Honestly the best salon experience I've had since moving to the Metro Detroit area. My stylist was Briana Honor and she was absolutely wonderful. I went in for a wash, cut, and blow-out and my expectations were surpassed. I made an appointment with the ladies at the front desk to go coral, they made me an appointment for about a week out. I arrived to the appointment today and my stylist had to inform me that Aveda does not currently have a coral dye, the closest would be a bubblegum pink until the end of the year. My student stylist (Ally) and their teacher (Carrie or Carol ?) were very kind and understood that I did not want to go bubblegum pink, especially with my complexion. They gave me two recommendations right around the corner for salons that would carry my desired colors in a great quality. They were wonderful about the whole experience! They are the only reason that it's two stars instead of one. I'm very upset that with three people at the reception counter and no one else in line I was told I would be able to get a product that they do not offer. It was a waste of my time to schedule me and then for me to come in this morning. It's extremely unprofessional and inconsiterate. I'm really disappointed because I gave had great experiences with other Aveda locations before this. It doesn't matter how good the teachers and students are here, if reception cant book an appointment correctly then I wont be coming back.

Words can not even begin to explain how much I loved this place! Everyone with whom I had the pleasure of speaking with was knowledgable and exceptionally nice. Today was my first time here and it's been 3 years since my last hair cut. My girl Ashley did a great job with my raggedy hair and it was wonderful to be able to have an interesting conversation that transcends past small talk. She deserves a special shout out just for being awesome and an absolute sweetheart! Someone else who deserves a shout out is Elena who performed my stress relief treatment and it was amazing! It was great being able to talk with her before she worked her magic. I wish the best to both of you through the rest of your education and in life! The instructors treating their students and clients well was heart warming to witness. The fact that some of the instructors came in personally to acquire my feedback and spoke highly of their students is proof in itself that this is the place you want to be!

I have been coming to Aveda for a while but I've had my first Spa experience this summer and I loved it! I went in for a brazillian and I was pretty nervous (my first time ever getting waxed) but Danielle was amazing! She talked me through everything and made me feel super comfortable during the whole process. Danielle has such a calm and graceful energy that is perfect for any Spa. Every appointment feels custom tailored for what I need in the moment, before I knew I needed it. I leave feeling joyful and energized. She is the perfect balance between being focused on her work but also attentive to her clients. I've never really focused on "self care" or thought it was important till now. Since seeing Danielle, I've been able to feel more comfortable in my own skin and have even stopped wearing foundation! Now I count down the days till my next appointment with her, Thanks so much Danielle!:)

It was a very good facial and she walked me through everything as well as helped me with product suggestions and tips on how to maintain glowing skin at home. I have skin prone to redness and hyperpigmentation. Sharnell was such a sweet girl with a great personality and lots of expertise/talent. I recommend her to anyone looking for a quality facial. I will be visiting with her again!!

Morgan Coles- Facial - 90 minutes. I have never received a facial before and was unsure what to expect. From the beginning Morgan made sure that I was as comfortable as I could be and was so easy to connect with. Step by step- one treatment after another she had knowledge about everything to answer all of my questions. As silly as it may sound, she has a magic way of working her hands that is just so relaxing and calming. Throughout the treatment I learned more than I could have ever expect to learn about my skin and how to take better care of it. I can’t wait to go back again and have another meeting with Morgan. Ask for Morgan Coles and you won’t regret it.

I had an interesting experience here. When I went there 8 years ago or so for a pedicure it was done by a student who was trained in pedicures and needed the teacher to come by and “ grade them “ from time to time. It was relaxing and nice. Recently went there and the student did not know a thing about pedicures and had the teacher yelling at her for not knowing what to do and the teacher did most of pedicure. The fact she did most of pedicure is fine it just needs to be done in more of a relaxing, tactful, and professional manner. The place is also getting a little more run down. Use to feel very spa like and now it’s getting rough around edges. And the bathrooms were filthy. On a different note, the front desk is very friendly, kind, and welcoming. And my daughter was there for a haircut and had a great experience.

I honestly don’t know what I was expecting, but I know I wasn’t expecting what I walked into. The environment/atmosphere itself is very nice, open and inviting. I was greeted as soon as I walked in and I let the person know who I was there to see. I was there to receive a 90 minute facial from Corie Berry, a current student at Aveda. Corie came down to greet me and escorted me upstairs to where the facial would take place. I was expecting to be walked over to a chair for the facial but instead was walked to a private room where I received a foot soak as I was being assessed for my skin needs and concerns. The room reminded me of the environment where I meditate and get Reiki done....calm, relaxing & serene. I could write a book on the entire process and explain step by step how great it was, but I won’t. I will say that my facial was a full on relaxing spa experience. My skin felt so good and smooth when it was over and I felt physically refreshed after the facial. Each concern I had was addressed and products were recommended for my skin care routine (which was seriously lacking). I 100% recommend a facial with Corie at Aveda!! You will not be disappointed! I booked my next facial before I left....that is how great it was.

