Nice location I haven't gone inside yet so maybe I'll raise my 3 in a couple days, lots of parking and great location

Sir Don Nico

Don't do right with billing

Shelby Himmelein

The worst gym out there. DONT GET A MEMEBERSHIP HERE! The worst mistake ever. They led on saying to try it and if I move over 35 miles away I can cancel it. Then when I moved they told me the only way to cancel was a buy out of 250$. This place has a terrible facility and rude service.

jaylee lesatz

It's just like planet fitness, but a little smaller. It has a lot of good equipment that is effective

Lacey Foster

I never used my membership (I shouldn't have even signed up but I was hopeful) and am going through a bankruptcy, so I asked them via email to cancel my membership and they told me that they would not cancel it and would continue taking money out of account. Don't get a membership if you never intend on using it. The only way out is to cancel your bank account apparently.

Shannon Carman

The new personal trainer there, Trish, is Great! Plus I hear she teaches Yoga, so she's great not to injure you, while still making you work!

Yvonne E Creery- Moulton

Well it is gym. Definitely not the really nice new gyms I am used to but this was the closest one to our house that had child care but I can deal with old equipment. I am starting to regret signing up due to the childcare. The YMCA had beautiful childcare rooms and the one they have is kinda scary and falling apart. Really old and the attendant is always on her phone and not welcoming at all. I watched my kid eat it (my kid was fine) and she did not even look up from her phone. Having a cell phone on you and not in a locker while working as a child care attendant is considered neglect. Guess I have just been treated really well at other places where they got to know me and my kid and had lots of space and toys. We are thinking about canceling but I am not totally there yet! I hope to see some major improvements in the childcare room because that is a deal breaker for me. My child's comfort and safety comes before anything else.

Great staff, very friendly and helpful. The facility and equipment are well maintained as well as having a great selection

Matt Johnson

I've had a great experience with this gym! It is perfectly set up to help me get results! Great help and friendly staff and trainers. I love that there is enough equipment to go around! Love this gym!!!

Joshua Givhan

If you want personal training for all around health or in something specific like boxing, then ask for Ryan. He knows what he's doing. I felt confident that I could learn more from him then the other gym I was attending. It was the right choice!

Melanie Harris

I've been going to Family Fitness for 5+ years. Wide variety of equipment to satisfy my diverse training as a professional athlete. They have it all! I love that the trainers/staff are fun, interactive, and welcoming! :) Family Fitness is a great local gym! :)

Taera Batint

Family Fitness has a huge variety of equipment for weights and cardio. The classes are awesome and offer several times to fit any schedule. The staff are always there to help, especially Kristi Underwood.

Rebecca Knight

I love family fitness .Work out in privacy and enjoy

Mehdi Vazifedan

If you don't feel like reading this one, please read at leat one of the 1star one's and save yourself, your money and time. And I mean it!! Easy to join, Tough to cancel its membership. Make sure you got membership details on paper before you join. They wont take cancellations at Portage and we have to go through its corporate center at Grand Rapids. Followups made me sick and poor.

Kind of dirty honestly but otherwise great place to lift

I was told over a year ago, by the owner, that the doors would be fixed...... I really don’t know why I even pay a membership when half of Kalamazoo/Portage goes for free since the doors stay unlocked 24/7. Absolutely no idea why I have to pay an enhancement fee when the new massage chair mysteriously disappeared TO THE OWNERS HOUSE because “it’s too nice for the gym”. How about a new treadmill or two-heck I’d even settle for the old outdated machines not being broken all the time. Owner of the place is a real class act.

Amy Merrill

This is my gym, I love it even if it doesn't have the greatest equipment....it has everything that I need to succeed!

Steve Hutson

I've been a member there for 3 years and it's a Great place to workout. They have a wide variety of equipment to satisfy anyone's workout.

xxkillzonexx100

I love the gym, great atmosphere here way better than planet fitness. Actual work gets done when you go here. Nice staff that answer questions about any concerns and a great sauna to relax in after a long workout. My favourite part of this gym is the 24 hour acsess.

Zachary Depierre

Family Fitness is by far the best gym in the area. The wide range of equipment and 24 hour access provide an atmosphere that gives you all the tools to reach any goal you can dream of. What makes this environment even better is the members and the staff they are knowledgeable, respectful, and professional all while treating members as family. Being a Veteran it's also nice to know that Vito is a veteran and staff there that can relate to your life experiences and challenges. The accumulation of all these factors and many more leverages Portage Family Fitness as the leading fitness center in the Kalamazo/Portage area.

Jennifer C

Since day 1 when I got my membership, I have loved family fitness. I felt zero pressure when signing up, I just felt genuinely cared about and that she wanted me to have a great experience. I was referred by a friend and have since referred multiple people who are very satisfied. If a machine goes down, by the next day it is fixed or a brand new machine is brought in to replace that. I appreciate that and with so many machines onsite, it doesn't really affect my workout anyway!! I'd definitely recommend family fitness!!!!!!!

Jennifer Hampton

HATE THIS PLACE. Every promise made to me when I signed my contract was a lie. He (Daniel) told me daycare was included... it's not. He told me 24 hr fitness is part of the package (when it comes). Oh...it finally came 5 months later with a $50 fee. They told my fiance for $20 we could both have 1 session with the trainer. Nope.. it's only 1 and for a half hour! That's $40/hr they make for the dumbest, most informative, training sessions. Now they tell me there's an annual "enhancement fee". What the heck is that!? There have been NO enhancements to that gym. This is the BIGGEST scam I've ever came across and I will be cancelling and they can eat the $100. Do not trust Christy, Mike, Caroline, Ashley, Bruce, and especially Daniel. The only person there worth the words coming out of his mouth is Travis.

Katy Moharter

The personal training is the best part about this gym. Both Ryan Barnes and Caren Dermody are excellent to work with and have helped me become the best version of myself. I'm so thankful for their insight and friendship. I highly recommend them and Family Fitness.

Greg Sutton

Hands down the best gym I've trained in. Plenty of equipment for everyone even during peak hours. Fun and friendly staff always willing to assist. I've been here for 3+ years and plan to continue a long partnership.

Joe B

I am working with personal trainer Evan and in just a few weeks has already improved my strength, balance and stamina. Looking forward to regaining my healthy and thinner body.

