I now fly across the country to get my hair cut here. I grew up in NYC and have been lucky enough to get my hair cut in many of the best salons. None of them even compares to how much I love Varin Salon. Having moved to California two years ago, I now find myself flying to New York to get my hair cut because Yann is simply THE BEST. Finding a stylist whom you can trust completely is rare. Finding one who also happens to be one of the nicest, most charming, and lovely individuals ever — even more so. I leave feeling great every time. The cut lasts and I find I have to put minimal effort into maintaining it and blowing it out. He’s even persuaded me to recently try a shorter cut which I absolutely LOVE. I’ll add that I've been through some ups and downs with my hair. Damage after color (sigh) and mis-steps on my own, and each time I go in Yann is able to transform my hair and has indeed saved it from what felt like the brink of destruction a while back. Every time I go there I just feel happy to see the people who work there. Philippe who works at the desk is absolutely wonderful (and beautiful). They have an amazing team and a new colorist, Mara, who did an amazing job on very subtle highlights for me. I cannot recommend this salon more highly. The cuts, the color, the treatments, the people, the experience. Go. And then hope you don’t have to move across the country.

Great salon! Been going here for about 7 years. I went there randomly at first when my original hair cutter left abruptly from the salon I was using.I bounced around a few places but could not get a haircutter I liked. Finally, my wife suggested I try Varin as they do a lot of men's cuts and she thought the cuts looked good from what she saw. I saw Judy and couldn't be more pleased with the haircut she gave me. Judy's haircuts are the best I ever had. She takes her time to make sure everything is perfect and it very pleasant to speak to. The owner always comes by and says hello and they always offer drinks to anyone there. I have now moved away from the neighborhood but still commute 20 minutes from Harlem just to get my hair cut. If you knew how lazy I was you would know that this is the equivalent of a normal person walking from coast to coast. Judy / Varin is the best and that's what keeps me coming back.

So normally I dont write reviews but this one is a must this was the best salon I'd have ever been to in the city hands down they really care about your hair and take care of you. One of my coworkers recommend me n I recommend everyone else. The only issue I have is that when I was getting my conditioning treatment I overheard one of the girls talking about how she not even licensed to work in a hair salon, now I dont work or do hair but u shouldnt be telling people that, its noones business and I dont think it great conduct to let others know that and talking so loud about it. Plus a good friend of mine told me that if you are not licensed then you shouldnt be touching people at all I pray they fix the problem because I will hate to not being able to come back because of violations. Overall great experience and I will be come back very soon

I gave it a lot of thoughts before I decided to post this comments and I am NOT sure what happened because the other reviewers have nothing but great things to say about this place. I purchased a Gilt city Boucher last July for full Balayage, brought a picture of a girl with similar hair type an complexion as a guide. To make the story short I walked in with below the shoulder hair length, see pic below, the hair colorist must had been an apprentice that she bleached my hair to a point that I lost 50% and the rest was so damaged that I had to get a haircut above my ears. When I called the next day they treated me like I had done something to them when I was the victim. The first photo was the guide, the 2nd was my hair original hair before they touched it, the rest was the result. Oh and to top things I walked out with wet hair :)

Can't imagine going anywhere else on Madison Avenue. Great location. Atmosphere is very relaxed and the staff is very courteous. Yann is very professional and charming. Judy is a top stylist, creative and yet attentive to a client's wishes. Teresa is the best colorist and believe me, I have tried many over the years! If you are looking for a Keratin straightening treatment, there is no one better than Ricardo. He has done extensive research on all products on the market. Have been going to the salon for over 6 years, why go elsewhere?

Tia is amazing with the balyage color treatment - extremely patient and attune to the color that fits your face the best. I have been a client of Yann Varin , owner and head stylist of the Varin salon on 768 Madison avenue for five years , the salon itself is a refined, simple space, elegant and unpretentious. There , women of all ages can feel confident in the creativity of the stylist Yann has assembled . the hair cuts i received from Yann are a little edgy and classic at the same time , I have very short hair and yet he manages to tweak the cut , always discussing his ideas before beginning the cut . I couldn't be happier with the results . Mara , a new colorist has been added to the team , she has a wonderful eye ,lightening my blonde hair to a color that i always wanted .She did this without creating the itchy scalp that usually occurs when i do coloring . The search is over. Yann is the best hairstylist in the city. I was getting my brows done by Angela at Exhale (Madison Ave) and asked her who she recommended for a haircut. She said she only reconended 1 person - a Frenchman named Yann Varin, the owner of Varin Salon. She said he took the time to study the face, the hair and that he was talented and technically perfect. I wasted no time in walking the 10 blocks to his salon to see if he was there and had time to see me. The friendly front desk attendant quickly went to get Yann who was in between appointments. The salon was pleasantly busy and Yann sat down with me to go over what I was looking for. I have dark, medium/long length, wavy/curly hair and had the same cut and look for so long so was looking for a refresh. He was sweet, relaxed, very attentive, matter of fact, he Listened, he took his time, he thought before he spoke, he was an angel. He carefully assessed my hair and face and said he had 3 recommendations for me. The first was to keep the length but add face framing layers. The second was a shorter cut with longer side swept bangs to give me more volume at the crown. The 3rd was a combo of 1 and 2. The consult was 20 minutes or so and he had great Pinterest photos to reference the looks he recommended. I was sold on how professional and knowledgeable he was. He had a client waiting so he asked if I could come back in an hour. I gladly did. Since it was my first appointment he took his time and I was in no rush. Hes a great conversationalist and gives thoughts to his answers and questions. He would cut and measure, have me stand, have me sit. He'd look at the head from different angles and the chair was right by a large window that let in great light. He would take a few steps back to check the work as he was going along. He wasn't one of those who just kept his head down and chopped away. Again, technically perfect. In the end of that wonderful 2 hours, I am the proud owner of a gorgeous head of hair. Medium length, light layers at the crown that give me volume and movement, sexy, long side swept bangs. My hair was washed and then Yann took over from the cut to the blow dry. He also used a curling iron to bring out the layers a bit. My hair is happy again. Movement and shine have been restored and my hair smells heavenly as an added bonus. Salon is friendly, sophisticated without trying, clean, light filled, not at all pretentious and happy clients flowed in and out. Go!
