Least expensive haircut you'll ever get. You have to patient because they're students, so they're learning and it takes much longer than it needs to. The downside is that you usually can't get the same person twice, but the instructors are thorough and make sure you get what you ask for.

I specifically asked the lady named Elsa who did my hair to cut about 4/5 inches off and she cut over a foot off my hair. My hair was down to my butt and it’s now to my shoulders. VERY VERY UPSET! She was very friendly and great convo but the fact she can’t measure and she’s graduating in November is a little concerning. Will not go back at all.

Overall A great place to come and get your hair done. The services are priced really well and are based on the amount of product you used, not by hour. I came in for a full highlight and ended up paying $30 for a service that would have cost me $200+ at any other salon. My friend Gabby is a current student there and has been doing my hair for the last 6 months at Aveda. The services have turned out great each time I’ve been in. Keep in mind this is a school and the students are being instructed by stylists whenever they need help, so it might take a little longer than a regular salon service, but the wait time is well worth the price you pay in the end. The only complaint that I have about Aveda is the check in process. I’ve been to the school 5 times now and each time I have to fill out first, last name, phone number, email, and if the service is for a minor. I wish that since the appointment was prebooked and my information is already in the system that I didn’t have to fill everything out each time I went in. They need to improve the system for convenience of checking in to make it a quick and easy process. A minor annoyance, and nothing too serious. Overall I’m pleased with the results from Aveda and have enjoyed getting my hair services done here.

I've received amazing 1 hour facials ($25-30) at Aveda Institute in a swanky Pearl warehouse for at least 8 years. I love them. They now offer a body wrap and waxing services at a bargain! Haircuts take 40-60 mins, so I quit that - plus the price can be same as Super Cuts. They do a great promo after Black Friday which always brings me back. @Studio.Gauthier. 2019

I've had some wonderful experiences at the Aveda Institute! I get my hair colored here, and will occasionally have bang trims done here in between appointments with my regular hair stylist. The student I see currently is Dede, and she's been one of the best I've worked with. Dede is not only excellent and efficient in her work, she is personally delightful to work with. She is sweet, friendly, professional, and demonstrates care for/interest in her clients. I've also seen Cynthia here, and she's equally as wonderful! I see both Cynthia and Dede and usually go with whomever's schedule aligns best with mine in a given week. I'll miss them both when they graduate!

I had a great experience at the Chicago school, so figured I’d check out Portland’s location. Unfortunately, this did not live up to my experience in Chicago. I had an 11am appointment and wasn’t seen until 1130. When asked about my appointment, they said my stylist was setting up her station...for 30 minutes??? Overall, my stylist did a nice job but she had no confidence in what she was doing and no customer service skills. That led to a nearly hour and a half hair cut. On top of that, almost all the students were on their phone for goodness sakes! Even if they had a customer! It was so unprofessional. Hair cutting is a people business, and no one seems to understand that there. I love the price of the haircuts but with awful customer service, excessive wait times, and students who aren’t confident in their abilities, that makes me want to take my business else where. Know what you’re signing up for and have very low expectations if you go to Aveda.

I have been getting haircuts and brow waxes from Angelina for a few months now, and I love everything she’s done for me. On my first visit, she patiently listened to the issues I was having with my hair and gave me the perfect cut to solve them. I’ve visited her twice since that first cut and she has replicated the cut beautifully both times. For someone who is picky about their hair and hesitant to visit new stylists, I could not have imagined a better situation! I highly recommend working with her and I will continue to do so. She is talented and professional, and on a personal level, delightful to spend time with!

I wanted a bright highlight and had been for a consult during which both the student and the supervisor told me it can be done on another day (3 hour procedure). So I booked an appointment solely based on that student's availability. I reached 10 minutes in advance but I had to wait 40 minutes until they told me that the student was absent. Then they assigned another student and her supervisor told me that I should have gotten a strand test done on the day of my consult. Now I had to get the strand test done which took 40 minutes and the result wasn't what I had shown them with a picture for reference. The supervisor finally told me that i would not be able to get that color done in one sitting. I just don't know why all this wasn't done during my consult. It was a huge waste of time and shows the incompetence of the supervisors! The biggest surprise for me was they expect you to be okay with their lack of empathy.

