I have always come to the school for my hair needs. Been coloring hair by them and it’s always a good experience (new owner). So the school is under new ownership! Give it another chance- so much has changed!
If I could give 0 stars I would. I went in to get my roots done. They changed the plan on me to even up the color. Long story short my hair got so burned off that I now have to spray my hair down until it grows back. I ended up having to dye my hair back to my natural color because I was too scared to put any more bleach in it. They tried blaming me because I had done my hair at home for years and years. I never had this problem doing it myself. They burned my hair off at the new growth after having bleach on it for 3 hours!!! If you want your hair done correctly and not ruined then go to a professional. Definitely not worth the $130 they charged me and refused to refund!!!! Worst. Place. Ever!!!!!
Literally turned my girlfriends hair blue. She was there literally all day. Instead of someone trying to help they tried telling her how good it looks because they wanted to close and go home. No offer to come back at later date or an apology for the disaster of turning her hair blue. Don't waste your time or money here.
Lively atmosphere and excellent service!
Friendly staff and great service. I recommend this place for clients and students and will be back for services for myself as well as my children.
Love coming here! They do such a nice job and I'm always satisfied with my hair when I leave. I always recommend to my friends that they come here.
Amazing school, highly recommend it. The staff are great and the culture of Paul Mitchell is really great.
Great haircuts, great price! I moved to NH three years ago from out of state but continued traveling home to get my hair cut at a trusted salon. Until this year, when I discovered the school, and I travel no longer! I have wavy hair that I like to switch up between short and medium length, with a low-maintenance, layered cut that encourages my natural wave. I like a cute cut, but also pretty, and somewhere between modern and classic. It can be difficult to cut properly because of its wave and thickness, nor do I always like the style that some stylists have cut it in before. So when I saw a friend with a similar hair type rocking an AMAZING new cut, and she told me it was from a student at The School, I was convinced to give them a try. I loved the haircut I got from the student (Rachel Starr Davis), and made sure to go back for another one before she graduated, which also turned out perfect. I'm not surprised that she has already landed a great job for after graduation - she's clearly very talented. She recommended a newer student for my next appointment, so I absolutely plan on coming back. It's insane that these great cuts are only $11, because they are the same or better than $35-$45 cuts I've gotten at much fancier salons. Plus you get the whole treatment, with washing and a blow out and everything. These students are very professional, and they check with their knowledgeable teachers every step of the way - with a haircutting plan at the beginning, and with the final result at the end, as well as during the process if they have any questions or need a little advice. I always feel confident in being treated well there and having a great result. I'm never going anywhere else! Sometimes cuts take more than an hour, these are students after all so they occasionally trade speed for accuracy, so beware when you schedule that you don't need to rush off to an urgent appointment right after.
Always super friendly and communicative. Been getting hair cuts since I moved to the area and today am in for my first color!
Always a great experience! Super friendly and knowledgeable students and staff
I have been coming here for over a year and it's the best cut in town and the best price for sure. So glad I found it! A very happy customer.
I've spent tons of money at top end salons but came out completely disappointed. I don't know how this school does it, but whatever they're doing,,they need to keep doing it. The stylists are clearly well trained, professional, great listeners and special. I walked out of my appointment glowing. Highly recommend the services and this school.
I went to the school on 22 March for a hair color and ended up with a black hair (my hair was light-dark reddish brown before) and my total cost for that day was $68 including tip. I went back on 29 March to "CORRECT" the color and my total cost for that day was $241 including tip. The guy at the register basically said that this is "the chance I take for coming to the school." I did have an $18 hair treatment and a $15 facial that was included in the $241 bill but I think that I should NOT have been charged to correct the color and my bill should have been at last $60 less. In short, if you think that the school is "cheaper" think again because you may have to have something done two or three times before they get it right ....
I have been going to The Paul Mitchel School in Portsmouth for the past 2 years now. They have proven to be better than an established salon that charges double or triple the price. The staff is friendly, I have never had any mistakes made except for maybe something minor and they always strive to correct any errors to keep their clients happy. They are all good students and know what they are doing. Its worth the visit and it will keep you coming back based off their preformance.
This place carries high quality product line es and there are always multiple teachers on the floor to ensure the work or any chemical formulations are done with accuracy. You can get first quality services for a bargain plus you're helping students learn and hone their technique.
I got the most awesome balayage-- highly recommend The Paul Mitchell School!
