Love this fitness center!! The equipment is new and top notch, the personal trainers are savvy and take care of my personal goals and the new management is there to take care of customers. I feel that the membership is worth every penny and the facilities are nice and clean. The fitness classes, tanning bed and facilities makes me forget about the daily life hustle as soon as I walk in!! To top it all, I grab a scrumptious protein shake from their smoothie bar as I leave at the end of my work out!

Need to find a workout while on vacation. This is an excellent facility with all the equipment that I need. I waz rather impressed with the variety of machines and free weight equipment they had. Trap bars, kettle bells, free weighs and dumbells to 120lbs. The equipment was in good shape, facility very clean and the customer service saw great. In addition, the day passes were 10 dollars with is unheard off to use such a quality facility. If you ever are in Raleigh and need to workout, you need to go here.

Goodness gracious don't ever try to cancel your membership. I've been trying to cancel it for over a month now!! I've contacted the gym, the number associated with the withdrawal on my statement, left a voicemail at the corporate office, and sent several requests on their website, all to no avail. Now that i've had so much trouble I Googled it and i'm not the only one! Beware unless you want to be auto billed forever!!!

Good for the price. I've been a member for little under a year now and am fairly satisfied. There's plenty of equipment, whether for weightlifting or cardio. Not as crowded compared to other gyms in the area. Machines are in good condition and usually get fixed pretty quickly. They offer a variety of classes, with Cycle Jam (spin class) being my personal favorite. You can't get that kind of intense workout with good music and a motivating instructor elsewhere. Anyone who says otherwise is probably a snobby Les Mills instructor speaking out of jealousy. Smoothie bar protein drinks are tasty and filling. I recommend the Mocha with Peanut Butter. Staff is friendly and approachable. Overall, a good bang for your buck!

You'll always have access to equipment with little to no wait and the staff is super friendly and helpful! Added bonus - they have a GREAT smoothie bar for that after workout deliciousness!

I have been a member here thanks to the client you guys canceled the membership for no reason and was called the police as if he had done something bad making his reputation look bad. I’m very unhappy with how management is handling this situation of a 2 year old in child care they are not being profesional at all. I have known this couple for a while now and they are really good people and kids are kids if you are a parent you know toddlers just want to be playing around and they do not want to be sitting and that’s what the sitters suppose to be watching, as a client I’m asking for the owner to have a talk with the member because this was not the correct way to handle this situation management Karol has not been complying with the policy just decided to take a shortcut and cancel this persons membership with out looking for alternatives.Manager at this location needs more training apparently she can’t handle this...

Bi-level. Lower level which has all the free weights and bench presses have zero cell reception and asked repeatedly for wifi but never installed. Wifi extender for $40 would resolve the issue but staff indifferent regarding this concern.

I've been waiting for a few months for more classes. Preferable spin classes! There are only like 4 offered the entire week and they're all after 6:00pm????? I was promised lists more variety in times...disappointed..probably going to cancel

Used to be very easy to use until September 2015. Now, packed at lunch and after work (no empty lockers, hot water runs out) - likely oversold. Also very unpleasant not to be able to use a part of the gym (random sections at random times) because there is a class, someone visiting, etc. A few more months of this and they will start to loose people.

Nice sized gym in the basement floor. Note that this means no windows, if that's important to you. 2 floors make up this facility which is of pretty ample size, giving it a more varied and spread out feel. I mainly go off-peak, so it's never been crowded for me. Given the good variety of equipment, generally clean and maintained, I'd say this is an excellent value for money. As with every gym I've been at, needs more cable carabiners, and fewer guys who think they're strongmen but never strong enough to rerack their weights.