Kayla Galecka

Absolute joke of a business. I suggest anyone and everyone to stay away from this company. No accountability on their end for screwing up, and instead blames the customer.

Bryan Klemett

They gym is fine but the people who run it... they aren't. Because of the people who run this organization (corporate included) I can tell you that your money is better spent elsewhere. If you want to move and cancel your membership, to get the $75 movers fee instead of the $150 cancellation fee they have, you have to "provide a notarized copy of a mortgage, a lease, or a utility bill in your name only". No way in hell should a gym be asking for that kind of financial statements. They try to claim "it's in your contract" upon further review of said contract, it does not list what they told me in an email that I had to provide. I talked to corporate, the cancellation team and the people at the front desk and they all told me different miles for when it came to moving away. According to West Hills, all they need for a moving cancellation fee is a note that is stating you are moving and what your address is. The weight room is fine except for when something breaks... they just decide not to fix it and well tell you to your face "who cares because of this and that". It happened to me. It's a shame this place is ran by the people that are currently in place, which seems to have not changed in the last decade. If they had anyone else running it, it would be a solid gym with minimal complaints. If i could leave a no star review I would but I can't.

Sara S.

I've never been a gym attendee, I like books not weights. I specifically told Sarah, the personal training guru that I didn't know what I was doing & wanted someone to help me learn my way around and to have a lifestyle change. She had the "perfect person in mind, and couldn't wait to match me with her." She set me up with Caren, the most awful horrible trainer that didn't explain anything, made me cry & treated me like I was stupid for not knowing about the usage of the equipment. I complained and was given a new trainer, Katie. She was wonderful. Congratulates me when I tell her I've gone on walks or had salads and encourages me to go one more step but also knows I'm learning and takes the time to show me how to do something and to tell me what I'm working and how it should feel. I still have some problems, mostly billing. The corporation and the management don't see eye to eye and along the lines I've had a lot of billing issues. For example I paid cash a week prior to the posting date of my bill and they charged my credit card anyway. It hasn't been pleasant and its occurred more then once for both personal training and regular gym membership fees. I removed my credit card information and paid cash for the last 8 months of my membership, without actually going to the gym more than to pay because I felt judged and dismissed by the staff members. Last month (in november) I was called by corporate to be informed I had been charged $5 for a late fee for not paying my October balance and it was a courtesy call before I had a fee for November. That seems nice, except I paid my October payment in August. So they charged me an additional $20 on top of all the stress, drama, tears, back lash and down right rude behavior of their team. I've put in an email to Jose, the family fitness corporate supervisor but he hasn't responded yet. We'll see if they give me my money back but I'd rather be obese and have health problems than go back to that gym. What a terrible place with horrible people.

Paul and Kathy Scheel

Great gym, great trainers, great workout!

Leah Reinhold

Great facility! Lee was very knowledgeable and helpful in setting me with my membership and first training session. Thanks!!

Cal Hayes

My favorite gym

Natalie Wood

I am very pleased with my membership and family fitness overall. I have been a member for a long time. The staff has gone above and beyond for me and other members. I'm a busy mother and sometimes even forget things, for example I drive to Family Fitness and completely forgot that child care was not available friday evenings....one of the staff members ( who was going home ) stayed and watched my infant just so I could work out and made my night. This is just one example of how incredible the staff is. If something does break I know I can mention it and it will be worked on in a timely manner. I feel at home going to family fitness and being able to work out without stress. It's a phenomenal environment!

Sarah Phillips

My husband pass away may 28th and he was doing personal work out with a trainer they said that they would stop take payment and still have not it crazy not a fan lie ass place. Now it april 2017 and now they want me to pay 1,076 for something they should have cancelled you guys suck and unwill not get your money i have not even been there sice my husband pass away.

J. Heintskill

Needs upgrades badly. I have not seen one new piece of equipment in 3 years. But, I have paid a yearly betterment fee every year. Very convient hours and location.

Brian McIntyre

Bad business pratice... All ready contacted better business Bureau. Now contacting Attorney Generals office in lansing. Rated class D by better business Bureau. They withdraw money from wrong accounts and only they can fix it. And never fixed it Then you get a letter out of the blue a year after I emailed a 60 day cancel to them for 665.00 for a contract that automatically renews it self . It's interesting how during this scam they never call nor email you to let you know about this renewal . They just let it run while no contact with you during this scam and change late fees on top. What a scam. I saved my email of 60 day notice. Now dealing with there attorney. Great...

katie webb

The person (LL) that signed me up was super helpful

Josh Outman

I've been a member of this gym for 8 years. The staff is awesome. The equipment is always well kept and clean. The daycare is a bonus. I have always referred friends to family fitness and will continue to do so. You cannot beat the price and quality.

Thomas Anderson

I like this place. They update their machines, the place is clean, and daycare is in a separate room (unlike a lot of gyms where screaming kids just get to run everywhere). I've never had a bad experience with the staff. My friends go here, I would recommend it.

Daniel Ferris

*****DO NOT SIGN UP****** I have been a member of this gym for over 10 years had to renew my contract a few times.. gym is large and has everything you need but the issue is with the staff quite simply not following through. When I renewed my contract they spelled my name incorrectly so my billing was messed up for several months. During this time I spoke with their staff on several occasions informing them I was not being charged correctly only to be told they would take care of it over and over.. one day I walk in and someone new at the desk tells me my account is delinquent by somewhere in the ballpark of 300$... I was upset obviously and they worked it out to where I had to pay something like 80$ then my membership fee of 25$ on top of that to resume my membership. MORE RECENTLY I moved across the state to Detroit where they do not have any locations. I've been trying to CANCEL my membership for over 2 months now only to be told they need to contact "corporate" to cancel my membership.. Still no response..no email from corporate... all the while I am still being changed for my membership along with my wife's costing me about 100$ It looks like the next will have to be a stop payment and getting legal advice.

Karen Kennedy

I've been meeting with one of their Personal Trainers, Molly Barnett, for two months. She has been INCREDIBLE. I have so much more energy and I love having the added accountability of having a meeting with my PT every week. I wish I could see her every day--she kicks my butt! I really enjoy the women's only workout room. I'm still trying to build confidence and this gym is a pretty good place to do so.

