doglady

I have been trying for over a month to get into Barrows (Dr Chang). I have called my primary doctor now 3 times to get my records sent over to them. They are even starting to get pissed off because they have sent my records to them now several times. But yet Barrows stills says they don't have anything. Starting to wonder if I am being discriminated against because of my insurance company. I have NEVER had any issues like this before with any other doctor or referral. Plus, they are rude on the phone and talk down to you like you are stupid. They are beyond ridiculous. I would not recommend them to anyone! If they can't do their paperwork correctly, the hell if I want them operating on my spine!!

Darrel Greer

The people here have made and unbearable situation bearable i will never forget them

My original neurologist was amazing but he left and the new doctor and staff treated me horribly. They were very rude and not knowledgeable about epilepsy at all. I now go to another clinic.

Person I talked to yesterday was not helpful or positive. Clearly disinterested in his job and . acted as though I was bothering him when I tried to get information on making an appointment. Said at least 2 - 3 months IF they could make appointment. Suspect attitude comes from those managing Barrow and filters down through the physicians and nurses and lower level staff. Now rethinking whether I really want treatment in a place with such a pervasive negative attitude.

My wife had GBM (brain cancer) I had taken her to MD Anderson every 6 weeks for 2.5 years before my wife and I moved to Phoenix and we decided to try Barrow. It was hard getting her on the plane and by the time Dr. Ashby was seeing her she was in the later horrible stages. Dr. Ashby was willing to give it a try, she continued my wife treatment until finally, I had decided enough was enough. Thank you for your efforts Dr. Ashby, I should have sent you a note sooner. But, when you lose someone you really were crazy about, its always just happened, time does not pass. So, maybe its not too late to say thank you.

On October 2nd, Our family Dr referred my husband to Barrows for further examination of Parkinson's or possibly another neurological disorder with symptoms of Parkinson's. We had the MRI done and on the 13th the entire package was sent to Barrows. The 1st time I called, they said the file had not arrived, the 2nd time I called, on the 23rd, they said they have the file and it was under review and to call back on the 30th to see if they will give him an appointment. I called back on the 30th and they said the file did go in to review and to try to call back again on November 3rd. I am beginning to feel like I am getting the run around from an orgainization who is suppose to be tops in their field. When trying to work with Barrows if you are already feeling a bit overwhelmed and helpless with your spouse, don't expect much is results as far as attempting to get an appointment. Customer service is a huge disappointment.

Ashley Jordan

Front desk is awful. Someone called and Moved my appointment two different times. Once while I was on my way there. Things come up I understand that completely working in the medical field myself but wouldn't it make sense for the front desk to make checking you in a priority instead of forgetting to and going to lunch? Very frustrating.

Moved from Tucson to Phoenix primarily in hopes of getting better medical care, and l am glad we did. Was referred to Barrows by my pain management doctor after an mri showed l had a rare disabilitating spinal disease which was causing me to slowly go paralized. Both the neurologist, Dr Tumialan, and the neurosurgeon, Dr Ducret, were caring individuals, highly professional, and explained the proceedure l needed in a way that l could understand to make an intelligent decision. Though risky, l knew l would be in the best hands possible to get this procedure done and l wasn't scared. I had the angiogram done last Monday, and everything, from the registration process through my discharge on Tuesday, couldn't have gone more smoothly. The nurses and doctors were wonderful and caring people, and the embolization of the fistula in my spine was successfully closed. I see why Barrows is ranked one of the best neurological centers in the world. I highly recommend them.

