Very little common sense and poor customer service. Some of the employees are very nice but some have a hard time with common sense. Again though they are just kids.

Kerem Cantekin

Nice swimming pool, but the time period, at which it is open is terrible.

Nate Smith

Here's why I rated it 2/5: Pool: variable hours so you have to plan any swimming in advance or find yourself surprised that it's not open. Free weights: not a lot of empty space makes it feel even more crowded. Plenty of benches, but squat racks can be overcrowded and unavailable. Convenience: unless you have a Utah Campus parking pass expect to use public transportation because there is no parking for the gym other than surrounding school lots. Even with a parking pass the parking lots can be crowded during busy hours so good luck finding a spot. Also, don't forget your ID card because they will not look you up, you must purchase a guest pass for $6.00 that can be reimbursed only within 48 hours. If you don't show your card in that time frame you will not get your reimbursement. Cardio: the track upstairs is gimmicky with 8 90-degree angle turns to wrestle through as you complete 1/5.5 of a mile per lap. Really annoying for anyone serious about running. Plenty of machines though. As mentioned above, there is not a lot of empty space but there is a bit of unused space on the west side of the gym with random lounge chairs and tables that are mostly useless. The courts are pretty cool if you're into pickup games. Full disclosure I never use them so I can't really tell much about them.

Best gym you could go to. Beats any other gym I've been to in Utah, second only to Lifetime Fitness. Just about any kind of exercise equipment you could think of is available. Olympic length pool, locker rooms, hot tub, rock wall, racquetball, heavy bags, indoor track, full length basketball courts, health café as well as your standard weights and cardio machines are all available to use. Theres also a center for outdoor equipment rentals that is very under appreciated.

The University has managed to suck all the joy out of working out. The draconian rules, Arbitrary enforcement, and discriminatory practices make this place incredibly frustrating to visit. And as students, what other options are there? Employees can circle to find any infraction. No tank tops, but also no sweatshirts if you're not wearing them. No bumper plates but no using other weights as risers. Don't drop your weight, but no they will not purchase a platform for deadlifts. They also actively discriminate against women by refusing to purchase or allow fractional weights. I guess they expect people can go up in 5lb. Increments ? Echoing the sentiment of another poster, this gym feels like it's run by people who have no interest in fitness. I would recommend anyone go elsewhere, except students don't have the time or money to do so. People complain about things but nothing changes, and they won't change because they don't have to. Of all things I think this is the most offensive for all the lip service we're paid about how important students are to the university. Act like it and listen.

Every time i come to workout at the U of U Student Life Center there is always a problem with either my membership, what im wearing, the fact my significant other isnt with me while i want to work out, etc. This time i accidently left my significant other card on one of the cardio machines but when i realized i left it there and went back to get it they didnt have it in their lost & found and the kid working the front desk told me to check back in a day or two. Ok, so a couple days later i come in to check the lost & found for my card and work out but they still didnt have it so i had to pay the $6 to use the facility. After i paid the $6 i go check the machine i was using ro see if my card was still there and of course its not. When i return a couple days later and since my card hasnt been turned in i am forced to buy a new one which is $10 bucks. Both employees at the front desk told me if i buy the new card and they would refund my $6. Im thinking oh thats awesome BUT after i pay the $10 they cannot find my name on their yellow sign in paper so they do not refund my $6. So i just lost $16 and a lame little piece of plastic that in reality only costs $.50. It legit feels like they dont even care and that they just stole my money from me. I guess i should have expected that to happen since the U is really good at taking money from people.

Don't listen to the whiny 1-star reviews, those are all dealing with minor issues. Yeah, hours could be better. But so what? This place rocks. It has literally anything you could want. I have been to many university gyms, and the U's is fantastic. A huge open workout room, an indoor track, plenty of cardio machines, a climbing wall, an indoor lap pool, an outside chill pool, an insane amount of sports court space, awesome views, and a great little cafe. If you are giving this place 1-star reviews, you are really reaching on this one.

Ashley Martinez

I enjoyed my time there///

Jason D. Black

Pretty good.

Sam Francis

Rented some cross country skis. Good service and nice price. Gear was great condition.

The rules and policies at this gym make me not want to workout here. They put regulations on the clothes you can wear and the ways you can use the weights, while not offering top quality amenities (specific to the weight room). I was asked to leave one day because of the tank top I was wearing. They won't let us use weight plates as bumpers to elevate the weight further off the floor for deadlifts; but they don't offer regular Olympic round plates either. And don't dare set down and weights on a bench. I genuinely want to go to a different gym, but for the price I pay for tuition I expect the University's gym to meet my expectations. Unless you're a student, don't pay to go here. EDIT: I have now been kicked out twice for the type of tank top that I've worn to this gym. My problem isn't with the dress policy as much as it is with the enforcement. In both scenarios where I have been asked to leave, I had worn the clothing in question multiple times previously. Thanks University of Utah for making getting in shape such an enjoyable experience /s.