This school is a joke. The staff treats the students so poorly. Instructors will get mad at students and blame students for their mistakes. The instructors are constantly getting fired/changed around. There is now a promotion if you write a positive google review you can get $5 off your service. If you have to basically take money off of services just to boost your reviews you’re clearly doing something wrong. Those students look miserable... They want you to write all of these nice reviews to hide all of the TRUE and FACTUAL reviews about them. Sid is a bully and harasses students and clients. I’ve never felt more uncomfortable and completely disrespected by someone in my life. The girls all seem extremely uncomfortable around Danny.

This place is a complete joke got here early for my 115 appointment just to be made until after 125 to be told my person wasn't there so the guy rescheduled me for 2pm and because I'm nice I sit and wait well guess guess 2pm comes and goes with no communication from any one I finally left at 215 smh what a joke I took time off work to be here and be serviced and this is the result such a waste it wont happen again. So much for trying new things if I had it my way I wouldn't have left the one star.....

I came to the school to get a hair cut from Angelina not expecting how short I wanted my hair. I told Angelina I want it short since I have had long hair for long, so I was nervous. She washed my hair with a very nice head massage. After she cut it, it was the PERCECT length. She did an amazing job cutting it to a the perfect short length. She layered it perfectly so it looks naturally blended with my hair. She also styled it beautifully! I definitely recommend booking with Angelina if you ever stop by the Aveda Institute of Portland!

Went in to get my hair dyed to match my natural hair color (had some blonde in my hair I wanted to get rid of), and it was an amazing experience! Both the stylist and her supervisor listened to what I wanted, and made a mix of dye that did in fact match my natural brunette color. My stylist was friendly and kind the entire visit. I am extremely pleased with how amazing my hair looks (especially considering the cost)!

They don't seem to have any qualms canceling your appointment less than an hour beforehand because this has happened to us twice now. Apparently the student went home early, and no one was available to cover the appointment. Although the prices are good, everyone already knows to temper their expectations since the students are still learning their craft, but everyone should also be prepared to make other plans and definitely not coordinate their day too rigidly around the appointment itself.

Both my husband and I went for haircuts and colors. I had Stephanie as my stylist. She was great! She consulted with me about my hair, my hair color desires, and even gave me great tips on styling my curly mane. She answered all of my questions and didn't laugh when I kept asking for "The Lazy Woman's Guide to Great Curly Hair." (I like to sleep in, OKAY?) I'd definitely go back.

I made appointments for my 5 year old and I at the same time I told them she was 5 and they said no problem. When I got there they said it was against their policy. So I got her hair cut and reschedule mine. A few days later I went and got my hair cut. I asked for a long aline bob the back is very short like a boy and is butchered it’s completely uneven and goes up and down. The student didn’t know what she was doing and kept dropping the comb on the ground and using it. Gross! It took two hours and she had to keep getting the instructor to fix it. I will never go back, especially not to get it fixed. this place is a joke. I have to wait for it to grow out with this horrible cut before it can even be fixed.

Really horrible experience!! I called a week or more in advance and scheduled an appointment to have my mom (from out of town), my daughter and myself come in to get our nails painted. It was going to be my daughters first manicure and was a birthday present (a special gift for me to have both my daughter and my mom to have 'girl time' together). They sent me a confirmation e-mail a day or so before the appointment, so I thought all was fine. Then we show up and they tell us that they can't get us in. No apology, no effort to re-schedule, all she said was people have been calling in sick. We don't live downtown, so this was 20-25 min. drive into downtown, then looking for parking only to be kicked out.

