I have been getting my hair colored, highlighted and cut here by Jessica and Juliet for 3+ years. Sure, I've tried other places in Seattle but Caruh is by far the best! Jessica is extremely knowledgeable about new and exciting coloring techniques! Believe me, under this awesome color I am " snow white" and only Jessica knows. The permanent color lasts well and doesn't fade. Juliet is a master at making my mane behave and she gives me cuts that are are easy to care for. I let them decide what's best but they are so good at taking input. They are absolutely the BEST!

I'm sitting at the salon as we speak. They really treat you like you bought a Groupon here. My stylist of two years that I found on Groupon moved to Cali so I figured I'd try my luck again since last time worked out so well. This was not the case here. I've been sitting in the processing area for OVER an hour while my hairstylist is doing foils on another client (he finished her ENTIRE foil while I've been sitting here). Not only has he not come to check on me once but no one has. I have never sat with blonde processing on my hair for this long and I have never had my stylist do another persons hair while I'm still waiting. My purse is even still at the station where he is working on another girls hair. I would think he would at least come check my foils before my hair falls out? I'm so mad right now that I may just walk out of here without washing my hair. What kind of salon does this? Worst customer service at a salon I have ever had. Wasted money and my whole afternoon. Later: I finally went and told the receptionist that I had been waiting there with blonde in my hair without being checked on for over an hour. A woman came and grabbed me and washed my hair right away. I never received an apology or anything from the stylist. One highlight: Natasha is very sweet- her blow drying my hair was definitely the highlight of this place but I will never go back. I was going to not say anything if my hair was great but my roots still look brassy and after 3.5 hours it was just a waste of time and money

Lorena has been cutting my hair for years, amazingly friendly and professional, she’s always a joy to spend an hour with. Happy to keep her as my barber at this newer barber shop she’s at. Steele is a great location, across from Whole Foods up on Roosevelt. The shop offers complimentary coffee, beers, even a decent whisky if you so choose. It’s associated with Aveda Salons so plenty of nice products for hair care after.

I've yet to have a negative or even average experience at this salon. Everyone, from the moment you walk in, works hard to make sure you feel valued, relaxed and heard. Today's visit I got a haircut and complimentary lip retouch. My stylist Kristen listened intently and thoroughly to my hair concerns and wishes and spoke with me about how we could go about the cut. She then went on to ask if there were any other concerns or areas I wanted to focus on. I felt immediately confident that my hair would look great and just like we had talked about. At Caruh after this conversation you receive a quick massage with some amazing smelling oil before your wash: I chose peppermint. I always look forward to this part because although it doesn't last more than 3-5 minutes, it feels great, smells amazing and really relaxes you into the experience. There is also a complimentary hand massage during your hair wash, also a plus! It's the little things like that that this salon does that really set it apart. My haircut went great, the overall vibe of the salon really comes through and makes for a relaxed, easy to talk atmosphere. After my cut and style (which looked AMAZING) I was offered a complimentary lip retouch which I've never done before. The woman (I believe her name was JoAnne) was knowledgable, complimentary and comfortable and helped me understand the products without any feeling of obligation to buy. For the last 6 years I've enjoyed going to Aveda salons in Utah, Florida and Washington, and since moving back to Seattle I've been to 3 different Aveda salons. Caruh however outranks them all when it comes to the talent of their stylists, the kindness of front desk staff and the overall atmosphere they provide. Well done!

I've had an amazing and terrible haircut here. If you are unfortunate enough to have Heather, maybe you'll get what you want if you tell her exactly what you don't want. Specified to keep my hair below my shoulders and have it layered. My hair now barely touches my shoulders (I'm a runner and can barely get it into a ponytail) and the "layers" are virtually non existent. To her credit, she asked if I wanted more layers. The answer is yes, but after the decimation there was no way I was going to ask her to continue cutting. I don't remember the person's name that cut my hair the first time, but she was amazing. She has black/dark brown hair and seems to usually wear a dress.

First of all, I'll just say that Caruh smells so.o.o. good. The Aveda products are fresh and ... what? ... inspiring, almost, because they're also made simply. From the front desk to the private rooms in back, staff are friendly and down to earth. No snootiness here. It's a comfortable, relaxing place to be. Good haircut, super cute, maybe best I’ve ever had. Went back in for a balayage. The front parts (the parts I can see) look like stripey highlights and in the back the color is kind of here and there, with huge chunks not colored and most of it just on my ends. Really uneven job for 200$. I have really thick hair. They kindly offered a redo. Looks much better and more natural. I absolutely love it. Fantastic facility and customer service.

