Over the past two years I have come to love it here! They offer so many things - from a vast array of cardio equipment, to free weights, tanning, fitness classes, personal training, and even a sauna!!! Their staff is also friendly and welcoming, as well as accommodating to personal fitness goals! Claire helped develop a package tailored to my specific needs, which I thought was so awesome. They're reasonably priced and have a special feel to them, unlike the mega gyms that seem to be popping up everywhere these days.

ZERO stars if I could! Huge scam!!!!! They screw people out of money so bad. Once you cancel, they don't really cancel your account and then call you years later with a huge debt. They pass your information back and forth between different collections companies (with your social security number) which have reputations just as bad if not worse than them. Please, please save yourself the time/trouble/money and DO NOT joint these scam artists!

If I could give them zero stars, I would. I was basically tricked into a contract that I did not know about. First off, I "won" a two-year membership at a Griffins game. At this time, I didn't know much about Family Fitness before I went into this gym. I should have done my research before even setting foot in this gym. Mainly every review I read of the company was terrible, not just this location. I've heard of many people getting conned into this "free membership." I already had a membership at the time, but I'm a broke college student, so I'm obviously looking for the cheapest membership. I was helped by a girl who told me all of the benefits of the gym, and that it would cost $15 a month. There was no paperwork, nothing in front of me to read or sign. I asked if I could think about it and get back to her. She said no, if I leave I will lose this "amazing opportunity." I should have seen that as a sign. I ended up signing up for this cheap two year membership, not knowing this was a contract that couldn't be broken. This was never spoken of. I thought I was paying month-by-month. She told me there was a fee for the access card, which is understood. I ended up paying $30 while I was there. $15 for my first month, $15 for the access card. I signed on the pin pad for my card that I just charged. I ended up working out there (which I should have done first before signing up for any membership at all.) This place is garbage. It's not clean, the "women's" area is the size of a closet. I just hated the atmosphere and I had a really bad feeling about the entire place. The staff wasn't very nice at all. The tanning beds were gross. I left there thinking, what did I just do?? I ended up calling the next day to cancel my membership. They told me to email corporate. So, I did just that. They told me since I was bound to a two-year contract, that I would have to pay the full amount of $360 to cancel my membership. I pretty much had a heart attack. CONTRACT? What?? I was never told about this, I never read a single piece of paper showing I signed up for this, the signature I gave I THOUGHT was for my card that I just charged. I couldn't believe it. I tried to fight it. I contacted my brother who's a lawyer, and there was nothing to be done. They ended up emailing me this contract that I never saw when signing up for this garbage membership. My signature was right at the bottom. I was stuck. I ended up paying for a whole year and not going there ONE single time. I just canceled the membership this morning and paid $150 to cancel. Hey, I saved $30! Please, don't let them fool you. I have no idea how this company is still running. I have contacted the Better Business Bureau and I'm hoping they can do something about this scheming company.

I like working out there very clean and prices are good and it a 24hr gym for folks who have jobs. Ask for Aaron he very professional and will answer all your concerns. Aaron is very respectful of folks who are members or thinking of joining. And the owner Dan is very low key but will address any problem concerning your program whatever it might be. Host of trainers to help you along with your program. My own program take it easy but keeping the pounds off. Stop in and talk to staff can't go wrong.

I thought I was going to move to this area. I told the guy that there is a chance I won't be moving here. He told me "you have 14 days to decide if you want to keep the contract" on day 4 my mother needed me to move back home. She was diagnosed with 3 different types of stage 4 cancer. I figured with the compassion the first guy showed me. They would understand. Turns out I was wrong. I'm stuck with this contract for 2 years. They called me a liar. I was told I had to have proof I moved. A bill or a address change on my license. Seems how I was moving back in with my mom I never could change a bill but I did send proof of my address change. Turns out is wasn't enough and they needed over $300 to cancel it for breaking contract. They lied to me. I was told 14 days. Turns out that's not true. Never again! I can't wait until my contract is up and never pay them a dime again. Fitness 19! Was a better gym. Should have never left!