Charlotte Kelley

I agree with some other comments on here. The facility itself is generally pretty nice. The rules, however, are completely asinine. Most recently I watched the staff tell multiple people within minute to remove plates and dumbbells from the benches as it "might ruin the upholstery." So you probably don't want people sitting on them either then? The rules seem to have been created and instituted by people who don't really understand how gyms work. It can be frustrating.

Trenton Hammond

Free weights section is really cramped. Opening hours are too late. You have to pay to park there.

Dallin Romney

One of the best comprehensive life activities facilities I've ever attended or even heard of.

Ash alm

A bit small for a university gym and the hours are too short ..

John Parra-Álvarez

Bad costumer service. The administration seems to be more concerned about profit than students needs. The lack of adequation for lifting (deadlift station, padded flooring) makes lifting actually unsafe. For a facility that big, it's unacceptable to have only one bathroom in the same floor as the weights/machine area. Making students and staff pay for a day pass for forgetting their ID, instead of looking them up in the data base is very inconvenient and honestly ridiculous. Performing variations of exercises (Hip thrust) in certain machines is called out by the staff as unsafe, when in reality the exercises are recommended by specialists in the fitness community. The facility they had at the Field House is closer to the concept of a gym than this pretty building they are trying to sell us as the new gym

Thomas Carter

Before I provide more detail, I have to say that my rating is primarily geared for those who would like to use this rec center for athletic training. There are parts of this gym which are quite nice and useful for other purposes which I detail below. Pros: Lap Pool is quite nice, seems to accommodate demand nicely. Bouldering/climbing is good. It's not stellar, but they have it and consistently change it around to prevent it from going stale. Racquetball exists. For the elderly or those recovering from an injury, they have an array of resistance machines and cardio equipment that comes close to the selection of most physical therapy places I've been to. Dumbbells: They have them up to 100lbs (not much floor space to use them though) For students, staff, and faculty, it's hard to beat the convenience (location, not time). I have not personally taken any of the group classes, but I've heard good things from my friends who have. Seems nice? All I can say is they exist. Courts: They exist and accommodate demand Cons: Hours of operation. Just look at when they are open and you'll see. While the building (the physical structure) is quite nice, the layout is absolutely nonsensical. They have absolutely no floor space. There is a ~12ft x 15ft area that is filled with immovable mats. This area is always super crowded. To make it even more crowded, that area only has about 5 square of free floor space and is the only area where you are allowed to use their half set of kettle bells, boxes, and exercise balls. They actually have a ton of floor space on the upper floor, but you aren't allowed to bring any equipment up there. It's just a waste of space. The indoor track is useless. It's a short track (~350ft I think) and it has something on the end 5 90 degree turns in it. So you can forget about sprints/intervals, and even a moderate 7-8min pace will have you braking every 15 strides. Kettle bells, they only have a half set, and there's no space to use them. Power lifting: You can do bench and squatting fine (they have a decent number of benches and squat racks actually). Finding floor space for dead lifts can be rough. They also have no platforms and bumper plates. If you want to go heavy, you'll get yelled at (they don't like noise, or work). Gymnastics: No equipment. Olympic lifting: No equipment. Plyometrics: only three boxes (some extra on the second level). Floor space is hella limited though. Calisthenics: This is the floor space where I would do calisthenics, IF THERE WAS ANY Rules: Dear gods. I alluded to this before. I have never been to an establishment that is so intentionally unaccommodating. The biggest one is you can't move any equipment. So the little that is here, they make as unusable as possible. No noise; no grunting; no clinking. You will be told to hush it up, usually in a rude and condescending manner. I was actually once told that you cannot slam slamballs. What are you supposed to do with the SLAMballs here? Scientists are still researching the question; nothing conclusive yet. No chalk; this is a typical rule for a physical therapy style place but its still unnecessary and annoying. No liquid chalk? What the hell? Price: If you aren't affiliated with the U, it is outrageous. They do not have the facilities to charge what they do. Overall: In my mind, a good rec center caters to as many interests as possible with making as few sacrifices as possible. This place made an attempt with the lap pool, racquet ball courts, and climbing area. With regards to everything else, I don't think any attempt was made. I would say for those uninterested in working out and just want to boulder/swim/get on a treadmill for a bit, it ain't bad. I think it is especially accommodating for the elderly and injured. All in all. I really hate this place. The people designing/running it obviously have no experience in athletics. How did they get jobs in this field? Maybe they could use their skills more appropriately and run a dump instead. Though that also requires planning and space management...

Caity Witucki

Has a lot of activities to try here: basket ball courts, a couple pools, a climbing wall, machines, ect. Classes are generally pretty cheap, but they do cost extra. The only reason I am giving it 4/5 stars is because their hours are generally inconvenient and when they are open, they are usually very busy.

Alexandria Wells

Clean, fun, and a lot of options! I also love their new eatery.

Anuraag Verma

Inconsistent enforcement of policies, horrible experience.

