Carson was great! I had never dyed my hair before but this place had good reviews and I was feeling adventurous. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted, but asked for something “natural looking” and showed Carson pictures of balayages I liked and didn’t like, and let him interpret that for my own hair. I’m really happy with the results! He also gave me helpful advice for making the color last. Note that this place is cash only, so for a balayage, bring at least $300.

Nicole is AMAZING, if you're blonde looking for balayage / highlights she is great. Nicole recommended doing a few things to get to the colour I wanted. Also had an unplanned haircut which I love too! She knows and understands blonde highlighted hair, which everyone knows is tricky if you are naturally a brunette. Very flexible with moving your appt if needs be. I have been to a few colourists in the city but wouldn't go anywhere else now!

The moment you finish speaking with the warm and welcoming receptionist, someone will help you with your coat, offer to take any bags, bring coffee or water or offer to charge your electronics. The shampoo beforehand - and after - is slow, careful and luxurious. Nothing here is perfunctory or rushed, no one is snippy or harried. They hew to the highest standards of NYC's finest salons - but they banished the tedious ostentation, prissiness, the tacky glitz (or holistic nordic spa delusions) and pretensions that other top-tier salons shamelessly upcharge for.. The entire team is peerless. The reason they have nearly unanimous five star ratings is because they earn it and deserve it. Feel free to go to salons in SoHo, TriBeCa, or uptown. You''ll certainly pay more. You'll absolutely leave with less. Unfade is worth any detour. Jack is the stylist I followed here. He's been cutting my hair and my mother's hair for a couple of years now, and finding him has been the happiest of accidents. I've been alive a long time and many exceptional stylists have cut my hair. Jack may well be the best. His laser-like focus, his meticulousness and precision, is entrancing and almost spooky, particularly as he's finishing, when It's no exaggeration to say he's down to calibrating the lengths of single strands of hair. I ask for the plainest of short haircuts, but there's nothing simple or plain about what he does. With little leeway, by his layering, proportions, texturing, superfine scissorwork and his uncanny talent, the result is stunning. Anybody can give me a short haircut. Very few can give me one as finely tailored as this - or one as durable. My hair will continue to look elegantly cut for almost two months, not that I deliberately wait that long, but sometimes I don't have the time to get around to it. For short hair to look this good requires rarely seen skill, and Jack is genuinely gifted. And since he cuts my mother's hair as well, I know that whether you come in asking for a specific cut or whether you come in and let him decide entirely what would look best on you, when he's finished, he'll have exceeded your every expectation. I was super impressed with Carson's attention to detail when doing my hair. He suggested a hairstyle that was a compromise between what I wanted and what was actually achievable on my hair. I was there for over 5 hours and always felt extremely taken care of. Carson worked in small sections of my hair and was extremely focused when hand-painting the balayage. Carson's assistant Nick also did a really nice job with the lowlights. I will definitely be back to Unfade next time I want to change my hair!

This is my third time at Unfade and it has been absolutely amazing every single time that I’ve been back! The service is great and friendly, and the place is welcoming. If it’s your first time here, they tend to do a consultation first a few days prior to your appointment, which was greatly appreciated to know what kind of a look you’re going for. I had my hair done with Carson (which I highly highly recommend!!) and went with an ashy brown balayage with low light. Very happy with the results and loved how detailed Carson was to help me achieve the look I wanted, as well as teaching me how to maintain the color and texture of my hair afterwards!

Not the best experience went about a month ago to see how it would turn out over time. I’m a brunette and wanted to go blonde clearly saying full blonde not highlights... left with highlights. As he was working on it I said it looks like he’s doing highlights he simply said “no”. The man doing my hair also told his assistant 30 more mins of bleach, I checked the time and when 30 min came no one was in sight! About 45 min passed before they came. I’ve gotten my hair bleached before but cut it off a couple yrs ago, anyway after bleaching it before I stopped using heat and put hair masks in and my hair went back to its soft feeling as before the bleach. This time a month passed with the same process and my hair feels disgusting and I used low heat on it and my piece of my hair fell off. Another thing is that they asked what color I wanted the blonde and I said not white yet they still made it white:/ lastly the place had cut hair everywhere on the floor and no one showed the intention of cleaning it. Place is a scam costed me $350 for a horrible experience.

He also provided thorough explanations as well as recommendations along the treatment to ensure that I got what I was looking for. The only downside is that this place is cash only and doesn’t have an ATM (or banks nearby). So please come prepared if you THINK you may add on other treatments.