I love my trainer Chris W.! He is the best part of this gym. He is super encouraging and has helped me drop 2 pants sizes for my wedding (so far...) The gym has plenty of equipment for all types of clients and needs. I highly recommend the gym, but ESPECIALLY Chris!

Family Fitness is a great place to work out! The separate women's side is less intimidating to keep you coming back. Ian is one of the best personal trainers there! He has good work outs for everything and keeps you motivated to come back by switching up the workouts every week. I've lost 15 pounds in 8 weeks!

This is a great place to go and work out. My personal trainer Chris is absolutely amazing. He pushes me to do the best I can. I love going to work out. The equipment is very good and there is a large assortment of different things to use. I also love that there is a tanning bed and sauna. I would definetly recommend this gym if you are looking to get in shape. You should also take advantage of all the different classes offered.

They do not even deserve a 1 star. DO NOT get a membership here! It is not worth it, they lie and try to get as much money from you as possible. They try to reel you in with low monthly costs, but then have hidden fees and yearly costs. We were told that I could get the membership and that my husband could use it as a guest anytime, well every time he came in they did not treat him well and acted annoyed. Plus the staff told me two weeks after signing up that they wouldn't take kids under the age of 2. It has been nothing but a pain for me!

Loved it! A clean gym that has all of the work out machines you'll need to get a complete lift in! Very big gym giving you a lot of room to workout! Go in and talk with David Riley and he will hook you up with a very reasonable payment, and his customer service is phenomenal. Wouldn't lift at any other gym after working out here for so long.

I've been a member at this gym for 2 years now, and I've had nothing but a good experience. I love the fact that they have both a co-ed fitness center and an area for women only. There are plenty of machines to utilize and they offer 24hours for the co-ed workout area. Also, the staff have always been pleasant and helpful.

I am a member of Family Fitness for at least 10 years. I appreciate the staff who have been good to us. I have three memberships myself, my wife and our oldest son. I use the Sauna at the Plainfield location regularly and am glad they have kept it. I do yoga on Wed with Joan because Aaron Amato the manager asked me if I would take the class.I have recruited several of my friends. we have fun while staying fit.

Love this gym, love the staff, and love the atmosphere. You get the best of both worlds here, you have an upstairs and a downstairs. the upstairs is the more family friendly area with your cardio equipment, but downstairs is where the big boys play!. You get a wide range of dumbbells, squat racks, and benches.

There's a lot to like a this gym. Plenty of space and equipment upstairs and down to find exactly what you are looking for. There is also some very dedicated staff including Katie Glover. This gym is the best!! It has great equipment, an excellent staff, and an all around good vibe. The first day I went to check it out, I had a sit down with David, who not only took the time to answer every single one of my questions, but also showed me around, helped me figure out what type of membership would work best for me, without making me feel like I was being pushed in to anything. All in all, I felt like i was being treated like a person, not just another client. And that was truly the selling point for me. Now I travel 20 minutes out of my way, just to go to this gym. And its worth it!

I am so thankful for this awesome community. I love the friendly staff, the way management knows you by name and even the members cheer you on. The staff are super helpful. They give fitness and nutrition tips and advice on how I can break through my plateaus. I have been a member for nearly 10 years and have never been happier, especially after the recent renovation. The renovation gave the gym the physical facelift that it needed, and now it now has a modern look to it. With 24 hour access, it's always open. This is great because no matter how hectic my schedule is, I can always workout.

When I went in to sign a contract for a one year membership, the trainer changed the membership to 3 years after I had left. I ended up having to move from the area for work and when I went in to see what the early cancellation charge would be, I was then informed of this 3 year membership that I supposedly signed up for. I told them that I would pay for a one year because that was what I agreed to. They said I would have to get in to contact with the manager. After numerous, "I'll call you backs" and unanswered emails, I was finally able to get a hold of him. We agreed to canceling the membership but I was still getting charged $29 a month! I again, tried to get a hold to dispute the claim but he would not return my calls. I finally had to call my bank and cancel my card so that they would stop withdrawing money from me. J JOIN AT YOUR OWN RISK If you do decide to join here, please please please make sure you read everything. If they can, they will scam you.