Chenge Zhang

Love it. Very clean. All kinds of activities. Swimming pool. Climbing wall and everything you would wish

Ryan Kang

A Place for Comfort and Good Exercise

A N M TAUFIQ ELAHI

Good place for exercise and indoor sports

mehdi jabbarzadeh

nice gym beginners, but it is not recommended for advance activities and weight lifting.

Cole Avery

Employees are extremely unhelpful. I was asking for a refund for rented camping gear and overheard them making rude and profane comments about my request while they asked me to hold.

Vaiva Kulbokaite

A really great place to do some sports or just relax in Jacuzzi :)

Daniel Bae

Best gym ever. Has pretty much everything and clean.

Chris Fuentes

Their dress code policy is ridiculous.

Anindita Roy

They have a wide range of machines for cardio and strength building exercises, both indoor and outdoor pools, Jacuzzi, courts for badminton, squash, basketball, etc. They also have massage services, dedicated fitness personnel, and several fitness classes that run through the semester. UofU students registered for a semester are automatically members. And it's on campus so you can go between classes or work.

Ryan Nielsen

Best gym in utah!

Gus Wheeler

Great facility, but PLEASE don't rest on the machines between sets. Let others work in.

Sam Porter

The facility is pretty good nothing spectacular not horrible you can get a good workout if you want. Basketball courts are usually full during busy hours or occasionally all taken up by badminton which is weird sometimes. but the thing that brings the rating down are the hours and the cost. As a full-time student I don't have a lot of extra money to spare. I'm assuming most people using this facility are in a similar situation as I am. The fact that it cost any money to rent a basketball is absurd. They should just take our ucards and give us the ball. Also having to buy an extension for the summer is absurd as well. $14,000 a year apparently isn't enough to cover summer usage of the Life Center. The hours are just bad. Closing that early gives me an hour and a half after work to get to the gym and workout before they start closing up. Most gyms are open at least an hour later if not longer. At most other gyms I feel like a patron at the Life Center I feel like a burden. THIS PLACE DOES NOT WANT TO BE OPEN. Their hours suck. Such a waste of space. Who closes at 6 on a Saturday?

Lani Gailey

Very silly dress code rules for a *gym* Reasoning is based on “superbugs” and cleanliness, but when a gym is opened, it’s the owners/staffs job to keep it clean. That’s part of the upkeep of a gym, people sweat at a gym, it’s a very normal thing. Anywhere else, it is not an issue, feels like I’m at BYU. Decently good climbing gym, however, the person that designed it is obviously not a climber. There’s less than 5 feet between bouldering and top rope belaying. It’s super dangerous and I see belayers lowering their climbers onto people/people walking under people being lowered all of the time. Poorly designed, but the route setting is quite decent.

LJaH

Beautiful facility of a beautiful school. Its one of many reasons to go to the U.

Colby Fronk

Besides the daily fee to use the lockers, this place is great

Jacqueline Ohayon

Packed. Unfriendly employees. Limited weight selection for the massive area they have they could improve by expanding these options for those who enjoy weight training. Also, hours aren't ideal for campus students or their families. Improvements can be made in these areas.

Zack Huston

Little crowded but a great facility.

Kenzie Lueck

Great. Gave me a warning for having a “revealing tank top”. I don’t understand the problem when I’ve seen multiple males there shirtless, other females with more revealing tops, and the crimson lagoon doesn’t have a dress code. Great facility though!

Brennan Rubie

Big facility with lots of options. Can be crowded, and staffed by frustrated students

Logan Simmons

Tons to do there, from racquetball to rock climbing

J Y

Few quirky complaints here and there. My main one is the water pressure in the water fountains. Nothing peeves me more than a water fountain that spits out like a pubescent boy. Restrooms are too small to properly facilitate a gym that can hold over 200 people. They are also rarely cleaned and no paper towels (these are a must at a gym for cuts and bloody noses etc.). My next big complaint is sharing the basketball gym for non-basketball related activities such as: volleyball, badminton, and intramurals. I don't mind the cramped work out spaces, but these are my complaints.

Garrett Jay Christian

Gets very crowded and there's not quite enough space in the main area for all the equipment.

Sourangsu Banerji

Nice ambience and crowd

Luke Thomas

Absolutely horrible.... If your not a student.

Moira Gray

The facility is very clean and well maintained. The staff is nice, and very helpful. There are many amenities such as two pools, workout machines, and outdoor recreation rental. If you're a U student, totally take advantage of this!

Jake Fawson

Most well equipped gym I've ever even heard of. Not only is there all the workout equipment you can think of, but there's an area to get food, 5 basketball courts, Olympic sized swimming pool, and lastly you can rent outdoors equipment like ski equipment for quite a while.

Paul Ricketts

Mostly good. Some of their policies are mega stupid and counterproductive. They have a decent amount of equipment but they need to do a better job at cleaning their locker rooms.

Adam Griffee

Amazing asset for students

Adam Rosenberg

Amazing work out facility for students at the U. Not pay to park if you already have a parking pass (which you most likely do) and trax stops pretty close to it. Not too busy in the morning or late in the day can get busy during mid day hours which is expected. Lots of machines, benches, track, pool, climbing wall. Very clean and professional. Easy storage even if you don't have a locker.