It's going to be hard to keep this short, but I'll do my best. Every time I come to an appointment at Matthew Steele (formerly Caruh), I leave happier and more relaxed than I was when I arrived. It's like a mini-retreat from the chaos of daily life. More specifically: I moved to the Seattle area in 2003 and had an appointment for color with Jessica within a few weeks moving in. It's only now, 16 years later that I'm considering seeing someone else, and that's because I've moved 1500 miles away, so it's going to be a bit difficult to get in now :( If that's not enough of a recommendation, let me say this: everyone thinks I'm a natural redhead. Despite the fact that the exact shade of red varies considerably every 5 weeks or so. I also have furiously curly ("coily") hair, and learned a loooong time ago that I can't trust it to just anyone to cut. Erica is a goddess of curl. When women with similar hair will ask me who my stylist is, I send them over. They've all been happy with the results. She's *that* good. In other words, whether you're looking for someone to give you amazing, natural looking color or have curly hair that needs TLC, this salon has someone that can help. And they have a range of other stylists and colorists that are amazing, too (I've seen them when my regulars are on vacation). So, take a chance, deal with the parking, and get your appointment scheduled!

I just had the most disturbing experience with the owner of Matthew Steele Salon! OMG! As I write this review, I'm still shaking I'm so upset from the interaction with this owner several hours earlier!!! So, I've had 2 haircuts @ this salon at this point. My first haircut with Kate was beautiful and I loved it. My 2nd haircut, I really did not feel satisfied and requested an appt to have her tweek the cut a bit. The haircut cost $90 - extremely expensive and satisfaction should be a priority. I had requested more style to the cut and it was really plain. The first redo appt. I totally spaced and got the appt time wrong, so I missed the first redo appt. I apologized and rescheduled. Unfortunately, I could not get in because of this stylist's schedule for 2 more weeks, so that was one month after the initial appt. So, the appt is set for tomorrow. A few hours ago, I got a call from a man who identified himself as Matt from the salon. Honestly, it took me a bit to figure out who he was. He began to go on about how a haircut a month after the initial haircut is not a redo, but a new haircut and that he would have to charge me the full amount. I'm like, um, okay. Then, he went on to say something about a text that I had sent in response to the text scheduling system where there was cursing in the text!!! I'm like, What??!!!! Okay, so here's the thing. I don't think I've ever cursed in a text message in my life and certainly didn't text curse words in response to their text scheduling system! I began freaking out thinking that someone had hacked into my phone and my mind is racing worried about what was going on with my phone! Of course, I assured him that I had not in fact cursed any texting to them and got off the phone so that I could look into the situation. Checked with several friends - no security issues detected. As time when on, what I realized was that Matthew Steele Salon bought Caruh Salon. When I was a client @ Caruh Salon, I had a different phone number, so they texted my appt to my old phone number and apparently, the person who now has that number responded with curse words instead of yes or no to just be a jerk or because he/she was annoyed at getting a message that wasn't for him/her. What is funny about the situation is that I am not even techie enough to know that you could text curse words in lieu of yes or no! LOL I truly felt so insulted and offended by how Matthew of Matthew Steele Salon handled this whole situation!! Apparently, this cursing text happened 5 months ago with my very first appt there and no one alerted me! All this time, their staff has been thinking that I used cursing in response to their text and said nothing. I feel so violated. I rec'd this email "I appreciate the conversation and trust that it wasn't you." but the damage had been done. In the end, I emailed the owner expressing my upset and that I would not be returning to the salon. I mean, I am a 40+ year old professional woman! I am not sending cursing text messages and what would be the point of responding with curse words in response to an appt reminder? This makes absolutely no sense! I feel that this owner was truly appalling in his behavior. Maybe a switch in careers for him? I feel that he acted bullying in his behavior. And, I've just rec'd a threat from him to remove this review or I will be hearing from his attorney. Yes, this is bullying! Look, definitely pay $90+ for a haircut in Seattle if you are getting $90 worth of service. I did not get that at this salon. They did not understand the basics of true great client service and respect in my situation. Yes! Seattle is filled with plenty of hair salons who do provide spa like service. No need to settle for less. Btw, are all of these 230 reviews for this salon or are they for Caruh, the former salon? UPDATE: I got my hair cut @ a different salon and it looks gorgeous! The cut cost $65 and I tipped her $30 because this is a $90 cut!