Amanda Methner

Love working out here! Nice to have the woman's Fitness center

benjamin krymis

Terrible contracts. Be warned. Go somewhere else.

Allison Hall

You better read the entire contract beofore you sign it. The employee's don't know it, corporate doesn't return phone calls and they will screw you over if you ever need to cancel. They also talk down on people who leave bad reviews and get employees and friends to write good reviews.

Tayler Martin

I had gone to this gym years ago and loved going there. Everyone there had always been very nice, the facility was clean and spacious and they had a good variety equipment and classes. I had a very bad experience recently because I thought my membership had been cancelled after moving away and I found out I had a debt that was sent to collections. I honestly don't know what happened there, but calling and talking to the manager was very helpful. They helped me figure out a way to settle the situation. I am very happy with things turned out.

Nancy Muffley

Safety is not an issue with this place. It was 10:30 at night and the doors to back of the building were all propped open- AGAIN. The desk person is always hiding in an office. Nobody is ever at that desk in the evening. When they are there,... so unfriendly... Anyone can just walk right in. And they can walk in through the back NOW too. Complaints go unheard.

Glen G

I have been going to Family Fitness of Portage for several years and have been very happy with this facility. Friendly staff, great aerobic exercise equipment, weight lifting machines, and plenty of free weights. In particular, I recommend using Personal Training. The Trainers are professional, patient, and will most definitely help you achieve your fitness goals. I look forward to my PT sessions with Personal Trainer, Ryan. It is amazing the depth of knowledge he (and the other Trainers) has in order to address individual fitness needs. I recommend Family Fitness of Portage. The only negative I can think of is that sometimes a few aerobic equipment machines are out of order, but the machines do get repaired or flat out replaced with newer versions.

Otto Ottusch

Awesome place if your just swinging through or there to stay... Great staff good people

Sierra Johnson

very helpful I have been going here a few months now and have a great plan with my trainer. lost 22 pounds so far thanks to family fitness. I am a little on the plus size but no one here treats me different or looks down on me a totally judgment free zone. Thank you guys for helping better my life.

Hannah Hill

Great staff, kind people, clean facilities! A wonderful place to get in shape.

Joanna Bennett

I've been coming to Family Fitness since May and have had a positive experience with the staff, equipment, and environment of the gym! I would definitely recommend them whether you are trying to lose weight or are prepping for an athletic competition.

Dave Allen

I have been a member of this gym for over 6 yrs. The staff is friendly and the management team, especially Christy, has always been helpful when it came time to renew my membership. They gym is clean, and the equipment is great. If equipment ever breaks, they are quick to replace it. I have never seen anything sit broken for longer than a few days. They even replace the pads on their machines pretty regularly. The membership pricing is great considering the caliber of gym you are getting. I prefer to pay in full, since it is a little cheaper. There is no pressure to do this, it's just something I prefer to do. They also now offer 24 hr access which is great, since I work some strange hours. All in all, this is the best gym in the area for the money. I have recommended it to all of my friends, and I will continue to recommend it to everyone.

Expert Pandora

Nice atmosphere, friendly people, could do with some better equipment

Janet Luchies

The staff here has been really helpful and welcoming. Thanks to their support, I was able to train for and complete my first full marathon. I love the Women's Gym area and weight machines.

Zolushka Clean

DONT TRUST ALL THE POSITIVE REVIEWS. THEY ARE FAKE! THEIR MEMBERSHIP IS A TOTAL RIP OFF. if you want to cancel your membership, don't even waste your time by contacting their corporate office. Send cerifified mail to their local Portage address and that's it.

bharath kamineni

Easy to join, Tough to cancel its membership. Make sure you got membership details on paper before you join. It was bitter experience to me as i am not mentioned on notice period and other terms. They wont take cancellations at Portage and we have to go through its corporate center at Grand Rapids. Followups made me sick and poor.

Nicole Raupp

Need updated equipment, need new straight bar cushions that arent worn and defeats the purpose of using one. Like that they have a separate womens gym.

Zeke Hayes

Very happy since started coming here last year. They have a great selection of machines and free weights in a friendly envirlent. Staff is knowledgeable and helpful and give great high fives.

Cassandra Tuesley

I love attending family fitness. Always get a great workout in. The place is always kept clean and the staff is very friendly and helpful when I have any questions at all.

Erika Zavasky

Lee did a great job working with us to find the perfect package for us!

kaitlin horn

I have a trainer there and he is absolutely amazing, the facility itself is fine except for the wood boards by the windows are always covered in moister and the mirrors are completely fogged over which ive never seen in any other gym, but I deff feel a little lied to and that my membership was a con I had "won" a membership and everyone ive talked to pays the exact same fees as me, and if u r unhappy in any way its pretty much sol and they will take you to court over 20 bucks even from what ive heard, just be careful and know what you are getting into

Paolo Vito

I had just moved to the KZoo area and this was the first gym I had the pleasure of visiting. NOT ONCE did I feel pressured into signing up. The "lunks" or "meatheads" that show up at the gym regularly? Friendly. Every single one of them. the staff (when I didnt work here) was awesome, and helpful. I highly recommend Family Fitness. Good prices, amazing customer service, and no pressure.

Kate Nazar

They have a good list of classes but they have horrible descriptions and make it impossible for someone that doesn't have all the time in the world to go to the ones they're qualified for. They don't explain their contracts and I thought I was getting a 1 year membership and they locked me in for 3!!! Then they wouldn't own up to it and let me out early, instead the first time I asked I had to pay almost $380! Then they went through a lawsuit and I thought that they would then have reasonable termination fee. It's $250!!! If you move more than 35 miles out of the area, you can pay $75. That's a crazy difference! I would give them negative stars if I could!!! Absolutely hate this place.

Marjorie Burghdoff-Banks

I'd like to direct your attention to the Attorney General's Office of Michigan who has issued a Cease and Desist order against Family Fitness as of July 19, 2017. I stand by my 1 star rating; If I could give a zero rating I would.