I have had my hair colored brown three times in the last six month and it turns reddish orange after 2 weeks and every time I mention it to a manage “it’s my hair that’s the problem. I went in for hair color. I asked for a specific color. The girl put on the hair dye and then went to Starbucks. She didn't check my color at all. She came back half an hour later and after she rinsed it, it was black. I looked like I was wearing a wig. She took three hours and still had to rush to finish in time for me to leave for a business meeting. When I scratched my head during the meeting, I looked at my hand and it was completely covered in hair dye. It hadn't been rinsed. It was hours before I'd be able to go home and rinse. So embarrassing and damaging to hair. And this girl was just about to graduate. So based on that, I wouldn't recommend.

Terrible experience. They don’t care about costumer service at all. They told me that they could get me in, then told me they couldn’t, then told me they could again, made me wait for 20 minutes just to tell me again that they couldn’t get me in even though I had an appointment. They were rude when helping me. Overall I would skip and find a different place to get your haircut. I’d rather pay the money to go to a regular Aveda then deal with these people anyway.

Aveda institute Portland has provided me with one of the best experiences I’ve had at any salon/spa ever. Alexis G, the student who worked on my service, was professional and inviting. She offered a beverage at the beginning of the visit. I was able to sample some of the delicious tea they offer for sale. Alexis also made sure I left satisfied. I will definitely reschedule with Alexis and I would absolutely recommend visiting Aveda to anyone who is looking for quality service with a palatable price.

Don't go here for wax - I am mainly posting this because they have had this problem for years, where the lighting is poor, and I always leave with chunks of hair not waxed off (arms). Today was especially bad since they didn't even wax the back of my upper arm, even though I paid for a full arm wax. Hopefully this review will be a wake-up call to Aveda Portland. All you need is some portable rolling lights for your wax appointments. The students and staff are always nice and great to talk to.

I been going to Angelina Xayachack since the very beginning when she first started school and needed models to do hair and such. Since then, she has gotten so much better. She’s takes her time to perfect her work and does an amazing job. She recently just did my hair, I had some blonde I wanted to get rid of before my wedding day so I asked her if she could get me back to my natural hair and she did just that! It was quick and easy, she sweet and very easy to talk to, definitely makes the time go by faster! She’s really good at what she does and she shows passion! Thanks Angelina! Been going for years now and love this place. Recently had the worst pedicure ever. No lotion was used. No leg message or foot massage, my feet felt like a snake when I got home. Only one coat of polish and no top coat. She had me leave right away, no time for drying. 3 days into a Hawaii trip 5 toes had no polish on them. This isn't anything like what I was used to at this location. Usually its a good deal and with a little patience, its a very positive experience.

I've been going here for a while now for the reasonably priced Aveda treatments. Haircuts for $12? Sign me up. People always forget that they offer facials as well. All of them count toward the loyalty card, which is rad bc after 3 you get a haircut or facial for free! Students are generally pretty good at cutting hair and will call on instructors for help. Always feel like a goddess walking out.

My girlfriend got the absolutely worst haircut of her life here. She literally was crying in the chair it was so bad. These are student who cut customers hair and they clearly do not know what they are doing. Worst part was, their instructor told them they were doing a good job and it was a total hack job. Never going to another aveda again...

Second time coming here and i am very pleased. Got several services including eyebrow, underarm wax, and haircut. My stylist Maddie D. Was awesome and incredibly patient with my dog who was hanging out with me during the wax! She did a great job on my brows and listened to my requests of leaving as much volume as possible. She also did my hair and I enjoyed chatting with her the whole time! Aveda is an awesome full service salon and i will definitely keep coming for all of my styling needs. So glad i found this place!

Wanted to love this place, which is why I gave it several chances over several years. Their services take WAY too long; students do not know what they're doing for even the most basic things (simple trim, no layers); not enough supervisors on the floor so don't expect much help there either. I've learned more about the Aveda corporation as well -- most of their products are not organic, natural, etc like their advertising claims; they treat their students poorly and charge them exorbitant school fees; high staff turnover makes me question what kind of work environment they offer. The last straw: at my last appt, the students are now required to do a survey going on about "what do you like about your hair? what don't you like? what products do you use?" etc just so Aveda can peddle more of its products onto me. A simple haircut already takes 2 hours and now they want to waste even more of my time with nonsense marketing questions up front? Nah. Instead I'll be trying the other haircut school in town, and/or Groupon specials at local salons. If you value your time & care how corporations behave, don't go here.