Jake Allison

As a U of U student, I love working out here. Huge improvement over the field house, lots of machines, great facilities and always clean! It can get busy at night, and the hours kinda suck, but if you get there early enough you shouldn't have any problems.

Tyler Page

Closes at 9pm on Friday. Closes at 7, yes, 7pm on Sunday! These hours are ridiculous! The students pay gym fees for this?! Many other university gyms are open until 11pm every day. Im sure there are students who need money and would be willing to work those hours. Is the university really that stingy?

Parker Tipton

The hours and facility policies are complete trash. The fact that I'm a student and if I forget to bring my U-ID I have to pay to get in even when they have me on file is outrageous. It is just another way for them to bleed me of money even more. Also, it is constantly closed and the hours are incredibly inconvenient. Especially in the summer time when it is only open from 7am-6pm. Many of us have jobs all day and it isn't even open long enough to go workout after our jobs. Trash.

OCDC Art & Design - Paint with Christie & Daniela

Love all this gym and rec center have to offer for indoor and outdoor activities for students!!!

Jack Porter

If you're a student at the U you should really take advantage of the new facility. It has really great equipment and cheap rentals at the outdoor recreation shop.

James Newman

Top notch. Has a 50 meter pool, multiple full courts, small squash courts, a full assortment of weights, cardio and strength machines including but not limited to treadmills, an indoor track, and lots more. There is one major disadvantage: parking is a nightmare. You need a pass or will have to pay through the nose on the meter. Parking passes are expensive and the gym is too. Better if you are a student here and can use the gym free and come using the trax system that has a station only a minute walk away.

Israel N

There is only one bathroom on the weights floor. This bathroom has automatic faucets which don't last long to wash my hands. It would have made more sense to have a dressing room next to the weights. It is also annoying having to go from one far end of the building to get dressed. For this summer, I paid over $70 for not taking summer classes. The hours of operation are ridiculous as they close at 8 pm on weekdays and they seem to close on many holidays too. Parking is a pain even for those of us who have a U permit. It gets too crowded. I also feel there should be a shuttle stop for those of us having to walk long distances as well. So overall, expect to spend 15 minutes to park, get dressed, walk over to the weights area and another 15 minutes to get dressed and get to your car. The Field House was old but it was much more efficient than this luxurious gym resort the U is trying to sell us.

Jared K

It’s awesome when you come Early in the morning when it’s empty. Evening is way to many people.

Danny Powell

I like this gym because they have lots of amenities in a very small area. Membership gives you access to a climbing gym, an Olympic lap pool, casual swimming area, basketball/volleyball/intramural sport courts, weights, cardio equipment, a track, and punching bags. However, I must admit that I still miss the old field house. The indoor track isn't conducive to running (it's shaped like a figure 8 that doesn't cross in the middle; way too many 90 degree turns...who wants that), but the rest is pretty great. You probably come here for free, but as a grad student you have to sometimes pay a reduced price in the summer (worth it), and if you're not a student it's full price (in which case I'd find another gym. The Front climbing gym has almost all of that plus extras for cheaper).

Michelle Trapp

Never enough cubbies.

Brendan Johnston

Clean, pretty nice equipment. My biggest complaints is it always seems crowded. The weight room is the most used area and the big private rooms in the back hardly ever seem used. I wish there was more space for machines, because it feels like you have to wait in line to workout. Also, 11pm closing time seems better than it being 10. Some people can only come late, and it kind of hinders your workout having to leave your workout if you ran late.

Alex Hyer

This place is very nice and has numerous services. It can get quite cramped during the school year and some of the guest policies are quite strict. Overall, this gym is very clean and aesthetically pleasing.

Christina Hancock

My daughter plays

Richard Surber

Best facility in the state! 50M indoor pool is always clean is the clincher for me.

Bennett Bradley

Nothing makes me more furious than when I am repping out with my boys on a Friday afternoon and a worker tries to tell me that my triple depth cutoff is too low and that I have to change because it could "spread disease"...? If I can't see EVERY fiber of EVERY muscle that I am making swole af then there is no point of even trying. And newsflash to every worker and manager in this facility, this is a college campus, disease runs through this place like the River Nile so that is NO reason to interrupt my concentration curls