Joe Pohlen

I am very disappointed with my experience dealing with Family Fitness personal training. I had entered a contract to pay $80 a month for 4 sessions and tried canceling after 3 months. Was told by Barry that I could cancel at the end and my sessions, if went unused one month, could roll over. Now that Barry has left, my contract has expired and I STILL get charged $80 a month. After multiple phone calls to the corporate office there is still NO ONE that can stop the auto deductions, no one to tell me how to schedule my sessions. I want my money back for my unused sessions ($880) Jan-Nov. This is ridiculous and criminal.

Moni Cohn

I am completed frustrated and dissappointed with the treatment received by the employees of this business. I joined over two years ago, and never actually spent one day working out there (I did receive the trainer trial and that guy was nice). I decided to go with Endurance because it was closer to my home and was free with my rental lease at my apartment complex. So, I was paying the $12.50 to this place regularly even though I never went there (contract is a contract). However, now that I have cancelled my membership, I am having more contact with them than ever before. I received a notice from my bank about more than $100 coming out of my account from Family Fitness Portage. When I call Ashley at the office she apologizes and assures me that withing 2 business days my money would be refunded into my account. It did not happen!!! here we are three weeks later and I have gotten nothing but the run around from Ashley. Now I am being told...for the first time...that there was an older system that took that payment out and now there is a new system and instead of Family Fitness apologizing for the error (my business is with them, not this so-called system) they are promising that the request was submitted and that I should see my money by tomorrow ... I HAVE HEARD THAT BEFORE. So, I am being told to call Affiliated Acceptance regarding my money that was taken out of my account for no reason by Family Fitness. I have spoken with my attorney friend about this and lets just say I could have handled this a different way and won, and with all of the run around, the time frame would not have been much different. I do not trust the business practices, customer service model or professionalism of this place and do not recommend anyone with any sense do business here. There are way too many other true "Family" focused gyms in this community to be dealing with this headache.

Randy Gray

The staff is friendly when I walk in the door, the gym is kept pretty clean, and equipment maintained. Stuff may break, but that happens everywhere. It definitely doesn't take long for it to be fixed. I see things being said about the gym smelling and stuff like that and it's just not the truth. I've been a member there for 3 years, even drive 5 times a week from Paw Paw to attend and have no intention of leaving.

stan saddler

Nice place

Eric Graham

Guest member, but this is one of the worst gyms I've ever been in. There's weights laying on the floor, there were broken machines (have been broken for months) but there was no sign that it was broken, the drinking fountain is missing it's pushbar, there's things falling off the base of the floor, old machines, and they charge $10 a guest hahahaha. Plus, it smelled like it wasn't cleaned in a while, which could be the case because the wipe down stations were empty

Isabelle Pettinger

Friendly staff, varied equipment, and a number of enjoyable and a reasonable price. Unfortunately, most of their equipment is out of order (or on the brink of failing) at any given time, their tanning bed bulbs are ineffective, and wiping down the equipment is an unenforced suggestion. As a runner, putting equipment that worked on layaway was a better use of time and money.

Keri Strong

I have been a member for nearly 5 years and have had tremendous success with this facility. I have read many naysayers who've had nothing but negativity for the place and all I have to say is, you are the creator of your own success. If you were happy with your own performance you wouldn't be looking for all of these small petty reasons to ruin such a great establishment's reputation. Many of the familiar faces have been members for many years and others like myself have been accepted, respected and supported in our attempts at gaining back our lives. Even I've had a couple issues with billing in the past and I've found that you get much further with a level head as my concerns have never had to go much further than a quick conversation with the manager. Most complaints that have been reported are simply lack of knowledge of the contracts you signed or your lack in understanding the importance of what those promises mean to the facility. The cancellation fee isn't a surprise as it is plainly stated in text on the contract that you are supposed to read. There are no hidden fees either. There is a well informed, well announced member enhancement fee that is expected a few months after joining that gets poured straight into maintenance, updates to the facility and new equipment. People are more likely to be upset that the gym doesn't take their contracts lightly and generally these people are the same people who drop out early based on the fact that they like the glamor of the idea of success but lack the understanding of the work it will take to achieve it. It's easy to aim your disappointment in yourself towards an establishment that makes success look so easy, however just because you chose to give up doesn't negate the responsibilities you agreed upon as signing a contract to become a member. Those agreements are your promises to help upkeep the facility. As members to a club, we all share those responsibilities. When you see broken equipment or an area of the gym that could use some extra cleaning, you can thank those who signed that contract agreeing to sharing those responsibilities with the rest of us. From that point, financial decisions are made that include that pledge of money and when you back out, that money is no longer there. Also it is rare for equipment to sit in a state of needing repair more than a couple days and its not multiple pieces of equipment. In a room that contains nearly a hundred cardio machines, 3 might be down at a time. Those who have spent the time to complain about this establishment and publicly bash it have taken more time and energy to do that than they have spent inside the facility using their memberships to better their health. No one likes to continuously pay for their own failures, few overcome them. The gym didn't fail you, you gave up. Some of you much quicker than others. Never Give Up!

Name Hidden

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette had to hit Family Fitness with a Cease and Desist for Collection of Excessive Cancellation Fees! Check Fox17 Problem Solvers for everything you need to know about this place. Their shady practices and exploitative "contracts" are practically criminal! I had to dispute so many charges from them with my credit card company because no one there will help me or give me a straight answer. All they do is charge for every hidden fee they can and then just dodge your questions. And even after all the fraudulent "fees," they had the nerve to refuse to cancel my membership! I had to close my credit card just to stop them from billing me! This place has so many hidden fees! There's a fee to start your membership and a fee to stop it, an "annual membership" fee, a fee to start your sessions with a trainer (on top of however much your trainer costs per session). Fees, fees, fees! I've called several times and asked to speak to someone but the "billing person" is always "out of the office." I've asked to see my contract paperwork which states what the fees are and when they're charged, but so far no one has been able to provide it. And of course no one is "authorized" to give out the owner's contact information. This place is one of the shadiest businesses I've ever seen and they will bleed you for all they can. Stay away from this gym!

Jacob Chamness

Family Fitness is an excellent gym where non-judgmental individuals work out while communicating with friends in the community. They possess an adequate number of functioning equipment such as treadmills even on the most busiest of occasions. Their personal training program is also fantastic, especially trainer Ryan Barnes. If you are looking for somewhere to work out just to slim down or to prepare for a sporting event of some kind, Family Fitness is the best place to go.