When I opened my account with retro I told Karol the manager clearly that it was going to be under my name but the billing information was going to be with my husband card what she did was created the account under my husband name so when I went to workout they told me that I couldn’t go in without my husband so I had to change the name of the account to my name she charged me $25 for her mistake and she was yelling at me saying that it was my fault that I was the one that didn’t listen basically talking to me like I was her kid in front of every customer that was walking in. Very rude unprofessional customer service and that’s why I barely go to the gym to not have to deal with her angry dog face since unfortunately I’m stuck with this contract !! Not all employees are rude I would suggest you stay away from Laravia the girl with the braids and Karol the manager they have the worst attitudes I see why they get along so well. Laravia wanna be boss rude as idk what talks to employees really bad in front of customers which makes this place look really bad and ghetto...but yes guys think twice before joining this gym!

Buyer beware, it’s great until you move out of state and try to cancel but then when attempting to cancel it sits in an email box for a month plus because “management changed” and nobody else has any access to it apparently so your forced to continue to pay and then when trying to talk to someone you get run over the phone and are hardly allowed to speak

This place is a hidden gem of gyms in Durham. I can't believe I haven't found this place until now. The customer service is unreal, they actually listen and seem to care, which really compliments the upbeat & positive vibe of this gym. I have been to EVERY gym in the area as well as the surrounding area and this place is just as big, clean and has more than enough free weights and cardio equipment as compared to everywhere else. Also, all of the equipment is in like new condition. AND 4 squat racks.. seriously?! The smoothie bar was really cool, they even brought it to me while I was on one of their Hydro Beds. Lastly, I have never taken a group class before but the front desk staff convinced me to try a Less Mills - Body Pump class. I was very comfortable, had plenty of space in the Group fitness room and the instructor was AWESOME! I felt like a part of a team. Highly recommend at least coming and taking a tour of this place.

Best gym in Durham hands down! Active member for a little over a year. Gym is very well maintained and always clean. Since new management the upgrades in the gym has been right on point as far as meeting the needs of the customers. staff is great and they greet you on a first name basis coming in and always acknowledging patrons when they leave. A gym that allows you to be yourself and more than welcome your intense workouts unlike Planet Fitness. Looing forward to seeing what other great upgrades will come.

Facility meets my needs. Staff is friendly and professional. Day to day maintenance is kept up with which is really appreciated. Sanitation products are always available. I feel I get good value for my monthly dues. Owner stays involved from my observation. Lots of parking. Some pothole issues and small roof leaks during heavy rain but that is more on the property owner than the gym.

I was told a different story every single time I had called, which was multiple. Only the manager can cancel and every single message I left for her was apparently never received. This was probably one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever received.

--Edited this since they moved equipment around and it's much better as a result. -- I've been a member here for almost two years and here are my overall thoughts. The good: The location and price are the best things about this gym. It's easy for me to get off the ferry, do my thing and go to work. The staff is great and there is a good range of equipment. The bad: General upkeep of gym and equipment leaves much to be desired. Mirrors are broken and never replaced and some machines are out of order for days. Things are getting better in this regard though. The locker room is usually clean but very cramped and has only four showers. This leaves long lines at busy hours. I really don't like that there are spray bottles. no one is going to use a spray bottle to clean the equipment and very few do here. This is the only Retro I know that doesn't have wipes. This could be a really great gym if more attention and care is given to the gym space itself. The staff is great but more is needed for general upkeep. I go to about 4 different Retro's but this is my home gym out of convenience. This Retro isn't and the top for sure.

I’ve been trying to cancel my membership because I moved away and it’s inconvenient for me now. They have given me 10 different stories about why I can’t cancel. Keep giving me the run around. Then they hang up and never answer the phone again!!!! I’ve never. EVER dealt with such unprofessional, rude and infuriating behavior in my life!....how is this the correct way to operate a business? Trying to squeeze another month out of your members? This is borderline criminal. I STILL haven’t heard back.

This club is a real WOW. I have seen this club under construction and as it nears opening, and it is an incredible gym with full amenities. It is unlike any other club in the city and you can be a member for less than $20 bucks a month. It's worth it to join just for access to the showers and lockers.

The equipment is readily available, their classes will get blood pumping and helps in burning fat, the tanning bed is an extra, and the smoothee bar is a feature most gyms do not have which is inclusive of customizing smoothees to an individuals liking regarding proteins, fat burners and flavors. Worth the cost as one gets what they pay for.