I've always had a good time here. It's open twenty four hours, which is great because I work second shift. The staff is helpful when I have a problem. I've never had an issue with my contract and they were really understanding when I had to leave for a few months. My friends go here, my wife goes here. All in all, I would recommend.

Rating this one star because there is no option to rate zero... This review is about the company itself. This is by far the worst and most shady fitness company out there. I've had nothing but trouble with billing, extra charges, fees, etc. I've tried canceling my contract multiple times, which I originally signed up with as a "no term" because of my traveling situation. I continue to get charges over and over with no success of anyone calling or emailing me back. The BBB ratings for this company speak for themselves. And believe that a majority of the 5 star ratings on here are written by the staff and are fake. Take a second guess before you decide to sign your name in anything with this scam of a company. EDIT: For anyone having trouble getting in contact with their customer service, it seems if you leave a review, as such, they really care all of the sudden. They still haven't resolved my problem, but at least I received one email back...

He gave me a tour and worked his magic,signing me up for a year. Soon after, I signed on with Michael Papa, trainer extraordinaire, and my life changed. Michael has helped me learn to focus on my goals and how to put in the work toward reaching them, and supports me 200% every step of the way. I am thrilled to say that for the first time, I know I can achieve anything, as long as I choose to work for it. The entire staff here, including the cleaning lady, gets an A+ from me. I started at Family Fitness approximately a year ago when I moved to the NE side of town. The gym offers everything I was looking for in a fitness facility - cardio, weights, classes and tanning. Staff know me by name and are always friendly; Dave, Aaron and Natalie specifically. I have never had a bad experience at the gym and the price is just right. I love the variety of classes offered and really appreciate that I can utilize the Women's FitZone whenever I choose. Family Fitness really does feel like a family and I feel comfortable whenever I am there. If you're looking for a great gym experience, come on by and join!!

Literally so upset with you Family Fitness- my husband was completely scammed. He signed NO contract. Paid for one month. Was charged for 5 consecutive months. Despite calling, stopping in, emailing. Finally after a month of non-returned calls and the manger just never being in (uh-huh...), they called back and said we would refund your money. It will happen in 10 days. Now, it's been over 3 weeks. And funny, I just happened to see on the news this weekend that everyone you've scammed have come together and let the Problem Solvers take it on. WOW. Great business model. You must really be proud of your level of ethics and ability to handle customers. I don't know how on earth your business could still have the doors open, but until my husband is refunded, I will not rest. You need to handle your business- and do what you say you will do. It's insane to me- it's 2017- you should be in jail for a ponzi scheme. SO if anyone is even considering being a part of a ponzi scheme, go on and sign up and they can take money whenever they feel like it out of your bank. Good luck.

Just had surgery and medical issues with cancer.doctor told me joining a gym and exercising would help me,get back on my feet. Went in to talk,to someone about joining or trying for the free 30 day trial. Staff was very nice, but knowing this is a family owned business, I felt the staff pressured me into joining when i made it clear that I was there for info. I dont like feeling pressured, paid the 20 dollars towards the fee, and I haven't gone back due to how I felt leaving your establishment.

I have been a member at Family Fitness since September, 2014. They have very affordable contracts that includes all of the classes and the ability to use both the Women's Gym and the Family Gym. I also am able to take a guest with me each time, if I want to. This makes it really nice, as my husband often will go with me. It is like getting two memberships for the price of one. The staff is very friendly and helpful and they keep the place very clean. I have been working with Brittney as my personal trainer. She is really good at coming up with creative and new ways to build muscle and to keep fit. If you are bored with your normal routine, Brittney will help you change things up.

Stopped into your new Standale location to welcome them into the neighborhood (I was visiting family and as a fitness enthusiast, was excited to see a new workout facility in the area). Your staff gave me their sales pitch and after I explained to them that I live out of state and already have 3 nationwide gym memberships, I was told by your sales staff that maybe "I just can't afford the $13 a month". Lovely sales "tactics"-I'll be sure to spread the word to family and friends in the area.