Nick Conley

I have been a member since 1994 this is by far the greatest gym in the city the equipment is awesome and they have many choices to choose from the staff is very friendly and helpful if you want to achieve a goal to be healthy and fit then this is the gym to go to

Kasey Goins

Love working out here but the wifi is sometimes down (difficult for those of us with limited data) and it's been ridiculously cold lately. But the staff are great and we've made so many friends that we just love coming.

William Sabin

Great place to work out

Rachel Guenther

Here everyday and it is like a second family if you are a regular! :) Everything works which is actually uncommon around here. Lol And the workers are personable and always greet and get to know you. They even have a fridge for your prepped food! ;)

Matt Major

This place is a joke. There is plenty of equipment but it is run terribly. I was snuck into a 24 month agreement when I was under the impression that I was signing up for a year. Everyone is paying a different rate for their monthly membership and equipment frequently remains broken. The main reason this gym caught my eye when I already had a free gym at my apartment is because it had a steam room. It remained broken for months. This is fine because that’s a hard project to fix, but when you repeatedly call and just get a runaround on the steps being taken to fix it and fake dates on when the work will take place, it gets old. Membership cancellation costs $200, unless you move more than 25 miles away from the club or an affiliate gym (good luck if you move to another city in Michigan), it is then $75 when paired with notorized lease copies, a utility bill or other pain in the butt copies of proof. Your money is much better spent at other gyms in the area, stay clear of this place.

Julia Hoffmann

I have been going here for a few years now and I don't have one complaint. The daycare is just great! the fact that the girls are going to school for early childhood development puts me at ease and I know my daughter is being cared for while I am caring for myself as well. I wish I could put 10 stars. Words can not express how much I love going here and how amazing the staff is.

Jalen Johnson

Christy, Andrew, Tyler, and Ryan are the most amazing individuals ever. They make sure I know exactly where everything is and help me get the best out of each of my workouts with professional advice. Favorite gym in the Kalamazoo County area!

Basically - this place is dirty, poorly run, and equipment needs maintenance or replacement. I joined this fitness center because they offered a "woman's only" area. While it is supposed to be women only, the male trainers are frequently in the area. The equipment is outdated and the area is constantly dirty (I noticed one used paper towel left at a machine was in the same place for over a week). The ladies room is quite disgusting and I don't know if the floor has been cleaned, ever, since I joined. Some members wipe the equipment off after use; most don't...it is disgusting to have to wipe off someone else's sweat. You would think maybe the staff could come around and clean off the equipment once in awhile. I was a member of Powerhouse Gym many years ago and they were ALWAYS wiping equipment clean. I can only imagine what the Health Department would find if they did an inspection here. A lot of members bring their small children into the workout areas (mostly during summer) and in fact one of the managers kids is always running around on the floor. It is annoying to want to use a treadmill and you can't because a 6-year old is "using it." I also don't think the staff is very helpful to customers. They seem to be most proficient at being on their cell phones at the front desk or hiding in their little office. I was there while someone was having a very difficult time. A staff member was right there - but did not offer ANY help to her. Another member and I ended up helping her. I mentioned it to the front desk and they did nothing. They also use tactics to get you to sign a contract on your first visit "or you won't get the same price if you don't sign now." And be SURE to read the fine print because what they tell you, and what you actually sign, are two different things entirely. This place needs new management.

christopher williams

They make you sign a year or more contract why should you have to sign a contract to work out the commitment is enough as it is

Alena Tychina

Be careful and read reviews before signing the contract. I'm trying to be objective and can say that the gym itself and classes are pretty good. They have a lot of equipment. I was satisfied with women room. However all positive experience goes away when you decide to close your membership. I have month-to-month membership. Firstly, I went there to cancel agreement in person but it turned out that cancellation was only possible after preliminary 60-day notice. Moreover they said they don't close contracts in Portage. They gave me an e-mail address where I had to send my cancellation request. Email address looked suspicious because one letter was missing. My suspicion confirmed when I got undeliverable response immediately after sending out email to that address. Then I fixed the mistake and send it again. After no response for 2 days I called Portage office, they told to wait for a couple of days. After several days I called again, they told that they were not dealing with contracts. we should contact Grand Rapids office via e-mail which had no any phone number. Also they suggested checking e-mail for undeliverable notices. Basically they just confirmed that the mistake was made deliberately. Next day I called them again and was told to wait till next week. I will keep my review updated. UPDATE: sent certified mail to local Portage address. Next business day I received response by e-mail and my membership was cancelled. so certified mail is one of the way to get rid of unnecessary subscription

Moara Matioli

I warn you, do not sign a contract with this gym. Their facility is ok. There's plenty of machines and a women's room. The big problem with the gym is when you need to leave. I honestly feel like they just want to trick people into signing a contract. If you must go to this gym make sure you sign up for a month to month contract and even then be careful. Unfortunately, we signed for a 3 year contract and it's been a huge pain trying to get out of it. Our contract didn't say anything about cancelation fees so to get out of our contract we have to pay the entire remaining balance. They made a "generous" offer to instead pay 65% of the remaining balance which ends up being 200$. We were loyal costumers of family fitness for two years and and even recommended friends to go there. They didn't take this into consideration when we wanted to cancel the membership. If you decide to come here just be extremely careful with what you sign and make sure it's a month to month. If you can avoid coming here even better.

Kally Graham

Cristi (manager at FF) has done such a great job of keeping the gym updated and new. I've been going to this gym for over 7 years and haven't had one complaint. Some have high expectations for a gym, I do, and I'm satisfied. Tuesday night Insanity is a great add to the class list they have already. The PT sessions are tough, but isn't that why you join a gym? Some people just can't be happy with anything and choose to complain... but if you're looking for a great gym with every machine you might need, under great management... this is it.

illimits fitness

2 Year member, fitness physique model and athlete, The staff are genuine cool people, and it has a very local vibe! They have so much space and equipment! The crowd is cool. This place is on the up and up! Check out instagram @illimits I record all my videos from this gym!

MARIO BARRON

Great place to meet your fitness goals!

Ashlee smith

Perfect sized gym! lots of room and everything I need to get a healthy body! wont be going to any other gym! family fitness is my #1 choice!