Same thing happened to me as another reviewer. I asked to cancel my account back in June since I was moving out of the country. Once by going in person and leaving a note with the front desk and twice calling. I also called them twice and emailed them two days ago and no reply from the management. The front desk people are doing their best to help me, but they don't have the authority to cancel my account. It's been six months and they're still charging me. I wouldn't join this gym unless you plan to continue to be with them until the end of time.

This is one of the best gyms I have been to in a long time. This gym has everything you need if you to bulk up or tone up or just stay in shape. The staff is always nice, professional and very helpful. And the management actually cares about the needs of the members. Gym is always clean and presentable everyday.

Bad first: these people are crooks!!!!!! They keep auto billing my account and when I call to ask why, the staff is always just as confused as I am! They never give you a copy of your contact so that way they can sneak charges in your card without warnings.. Good: the mixxedfit class is awesome but they only have it late in the afternoon

The overall gym is fine. (Please scroll down for my updates). Last update: It took 7 weeks but they finally issued a refund. But my goodness, management and the employees are incompetent. I started off my membership at the Williamsburg Retro (better, bigger, etc.). However, once I moved out of the Williamsburg area and started using this location more, Retro Fitness transferred my entire membership to this location. So, when I went to cancel in person (to the new location) about 2 months prior to my year end membership, the gym employee said I was already cancelled. Great, I thought - easy. Indeed, I had paperwork from their online finance company stating the same thing, that my membership was cancelled. However, they incorrectly told me this apparently, as they were reading my membership information from the Williamsburg gym. Little did I know, they cancelled my old membership and gave me a "new" membership with a "new" contract number. When I explained this to the incompetent and rude manager, she yelled at me and said that I had to read the terms of the contract. I'm an attorney, and I explained the situation, and said that I was never given a new contract or contract number and she said that wasn't her problem. Eventually, after some back and forth, she acquiesced and told me she'd provide a refund. It has now been weeks of waiting for a refund for the gym (was told 3-5 business days). The only good thing I can say, is that it's cheap and so if this happens to you, it's not a lot of money, but it is the principle. They seemingly do not care about their customers. Carol, please process my refund. When you tell me to refer to the steps laid out in my contract, please be advised that you have not provided a contract to me, despite my plea on the phone when we spoke. Update a week later: Still no refund. I have called the front desk several times today, and both times they have told me that the manager is busy, and that by the end of the business day they would get back in touch. This was a lie. It's now COB and still no word from the manager after my second call. The front desk associate basically laughs when I ask what I have to do to get a call from the manager. If you value decent business practices, steer clear - they're immoral. Update two weeks later: Still no refund. The front desk assistant, Isiah, who I am now on a first name basis with, laughs when he says he's relaying my messages to the manager who is never at her desk or is constantly on another line. I've asked to wait, or for a call back, and I get nothing. The level of disrespect at this location is appalling. Have another gym steal your money, because this place will do it and laugh at you. Update 8 weeks later - Finally issued refund. Feel like I need a cigarette after getting it.

It's okay, great price. However, I think the locker rooms , bathroom and shower area could need more frequent attention. Also they need to get the easy pre wet wipes so people are more encouraged to clean the equipment after use. I understand they're just starting up, so trying to get their act together, but so far, cleanliness is my biggest concern

If I have an issue I can usually look towards management for help. Well I didn’t feel that way at this gym. Karol the manager signed me up for a membership and didn't share crucial information about the policy. I’ve had such a difficult time bringing my plus one and even bribed to leave money in the tip jar to let him in the gym. When I talked to Carol about it, she acted like it was all my fault for not knowing the policy. May I remind you the information she lacked to share with me. More then once my plus one had to leave and wasn’t allowed access to the gym. Finally I just decided to cancel my membership. I just feel like she isn’t an honest person and I could be wrong, but that how she made me feel. Anyways, I’m not saying don’t join this gym, I’m just leaving a review of my experience.