I sought out consultations at Barrow, as well as another well known and highly regarded medical entity in the Phoenix area after a less than successful cervical spine surgery at USC to address my severe stenosis. I feel I received very competent and professional evaluations from two highly regarded neurological surgeons at my first stop, which was not Barrow. I had an appointment lined up with Barrow the following week. At Barrow I met with Dr Juan Uribe, a leading member of their neurosurgical group. His demeanor, upon meeting me and my wife, was immediately comforting. It was very evident that he had carefully reviewed all my MRIs, Surgical Notes and CTs as he proceeded to provide us with a thorough evaluation of my current situation. In the course of his review he noted that what was reported as a fusion of C4-C7 had been only partially successful and that in fact C6-C7 were only partially fused. He then took us outside the examination room in order to show us the finding on the CT. This was the first time that any of this had been noted in my of my medical consultations with other neurosurgeons. He then went on to point out that though my first surgery had addressed the primary spinal column impingement on my spinal cord I continued to have significant stenosis issues, which in fairness had been pointed out by the first to consults I had in Phoenix. During the original surgery I had lost much of my upper right arm functionality so it was a bit unnerving to hear that in fact I had major issues on my left side as well which he clearly pointed out and explained while we all viewed my cervical CT. He, like my prior consults indicated that surgery was likely a necessity in order to retain my existing state of functionality and to relieve associated neurological issues I was experiencing. He suggested that we take some time to think about all that had been thrown at us before we made any decisions with regard to treatment. Which I thought was sound advise. What I didn't expect was that three days later his associate Briana ( a delightful person) called to say that Dr Uribe wanted to meet with us again before we made any decisions to insure that we fully understood the risks associated with surgery as well as taking a wait and see approach. Such concerned follow up was something we never expected nor experienced in the past. We were given a appointment for the following week, which would be this upcoming Monday. I feel that what we experienced with Dr Uribe and his thorough evaluation and insight regarding my unique situation was a true demonstration of what you hope for in a Doctor. Someone who takes a sincere interest in the patient and is willing to spent the time to thoroughly evaluation all aspects of his or her condition. Needless to say this whole experience to date has left us with a strong sense of confidence that we are in the best of hands at an institution that takes a deep interest in ones situation and is focused on determining the underlying caused of the condition of the patient in order to take that into account when approaching / recommending a course of action. We are very much relieved to have the opportunity to meet with the doctor and his staff again to continue the discovery process. What amazing follow up as well by his associate Briana.

5 months to get appointments scheduled after initial intake interview. Had to cancel hotel appointment for 1 test because they either lost or couldn't read my list of medications, and one med I'm taking has to be discontinued for at least 5 days prior to the test. They rarely answer the phone or return calls. More than one administrative staffer has a surly attitude, and appears to not understand the correct procedures for carrying out their duties. I've been given wrong information on more than one occasion. There are good doctors here, but the total package is lacking because of the incompetence and attitude problems of some members of the administrative staff.

MY wife admitted for a stroke. ICU was excellent. After 3 days moved to 5th floor. Nursing call button doesn't work. Gir at the nurse station ignored repeat ed requests for help. Long story short, ended up back in ICU. Now back on the 5th floor awaiting transfer to the rehab center. Same old nursing apathy story. I'm afraid to go home.

Wife had a stroke and went here. Although things went well in house, barrow has sat on her physical therapy order with no intention of notifying her or our insurance. Nobody will provide us the information we need or submit physical therapy orders to insurance.

This amazing facility went above and beyond all expectations. Nurses in ICU are professional, caring, and attentitive. They watched and monitored through a window outside the room and entered only when needed. They noticed every restless movement and quickly checked to see if assistance or meds would help. After brain tumor removed, pain and nausea were treated quickly (and often.) Room was spotless, private and quiet. With my permission, family was allowed to visit at all hours. Nurses kept them informed and showed patience and understanding with their many questions and concerns. Room cleaning and routine BP and temperature checks were completed when I was awake so as not to disturb my sleep. Dr. Peter Nakaji and his team were amazing. I traveled from San Antonio to Phoenix based on the compassioinate and informative phone interview with Dr. Nakaji. I had seen two neurosurgeons in San Antonio and felt rushed and left with many questions. It was worth the trip as Dr. Nakaji took the time to explain what was needed, how it woud be done, and work with MY schedule to secure a convenient time and date. Without hesitation, I highly recomment Barrow Neurological at St. Joseph's Hospital AND Dr. Peter Nakaji for you or your loved one. They changed my life for the better.