This salon has had many updates over the years - I've come here off and on since it was called Strands and through at least 2 owners as Caruh. The current version is great -- the front desk staff is friendly, the stylists are good and there's not a lot of pushy upsell. The massages vary, none have been less than good, but some therapists work deeper than others, just let the front desk know what you're looking for.

I've had a great time every time I've gone to Kate at Caruh salon. I usually go to get my pixie cut touched up, which she does a great job at both keeping it clean and experimenting with whatever I feel like doing with my hair at the time. This last trip we dyed my hair, a first for me, a fantastic lavender pink blend. Kate was super careful lifting my virgin dark brown hair to an almost white with minimal damage to get me exactly what i wanted. My hair is still soft andabsolutely love how it turned out and can't wait to go back and experiment more.

I can't speak highly enough of this salon. I had never before been to an Aveda salon, so that in itself made this a decadent experience for me with the lush and natural scents and products they use. Courtney was stylist who gave me a basic layered haircut. She was warm, genuine, and listened super well. I called this place for a cut on a whim on Saturday, and they were able to schedule me that same day. Environment was very calming, they didn't push products, and gave nice massage. Kate Roche-Sudar was great, she listened to what cut I wanted, and gave her suggestions. I emphasized that I wanted a very low maintenance cut (wash and go), and that's what I got, but it suited me better than my previous cut. Kate was skilled and detail oriented, and her adjustments after the cut on dry hair really gave a polished finish. I'm looking forward to going back in half a year.

I had a fantastic first time experience today receiving a 30min massage from Helena! I used to receive massages weekly at another spa, but got out of the routine and haven't had one in over 3 months. I was worried that with only 30min, Helena wouldn't have enough time to really make a dent in my tense shoulders and neck, but she surpassed my expectations and I walked out feeling incredibly revitalized. I can't even imagine how wonderful a full hour would be. So happy to have Caruh in the neighborhood and part of my new routine!

If you need color and a cut, go for Tess. I needed a new color. I'm really gray - almost white - and been doing the brown dye for too long. Got just what I wanted from Tess! A light wheat color overall that we can then transition with highlights over time to the no dye period I'm embarking on... She did great and what other salons had said.... "Oh no you should be brown due to you skin tone". Well, skin tone aside, we all go gray at some point! It's just a matter of doing it gracefully.... Going back in 4-6 weeks where I was coloring before in 2-3 weeks! Very happy!

But they combine well, the return policy is terrific, they have little or no fragrance (and that which they do have is light) and work well with challenging conditions like my own.

I have been going to this salon for years and recently the service has declined. I typically go every 5-7 weeks for a root color touch up. I've had to wait 15-30 minutes past my appointment start time on more than a few occasions in some of my most recent visits. Also, I am handed off to other random workers to wash and style my hair. I make my appointments and pay the stylist rate for a particular individual because I like the way they blow out and style my hair. The past few experiences have been very impersonal and rushed. My last appointment they were in such a rush that the color on my roots left a dye line a half an inch past my hairline on to my forehead. I think they are more concerned about trying to maximize the number of appointments scheduled and over book time slots. Sadly I will be finding a new salon.

Caruh's "spa membership" program is an almost ridiculously good deal -- for $100 a month, you can get two one-hour massages! That's only $50 a massage, which is only $20 more than I was paying in co-pays for massages covered by my health plan (of which I'm limited to only 10 appointments a year -- never enough to make much of a difference). That I can continue to get such professional help for my chronic pain issues through Julie, the greatest, kindest, gentlest, most understanding massage therapist I've EVER MET, has made a huge difference to my quality of life. Caruh's staff are all so wonderful -- and walking into the salon/spa itself is always a breath of fresh air. You're treated to tea and pampering as soon as you walk in the door, everybody is always on time and happy to see you. It truly always IS "a beautiful day at Caruh" (how they always answer the phone, which I love!). Thank you, thank you, thank you!! (p.s. Caruh also donated an amazingly generous spa treatment package to Purrfect Pals No-Kill Cat Shelter this year, by the way, and they do a TON of charity work -- their commitment not only to their clients but to their entire community is just one more of the many incredible things about this business. You could not find a better spa in Seattle, if you ask me. GO HERE NOW!)

I love the Aveda tea (or the fruit water) and the robe to keep your outfit in good shape. Then you pick an essential oil and your stylist will help you relax, plus there is a great hand massage after the shampoo. I see Amber who does a great precision cut. Keep it up, Caruh! The only thing I could suggest would be the ability to book appointments online (like through ZocDoc).