Everyone was welcoming and friendly from the receptionist to the students to the instructors. I already have my next appointment scheduled :-)

Sabrina washed my hair and blew it dry . She did a great job on my hair and I am really happy with it. She gets 5 starts. However, I feel like the Aveda Institute does not care about the students. An example is that there are no rubber mats on the cement floors for the students to stand on. I can only imagine how they feel. I didn't hear anyone complain but it makes me wonder abou t the Institute. Costco, Sam's and all other salons provide mats for their employees . Why doesn't Aveda Institute do this for their students?

I had one of the best cuts at this salon in Royal Oak for only $ 17, compared to others that I cut for $ 50 and even $ 70 were not good. I am quite disappointed. I scheduled to hydrate my hair, and after I found a coupon on the offer site for the same service including a haircut, however when I called to reschedule they told me that it would not be possible, because I would have to do both services. That is, it makes no sense for you to overpay for just doing one service. P.S.: I decided to go to the salon to try to talk and do the service for the price of the offer site and surprisingly the girl said that I could do.

Tl/dr: Horrific results. Pathetically poor scheduling. Not friendly for minors. Longer version: I've given up. The prices are awesome, but the lack of organization and professionalism makes it not worth it. Here's our last four visits: 1) Highlights & haircut. Me. Waited half hour after my appointment time to be seen. Then, they 'lost' the haircut part of my appointment & only did color. Partial highlights took *three hours* to complete. Instructor had to step in and fix several times throughout. Basic stuff like how to part hair, how to brush on bleach, whoops you forgot the toner. OMG! Set the timer for the heat lamps! Hair was fried. 2). Try again. My daughter (13), who wanted the ends of her hair barely lightened, like sunshine. Came to the salon after swimming, so hair was still damp. They refused to do the work, stating chlorine would interfere with the process. I stated she swam in a salt water pool & had washed her hair afterwards. Nope. No educator on site at the time to make appeal! 3). Daughter came back. Wanted cut & still trying to get ends lightened. Wouldn't allow her to schedule both at same appointment (?!). Fine. Scheduled cut one weekend, color the next. At cut, student washing hair was scraping scalp with claw-length nails, daughter in tears. Teacher had to fix because "trim straight across bottom" was lopsided & at an acute angle. Student burnt daughter's forehead with blow dryer, left mark. Two hours for the trim (had to feed meter twice) 4). Ends lightened, next weekend. Night before, salon cancels appointment because "your student wanted day off." Rescheduled for 7pm, two days later. Salon calls at 5:15 same day to ask if we can come early at 6pm. We forego dinner & arrive at 6pm. Kept waiting until 6:20. Student then announces new policy is that parents are not allowed to watch their child's hair service take place & must remain downstairs in the lobby, two floors below. Front desk phone girl states children should not be at the salon if they are not old enough to be left there unaccompanied. Policy not stated before arrival, nor was it in place the prior weekend. We walked. Save yourself LOTS of aggravation & poor results. Go elsewhere. I get this is a learning salon, am willing to make allowances and I truly hope I’m not a Karen, but this is beyond acceptable. I’m going to leave my minor child alone with untrained strangers for what may be up to three hours after she's previously been clawed & burnt? Yeah, sure. I was stupid to even come back.

I had a 60 minute facial done by Sharnell in the evening class and it was the best facial I have ever had. I've had several facials done at this institute but hers was by far the best. The best part was the foot massage, this was the first time I received a foot massage during a facial and now I want one every time!!! Go see Sharnell before she graduates, you wont regret it!!!

I was surprised when I was told that Sarah Shannon was just launched on the spa floor. Her skills are admirable. As a retired instructor/esthetician I highly recommend her. Definitely will book with her again. The full 90 minute facial was better at Douglas J than others I ‘ve had by already licensed “pros”.

Stefanie Mueller has hands that were gifted to her from Aphrodite herself!!! I recieved my first ever facial from her and I would highly recommend it! I am always very stressed out and never really calm down, but Stefanie makes it her mission to give you the most relaxing experience ever! At some points I could ACTUALLY feel the products working on my skin! My acne scars got lighter and I am GLOWING LIKE A GODDESS!!! I had photos of my own hair cut and styled the way I wanted, but the student slaughtered it. I requested a short haircut, a pixie style, and the girl gave me a haircut that looks like a uneven military haircut. The instructor couldn't even fix it. Their is more hair on the top than there is on the sides. I'm a woman and just wanted a simple trim and my neckline cleaned up. I was at the girl's mercy because I couldn't see what she was doing, I wear glasses. I have the worst haircut of my life, and my neckline wasn't even cleaned up. I have had good haircuts there before, but it depends on the student. They really need to closely supervise their students when they are attempting a cut they haven't done before. I feel hideous, and I was so focused on the bad uneven top, that i didn't even notice the lack of cleaned up neckline until i got home. The girl didn't even put on the cape properly, i had hair clippings all down my back and chest, and she got hair clippings in my eye. She even dripped water in my eyes when she was shampooing my hair. I had a horrible experience there. I feel so ugly and sad. If I had longer hair that was more forgiving it might have been better, but don't bother getting short haircuts here unless you know the student. I've had three fantastic haircuts from one specific student here, but whenever I get someone else I get an uneven mess of a haircut. This has happened twice. The first time it was so uneven I had to go to another salon to get it fixed, and this time it is too short to even get it fixed. I'm never going there again. I just want a cute short haircut, not some uneven hot mess.