They literally saved my son's life he wouldn't be here any longer if it wasn't for the doctors and nurses at Barrow's. Excellent care

I Highly recommend !!!...Totally love Dr Randall Porter!! First met him when he saved my fathers life. He was 80 years old with a broken neck! I went to him a few years later when I needed back surgery. Great results! Dr Porter then did my husbands back surgery in 2010. Excellent outcome. in May of 2015 my husband needed neck surgery ASAP, once again Dr Porter did his surgery. Everything went beautifully! Next week on May 10th 16. Dr Porter will again do another back surgery on my husband, this one will be more extensive than the last one. He will have a fusion as well. we know the outcome will be great! We both trust Dr Porter with our very lives!...Hes that awesome!! We are very Blessed to know him, and have him as our surgeon. Another truly amazing person with his staff is, Heather!!! She is the person who fits you with your braces there. She is kind, and goes out of her way to make sure everything, goes smoothly for your journey. Thanks Dr Porter!...and Thank you Heather! God Bless you both Always! Pamela Jones

So far so good. I am a patient of Dr. Chang. I was referred to him by my Neurologist at a different clinic who discovered my neck issue. They have basically taken over all aspects of my difficult case. I have a phone number to call directly to his office. They return my phone calls. I will keep you posted as things develop, because of I am not happy you will know it.

I dont know why alot of people are complaining. It stands to reason if the place is good( one of the 10 best in the country), its going to be busy. Ive been going there for about 25yrs. I wouldnt go anywhere else. You should have seen the old Barrows. Old, but good Drs. Now, new and good Drs. So, you people that complain (entitled right? If its good, you have to work for it.). I dont have any trouble getting an appointment. You just have to Remember to make an app. on the way out. Top notch. No B.S. M.S., 12yrs ( PPMS), and I drive from Apache Junction. I Woudnt go anywhere else.

Went in for a hyperhidrosis surgery and woke up to a heart surgery. I have nerve damage like you wouldnt believe from this guy. Now 4 years later my back is so screwed from nerves i dont work out and worst of all cant even go golfing. I shouldve have sued. I lost one job because of this now im going to lose another one. Youve ruined my life DR. NICHOLAS THEODORE

Well, you can’t give no stars, so we will give the one star to Dr. Borzanci because she’s so sweet. I went to barrows hospital in 2007 presenting a text book case of Multiple Sclerosis. Exactly half my body was tingling- from the waist down. I was diagnosed with stress, given a prescription for Xanax and told if I calmed down the feeling would come back. I was misdiagnosed by “experts” I went out of my way to see. That cost me 6 years of not treating my disease. Thanks Barrows, I should sue you. You would be better off visiting any other hospital if you are experiencing neurological trouble, just not Barrows

Dr. Moguel-Cobos treated my Mother for years and I have to give the man a the best rating possible. He did not give up on my Mother and made it possible for her to live a much better life for the time she had left.

So many problems getting my medication no one cares there your just a number worst experience I 've had yet

I was SHOT in the HEAD 2 weeks after graduating high school. The first hospital I was at, told my parents that I would be blind in the left eye, and I would be paralyzed in the left side due to the stroke I had suffered. And that was if they/I were lucky enough to even wake up from the coma i was in for a 1.5 months. AFTER being transported to BNI my life was saved by their amazing staff. I woke up from the coma, began many therapies, learned how to walk again, I have 20/20 vision in both eyes and wrote this review using both hands. The first hospital was terribly wrong, and had it not been for Barrow Neurological Institute I wouldn't be LIVING right now. I'm writing this on 4/22/2017, EARTH DAY. I cant thank BNI enough for the new life their neurosurgeon's have BLESSED me with. MIRACLES HAPPEN IN THIS HOSPITAL! I am ONE of them.

Amazing facility with a top-notch staff of doctors and nurses. I got a diagnosis of a brain tumor back in February of this year. Doctors told me it was inoperable and to just go sit on a beach and wait to die. So then I went to Cancer Treatment Centers of America and they were terrible. Then I came to this place, they operated got all of the tumor, and my prognosis is great. Can't say enough good things about them! Lindsay Higginbotham is an amazing nurse and Dr. Nadair Sanai is an extraordinary surgeon and they saved my life.