Brandon Forsyth

Function follows form. This is a sculpturesque building and you can tell no effort was spared in making it look modern and beautiful. However, that seems like the only design goal. The building is very poorly laid out with tons of wasted space for cavernous hallways that are almost always empty (except when locker sign ups are going, more on that later). The area for the weights and cardio machines seems large but in practice it feels crowded with very few people because there isn't much open floor space. If you just want to do circuit training on the machines or run on a treadmill it is probably fine but if you like to vary your workout or mix a few lifts it is difficult to find space. If you like to run on a track rather than a treadmill you are sure to be disappointed. Who thought that having 6 sharp 90 degree turns on a track and only three lanes was a good idea? You are risking serious knee and ankle injuries if you run at anything faster than an 8 minute per mile pace on the track. Also the number of laps per mile is some mixed decimal that shows no thought was put into its length. You will have lots of space on the track though because most people seem to hate it and avoid using it. The management seems actively hostile to their patrons and their workout goals. They are draconianly restrictive on workout attire. They use silly excuses like "superbugs" to justify their policy of not allowing tank tops with loose arm holes or bare midriffs but it is just a cover for their Mormon sensibilities with regards to revealing clothing. Also, instead of trying to provide ways for people to do the workouts they want to do management puts up signs to prohibit those workouts. I understand that college students can be difficult to control but if someone wants to do bar rows, wall exercises, or weighted walking lunges minor modifications to the facilities could accommodate those activities but instead a sign goes up. Be super careful with your weights too, setting them down too loudly will get you scolded and will also shake the entire floor because the weight room floor is basically a big drum with inadequate structural support. You really can feel the vibrations from other people working out half the room away and when the train goes by (which happens every 10 minutes) it shakes the entire room. The locker room situation is probably the most glaring issue though (I've attached a fairly representative picture). They are cramped and very poorly ventilated so it always seems uncomfortably humid. To add to the problem the individual lockers are small and poorly ventilated so good luck getting your towel or sweaty gym clothes to dry before the bacteria populations sky rocket and bring on the funk. Some patrons have tried to hang their towels or clothes over the door of their lockers after their workout to get them to dry faster but of course instead of fixing the real problem management put up another sign forbidding the practice. Good luck hanging up your work/street clothes while you workout too, the lockers are too small to hang a dress shirt so I hope you like wearing a slightly funky, wrinkly shirt to work after the gym. And that is if you can actually get a locker, more likely you are going to have to keep your gym stuff either in your car (which is difficult due to the campus parking situation) or with you through your classes and work day. They seriously underestimated the number of lockers that would be needed and they charge a premium for them if you wait in line and actually manage to get one. Instead they provide open cubbies in the workout area so you can leave your wallet, laptop, car keys, etc. in an easy to steal from location and stuff your work/street clothes in your bag to get wrinkly. They are kind enough to remind you with another sign not to leave valuables in the cubbies though, like you have a choice. This place was designed by and is currently managed by people who have no concept of what it is like to actually use a gym.

Kristian Hemb

Very large gym...very large disappointment. The dumbbells only go up to 100 pounds, there are no Olympic pads for safe lifts, instead one has to quietly and unsafely lower their weights. In this large facility there is only one urinal next to the free weight erea, my house has two, this is unfathomable. If i wasn't a student i wouldn't lift here, im a student and i barley want to lift here. Speaking of which, as a student, my U of U ID card gets me int the gym, but if i leave my card in my wallet which i dont bring to the gym for safety reasons then there is no way of looking me up in the system i would have to pay $5 which i obviously don't have on me because i don't have my wallet with me. For the money put into the place, its a disappointment.

Keyan Hansen

This gym is really nice. They have a ton of equipment, and multiples of all the main staple machines that are used frequently. I rarely had to wait for machines. They have way too many cardio machines, which doesn't make sense, considering that campus is minutes from wonderful trails and you'll get a cardio workout getting to the gym on that hill any way besides a car. They have personal training options for students, it's about $30 a session. Considering most gyms cost that much just to attend, this is a great deal and made a huge difference for me. I was super stressed and dropped a ton of weight while in my major, and was able to get my health back in order, diet on track, and got a decent looking body in a matter of one semester (granted I have a history of fitness before this unhealthy stage). I can't believe I didn't take more advantage of this place. I knew the college had amenities and resources, but this is by far one of the best. Not to mention the rock climbing wall, and pool, and everything else. My one frustration was the locker rooms. All lockers are reserved at the beginning of the semester, so you either need to wait in line at the crack of dawn to purchase one, or you have to go change in there like an idiot hoping you aren't blocking someone else's stuff. They should be code locked, so you can just walk in, find an empty one, and use it for the day. I can't tell you how many locks covered in dust I saw there... So frustrating. Overall an amazing amenity though, definitely check it out!

M. Serhat

Not one to write reviews, but I need to say this because it's affecting other people as well. First of all, the facility is great. Basketball courts, indoor soccer field, hot tub, swimming pool, racquetball, you name it. The issue with this place isn't with the facilities themselves, but how they are operated, especially by the "staff". The following need to be addressed: -The staff members are very incompetent and couldn't care less about the satisfaction of the patrons, especially as you go higher up the ladder -If you're a full time student for two semesters out of the three, and you try to come to the gym during the summer, you are treated not as a member of the University who pays $12K a year, but simply as a guest -Guest fee is increased to an abnormal $8 -If you are a registered student and you forget your card, instead of looking you up in the system, which they can easily do, they will charge you $5 and will ask you to come back later on during the week with your UCard to come and get your refund -It costs tremendous amounts of money to rent out equipment. I've seen community colleges who don't charge to check out the equipment as long as you return it. If you're a student who frequents the basketball/soccer often, the sum of checking out a basketball/soccer ball will add up quite easily. It's a shame that the life center (which we pay $70 for in misc. fees in every tuition bill) doesn't choose to care for its students whatsoever. If they don't charge to rent out equipment, be a little bit more flexible with students who are full time, and actually train their employees, this place would be pretty good.