I came in for a clean up on a short cut. It didn’t come out exactly as I had hoped, but I go here with the understanding that I am helping someone learn. The beauty of short hair is that it grows back quickly ;) The student Becca was a little bit unprofessional in the subject matter she spoke about to a fellow student while she was cutting, but that kind of thing is something I think she’ll learn with time. She was great about getting feedback from her instructor when she was unsure about the fade, and also asked a more experienced student for help texturing. (Brian did a great job with it!) I appreciate the level of care and oversight the instructors provide, and I will definitely come back again!

I have been coming here for a massage followed by a shampoo and style for more than five years. Yes, you heard that right. I have noticed a decline in management except for the male teacher for the hair students and one of the female teachers with red hair for the spa students. This is the second time they have botched my appointment. The scheduling people are mindless. The first time was in person and I was able to correct it. The second time I had no idea the person I spoke with booked my hair appointment first and my massage (you know with oils including scalp massage) after my shampoo and style. When I arrived tonight and the student discovered the problem, the front desk couldn't do anything about it. I have been coming to this location SINCE IT OPENED. They offered to comp my services but I couldn't have a hair appointment as planned. When I called to speak to the manager I was told I had spoken to the manager at the front desk. Oh, great! The woman who could have cared less that my appointment was botched and didn't bother to even try to go out of her way to make it right. So much for being a loyal customer.

I came in to have a facial with Erica Broadnax this past weekend and she was absolutely divine. She made the treatment an entire experience! She was very perceptive of my skin and its concerns and tailored the service specifically to me. I was calm and relaxed from the second I walked in and walked out feeling rejuvenated in more than just my face. She used such perfect pressure when applying everything that I forgot that it was more than a face message. I will be returning to her again and again!

Anna P cut my hair - a bit shorter than I wanted but it’s fine. I think she was rushed to finish so she could style her friend’s hair before their next clients. The last two times I had a cut here, I’ve been disappointed by the overall service/feel of the salon. Both times, my stylist failed to do a scalp and shoulder massage - a big part of why I go here. It also seems like the students who don’t have clients used to do simple hand massages or practice on heads - now they sit in their chairs in their phones looking bored or talk to the students styling hair.

After 7 hours total (4.5 hours for highlights one day and 2.5 hours the next day for a color correction ) my hair is darker then when I even came in, the exact opposite of what I wanted. They bumped my original appointment for highlights from 5 to 5:30, I was there till they closed at 10. It took so long I had to forfeit the haircut I wanted and leave the salon with soaking wet hair because it was already clear by 10 the stylists and staff were ready to leave. It wasn’t until morning I realized my hair was a yellow and orange brassy disaster. I was able to get a color correction the next day which Jasmine did a good job toning and blow drying my hair, but I am incredibly disappointed in how dark my hair is now. I regret ever coming here to begin with. I partially blame myself for trusting highlights to be done by students still learning. Regardless I’ve never hated my hair more then I do now after this experience.

I loved the service from Jailyn Bailey. She did a great job on the pedicure and was very personable. I felt the pedicuare were very outdated because there was not plumbing/a water line. The students had to fill up large silver bowls and carry them over to where the customers in order to soak our feet. Updated chairs with a water line/plumbing would be a great upgrade!

I had the Haircut and Botanical Treatment services at the Royal Oak location. I originally scheduled the services with Anna P. However, after waiting 1/2 hour past my appointment time, Sam came and performed the services due to Anna P. was still busy with her customer before me. Sam was nice. My haircut was good and the botanical hair treatment was quick and fine. However, I was disappointed as I was not offer any water and I did not get the scalp, shoulder and hand massage rituals. Both of my services took total of around 30 minutes to complete...so I felt 'rushed' and not the "spa like" experience that I was looking forward to. Update: I did reach out to Stephanie regarding the above. She was very professional, pleasant and remedy this for me. Thank you.