Michael Baird

We have been here for over 30 days. Excellent care! The medical team has saved my wife's life. Every day I've been able to hold her hand and experience one more kiss. I'm very grateful!!!! God, Prayer, a GREAT Medical team , and my wife's will to live have all together created a miracle. All the staff work well together for the highest quality level of care possible for the patient and the family.

I'd give it zero stars if I could. I waited months to get in to see a neurologist. He told me he was familiar with how to treat my condition, and ordered a test to confirm whether I had it. The test was positive, which I had to wait almost two months to find out. Office staff refused to let me schedule an appointment at the time the test was done, claiming that someone would call with the results. The someone turned out to be the doctor's nurse, who I had to call to try and get the results. She claimed she couldn't understand them (they were written in plain English!!), and only then was I allowed to schedule an appointment. Doctor reiterated that he knows how to treat my condition, even gave me a prescription for it. Instructed me to call back if the meds didn't work. That was two months ago. A dozen calls later, the ditzy nurse from before still won't call back. I found out from another nurse the doctor is now claiming that he doesn't know how to treat me. Now a receptionist tells me that in all of Barrow Neurology there is not one single doctor who knows how to treat my condition. Nor will they tell me who does, not their problem so they couldn't care less. Seeing as how they knew from the beginning why I was being referred to Barrow Neurology, you'd think they would have told me way back in February that nobody at Barrow knows anything about autonomic disorders, rather than lying and wasting my time.

This was the worst doctor visit experience in my life. NO ONE RETURN YOUR CALLS ! My doctor ordered a lab work, which was done on the same day of my visit and results were sent to her . Two weeks after my lab work and NO ONE contacted me back to discuss the results with me. Called the front desk twice and left messages for my doctor, she never returned my calls. I had to obtain a copy of my lab work and take it to another doctor to find out what is wrong with me . I have been trying to contact their billing office regarding my ridicules bill and have been put on hold for over 20 minutes and unable to talk to a person . This was the absolute worst doctor visit I have ever experienced.

Diane Robbins

Doctors are great! but staff is another story, especially when it comes to getting authorizations for your treatments. But I guess its ok to skip your monthly infusions that keep your lesions and excacerbations at bay. All because someone doesn't wanna do their job . So fustrated!!

Michael York

Barrow is a top class facility and I received excellent treatment for a a sub dural hematoma. However their attending neurotically surgeon, a Doctor named Jay Turner is a world class arrogant SOB. After being released he would do nothing to help schedule my follow up catscan. Because, he did not accept my insurance, Humana, which is not like no one has ever heard of it. I had two issues for which I called for advise, hiccups and numbness in right arm. No return call, following Monday called back and was told that mr turner is "a neurological surgeon" and is very busy and unable to talk to mortal humans, paraphrased! I would certainly recommend Barrow and St Joe, but if Turner comes into your room, throw a bed pan at him, and tell him to get the hell away from you! The only way I was released to go back on warfarin for my mechanic heart valve was working with my wonderful cardiologist Dr Tim Byrne and my PCP Dr Todd Kravetz. The " Neurological Surgern" could give a cat crap!

Sheila Porter

My husband was a patient in the ER at St Joe's. He was having trouble breathing. The staff was great. A Neurologist from Barrow came to evaluate him. He was admitted that night and over the next three days several Neurologist's attended to him. The diagnosis was ALS. They quickly ordered BIPAP for home and scheduled an appt with the Dr at the MDA clinic.

3 weeks post op for Chiari decompression surgery and I cannot day enough great things. The hospital staff were amazing, my surgeon, Dr. Nakaji, and his team of fellows left me with a 2 inch incision which is transformational in the Chiari world! To all my fellow Chiari Warriors, have no fear the surgery is simple and healing time is nothing!!!

Kathy Brown

My surgery was bad from the beginning. but to make matters worse, they failed to tell me when I had a follow up MRI that I now have a debilitating disease caused by the surgery. When I was called by the Radiologist, I was told everything looked great and my surgeon signed off on it electronically. I wasn’t told until I went in because of a new symptom three months later. My world renowned surgeon was incapable of answering my questions, he sent a resident in. The MA said they would see me y three years. This is a teaching hospital, there is so much they could’be learned a lot from my case. I will never go back there again. This would be a ZERO if that was possible.