My wife and I just moved to Grand Rapids about six months ago and wanted to join a gym that had flexible hours to meet our crazy schedules. We actually toured several gyms and then we stopped at Family Fitness. We did a walk through and had a great conversation with Aaron, the manager and was convinced to join on the spot. We even added a trainer to our package and he has been fantastic. Ion is a beast with the workouts in the gym, suggestions for our eating plan and motivation to reach our present fitness goals. The vending machine seems to almost always be empty, half the machines are missing pins, the floor near the dumbbell rack is broken which explains why 90% of the dumbbells are bent, there is usually equipment all over the place, and the men's bathroom smells horrible. The gym has a lot of potential but is poorly managed.

There are so many warning signs regarding this company! Not to mention the Class Action Lawsuit that has their name all over it. Hidden contract fees, blatant lies, and lack of communication has customers paying hundreds and signing up for lengthy contracts unknowingly.

This company has mastered the art of intimidating and scamming their client's. Make sure you keep all your copies of the contract you sign if you decide to join this company. They tend to fill in blank fields once they file your paperwork. Totally illegal. Their reviews with the BBB pretty much sums it up. Stand up and DO NOT agree to their bogus attempts to try and collect money from you once your contract expires. And make sure you dispute all claims they attempt to present to the 3 major credit bureaus.

Its clean and I enjoy the fact that they have a woman's only area for me to work out in! I also love the fact that they have child care available for my children. This gym is dishonest! I went in because we had won a free membership. They told us that they us that there was a maintenance fee. We signed up thinking it was a good idea and signed a 2 year contract, but felt intimidated every time we went so we wanted to cancel. They had us send their HQ an email so I did so and they told us that we had signed up for a 36 month contract. I replied and asked if I could get a copy of my contract because I couldn't find it and had never heard a reply. Then I checked my checking account recently and they took out an extra $50 for an unknown reason. I finally found the contract we signed and apparently if they have your account on file they can take money out at any time for any reason. I do NOT recommend this fitness facility to anyone. They told us we could freeze our membership and we called and told them we were going to freeze the account because we were going away for a couple of weeks. They did not freeze our account. Worst place ever. If you want to get screwed over, this is the place to go. They lie and hide things from you.

I have been a member at Plainfield Family Fitness for more than a year, and have been more than pleased with the results I've seen since I started working out here. Last year, I trained with Katie Glover and cannot say enough good things about her and relationship dynamic that has been established. I am certainly not a gym rat - and have sworn at her on more than one occasion :) - and she took my attitude in stride and kept encouraging me with kindness. Even now that our sessions have ended, she's quick to keep encouraging me every time she sees me at the gym. She is a gem of a trainer, and I'd recommend her to anyone looking to shift into a lifestyle of self-care. They facility itself is basic, and offers all that I was looking for in a gym. But, I have to say that I'm most pleased with the customer service offered by the Plainfield gym itself and the corporate headquarters, whom I had to call when I had an issue with my payment last month. They were quick to resolve the problem, and more than kind when the issue was my own fault. For the last year, I have been more than pleased with the time I've spent at the gym. And I'm glad to have more time to keep going there.

Despite having read negative reviews about this gym online before signing up, one of the staff members, Jeff Burdick, reassured me that policy changes had been made and that there were no hidden strings attached like the reviews had said. He and the rest of the staff here have absolutely followed through on that statement and in the past two months that I’ve been going here, I’ve noticed a significant increase in my weightlifting abilities and overall physique. I would highly recommended signing up for this gym as it’s an affordable price for quality equipment and a staff that doesn’t shame you for “gymtimidating” other people by actually making progress (cough Planet Fitness cough cough). I haven’t been to the other locations yet, but the Plainfield one has been more than accommodating and encouraging!

Member here for more then a few years. Love the fact they have more equipment and free weights then any other gym in grand rapids. This is why I am here. But, I have been screwed on 3 different contracts with lies. Even when they show you a copy of your contract filling it, they change it behind your back. I have personally reported them to the BBB. The locker rooms are also usually pretty dirty.