Ian Johnson

Beautiful gym. Hours are horrible. Please make it open more often.

Rosalia Villegas

Poor customer service. The Student Life Center has the ability to automatically charge me for its services but when I accidentally forget my Ucard they cannot verify that I'm a member. Then choose to charge me again for a day pass. The facility does not have a proper deadlift platform.

Benjamin Smith

There are a few key reasons I came to leave a review: 1. Very poor management: many of their systems must go through paper first, they have separate systems that don't communicate so expect to help them commit loads of double entry. Expect the employees to not be on the same page as eachother in terms of hours of operation, policies, and procedures. Expect any necessary interaction with staff to burn 15-30 minutes more than it needs to... 2. Hours: hours of operation change constantly without much advanced warning, the pool closes randomly in the middle of the day, they close at 6pm on weekends during the summers and sometimes earlier for other facilities within the gym, its a shame such a nice facility is so poorly managed. They always appear overstaffed too, I bet they could stay open longer without having to up costs if they kept well trained and knowledgeable employees on the same page and didn't overstaff non peak hours. 3. Customer service: the students and employees who work here are nice don't get me wrong, but often times clueless about policies and procedures. Multiple times I've found myself more aware of how to interact with their system than they are. I've been frustrated by their badging system which thanks to their poor system that starts and ends with paper it took 3 weeks to enter their system (they have a campus wide authentication and single sign on solution, it shouldn't be that hard) and them they'll charge you $5 if you forget your badge... I hope that the university stops squandering this asset and puts someone in charge who will retain qualified employees, manage the facilities, and create systems that waste less time and resources PS: students are automatically paying for this with their or tuition and not getting a lot in return.

Mormon dress code is enforced at a public state funded school. The rules are made up by a staff that has no background or interest in fitness. The only reason this gym exists is that it is paid for by student tuition. If this gym had to compete for its' business it would not succeed. I spoke with the overweight, uninterested manager after being told my tank top was unacceptable. She just repeated the mormon dress code like it was a recording. I wish this place was run by a more competent and interested management.

Harris Porter

Great gym, pool, included with tuition at the U. The locker rental prices are a bit expensive, so expect to haul a wet towel back with you, if you plan on showering in the locker rooms, which by the way has no real good vantage points to hide in.

Taylor Jacobsen

A great place for students to exercise! Plenty of machines, so there's never any waiting, and there's something for everyone. You can even get a massage or take a class for a pretty good price.

Theodore McClure

Don’t listen to the one star reviews. If you’re going to the gym to work out and improve your quality of life then dress code shouldn’t be an issue. If you’re coming to the gym for narcissistic reasons you probably dont want come here. Because you’re probably not meeting the dress code. The equipment is fantastic the staff can act like zealots sometimes, but if you’re not abusing equipment and throwing things everywhere they wont even bother you. The staff is trying to keep the equipment nice and not let college students destroy the place. Facilities are fantastic and its always clean.

Bronson Lim

A lot of people are saying this gym is fantastic. Its ok. The hours are weird, which was mentioned. The building itself is weird with a lot of empty space for sitting yet the building crowds equipment into small spaces (e.g. the weight room). I agree with the complaints about parking but the trax drops you off right by the gym. Just like everywhere else in Utah, it is bureaucratic. So expect that. Having said all that, its low cost for those affiliated with the university. It does have a lot of things going on: rock gym, pool, basketball, etc.. I just wish they consulted someone with common sense before building the gym. Then again, maybe there are reasons they built it that idiotic way.

Sage Helton

I get in free as a student here, and I was extremely surprised by the wide variety of amenities which are offered here. From rock climbing to racquet ball to traditional weights and cardio machines, they really have it all. Unfortunately, were I not a student, I likely wouldn't pay the steep entry fee to enjoy all of this.

Zeeshan Hakim

Awesome place.

Craig Caldwell

Has a great climbing gym

Corrin Krogh

I love the facility itself. Nice equipment and machines. I HATE the rules. No other gym has had so many rules and they are completely random. I have been singled out for things and the next day watch them not care when three other people do or wear something far worse. This is a university, it should be a place of open minds and fairness.

Kristine Godfrey

Take my preschool class to swim lessons .Staff does an awesome job.

Chadd Barney

Great environment for anybody to come and work out. All the patrons are very courteous.

Joe Shrawder

Same problem as L Mac. I have been wearing a certain cut off for the past year to the life center that I specifically made to abide by their policy. Was never a problem until yesterday. I guess now as of yesterday, they made even stricter rules regarding cutoffs and I was asked to leave or put a sweatshirt on, despite me telling him "this was never an issue" until now. Wouldn't even let me finish my workout. This place is a joke, which is a shame because it is a nice facility but run by morons.