You are only allowed to park there if you work there. Who ever designed their parking should be shot in the face. Stupid, stupid stupid stupid, stupid ,stupid !

Full disclosure: I just completed a 1-star review for St. Joseph's Hospital, the unworthy predecessor to Barrow. If you're lucky enough to bypass the emergency department downstairs and go straight to Barrow, count your blessings. From the time I was taken to my room in the Barrow tower to the time I was discharged, I received the level of care that most institutes can only dream of providing. Every single nurse, tech, physical and occupational therapist, and of course, neurologist that worked with me truly went above and beyond to make sure I was taken care of. They thought of everything to make sure that I was going to be prepared to re-enter life as close to normal as possible. Not only that, but after several failed lumbar puncture attempts in the emergency department (see associated review for St. Joseph's), the team in interventional radiology made an otherwise grueling process seem easy and did so without even causing me the slightest bit of pain. I wanted to get up from the table and give the doctor a big hug after that, but I was told to stay flat for a while. After that was all said and done, the doctors put their heads together and figured out what the problem was - an undertaking that two other hospitals failed to figure out (and took twice as long as Barrow). I now can resume life as normal (or modified slightly until I fully recover at least) because of their expertise and I am eternally grateful for that. The doctor even spent 15 minutes on the phone with me answering all of my questions and thoroughly explaining the diagnosis since she couldn't be there in person. If only every hospital and inpatient medical facility could be this attentive, caring, professional, and knowledgeable, the world would be a better place.

Horrible. I went because I had a few doctors ask me to go to a neurologist. Usually they didn't send to Barrow but they are supposed to be 'the best'. My first visit the doctor refused to listen to my symptoms and just offered medication that actually interacted with Meds I was already on, which he didn't know because he didn't read my chart or the information I had filled out in the office. My 2nd visit I was informed that I cancelled my appointment. I drove an hour to get here, had someone else pick up my kids, and many other things. Plus, I would know if I cancelled an appointment. I had already waited longer than I was supposed to for this appointment. We are people with Neurological problems, it's not nice to mess with people's minds.

I was told by my Nuerologist in Scottsdale to go there I did to the er can I say time I wish I never had gone in can or could have gotten back I will be filing a complaint if I have strength against the rediculous staff main dr blonde her name is on my paperwork my dr should have been contacted my paperwork was lost that I brought in with his name and number I cannot believe that negligence going on there the staff when I of all people know what is going on could not actually respond my jaw was locked and they are speaking like ok ... use your words I’m trying not to choke on my spit I could not use my limbs could not actually speak I am literally here thinking go into medical boards site file a complaint? I’m sure after dealing with my Nuerologist he will be dealing with this place bArrows is some place I used to trust never ever again I cannot believe how the lack of care I received people should learn if people can not speak it’s not because they are scared it’s literally they cannot communicate!! I have already contacted my insurance about this incident how poorly this place handled things I would say poorly is an understatement I will be filing complaints deeper about this I only heard one staff member a male voice who seemed to be caring concerned and my welfare I appreciate you thanks to you and looking out for patients like me you won’t be in the complaint But everyone who was involved from minute one and completely negligent behavior oh trust me not going to be good for your career complaints filing up the wazoo for you Other patients be very weary of where you go in the valley im not really wanting to go to any er for god sake Any more drs they seem to let graduate from any med school with any degree with any excuse I’m so sick of people not helping people ridiculous I will make sure everyone and I mean everyone knows about this!! Trust me bArrows and awful staff me and my family have not forgotten this will not ever!!!

My girlfriend had a second stent placed, the entire time the staff had poor attitudes, wouldn't or couldn't answer questions. I was constantly ignored when I wasn't being talked down to like a child.