When I signed up Fit Zone for women was supposed to be open Sundays until 3pm. I arrived Sunday at noon. Doors locked, lights off, no note. No times listed anywhere, no one has EVER answer their phone. They have over charged my Debit card 8 times in the last 1.5 years..When I email asked why they said Late Fees...It's auto deducted. I called my Credit Union and they stated it was never refused, paid when submitted. I requested phone calls, they NEVER answer their phone, to clear up. No calls yet. I believed I signed a 1 year contract, turned out to be a 3 year. Discovered the error with 8 hours...No reply via phone call, email. Refused to change my contract to what I requested. They charge in addition on monthly, an annual $44.00 fee for maintenance, yet equipment is never updated and hours/days open are apparently cut without notice to the members.

I've been here a few times, but it's always been a good experience. They have plenty of equipment to use and the staff has always given me prompt service. The classes are fun and run by people who know what they're doing. Yes, I'm charged a yearly enhancement fee, but from what I can tell, they use it. I see new equipment in there every time I come. She asked me a wide array of questions to help best identify my personal health goals and needs! She truly went above an beyond! Scam! They scammed me into a 3 year contract by telling me it's a one year. They told me I'm only going to pay $25 /mo and instead they've been charging me $44! This facility has the oldest equipment I've ever seen and they don't clean the equipment nor do they provide anything do to clean the equipment once you're done using it. Most of the reviews below said the same thing, they were all scammed! They also were on Fox News for scamming people. Save your money and do not go to this location! Family Fitness is a terrible company. They scam people! The people are rude and have heard members swear loudly while working out. Don't believe in the 30 days free or what ever they offer.. cause it's not true! I worked there and would know. The managers treated me like I was a bother to them. I am a new member at the Family Fitness in Grand Rapids. I joined because I just moved back into GR and was looking for an affordable gym. First, their prices are the best. I am a college student and when Aaron (the manager) was offering me their deals he could tell I was hesitant because I am a college student. He did anything and everything to make me feel comfortable. He was very honest and straight forward. Second, yes we all see the google reviews about the scams and the staff. However, I'm here to say that I'm going to the gym to work out, not for the bright attitudes of the staff. So far, everyone has been nice and approachable. I was once a member at another fitness center and was never treated like gold. Don't care. I actually addressed the scams with Aaron. He was so professional about it and put the uneasy feelings to rest. READ THE CONTRACT!!! and if you have issues he will go over it with you. It says IN THE CONTRACT that there is a fee when you cancel. I don't know why you would cancel anyways. I have no complaints, if you read the reviews and get nervous, I'm here to say I am one satisfied costumer.

Do not waste your time or money. When signing up i was told I could cancel at any time, now I come to find out that the shady gentlemen committed me to a 2 year membership?!?! Never once showed me what was being initialed just would pass me the electronic signature pad and keep the screen facing away from me. To top it all off, now that I've learned about this and have raised concerns the corporate manager will not take my calls or return them. Find another gym for your own sake, there are plenty of cleaner and more professional gyms in grand rapids.

Avoid this place. I was intimidated into renewing my PT contract only to have them fire my trainer and reassign me to new one--without asking me. Twice. The gym itself is cheap but the staff is unhelpful. Many machines are falling apart and the place is not up to code for cleanliness and there was shattered glass in the basement. It's saving grace was the trainer I had and they fired her for speaking out about issues at the gym.

I've been a member of Family Fitness for just over a year now, and have to say they are treat their clients great! They offered me an affordable contract, worked with me on payments when I was struggling financially, and have always been full of advice when I ask a question. They were so on board with helping me get to my goals, that when I asked for a personal trainer they set me up with Mike who knows exactly what he's talking about and aligns perfectly with my views on bodybuilding. It would take a lot to get me to switch gyms; even living 40 minutes away, I make the trip just to work out here.

I have enjoyed working out at Family Fitness on Plainfield Ave. I've trained with Eric and he was excellent at getting me the results I wanted. My main goals were to become more healthy (workout regularly and eat healthier) and more toned. I wasn't familiar with using weights and I have learned a lot since working with him. Eric can sometimes come across a little intimidating. He's a big guy! But in all honesty he's very down to earth, is great at listening to your concerns and providing you with a workout that fits your individual needs. The trainers at Family Fitness are all great and very friendly. I would recommend checking this place out if you're looking for a training.