Gwen Willis

I have been a member of family fitness gym for 5+ years, loved the location, the staff, which all are amazing....last but not least, Their Leader General Manager Cristi Underwood; She is one of the most professional people I have ever met in a gym setting in a long time...if most Business Owner hired candidates with her communication skills, ethnical compass, and her abilities to the see the best in people; What an amazing work force we would have everywhere….!!!!

Zac Weber

I`ve been to several Gyms, this is by fat my favorite so far and have been attending consistently for 3+ years . Staff is incredibly friendly, as well as willing to work with you financially and to reach fitness goals. Reasonable personal training rates and incredibly clean.

MariJo Aguirre

Family Fitness is honestly the best gym I have ever belonged too! I have belonged to 3 different clubs before this and I would never go back! Its clean and has such an amazing atmosphere. the staff is extremely friendly and welcomes you in every time you walk thru the doors with such great enthusiasm. The make you feel like you are really part of their FAMILY. I have never had a bad experience at Family Fitness before and I have been here for almost a year now. I was a little skeptical at first just because this was my first membership that I paid for out of my own pocket, but joining was the best decision I have made fitness wise. Its not only a gym for people who are power lifters or who are training for a show. There are plenty of cardio machines and equipment for everyone. There are classes running everyday (yoga, body pump, step classes, ab classes) and they have a daycare which is very nice if the kids have a snow day but you still need to get a workout in! They also have 24 hour access which is wonderful for myself, who has a crazy schedule that is never the same, and people who are night owls and like to workout at 2am (I am one). Someone is always out on the floor to help you if you have any questions or even just to spark up a conversation! The locker rooms are cleaned every night and I almost always see someone out on the floor vacuuming or moping the floors. There are sanitizer bottles all around to wipe everything off when you are done and you can definitely tell that they maintain the business very well. If given the chance to sign up anywhere else I would for sure turn it down and keep my membership at Family Fitness.

Marlee Stufflebeam

This is a great gym to go to and the staff is super friendly. When I have a question I go to Christy. She is always helpful and gives great advice!

christopher cook

I had a difficult time with the stars. The gym is very basic, but is very large and clean for a lower budget workout place. I try not to go during peak times so I never have had to wait for aerobic or weight machines. It is open 24/7 if you need to workout at 4:00a.m. There really isn't any excuse not to work out. Unfortunately I have had so many excuses lately. This is a gym for everybody. There are older people, young students, in-shape, out-of-shape, male, female, every size. I have been a member on and off for 12 years, have been to Bronson and West Hills. Yes Bronson is "plush" but the price is very steep. They don't have as many aerobic classes either. West Hills also doesn't have as many classes and many of the special classes you have to pay extra. So I have returned many times, this time I am not leaving. Family Fitness is good for runners. What I sometimes do is check in and get my locker, then run on the path (it is close), and come back and use weights. Most people her are friendly and respectful, clean the machines, but some are not. I think this is at all the gyms. I am going to use yelp and Family Fitness to help me prepare for the Kalamazoo Klassic and Summer Safari Camp. I going to challenge myself to see how often I can check in before the Klassic.

A Google User

This gym has everything I need to continue the path I'm on. They have the friendliest staff ever. Thank you!

Delor

I love it! Great crowd. Great in between gym is your committed; but you don't want to join an expense health club. Staff is awesome.

Aaron Amato

love this gym! 24/7 access and Free weights! Its a REAL gym with REAL people :)

Julia VanderRoest

I do not recommend this place! I have been trying to cancel my membership for 4 months and keep getting charged and also keep getting the run around by their employees, including the corporate office. I have mailed the letter that my CONTRACT told me to do, called multiple times and have emailed their corporate twice and am still getting charged monthly. If you want to be stuck for life in a bogus contract and not have the ability to ever change, this is your place. If you want to have a gym that does what they say, follows their legal contracts, and has the level of customer service that you would expect, then you need to go elsewhere. This gym is scamming people.

Marina Chekhovskiy

Whatever you do, DO NOT SIGN UP FOR A CONTRACT WITH ANY FAMILY FITNESS!! They will sit there and tell you that cancelling is no big deal if something comes up, but they are liars. You WILL have problems. Even if your doctor prohibits you from working out. Got brain cancer? They don't care, give them $250 before they'll talk to you. In this day and age, we should not be having these issues. They are more of a scam than a caring health and wellness facility. Use your 30 day free pass and then get the hell out of there! Go pay for something more than just occupying space on a stair climber. Find a community that cares about you. Or ignore this and then pay a lawyer to drop a gym contract that you can't use. Extremely pathetic.

Anthony Davis

Love this gym. Plenty of heavy things to pick up and put down, friendly people and a steam room.

Milo Gringo

Dirtiest and least maintained gym in all of the Kalamazoo and Portage area. The trainer's are unprofessional and seem annoyed when asked questions. Fees are impossible to avoid. Don't sign up here.

RON ADRION

Fun clean environment for the whole family . Both management and trainers are awesome and approachable for myself and anyone who might have any questions or suggestions. Equipment is upgraded gym is clean .

Nice place

Family Fitness is a great place to workout. I love the atmosphere when I’m there as well as the 24hour access and child care. Above all else, I would absolutely recommend the personal training offered there. I have worked with both Andrew Anderlie and Ryan Barnes. Both have gone above and beyond to help me be successful and reach my goals. I would highly recommend this gym!

Ryan Lancaster

Great value

Trend Says

The gym is a great facility however they’re training program- PureCore is a complete scam. Trainers will not set up sessions with you and they will set you up on an auto payment plan that will continue billing you if you do not cancel (which they do not inform you about)

bailey hackett

Love these gyms! The fact that they have daycare has is super helpful for one of my friends who's a single mother. It gives her a chance to get a break and do something for herself for a couple hours each week. The staff are all super friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend Family Fitness.

Señor.Organic

Ive been going here sinse i could remember. My Mom has taught different classes here for many years and i remember going to the day care they offer for kids. Sinse those times im 22 years old and have competed in two physique shows. Ive tried multiple gyms and this one by far has the most equipment options and weights. Its also very Motivating because the people that workout there are trying to achieve there goals. There are really strong people that work out here and others just trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Regardless of why people are there everyone seems very friendly to one another. The trainers there are really cool and have even spotted me on bench at times i needed it for free! The Fitness Director there Andrew is a down to earth guy that will hook you up with a good trainer of his based on your Goals! Just like any business there goal is to make money so i feel its not fair to say that you get duped into a 3 year contract that you signed your name on. Based on the Remarks about that, that would be like me signing a lease on a house, everything going through, them moving peoples stuff out of the house, and me deciding that i want to cancel. Awesome Gym and people.