Rita Lowden

Can't say enough about Barrow's! They truly care about their patients! Dr. Joseph Zabramski saved my life years ago. He clipped my brain aneurysm! It started to bleed then stopped. If it wasn't for him and his staff I wouldn't be here!

Randy Pectol

Had the best surgical team, the staff was the best. They saved my legs I just can't say enough good about their regular staff.

Jerry Wein

The best neurological surgeons you can get. Period. Had two successful procedures and both went perfectly. Great care in their wing in St Joseph's.

I had the pleasure of meeting with Dr. Uribe yesterday for the first time. I am an existing patient of Dr. Theodore and my father is a patient of Dr. Uribe. I had a traumatic car accident last week and needed to be seen immediately and my father is having a second surgery next month. Dr. Uribe’s secreatary went extremely out of her way to get me in immediately and I was beyond impressed with how much time, attention and support he gave to both of us. Honestly, I was sad and concerned that Dr. Theodore was no longer at Barrow, but I now know I am in fantastic hands if necessary in the future!!

Saw Dr. Turner and he spent over an hour explaining in detail why I need to have spine surgery. Wonderful doctor, I am going to trust him with my life.

Was referred to Barrow by Veteran Medical for spinal evaluation. Neuro surgeon seemed unconcerned and made a comment about why VA referred me. . Never returned call after initial Visit.

Had appointment yesterday that we drove 2 hours each way for. Easy to find, Free Valet parking right in front, and wonderful experience. They had a lot of patients and staff yet I was seen right on time ( that never happens at my usual doctors) and all staff were helpful, pleasant and caring. The dr I saw spent a great deal of time actively listening to me ( which also doesn’t happen at my regular drs) and then explaining everything to me. Yes, I had to be preapproved to be seen and yes, it took awhile to get the call I was accepted and yes it was months until the appointment. This is SOP for big operations today and it was right in the acceptable level of time for a place like this. I would recommend Barrows to anyone. 5 stars for above—————-zero stars for below. July 22- update. Stay far away from here. The report this place wrote my doctors mentioned 4 times in one small paragraph that if my insurance weren’t being canceled they could help me and if I ever got insurance again to call them. Why? I had insurance that day. They also put my diagnosis in quotes, repeating what I said my records said. They did not include the specific recommendations they told me in person ( which I asked them to do so my Tucson doctors could take over) so the four hour painful round trip was for nothing as I’m unable to do anything they said. I called on Friday June 28th ( they answered immediately) to ask them to add the important info to report as talking about money four times is not useful. I was told I’d get a callback Monday. I’m still waiting almost a month now for that call. ( by the way, don’t bother calling at this point as I would consider anything you said to be worthless and a joke). Honestly, they should be embarrassed to actually have written that ridiculous report. It was so unprofessional my doctor didn’t even bother to mention it let alone discuss it with me. That pretty much says it all. ( I got copy from my doctor’s office staff). Honestly, the worst part of this experience is they gave me hope ( as evidenced by my first review) and then took it away. If you are ill and haven’t had hope in years, to be given it and have it ripped away from you due to a poorly written report and no callback in a month is just more than a person should have to endure. I still stand by all I wrote in original review as they are still true, except for possibly the part where I said the doctor was actively listening. I’m not sure now if he was listening and sucks at writing reports or he wasn’t actually listening.

Received excellent care for my husband, who has had three brain tumors successfully removed near his brain stem, over the last 20 years. We are so grateful to Dr. Spetzler and his team for their expertise and kindness.

I was truly disappointed with this clinic as I had heard great things about them. It took me months to even get close to an appointment after getting a response "The doctor does not book ahead of time". Basically I was told that the doc was booking only 1 month in advance. I had received a referral from my specialist in another state as he knew this doctor and I needed someone to do my follow up care. Horrible to claim that he does not have available appts 1 month ahead of time. Never heard of such a big fat lie. I have been in the medical system long enough to understand how this works. Maybe they fill up cash payers first and then insurance. Nevertheless, horrible experience. I was also experiencing some strange symptoms which they claimed were related to my condition. Well, you dont make recommendations unless you have seen the patient and possibly ran some tests. When I asked about if they had read through and received my tests from out of state, they said they had. Yet, they had no clue about what my situation was. Just based their recommendations on I dont know what. And..this was done through a nurse, which I was also surprised by. Huge liability. Horrible and absolutely unacceptable. This place is probably great for people with advanced neuro needs which this clinic probably most likely satisfies. But follow up care, never. Dont bother..at least not for the dprt I was referred to. At least this is my experience with them and I will be looking elsewhere with another known clinic in the area. Horrible impression of Barrows....try to not lie to your patients or new patients. Makes you look cheap.

