I've been to Tomoko a few times. I usually get Tikka and love her. So happy to have found my go-to salon. They are always accommodating with scheduling. Highly recommended.

I booked an appointment on the phone for a hair colour touch-up and was told a blowout would be an additional charge, which is standard practice. I said I didn't want a blowout and just needed a simple dry. I was then told that in that case I would have to dry my hair myself (certainly not standard practice), and, then, the shocking part -- I was told that it was standard to leave a 20% tip. I found that bit of gratuitous information really offensive -- I speak with an accent -- and just a bit racist. I cancelled that appointment and will not be going back.

Grace was great. The hair wash was very relaxing, and she was meticulous about cutting my very thick hair. She also gave very helpful tips on maintaining my hairstyle.

I scheduled a Japanese straightening. I had a 25 minute conversation with the young lady who was doing my hair and answered all her questions over the phone to be sure we were set to start. A consultation over the phone as she stated! A specific question she asked was - "do I color my hair?" "I do" I replied. She only said - you can't color your hair two weeks before and two weeks prior to the straightening! No problem as this was standard and I have gotten this treatment many times before! I showed up for my appointment - and she saw my hair and said - "you have highlights? - I won't do your hair!" Apparently since I didn't answer specifically enough over the phone to her - she refused to do my hair when I arrived. She took an aggressive stand and all she offered was to speak to her manager! We had such a long conversation over the phone and being that she is the expert - this question should have been asked prior - don't you think? I spent money to go downtown and she was not even apologetic about her mistake. I guess my mistake though - I was calling another Tomoko Hair Salon in the city and accidentally got this place! If you are like me - don't make mistake and call wrong salon and get sucked into doing your hair at this salon! Go with the professionals.

I've been coming here for a little less than 2 years now. It's a little underground sanctuary on 14th street. The woman haircuts are reasonably priced for the area at $45-55. They set me up initially with Grace and I've been with her since. She did wonders with my flat Asian hair and every time I go back for a cut, even a bang trim, it looks great. The staff is nice and always provides you a tea or water beverage choice when you arrive. Also, the online booking system works so well and makes entire experience even more seamless.

I've been coming here for over a year now, seeing stylist Grace Rotondi. I highly recommend Grace, as she's sweet and great at cutting and styling hair. I tend to go for a more feminine look with lots of layers, and she does exactly what I want. My hair is thick, coarse, and Asian, so bad cuts will show. Please believe me when I say this place is A+++! For this level, I've paid a lot more. Thank goodness I don't have to anymore, now that I'm sticking with Grace at Tomoko Shima Downtown!

Grace is lovely and is advertised as a "long hair specialist". She is very service oriented and wants to learn as much as possible about you so that she can give you something that works for your lifestyle. After the cut, she also gives you practical tips on how to style it yourself at home. There was absolutely no pushiness in getting additional services or purchasing products - just lots of sincerity and friendliness! Some pretty amazing email promotions are offered for those who sign up for their newsletter.

I have been going to Tomoko for my hair needs ever since she opened her salon downtown a few years ago. She is a talented hairstylist and I recommend her without reservation. She listens to her clients needs and is meticulous in her work. Her salon is organized and works efficiently so you don't waste a lot of time hanging around. The downtown salon is very convenient to get to -- just about every train on the west side stops on 14th street at one or the other end of her block. Even from the east side, it is just a brisk walk from Union Sq. Tomoko rocks!

I love the way Shima cut my hair. It is so hard to find someone who knows how to cut my fine, blonde hair, but he did such a beautiful job! Such a reasonable price too. Would definitely recommend :)

I stopped by Tomoko Shima hair salon when I had some time to kill. I went in to check it out, and the place looked great. I thought, "I need a hair cut" and Tomoko was so nice I figured why not? Honestly, it's the best hair cut I have ever gotten. Tomoko is a super talented hair stylist, because lemme tell you, my hair requires real talent to make look like anything, and she did a great job.

I stopped in the downtown location on a whim because the price was so reasonable. Sally cut my hair, and it's the best cut I've ever had -- pure precision! It's also ideal for my face shape. I'm definitely going back.