I was assured that they'd make the child care area as nice as the rest of the gym so I joined and waited......... a few months later it seemed the childcare area got worse so I called to cancel didn't think anything of it until I looked at my statements. I then again called come in they say we've fixed it, since I'm still under contract I still get billed either way even though I've not been in there since Feb/Mar.Its now July and still getting billed. The place is nice, I liked it. Although I am very displeased with the paperwork. I’ve been a member for 3 months, and recently had a knee injury which would put me away from the gym for some time, for which I decided to cancel my membership, because I probably wouldn’t be using it for some time. When I came in to cancel my membership, I was told at that, at that very moment, that I would have to pay a percentage of my remaining months, 25% of 8 months plus the $19.99 of the next billing month in order to cancel. This is no hassle free or anything like that, they do not tell you that when you sign up, they do not explain anything about it, until you are actually there and they’re trying to get your money. At the end, it was my mistake for not reading the small letters. I will be moving my money to a different gym once I’m ready to hit the gym again, and will never return to a retro fitness ever again.

Good gym, nice and spacious. However, the HOURS are TERRIBLY UNFAIR on and around holidays and weekends in general. Closed on Sundays which is just absurd considering most people prefer to workout on Sundays given their schedules are light. Closes at noon on Saturdays. I've been to plenty of other retro locations in NJ, this is probably THE WORST.

Here’s my full story of Retro Fitness: Although it’s a lovely facility with top notch equipment in a great smoothie bar, the customer service and billing side is something you will really need to look out for before signing the contract. Upon signing, they will not tell you that you will later be assessed an annual membership fee, depending on when you sign up. It was about believe about $40 or so. Also, if you want to cancel your contract early, you will be assessed 25 percent of the remaining balance of your contract. On top of any late fees are things that come up. If your card doesn’t charge for the amount, You will be assessed a $19.50 late fee. The whole customer service and billing side has displeasure me, which is why I give the stars for this review. Ultimately, even after reading the contract, you still aren’t told about the charges that are coming. Know what you’re getting into before you sign.

No frills gym with tons of space and equipment. If you're looking for a club like experience to be a part of the 'scene', this isn't it. If you want to get a good workout in without having to feel cramped and wait for a bench, this is your place. when Karol /Carol (not sure how her name is spelled) signed me up for my membership she told me there wasn’t any cancellation fee. I vividly asked that question coz I didn’t want to have to deal with the hassle of cancellation from my other gym since I travel a lot for work and knew I wasn’t staying there very long... only for me to be told when I wanted to cancel that I’ll be charged $150. Spoke with Ben, and all he could tell me was “Sorry you were misinformed but that’s company policy”. Of course he’d say that coz Carol is his boss. FYI Ben, there’s no difference between a lying charlatan and someone who engages in willful misinformation just to make a sale. Can’t believe she is allowed to run a business.

Been a member here for a while now because of proximity to my office. The facility is great- new equipment, clean, well kept. The place is rarely ever busy, even at peak hours. The price point, most importantly, is right. For 30 bucks a month (including an extra 10 for towel service) you get a reliable, accessible gym package. It's obviously not the NY health and racket club in terms of amenities, but it's great for what it is.

It's good but the hours are very inconvenient. Closes early on Friday, Saturday closes at noon which doesn't make any sense, and doesn't open on Sundays at all. All the other Retros are open on weekends so I don't understand.

Lots of great equipment and machines. Locker room is quite clean. I would like if they provided towels. Maybe a guide to fully/thoroughly explain what is and isn't allowed, i.e. moving weights and equipment and to where.