Mitch Talmadge

I really appreciate having this gym on campus. I wish they had less expensive beginner swimming classes. They have a $45/semester athletic swimming class but for beginners you have to pay upwards of $90/week to learn :(

Marled Galicia

Very clean best gym out there!

Tyler Hawks

Been lifting here for a few years on a spouse pass. Would not come here otherwise. Parking system has gotten worse and it's crowded. Barbells for squats are bent and have no knurling. No Oly round plates, bumpers, or platforms. Any other gym is better equipped. The pools and hot tub are nice.

Rachael Price

I feel so sad to be giving this one star because overall I love this facility. I have never had any issues with my significant others pass, or with renewing it, until I had to deal with one of the supervisors, Mari, tonight. She was very short with me and even aggressive. I came to renew my SO pass but did not have my husband with me. Previously I was told by her that all I would need was a form of payment and my husbands student ID. I was coming today in hopes to make it to a class, and to renew my pass since it’s a new semester. She told me I could NOT renew it because my husband was not with me. When I asked if I could at least fill out the form she would not give it to me?? It seriously took 4 tries and then one of her subordinates finally was kind enough to let me fill it out. I then asked if I could call my husband and get verbal consent, and Mari said that there was in fact a paper I could sign concerning a forgotten pass or signature that could get me in for at least a day pass so I could get to my class, and then proceeded to tell me that she would however not do that for me?? I do not understand. Also, I needed help filling out the form, I was confused on which identification numbers to put where, and she grabbed my husbands ID card OUT OF MY HAND quite aggressively and flipped it on it’s back while pointing to a number and rolling her eyes, looking to her subordinates for validation. I have NEVER been treated this way ANYWHERE. Then when I asked for assurance that my form was filled out and politely asked for it back, she would not give it to me. I asked for it back again and she just looked at me with her grip hardening on my paper, I finally had to reach over to grab it and she still wouldn’t let go, so now my registration paper is completely ripped. I have never left a review on anything, even with awful service because I feel it’s only fair to give people the benefit of the doubt. Mari has changed that for me.I draw the line at physical aggression. I am an employee at this university and understand it’s strive for excellence, especially in patient/people care. I am appalled in the way in which I was treated tonight, this is NOT the kind of representation the University of Utah should be giving to it’s public, especially not in the hands of a supervisor.

Alex Chagovetz

This gym is really only open to U of U students and staff but if you can get in this is a very modern and fantastic gym. The pool area has an Olympic pool and play pool and a 30+ person hot tub. The track is a fun non circle shape and all the equipment is brand new. Small but fun rock climbing area as well

Erika Price

if you’re a student they do NOT treat you like a customer. Lady at the desk was super rude...

walker Brenk

The staff are super nice and helpful, but they are forced to enforce some rediculous rules that don’t make sense for a gym. I’ve been asked to leave for wearing cut off even though I went to all classes wearing it that day. They’ll stop you mid workout to remove “all personal items” from the area. Apparently a hoodie folded under your bench is a danger to yourself and others. The gym is very clean and the equipment is maintained and repaired fast when broken. But the constant enforcement of rediculous rules ruins it for me.

Jonah Brown

Nice place but beyond horrible hours.

Triton Sea

Great facility!!! Wonderful & helpful staff

Jake Mabey

Huge facilities, brand new. Swimming, cardio, weights, racket ball, heavy bags, a cafe, lots of televisions, a track, all in door.

Alex Kratville

At most times after 5pm it is almost completely full. If you have specific weight training programs you will have to modify them because you wont being able to use what you need every time. Also, people will stand inches from you even if it is not necessary. Normally this wouldnt be an issue but with people who jave no idea how to train, this becomes dangerous. Overall this gym has a decent amount of equipment but the general population of users are newbies who dont understand how to be safe. Most of my problems with using this gym are the people and not the gym itself. Staff also seems attentive.

Chilton Hawk

Good workout facility

Will Jacobsen

Dress code is a joke. Poor layout and use of space.

Alyssa Castor

The hours of this facility are absurd and should be reconsidered. The layout is confusing at times and very inefficient. It's built beautifully, but not utilized or organized in a cohesive manner. I've heard a multitude of complaints from people I know about the dress code regulations, and the way the staff enforces it. It's run by other students, who aren't very informative or helpful. Don't bother trying to go to their drop-in classes, because they'll most likely cancel them.

Colton Gardner

Wide selection of features and services in a brand new beautiful building. Don't like that you have to pay for parking and the rock wall hours are pretty short. Prices for equipment rental are pretty cheap, even more so with the student discount.

Jack Hampton

I've been to a lot of gyms in my time, in the military and out, and this is a good establishment. Should one find themselves a student or on campus then get your butt in and work out here! Multiple floors of every type of exercise style you could want. Yes, the weights area is fair sized, but it doesn't have as many options as other facilities offer. And be wary of the high traffic rate here, it is a campus facility mind you. It is often quite busy and getting the equipment you need can be difficult. The rest of the facility makes up for it however, as you have so many things you can do.