The instructor and the student were great and the session was VERY fast (lower leg wax). I will say that the wax they used was the most painful wax I've ever had but it got the little baby hairs too so I'd say it's worth it. The price point is a little higher than L'esprit but is still a great value. The only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars is because the student was late for my appointment which is especially discourteous in a city where you have to park at a meter and could get a ticket. She was very nice and professional otherwise.

Today was my first time at Douglas J Aveda Institute in Royal Oak. I went in for highlights. I was very nervous about the color on my medium brown hair, because even though I've been contemplating going lighter for a long time, my last couple times with highlights were not great. I read the reviews online and Briana Honor had a great review for doing color, so I scheduled my appointment with her. I was nervous going in because I didn't know what to expect, but the review I read did give me hope. I was not disappointed. From the moment she greeted me, Briana was very courteous and professional. She started with a consultation making sure she understood what I wanted and also taking into account what was possible with my hair color and the fact that I had previously colored it with box dye. She consulted with her educator Joe who was also very helpful and knowledgeable and we decided on baby highlights with a toner to get rid of the brass. Baby highlights as I learned are very fine highlights which create a more blended and natural look. Joe came over often to check on the progress and give tips, and Briana worked confidently and at a good pace. The result came out beautiful. It did in fact came out looking very natural and blended and I am extremely happy with the results. This is probably the best hair lightening experience I've had at any salon and I will definitely be back!

Alia provided a very relaxing facial and she will pamper you from the first moment you meet her. A foot massage, shoulder massage and facial in a heavenly 90 minutes. She was awesome, kind, friendly, caring and she loves what she does to help others feel good and look good..I wish I could give 10 stars. You will not be disappointed .

This is my second week coming for a facial with Rachel. She is wonderful. My skin has never looked better I find all my skincare is far more effective after seeing her. Highly recommend!!! Also had a fantastic wash/blowout with Z’hia. She noticed my hair was dry/brittle and recommended the botanical treatment. When she was finished my hair looked and felt healthy. She was very personable and professional! Highly recommend seeing her.

Several week ago I used a % off coupon to have highlights done. Although Sabrina (student stylist) did a fabulous job, it didn't come out as I had hoped. Aveda offered to redo it in a couple of weeks for free. I was very impressed they were that concerned about my happiness! Sabrina redid the highlights today and it is exactly as I had hoped it would be! Working with the staff, and especially Sabrina, is a joy. She is knowledgeable, understood exactly what i wanted, thorough, talked me through step by step, friendly, personable and even went outside to put more money in the parking meter - that is service plus!!!!! I am really delighted working with Sabrina and will make another appointment with her. Thank you Sabrina, and thank you Aveda staff! Well done!

Douglas J is great for budget color - I am always happy with what I get for the price. Be prepared to spend a good chunk of your day there - the students definitely take their time to get it right. The curriculum is severely lacking for curly hair though. I don't even bother asking them to diffuse it anymore, because it always looks like a rats nest once it's done. Better to let them blow dry it straight and fix it later.

Anna Petty was pretty awesome. I walked in wanting a simple cut, but I left wanting additional treatments. She helped me explore the different color options which is typically complicated for my black hair, and it was a fun experience. She's professional but also personable, and I appreciate that she was a perfectionist because my hair is not something I want to get messed with. She also used a combination of products that left my hair looking new & improved. I would 10/10 recommend her

My elderly mother likes to get her hair done at Douglas J in Royal Oak but gets a different person every time. Sometimes they obviously don’t make too much of an effort on her little 88 year old head. Today she had a stylist named Lauren Wroe who did a beautiful job. She obviously wanted to give my mom the best look possible and I can honestly say it’s the best cut and styling she’s ever gotten here. Some of the other stylists have deserved 2 or 3 star, but for Lauren Wroe I’m giving 5.

Stefanie in the nighttime class is phenomenal! I haven’t had a facial in years and the 90 minutes spent in the spa with her made my entire week! I had my first spa treatment at Aveda and saw Margaret C. for a 90 min facial. After switching jobs and dealing with the loss of my father, I was totally spent and needed to find a way to take care of me again. She was wonderful, very good energy, sweet person, attentive, gentle touch and recommended the perfect products my skin desperately needed. I felt so relaxed, at peace and my skin is totally rejuvenated with the hydration it needed. The room was clean, calm and the instructor was such a kind person, she and Margaret explained why the products they chose were the right fit for my skin without “selling”. Being in sales for 15 years plus I can say that I really appreciated that. The instructor was knowledgeable and delivered her message with kindness and experience. Margaret - I think you’ve found your calling, for the many women who need 60-90 min everywhere of me time and to feel beautiful again, they will find that solace in the time they spend with you. My stylist was Lakieyah, and she was amazing! She was so sweet and gentle with my hair. I originally requested a blowout, but due to the thickness and coarseness of my hair, it did not work. So, she used a curling iron instead and finished curling my whole head of hair within 20 minutes. Definitely recommend Lakieyah for your hair services!