I came here for a trim just to freshen up my hair, and I left smelling AMAZING and looking great!! I was very happy with my haircut and felt confident in the students and instructors there. The only complaint I have is that I had to stand for my actual haircut because I have long hair and the chairs don't go up very tall - but other than that everything was great. She shampooed, conditioned, did a masque, cut my hair, then blow dried it and showed me the products she used and then I was done! It all took about 1 hour and 10 minutes. I highly recommend coming here if you don't want to pay $45 for a trim!

I love this place! I find it hard to budget for coloring my hair (which is a non-negotiable in my life), so thank goodness for the Aveda Institute! There is no way, anywhere in town where you can get services at such a low price, even with Groupon. It’s not a compromise, though, since you can always rely on quality Aveda product and expert execution because, even though students are purveying the service, veteran instructors make check points during every phase of your visit. The only disadvantage that I can imagine is that services may take longer at the Institute, but it’s worth the money saved. Moreover, I feel great about supporting a company that is altruistic... The Aveda brand is concious of environmental and humanitarian issues, and I even got a discount for taking public transit. Fantastic!

I received a Tulasara facial and a pedicure, I added a paraffin dip to my pedicure. Both services were amazing. I received a very thorough consultation with the student and the student the was shadowing. They then went and got their instructor and she came in and looked at my skin, both confirming the students treatment plan and adding some helpful tips. The instructor also had a new instructor shadowing her which I thought was really awesome. This was an undercover mission for myself as I was considering applying to work at the institute as an Educator. I loved everything I saw, and am now employed with the company. So far everything has been amazing. I highly recommend you come in and experience the Aveda way for yourself.

It’s a 25 minute drive here plus paying for parking. WHY ON EARTH WOULD I WANT TO COME BACK? This place is a joke.

Sid is absolutely rude. Not to mention one of the instructors, I think it was Brena? Did not like her tone of voice and she was very strict and rude to the students as well. Another instructor that seems off was Danny? Students seem very uncomfortable around him. Staff needs some work, very intimidating especially for the students. You can tell they’re very uncomfortable. I’ve been a customer for some time now and my niece attends here as well. and a lot has changed, students seem to be under a lot of stress now. I think the staff needs to be more worried about taking care of their students instead of trying to make everything else perfect.

Great service! For being students, they do a great job and you can tell that they care a lot about learning and doing a good job. I’ve been here 4 or 5 times and I have curly difficult hair, but everytime I come in I get some one who takes there time and asks their teachers lots of questions and makes sure that they are thorough in their work. Also, great price for students at 10$ for a hair cut. I will definitely keep coming here! The only problem I have ran into is sometimes when I leave my hair is pretty frizzy, just from their drying techniques. Because my hair is curly it doesn’t like to be messed with that much after I get it washed. Thanks!

I come here to get blow outs and bang trims. Tbh I really like it. It's a very casual environment, the students are earnest and the teachers are nice. It takes more time, and sometimes isn't exactly as I thought it'd be but like I expect that. It's a school, they're learning! Had a manicure and pedicure with Natalie S. She was great! I only gave 3 stars because I have noticed the quality of their paraffin dip and files really have gone down in recent years. I get the need to cut costs but I used to associate quality with Aveda but no longer. I wonder if Aveda knows this franchise is not up to standards regarding tools?

It took me multiple negative experiences at the front desk with “ Syd” before I decided to write this review. The lack of care and rudeness seems far from Aveda’s high standards. I’m not surprised to see other reviews with negative Syd experiences. I have no idea how Syd ever even got a job at Aveda I’m told she was recently promoted to director. I have had many positive hair services at the Aveda PortlAnd location but always dread my encounters with Syd. She is consistently rude and unhelpful. Multiple students have told me that Syd is frequently complained about and causes so much tension and unhappiness with guests, instructors and students. Hopefully Aveda will figure out that they have a real lemon that they have recently promoted....no idea how this happened