Stetson Blackmore

Great place for students and others to workout. Everything is well maintained. Simply wish to see a few new stationary bikes that display information that pertains more to cyclists and triathletes. Measurable's like power & relative speed are much more impactful for a competitive athlete than calories burned.

Thomas Shober

Great gym. Climbing is fun and the wight room is pretty big. I hardly ever have to wait and when I do its only a few minutes.

Megan Murri

Full service super high quality gym and pools Staff are super nice!! The only downside is that they close pretty early..

Matt Wedel

Pretty nice, fairly clean. Gets pretty crowded. Too many frat kids.

Dallas McManamon

Logistically horrible design. Most of the other comments explain it. Bathrooms and locker rooms lack proper ventilation so they smell horrible. Dont have areas to drop weights or throw medicine balls. Lockers are next to the pool which makes sense, but the pool is hardly open Hours.... Stay open later!

Bryan Porter

The facility is always well take care of and features a variety of activities that make things enjoyable. There are small courts for practising sports, larger ones for pickup games, a large pool, a bouldering and rock climbing wall, gym machines, and more.

Indira Gutierrez

Summary: Overall a great gym, so good I wish it was open more often, longer. Pros: This is an excellent gym with an Olympic sized swimming pool, an smaller pool for kids, a hot tub and outdoor pool; huge basketball and racquetball courts, a rock climbing wall That spans the height of the building, locker rooms on the ground level and bathrooms on every floor, an indoor and outdoor track. The usual equipment like treadmills, stationary bikes, stair master, rowers and the elliptical; as well as some unique items like a ladder climber. Fixed and free weights as well as designated areas for those doing power lifting and squats, bench presses and seated presses. Overall a solid gym. Cons: Lockers: Wish I didn't have to Pay $0.75 to lock something up though. I have my own lock but you are required to rent a locker which comes with a lock. This semester I rented a semester locker for $32.00, but you have to be there early (before 7 am) on the 1st day of the semester to get one because they go fast. Hours: Typically the gym opens at 6 am, personally I wish it would open at 5 am. Hours can be very limited outside of the typical semesters Fall mid August-mid December and Spring mid Januar-mid May. For example for the upcoming MLK holiday, the gym will open at 9 am and close at 8 pm. Outside of semester hours the gym can close as early as 6 pm. On Sundays the gym generally opens later and closes earlier. The busiest time of day is typically between 4 pm - 8 pm. More detail: Free to currently enrolled students who have a Ucard! Employees can sign up for a payroll deducted membership at a negligible $12/pay check, if recall correctly. Architecturally the building is a gorgeous steel and glass structure featuring vibrant red accents (a nod to the school colors), as well as beautiful brick and stone work throughout. On the north side of the building you'll find a cozy fireplace as well as large fire pit just outside the main entrances (west side of the building), perfect for warming up during the cold winter months. On the main floor you'll find lounge areas and tables near outlets for quiet studying. There is a University credit union branch, outdoor recreation equipment rental shop and a small smoothie and sandwich shop (with limited hours) on this floor. The bottom floor, where the locker rooms, pools, rock climbing wall, racquetball courts, and 2nd set of basketball courts are found; also features a small lounge area with TV's perfect for waiting for a companion while they change in the adjacent locker rooms. There is small service counter on this floor too which sells headphones, hair ties in case you forget one as well as U of U swag. This is also the desk you'll visit if you would like to rent a day locker. The 3rd floor, gym area has open cubby's for storage so you don't have to rent a day locker for $0.75, as well as lounge areas and televisions throughout. The 4th floor has a track that circles the entire 4th floor; cardio equipment such as treadmills, bikes, and ellipticals which overlook the lower main gym area, as well as floor matts and open areas where one can stretch or do calisthenic type exercises. There are classrooms and offices throughout the building. Outside you'll find a minimalist zero scape motif featuring a plaza made of orange and beige brick, complimented by decorative dessert plants set upon a bed of colorful red rocks as well as picnic tables with umbrellas to block the sun during warmer months. There are a wide variety of classes and events regularly held here; from yoga, intramural basketball, martial arts clubs; to social events like movie nights in the pool.

Matt Healey

Great recreation options especially for students and those loving close to the University of Utah

Chris Reay

Skirts below the knee, no spaghetti straps, and those ankles better be covered. Welcome to college.

luke thomas

I hate how nice this building is. It really shows where the university spends your tuition.

Derek Jones

Because my wife works on campus we have a membership. They have free weights, exercise machines, basketball, racketball, heavy bag room, the Crimpson Lagoon and a rental area for seasonal sports equipment.

Martijn van Exel

Parking is sometimes a bit tricky, especially when there are events at nearby HPER. Facility itself is modern, clean. Staff helpful!

Eston Humphrey

Great place to workout and play sports. Needs better hours and more racquetball ball courts. There is only 2. Count 1 has the best lighting.

Carter Henderson

No overhead lifts allowed, no bumper plates, plan on getting chewed out for sweating too much, and get real excited about the slow pace. It’s a great place for a terrible workout!

ANI P

Best rec center in Utah!