Jack from Unfade is amazing! I’ve gotten a full balayage done by Jack multiple times and he does a great job creating the most perfect ashy brown hair. I have very stubborn hair that takes a while to bleach but Jack is super patient and never rushes the process. I’ve also very recently had my hair cut super short (chopped off ~10inches) by Jack and he is an equally great hair stylist as he is a colorist. Upon your first appointment, Jack will let you know what your options are based on your current hair situation. He is very well versed in the business so I trust him 100%. I highly recommend!!

Just moved to the neighborhood and walked by a few times. Woke up today feeling busted (my hairs been growing for year) walked right in and asked if I could get a cut (id recommend making an appointment) and luckily was able to be seen right away. Allow me to start by giving a quick rundown on the natural state of my hair. I have naturally pitch black Asian hair that can be quite difficult to lift. I'd went to Carson before to get beautiful, vivid color. I was pleased to find out that he's incredibly well versed in creating beautiful blondes and silvers as well. Carson gave me a gorgeous silver mane while maintaining the structural integrity of my naturally black hair--no split ends! I should also mention that his shadow root game is unparalleled. He was hesitant at first out of concern for additional damage (Carson will always put your hair first and never push anything onto you) but I managed to convince him and I’m so glad I did because my hair came out better than I expected. This review is for Carson, highly recommending him as your go to. This is my first time having someone do balayage and foilayage on my hair and I am proud to say that I picked the right person. I had virgin black hair and Carson spent around 6 hrs on it. From beginning to the end, he was there for the whole process. He was very detailed and explained to me what he did after every step, from hair washing, bleaching, coloring, styling, etc. Even when he was trying to comb out my hair at the wash station, he told me about it lol. Anyway, my hair looks great and I had sooooo many compliments which obviously made me very happy. He cared about my opinion and made his best effort to make the color as subtle as possible since I work in the medical field, I can't go too crazy. And honestly, it is hard to be subtle but at the same time look nice. Now I have awesome ash blonde hair and I love it

When your hair colorist gives you specific instructions for aftercare, you listen to him. My own negligence (and laziness, really) resulted in my hair turning ORAAAAANGE. No amount of blue shampoo could have saved my hair after weeks of neglect. I was starting a new job soon and I couldn’t go be walking around my new office with orange hair. My hair has already been bleached four times within the year, so I was worried about breakage. But I had none, thanks to Carson. I wouldn’t trust anyone else to take care of my hair and he was able to take my hair from orange to a beautiful, dimensional blonde. Carson impressed me so much. He’s my new colorist! Went for an ash blonde balayage. He spent an hour explaining he process, assessing my hair type to see if my hair could accomplish the level of blonde I wanted. I spent 5hrs in there. However it didn’t feel like it. Each process was timed accurately and I was moved from the chair to sink regularly. I went in with previously color treated hair. He was precise and professional. His assistant was also great! Nicole is incredible. When I first moved to Manhattan, I was looking for a new hair stylist who would be able to do a blowout once a week and help me progress toward my hair goals. I never thought that I would try coloring my hair, as I was always terrified that I would ruin it. After seeing Nicole for eight months, though, and having her consistently leave me stunned with her work, I nervously asked about going platinum blonde on a whim. She was honest and told me that it would take months, involve a lot of maintenance, slow down my progress toward my long-term goal of lengthening my hair, and that I should try highlights first to see if I liked it. At this point, I trusted Nicole completely, as she is truly talented, an absolute perfectionist, and undeniably an artist with a clear style and aesthetic that I love. So, we started off with blonde balayage, which turned out so well, and advised that we should wait a couple of months to go more blonde if I still wanted to. Sure enough, eight weeks later, I was back, and we bleached the rest of my hair, which came out beautifully. Again, Nicole said that we should wait a couple of months before doing more, as it would allow my hair time to recover and prevent it from becoming overly damaged. I loved the change, and I could not believe how soft and healthy my hair was despite treating it, so I decided to go platinum eight weeks later. Today, I am about to go back to get my roots done after being platinum for two months, and wow, I am still shocked at how beautiful and damage-free my hair is. In short, I am so, so, so thankful I met Nicole, and I cannot recommend her enough; she is so talented and such a genuine, good-hearted person, and I will follow her to wherever her career takes her.

I saw Jack's work on Instagram and felt like he was the one who would do a good job of dying my hair (I'm a newbie) and he did not disappoint. I've been getting compliments nonstop, even from complete strangers! I really appreciate the work that Jack and his assistant, Nick, did for my hair. I can't wait to go back for my touch-up in a few months :)