This gym is ok compared to others. Half of the machines are broken and it gets too crowded to get a good workout in. The only good employee was Alex, who is no longer there. I was a member here for 2 years because of the convenience in walking there straight after work. However, my membership ended in June 2018 and I had requested a membership cancellation back in March 2018 in person with one of the employees, since they secretly request that you give a two months notice. And just FYI, there is no cancellation fee once you’ve reached your year term. Two months later I was still seeing charges on my card, I emailed and called and did not receive a response. I had no choice but to call my credit card company, which is only a short term solution. I went back in person to speak with the manager Carol Lorde. She tried to tell me I would probably be responsible for some of the charges (which I should not, given there is no cancellation fee for me), but that she would look into it and give me a call. I never received one and instead received a letter from a credit collecting company. Do not waste your time at this place unless you plan to make a life commitment with them. My membership was paid on time every single month for the two years, I was a faithful customer and now 6 months later I am dealing with issues with them. It’s ridiculous. I would give no stars if I could.

Than management said that I have to pay for one month more because I had notify them 20 days before (not 30). And today they charged TWICE bigger than I was usually paying.... FOR WHAT???? I have tried to call them but they never answered.... So now I have to waste my time go there during my work day to catch the manager because she is working till 4pm and the rest of the staff know nothing.... I am came on July 8th to cancel my membership in the fitness club and on August 1st they charged me to maintain themselves. NICE! Also they were so worry about this review and asked to deleted it, so I am not going to... But It is something, at least they are worry about their online reputation. Never had anything but a great experience here! There's not an overly pretentious gym culture. The equipment is clean and new and it's never overly crowded. Not to mention there is a movie theater with cardio equipment in it where they frequently play new or even R rated movies! What more could you ask for?

This by far is the worst managed gym in the country! The staff is completely incompetent. Don't believe what they say about the month-to-month membership. They will overcharge your credit card and make it completely impossible to cancel your membership. In addition, they will try to charge you extra fees for towel service, so watch what they charge your card. You will then be harassed day and night by ABC Financial looking for past dues.Don't ever expect a call back from the membership team, a woman named Carol or the franchise owner, they will do whatever it takes to avoid you from cancelling ad trying to keep collecting monthly fees. I've been trying to cancel my account since June. Corporate is of no help, they will point you back to the back to the franchise. It's the biggest scam ever. In addition, the club isn't very clean, too cramped, has a terrible layout and poor ventilation. The locker rooms are kind of shady, be careful. You will also get proposition every day by trainers looking to sell you training sessions, they keep asking you every day, it's disturbing and ruins the rhythm of your workout. It's a failing franchise that's understaffed. Your better off joining one of the clubs across the street. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!!!! The response listed below from the owner is bull sheet. I can't begin to tell you how many calls and e-mails I sent, I even visited the club on numerous occasions, they've perfected the stall technique so they can continue to milk you for monthly fees. Trust me, join any other gym but this one, the location is the worst, and you will be stalked by trainers looking for you to spend hundreds of dollars on one-on-one sessions. Bottom line is this is a failing location with management issues, gym is cramped and not clean.

Probably the worst retro fitness I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting. Not only are the locker rooms overcrowded, often times the toilets are annihilated and out of service. Even the MTA has better toilet/customer ratios. The locker room equipment is subpar and frequently not in working order. In addition, you have to haggle at the front desk to get weight clips. In addition, the hours are only attend-able for someone employed by the local library. By no means a proper fit for a young professional employed in manhattan. A personal training session I was offered upon signing up never materialized. And do not rely on the front desk staff to be knowledge of the contracts you are signing up for. Every answer I received for my questions in regards to the membership ran contrary to the actual details of the contract. Lastly, good luck ever getting in contact with them. I have moved away from any reasonable radius and have been unsuccessful in many attempts to contact to initiate the cancelation of membership. Only get a membership if you need to fool yourself and those around you by finally being able to claim you belong to a “gym”.

I'm a very nice person but still the woman discriminates on the job. Very unprofessional. Even if you are wearing headphones, the music is too loud especially on second level (basement) So be prepared to listen for their selection of vocals. If you can tolerate loud music- the gym is good

It's really hard to resolve anything with management. When I joined the gym they offered a large number of LES MILLs classes. They also promised to expand the classes to include before work options. Half way into the year they discontinued all LES MILLS classes and never offered anything early. I give the gym three stars only because the equipment is new.