Keeping it Real

Barrow neurological, St Joseph's dismiss me for being what they call an unruly patient simply because I exercise my patient Bill of Rights. I exercise my patient Bill of Rights by stating clearly, and without any profanity, and in a normal tone of voice on the telephone to the office manager for Dr. Andrew little who does cervical spine surgery at St Joseph's Barrow neurological. The office staff we're not communicating with my providers for my medical records as requested by them through a fax request. I myself call for my records to be sent to my new Doctors, multiple times to no avail! I then contacted the office manager for Doctor, Andrew Little who is quite a obnoxious person to speak with! I told the office manager in a polite tone of voice without using profanities, that her staff was malfeasance and not providing the requested medical records to my new Doctors. She stated to me that the records had been sent to my providers, I then stated to her that they were not received, do you understande? The office manager then stated to me that she would resend the records but never did so. I placed a follow-up phone call with her and had quite a long time getting through to her office, when I did get her on the phone I told her that I had not received the information that she said she was sending me, and my providers, and that her office staff, and her were malfeasance. I stated to her that I was going to call the hospital's Patient Advocates office and file a complain, and I did just that after getting off the phone with her. Approximately two weeks latter, I received a certified letter from saint Joseph's Barrow neurological stating that they were no longer going to be providing me with services at any of their hospitals, and that I had 30 days left observers with them, and after that I would have to find another hospital to go to for services. In that letter it gave a phone number for the billing department and also another phone number, and that number turned out to be the CEO of Saint Joseph who I spoke with that day and asked why was I receiving this letter. he stayed it to me on the phone that I was a unruly patient when I asked why you didn't give me any reason why, and a very rude and condescending tone of voice and hung up on me, I asked what kind of CEO is he! He is a disgrace to the profession! Dr. Andrew little at Barrow neurological at sign off on the letter that was sent to me via certified mail, I have since filed a complaint with the Arizona medical board against Saint Joseph's hospital and the doctor himself. They have the nerve to call themselves Dignity Health,t what a joke that is ! My suggestion is if you want quality care and you can afford it go to Mayo Clinic they have a 5-star rating. If you want your surgeon to communicate with your other providers then I suggest you find another provider !! A quick follow-up in this review: being posted 8/28 2018. This case went to the Arizona medical board on 8/22 2018 and was submitted for dismissal. That's how arrogant Barrow neurological hospital is and how much power they wield here in the valley and throughout Arizona, there a multi-billion-dollar company that doesn't care about anyone! And I have the audacity to call themselves St Joseph's Hospital Hippocrates, using a saint's name in the name of their Hospital how appalling can that be the disrespect a saint of the Catholic Church are they really a Catholic hospital? I believe they are atheist, and a CEO St Joseph is a demon! Ask for dr. Andrew little I suggest you find a different doctor since he is a little person to act the way he did it just shows that he's just working for the almighty dollar! And does not cure for his patients in the least!

Jared Williams

Terrible patient care. Horrible office staff. The resident we met with for our first visit had to patient skill. Did not listen to our concerns or symptoms was only interested in the one sentence written on the referral. Couldn't schedule an appointment at that time had to call in later when there appointments were "open". We get here for our appointment after waiting now for 4 months only to be told that the appointment was canceled on the same day it was made. No help given bo cate shown. Only thing they could do was make another appointment for 2 months later. DO NOT COME HERE GET A REFERRAL SOMEWHERE ELSE. We have 4 or 5 other specialists waiting on these results. We never have to wait this long to see any other specialist, but everyone has to wait for this god complex doc and his little minions.