James Bergman

I don't understand why there are so many unfavorable reviews here. My experience at this gym since getting a membership haven't been nearly as poor. I hired a personal trainer and have been given some useful personal attention. The gym might not be the best, but it's rather affordable and provides what I believe to be all the equipment a normal person should require to get in or stay in shape.

Denzel Henderson

I love working out and I must say that this fitness club had everything I needed to get a great total body workout. The staff at the front desk was very friendly and made me feel welcome when I came in to check out the facility. I have seen a few negative reviews about the gym but after checking things out for myself I am happy with my decision to be a member here! The manager Christy always makes time to speak with me whenever I have a concern and she always is able to address any needs in a timely manner. I love the close knit feel in the gym and I would deff recommend this gym to all my friends and family!

Tim Minor

Make sure you read the fine print on this gym membership people. Want to throw some weights around? Sure, they got plenty of weights. Thumbs up for being a gym. But what about when you a) move, b)don’t have time to go to the gym anymore or c) get low on funds and need to tighten your budget ? Welp, here’s where you get into a real pickle as a customer and human being. Because, you can’t just call family fitness to simply cancel your membership after all. No, that’d be too easy. You have to send an email to corporate. So you call corporate, because that’s ridiculous, and they assure you they and no other employee can complete the simple task of canceling your membership; IT HAS TO GO THROUGH CORPORATE. But you wanna know the real kicker? To cancel your membership before 3 YEARS costs $165. You then tell the employee that the company has overdrawn your account three times now, which mixed with homelessness— doesn’t really make you want to go back to this gym ever. And guess what they do? They charge you for the months you haven’t paid the second you put money the bank, don’t cancel your membership and overdraw your checking account once again. Great business practices family fitness! Keep up the good work! Now, I have to rationalize not being able to save to put a roof over my head but instead, keep paying for a gym membersh I don’t use. Because that’s a necessity.

Altaf Motiwala

Been going to the gym for a few years on and off and have no issues with it. It's got all the equipment you could need, although some of it is dated but really not that big an issue. Take advantage of the personal training if you can do it, Ryan is great. Some billing issues primarily driven by the fact that it's handled by corporate and not the local office, which makes communication a bit disconnected. Given the prices, likely the best value in town.

Joe Maleckas

For starters, if there were more stars I would give them more stars. I've been a long time member for 10 years and running. I've looked at other gyms and none really compare. Plenty of equipment, great staff, makes you feel like you're welcome and motivation is through the roof. I pay less then any other place in here of my friends as well.

mic d

the place is clean and upgrades happen all summee

Iqbal Singh

I always get harassed every time by a manlet named tyler. It's a shame their staff does this to someone whose been a member since 2007, makes me wonder how they treat new members.

Sarah C

I canceled my membership back in APRIL of 2013. I was moving HUNDREDS of miles away. I paid the $79.00 cancellation fee, and sent in the proper documentation (lease agreement in another state) to some chick named Ashley. Months later, I'm getting notices that I've defaulted on my payments. I called, explained the situation, Ashley said she'd get it taken care of and stop the defaulted payment notifications. FOUR F**KING YEARS LATER I see a collections notice on my credit report from FAMILY F**KING FITNESS OF PORTAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!! This place is a joke. They're either thieves or f**king sh*tty business people who have no brains whatsoever. I have never been so livid at a business in MY LIFE P.S.-- I have saved the emails with Ashley George, billing manager. I have everything in writing.

Paul Highland

Here is a gym that cares solely on adding members and making money. Rude grumpy old man at front desk that cannot hear anything unless you raise your voice. The gym is always renovating due to investing in the cheapest carpet and upholstery as possible. Gym smells like a$$ and there is always standing dirt on the floors. I was a member there 2 years and and I finally got sick of being treated like a prospect instead of a member. Entering the gym is like being attacked at Art van furniture by salespeople that worst yet are not even in and do not know what they are talking about. I was also going to sign up for personal training but found out that there trainers there carry cheap online multiple choice certifications as opposed to nationally recognized NASM or Ace certs. Oh and there never ending promise of becoming a 24 hour club. Huge disappointment!! I will instead go pay 30.00 something a month some place else and be treated like a member and not an inconvenience. Save your money, everything is an up sell there:/

Joe Brewer

This gym is dirty and the locker rooms stink. The personal trainers here make fake reviews and ask their friends to do the same to boost their rating from what should be 2 stars up to 3.5. Cancellation fees are also through the roof.

Jim Obuchowski

This review will be updated as we go ..so we signed a 3 year contrct back in June 2013. We gave a written notice, certified mail, 60 days prior to renewal, emailed the center and the main office a copy of the letter. June was the end of contract, but we were charged today. Called center and told they cannot help but gave an email address to contact. They did not have a phone or address. Sames email i sent my notice to. So, here we go, we had no issues with the facility, but cancelling should not be this difficult. I will update this when we here back, email, from them and then give a worse or better rating. We are also getting ready to bring this to the problem solvers as they were on there recenrly for the same issue.stay tuned!!!! Okay, so I am happy...for now but we will see if I get charged next month. I received 2 calls clarifying that my request to cancel has been noted. So, the only complaint I have of today is, why did they not respond with a confirmation of my cancellation? Either way, Like I said before, we were happy with the Gym and the people there. It is a very nice gym and if we would go back, but only if we could get a month to month or 6 month contract.

Cee Cee

Great for body builders, the treadmills are mostly broken or close to it, the mats suck, and it isn't so clean. Wouldn't recommend for cardio and people trying to lose weight and tone up.