Located conveniently on the NE side of Grand Rapids; the gym has all my fitness needs. The main floor has a wide selection of free weights, machines, and cardio equipment. Downstairs, there are additional free weights and a large room for daily cardio classes. Also on site is a dry sauna and tanning bed. The best part is they recently renovated the locker rooms! Regardless of your fitness goals, this gym has everything to help achieve your needs. With super friendly staff, motivating trainers, and 24 hour access; I would highly recommend for any fitness enthusiast!

Buyer beware. I joined January 2015 and signed up for a 3 year membership. As they had the lowest gym membership rate in my area. The gentleman who signed me up talked me into getting a personal trainer for an additional cost. It was agreed that I would start with the personal trainer in May 2015, due to it being my final semester of college. Unfortunately, March 2015, my son was diagnosed with cancer and hospitalized. I contacted Family Fitness to cancel the personal trainer that I hadn't ever seen, but have paid for, and was told I couldn't. I was given the runaround. Told that once I've paid there were no refunds allowed. They had zero compassion. Basically, I was forced to keep the personal trainer. EVEN THOUGH, I had never met or worked with the trainer. It was a very emotional time for my family and this left a horrible taste in my mouth. The money that could have gone towards my son's cancer treatment was being used for a nonrefundable service. So I went ahead and did what I could to use the personal trainer after I graduated in May 2015. I never did get all the sessions I paid for. Mainly due to staff changes at the Plainfield location. I rated this a 2, because I was still able to get some good workouts in over the past few years. It is a gym and you get what you pay for.

Good equipment and a great atmosphere, however this potentially amazing gym has been ruined by poor management and greedy people who run the place. The managers and upper level staff will use strongarm sales tactics to force you into sales agreements which you will poorly understand and likely not read because you trust what they say about the contract agreement... and that would be ok if they were being honest, but they aren’t. They mislead you into what you buy and continue to apply this misleading policy to everything in their gym. The giveaways, the cancellation terms, the customer service, and anything that involves you keeping your money instead of if being given to them. There’s a very good reason that there is a class action lawsuit against them and it’s because the gym is managed by money-hungry meatheads that know nothing about ethical business or customer service or even basic politeness. Never associating myself with them again. And did I mention that I used to work there?

Unless you want to deal with some of the most unprofessional and shady people, DO NOT GO HERE! I signed up for a membership because I was supposed to get a discount because of my apartment complex (and ended up getting charged more) and canceled a couple months later after going to the gym one time. When I went to cancel the extremely unprofessional manager was rude and kept trying to talk me into staying, but eventually had me sign an electronic pad saying I canceled. MONTHS later I keep getting calls from the corporate office saying they don’t have a record of me canceling and they apparently charge a $100 cancellation fee (which I was never told about when I thought I canceled months prior) and now they’re hounding me to pay this cancellation fee months later. DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!

Family Fitness on Plainfield is a great value! They don't have all the bells and whistles like the other, more expensive gyms, however they have everything you need to get a good workout. They have recently done some renovations that have really improved their image. The front desk crew are very friendly and also helpful. I am not a big fan of fitness classes, but they offer a lot of them! It is very convenient to have 24 hour access as well. Some things that need improvement include getting more treadmills, they are used the most by far and it is often that I come in at peak hours and can't get one the entire time I'm there. There has also been several times where equipment is broken or not working properly; so being a little more proactive about maintaining and caring for equipment would help. They could really use some new cable machines as well, as they are getting sticky and sort of "out of shape." Overall though, they do a great job keeping it affordable and providing customers with what they need to get a good workout!

I don't like how I was mislead about my pricing. And the no contract deal is bull. I tried to cancel my membership and was told I had to buy out by paying over $300. The $10/mo no contact business is bull too. I read through everything and it's not all in writing. I was told to have a personal trainer it would be one price then they double it when payment due. They refuse to refund money. Corporate phone number just rings and goes to voicemail. You have to contact then through email which can take days to respond. Think long and hard before going here... unless you plan to be stuck for some years.