I came here looking for an affordable, decent haircut I left here with a stunning haircut and my day and spirits unexpectedly uplifted by some of the awesomest future "hair therapists." In all, I met three gals, "Moriah" my main girl (who can light up a room with her dimpled smile) and her fellow classmate -- an adorable curly-haired blonde young lady, along with their teacher. I came looking for a drastic change late into the afternoon when most of us are looking forward to go home. We learned alot about each other through friendly dialogue and somewhere along the line, these girls felt like family. They could have rushed me through, but instead they took extra care of me, gave me a high end haircut with heartwarming hospitality that I will not soon forget. I am grateful for the opportunity to have met some of the girls at this downtown Portsmouth school; they are going to go on to do what we are all in search of everyday -- to make us feel better about ourselves when we needed it the most. Thank you to the gals of Paul Mitchell school of Portsmouth!
A fantastic experience. Was very happy with the work Julia did along with the guidance of Linda. 100% the best haircut I've ever received. Julia should be proud!! If you want to offer your hair up for practice or just want a new do, then please stop by here. Top tier students and staff.
Ashley has been so great! I came in this morning to get my hair did before a wedding& she's been fantastic! She's fast & thorough and just an all around awesome person. She's going to do great things. Also everyone has been great & glad they got me in at short notice. Thank you Paul Mitchell school! Second time and I'll definitely return <3
Absolutely Amazing Experience.....
I absolutely love this place. It's the only place I go to get my hair done. I recommend it to everyone!!!
If I could give you 0 stars I would. Disgustingly dirty. Staff was a nightmare. Students look to be abused by the staff. Absolutely disgusted.
I was greeted with smiles from the front end Staff as I walked off the elevator. My stylist today is Nicole and she is wonderful. She's a great stylist! If you need to go to a salon come here and ask to have Nicole as your stylist. You wont be disappointed.
I am so sorry to offer such a lousy experience. Not only did the stylist say nothing...she was beyond nervous. 90 minutes of torture. I'm really not sure why someone would consider getting a cut here? If it was free, and they were HONEST with the facts that the students are not confident. Worst $12 spent.
I've been here a couple times and both have been good! Prepare to spend longer than you would at a regular salon, but the future professionals do a great job (and are checked by a licensed person).
I love the environment they have in the school. I am a student here, I've been going here since November 2013. I love all of the staff members, they are super nice and super friendly. All the students here are so talented and do an amazing job! They always make sure that the client is happy with their hair no matter what! If you are nervous about coming here because we are a school, you shouldn't be! You are in good hands and you wont pay an arm and a leg, the prices are very reasonable. So come on in (:
Great experience. Kiely did a great job on my color!
I have been here a few times and have gotten decent service for the price. I will not be going back and I do not recommend going after my last visit. I asked for a trim and told the stylist that I have gotten a cut here before and that they chopped off more hair than I asked. She told me not worry they are just doing a slight trim. The student was watching as the teacher cut my hair. She ended up cutting way too much off and it came out uneven, which she did not notice until I pointed it out. She corrected it and it is now even but a lot shorter than I asked for. I was very disappointed with the end result and would rather spend the few extra dollars for a more professional service.
Linda is one of the most interesting, articulate, knowledgeable intructors! She really knows the anatomy of the skull and how this effects hair and the way hair growth patterns are effected by headshape. She kindly guides my styleist Emily on what strategy to use with my hair. Emily does an amazing job and shows real promise for her future in this business! I love getting my hair cut at this school!
I have been coming here for the past 4 months and it's been a great experience. Great environment and great professionals to be. I love my girl Rachel Starr, who soon will be graduating. PM products are really good and the services are very affordable. Definitely recommend!
Great training for students. Get the right student and stick with it, love my girl. Supervision is adequate and PM products are worth it. Been a client many years and huge improvement when PM took over.
I came here on the recommendation of a friend to ombré dye my dark brown hair to pastel pink, and while I'm glad I did I definitely got what I paid for. My stylist was a delight to work with (very important when you're in the chair for over four hours), and everyone was great about answering all my questions on how to maintain my new do, but the quality wasn't the best. The bleach job was inconsistent, leaving a light brown streak running through the pink on the right front side (super visible, ugh), and she managed to bleach above the point I wanted in several spots. I also wish I hadn't let them talk me into going full hot pink with the idea that it would fade to pastel. I knew I needed to go more vivid for it to work properly, but I wouldn't go so far in the future. After living with it for a few months it's faded unevenly, so there's still hot pink in back and underneath, even with attempts to wash just that section and speed up the process. Tl:dr I'm glad I came here to finally take the plunge on a crazy dye job without paying salon prices, but I'm not jazzed about the quality. I'm not totally sure if I would do this again.
I had 2 great students! The moment I walked through the door, I was greeted by my hair dresser. They did a fabulous drop washing, blow drying, and flat ironing my hair. I have long, thick, curly hair and they were gentle combing it out and took their time getting it silky smooth. I hope I have enough time to squeeze in a facial or manicure! Thank you for a professional, quality & relaxing experience!
Paul Mitchell The School has been my go-to salon for two-three years and they never disappoint! Educated young professionals with fantastic guidance and leaders to learn from! Always a positive experience here.