One of the worst Retro's I've ever been to. Workout machines are stacked too close together, no breathable air to speak of. As someone who can easily run a 5k, I stuffed to run a mile here, because THERES NO AIR to speak of. The only available mat area is sectioned off to "VIP" members only. Do if you're cool with slivers of breathable air, and only need machines for your workout, this is the location for you.

I'm forced to go to this "gym" because because its the only one in the city and not to far from my work but definitely will change next year because its a dump. I never post reviews but I always leave Retro Fitness happy and glad I joined. The staff are awesome and friendly, but in the cool, not overbearing way. Special shout out to Cameron! I love taking advantage of my monthly package, including the hydro massage chairs and spinning classes. This gym offers all the machines I could want, is clean, and offers plenty of space for stretching and free weights, which is so important (and often lacking in other gyms). Love it, and super affordable!

Overall: Great value for the price. The Goods: Usually isn't super packed around 7 pm. It offers enough equipment ranging from free-weights to a wide variety of machines. Squat rack usually open is a plus. They also have a platform for dead-lifts. Great ventilation system and friendly staff. The Bads: Not enough lockers. Locker room is super cramped in a small area. They charge 41.79 as an upgraded towel service membership, from the regular 20.89 monthly fee, then she acts like it's hard labor to bend down and provide a towel to a paying member. The dummy is the only thing wrong with this location. I wish I knew her schedule so I could workout whenever she's not there. Hope mgmt takes notice of that buffoon.

Visiting a friend in Durham and found this place on line. Stopped in and bought a day pass and was blown away. The place looks slightly cheesy because it’s all red and yellow but it’s the best equipped gym I’ve ever been too. Had everything I was looking for. Generally clean. Newer machines. Tons of things to do. GREAT value and the two girls at front desk were very nice. I’d love for one of these to come to my hometown. I HIGHLY recommend this gym FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY

Best gym I've ever worked out at. Management and employees are very friendly and helpful. They have a lot of equipment and weights available so you don't have to wait around to lift. The movie room with cardio equipment in it is great I love watching movies while I run. And last but not least the wonderful protein smoothies they make are the bomb! A must have after a workout!

PLEASE DO NOT JOIN. If it was possibly to give negative stars I would. I went to this gym 3 times and on the fourth day I went to cancel but they told me that after three days you couldn't. I had to pay out the contract for an entire year and afterwards they were still billing me! I had to call multiple times and write multiple emails threatening to pursue legal action in order to finally terminate my membership. There is still a 30 day cancellation period afterward were they hold you responsible for bills and payments. I have been a member at multiple gyms and never have I come across such a crooked, scheming, and unprofessional company. I don't ever write reviews, but I needed to write this one in hopes of saving some innocent sole of going through the same painstaking and gruesome process that I had to endure.

I would give negative stars if I could. Two months later and I'm still trying to cancel. I'm actually impressed by how well they're running their scam. Well, not that impressed considering how obvious it is. I tried to follow their expressly written contract terms by sending in a letter requesting cancellation, and the specified club address on the contract is not even a real address and gets sent back. After finding the actual address it still gets sent back to me because the letter is not deliverable to that address (I posted the photos). Blatant and purposeful misrepresentation. I try calling the club to speak to Carol, and she's never there. In her reply to my previous yelp review she said she would be in contact, yeah that never happened. Considering that Carol personally called me after I left a bad review because of a confusion over their holiday hours to explain the confusion and get me to take my review down, I'm amazed that this current situation hasn't been resolved yet. You know why? Because they know exactly what they're doing. Do not ever sign up with this gym. You might try to actually adhere to the terms you sign but they will not adhere to the written terms just to squeeze $20 a month from you. They don't seem to understand that in contract law a party can't just make unilateral oral stipulations not specified in the written contract after the written contract has been signed. Carol, I swear if you respond to this with some variation of "We're sorry for the misunderstanding/confusion" I'm going to lose it. This is neither of those things, it's intentional. You know it, and so do we. I'm reporting them to the DCA. I suggest others do the same.

I really like this gym and have used it during visits with my sister.