Lisa Smith

I am SO happy that I switched to Family Fitness! Not only is there an abundance of available equipment, but the staff is awesome and the community there is even better. Everyone is so nice and friendly and it's an amazing atmosphere and community to be a part of. Vito helped me with my membership and made sure I had everything I needed to be set up for success at the gym. He made my experience a very good one. I'm excited to be a member at Family Fitness and will definitely be recommending the gym to all my friends and family. It's the best one in the area and a great value! :)

Ray Davis

I love their equipment; I kinda wish the stream room was open later, but I understand for safety reasons. Other than that, it's a pretty good gym.

Joh E.

Very friendly staff, welcoming & helpful, great trainers and front desk people. Equipment is well maintained and locker rooms are well stocked & taken care of!

Matthew Vetter

Friendly staff and great variety of equipment!!

Kevin Fisher

Very nice place. Staff is friendly, but machines need to be repaired more quickly.

Haseeb Khawaja

I love my time in this gym so far. I came to loose weight and fat, I am getting there. I wanted to improve exercise timings and intensity, I have made significant progress. Ryan Barnes trains me regularly 2 or more times a week, he gives me more time always, his advice is very good and it helps improve productivity very well. My goals were belly fat and leg strength but Ryan has helped me work on other parts of the body as well. His guidance helps me do exercises at home as well. Other staff members are all very helpful also. Overall I do not hesitate giving it a five star rating, I not only will continue to come, I also recommend this place to others as well.

Kayla Vasquez

Horrible customer service. Make it almost impossible to cancel. Also i asked if we were stuck on a contract when we signed up and was told no, and thats the only reason we signed up. Lied to and now our money is being messed with given a number that is no longer in service to cancel WHAT A JOKE !!!

Joel Areaux

Incompetent!!! Canceled membership in June 2017... They stopped billing my card... then October 30th they hit me with a $44 charge. Tried talking to them. 3 times (twice on phone once in person) Kristi was supposed to get in touch...NEVER HAPPENED. I had to dispute the transaction with my bank. Check Fox17 Problem Solvers for a juicy story about this company.

Erin Sutton

This gym has a lot to offer! Can't wait to start!

Chase33427657658426814657346

If you choose to sign any contracts, read all fine print beforehand.

Jennifer Klok

Family Fitness is by far the best gym in the area! The people are amazing, always kind and happy. Great variety of equipment and the workout programs are fabulous. If you are looking for a gym and have questions, call Cristi Underwood. Cristi is the reason that gym is as successful as it is! Thank you Cristi!!!

John Mansfield

Love all the machines here now that one of the people that work here actually showed me how to use them! 5/5

Rex England

Been going for 4 years. Great place to work out. Is very busy during daytime hours though. Lots of equipment, and strong people.

Chau Morris

I think the facility is nice and easy to get too but terrible customer service!! I called to ask questions regarding my membership and the person who answered the call did not have any customer service manner!

Kelli Presley

Very friendly staff! My personal trainer Molly Barnett gave me some great work outs! I love the "Women's only" gym. They also have awesome group classes. I'm glad I joined!

Mike Taylor12

Family fitness is the best gym the Portage/Kalamazoo area has to offer with excellent customer service and lots of classes to offer. Wouldn't recommend anywhere else!

kurt zollner

It was one of the most positive experiences I have ever had at a gym. The staff was extremely friendly and willing to help with any questions I had. They have a huge selection of machines and or free weights. Lots of smiles

Shelley Edds

I've been a member of this gym for 3 years and have always had a great experience. It's really affordable and the child care is great for me to be able to have some "me" time while my kids play with friends. Cristi has been training me for a while and I'm seeing some amazing results!

Brian Urbain

Please be smart and do your research before getting a membership with this company. FULLY read the contract before you sign as the employee will tell you something different. Check out the BBB complaints about them. They have no corporate phone number to contact. Even after you fulfill the ridiculous membership contract they will procrastinate in allowing you to cancel the membership and continue to steal your money. They do not return calls and take weeks to return emails. They will tell you that the local branches do not have the authority to cancel your membership and give you the one email address used by their corp office. We had to cancel our debit card to stop them from stealing our money even though we have fulfilled our membership and went through the bogus 60 day notice period. After 60 days they will just prolong your cancellation as they try to automatically take your money. Based on the other BBB complaints I am guessing we are going to be dealing with credit agencies when Family Fitness reports us for not making our payments on time (even though we cancelled our membership). The mindless employees may be able to help you burn fat but not help with your membership. A sign posted at the front desk will tell you, you cannot cancel the membership for any reason at any time. Whom ever responds to the email at the corporate office will tell you they allow anyone to cancel at anytime as long as they pay off the balance of the contract. We have given this company years of payments without even going to the gym and they will not even have the respect to STOP TAKING OUR MONEY!!!! These complaints are the same for all the locations not just Portage.

Jess w

The gym is very welcoming. The manager christi goes out of her way to say hello ,and make you feel welcome. Which Is nice compared to other gyms. The price is great. Any issues with equipment not working were addressed immediately. Staff is very friendly and always there to offer help. Great family gym.

Max Walker

This gym is blew me away. It is hands down the best gym I've ever been a part of. I've tried a couple of the other gyms around the area and it is unparalleled in service and machinery. I love Family Fitness of Portage.

Gabby Triveline

By far the best gym I have ever been apart of! Super friendly staff as well as great aerobic classes and daycare center! I started off with a 30 day pass to try it first and knew it was the right place for me! One thing I really enjoy seeing every time I come in, is there are people constantly cleaning! A+++

Sarah Kozian

If I could give this gym 0 stars I would. They messed up my monthly billing, never informed me and are now trying to charge me $500 in late fees for their mistake. I never go, it's kind of dirty, lots of machines broken. Should have signed up for planet fitness instead!

Cody Martin

Great staff, great equipment, great atmosphere 10/10!

Ari O'Reilly

They make you email/call corporate to get out of the membership. But oh! You cant get out of the membership till like two years unless you want to pay “installation fees” $200+. Screw this place! I just want a basic gym membership for 20 per month!

Jill Brown

I LOVE THIS GYM!! I never felt more comfortable or supported in any other gym. Family Fitness has a women's gym where I workout. The staff walked me through MY specific machine settings (because I taller then average) and the machines proper useage. Cristi, the manager, is always available to answer any of my fitness questions. I have a bad back so I constantly have questions regarding movements and stretches. I live 45 minutes away and still I travel 3x a week to THIS LOCATION to because of the wonderful staff & the above par facility.
