Made my first venture to The Colonial Heights AmFam on 02/22/17. I'm a frequent gym goer at Midlo, VCC, Short Pump, Mechanichsville, and Williamsburg, but this was different. The whole place stinks like body odor. As for the pool it was a disgrace. The main pool had yellow algae splotches on the floor, no chlorine in the spa. Chemical imbalance! The shep hook (the crescent shaped blue hook that pulls the rescue buoy) was hanging off unsecured without a clip or a screw as was the flat skimmer net. I think it's a major safety risk to not have it setup properly. Other concerns are the cracks in the plaster in the main pool near the steps and the rigid parts of it in other places.

Best gym in the area! Best equipment for the serious lifters or beginners! Separate leg room you can squat without gym traffic moving behind you. There’s always someone there who is knowlagable and can hep with what you need. Lots of supplements and preworkout drinks! If you can’t get it done there it can’t be done!!!

Very friendly gym with many additional amenities including pool, sauna, hot tub, and tanning beds. Equipment always functioning and awesome open gym area for stretching, abs, and plyo. Only negatives are cramped weights area, lack of towel service and somewhat limited class selection. Really liking it so far!

I am very happy with AmFam. Coming from another gym in town this was like a breath of fresh air, and I wished I had known how amazing this place was in comparison to the other gym. The facility is clean and the staff is constantly wiping equipment and the facility down. There is an adequate amount of equipment, and the class instructors are AMAZING. The Kids Zone is fantastic the kids are active and I feel like my child's safety is a priority. The kid zone's instructor to child ratio is small so all kids are monitored at all times. They offer tanning in beds that do not look like throw back beds from the 70s, nor do they smell like burnt skin. Every single staff member is friendly and welcoming, as well as the other members who patron this gym. I highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a new place to work out. It is definitely worth the money.

It's a great gym and all but if you don't have the funds to keep paying the maintenance fee when nothing is fixed and you signed a lease. Youu just signed your soul to the devil there is no backing out and that sucks. I don't go and its packed all the time and the only way to cancel is moving 25 miles away or get a form from them to bring to a doctor to prove you can't work out. Soo yes like Chad said look elsewhere before you get locked into 3yr plan youu can't afford nor get out of. Like golds. But if you do go to someone that explains that to you..

This is the best family orientated gym I've been to they offer child care as part of your membership most parents can't afford to pay extra money for childcare while they workout the gym allow you to be able to do at a affordable price the staff is friendly and helpful you won't regret joining!!

I was in the colonial heights area for a week of training with the DoD. I needed a place to workout that was close to my hotel and this gym was right next door to the Hampton. I walked over and spoke with the friendly staff who directed me to their head Salesmen which I believe was Steve. He was extremely nice and was able to work it out where I could train at the gym for the week. I will be traveling to the area again for further work related training in the future and this is where I will be going for my fitness needs. I encourage everyone to give this gym a chance and ask to speak with Steve about your membership and what the gym has to offer! Thanks again for everything!

The facilities are nice, the people working the front desk are pretty friendly, but the gym is overpriced and the manager who signed me and my family into a year long contract LIED to me about the terms. I am now stuck paying $100 dollars a month for a gym I don't go to very often, mostly because my child hates going to the childcare center. The staff in the daycare center at Colonial Heights American Family Fitness will most likely ignore your child and do nothing to make them feel comfortable, even if your child is crying or anxious at drop off. I have literally seen six staff members in the daycare, and not even one of them was talking or playing with a child. The kids were all watching tv while the staff was talking to each other. And the "classes" they offer for kids are a joke. My son went to the karate class they offered and "Master" didn't even acknowledge my child with a 'hello.' Not even an introduction to make my shy child feel more comfortable during his first class. You would think that a gym that charges a full adult price for one child would offer better care than this I mean, $100 a month for this? Rude childcare workers and a decent gym, but nowhere near worth what AmFam charges. I can't wait until some competition opens in the area. American Family Fitness will be forced to care about it's members or experience a great loss of revenue.

Staff was slow and unfriendly. Took 30 minutes to get registered as a guest and the vibe was very off. I don’t want to say racism was a part of it but no one else in the time it took to register had an issue. At the end, the reason it took so long is bc they kept misspelling my name which they had my photo id in front of them. Didn’t apologize, would never come back to this building.

Awesome experience at this gym. Was in town for a corporate meeting for a couple days and really enjoyed this gym. Very clean, staff was very friendly. Dealt with Steven, great guy, who carried himself very professional. Also the guy at the snack bar, forget his name, was very cool and personable.

I use the basketball court, the stationery bicycles, the pool, hot tub and sauna and the fitness machines. I like them all. I even appreciate the improvements made to the men's locker room and showers.My only request is that you would return lounge chairs to the pool deck and decrease the number of park bench seats. Many of us like to relax after exiting the sauna, pool and hot tub.

As an upcoming powerlifter I am sad to say that this gym is lacking. The staff may be exceptional, but that doesn't make up for the missing deadlift bar. The current equipment is okay but there are hardly any clips. The addition of a deadlift bar would be great to many lifters. Overall this is a great gym that has the potential to be amazing.

Horrible the gym is dirty and dark and the patrons made me feel uncomfortable. I tried to cancel my member ship because I moved away from the area. I mailed the letter required and no response!!! They have been charging me for six months!!! Avoid this place at all cost they are crooks!

I love this gym so far. The one in Colonial heights is the closest to me. I've been going to this gym and its other locations for close to a month now I think. Everytime I go, not only do I get a good work out in, but I get friendly greetings all around. The one who helped me sign up, Steven, even checked in on me when I hadn't showed up in a week due to recent schedule complications. Everyone at the gym treats you like family. There is a guy named Jon at the cafe who is super awesome and makes the BEST shakes. I never thought I'd be able to find that family feeling anywhere else outside of my old gym Reds in Lafayette, Louisiana... yet I found it here at the American Family fitness center. Anyone in the Virginia area, I would highly recommend considering this to be one of your gyms to go to.

The staff is super friendly and the facilities are clean. The only negative is that some of the patrons act like they own the place. I’ve seen kids in the pool area who were allowed to scream at a high pitch and in that echo chamber, it’s excruciating. Others leave floats and kick boards littering the pool. How hard is it to put things away? Today, the fitness class was backed up all the way into the first lane so there was no swimming behind them. When another lane came open, I started to enter the pool, when a gentleman informed me that it was HIS lane. He’d merely walked away to get some equipment (which we placed on the side of the pool without using and swam off). Rather than start an argument, I just left. I’m sorry, but I thought we were supposed to share lanes during peak times. Maybe a sign stating that needs to be posted in the pool area. We have the slide show showing safety and etiquette for the rest of the gym. How about one for the pool? Also, maybe have a staff member walk through occasionally.

Positive: Staff is friendly, has a pool and decent classes. My frequent experience : NUMEROUS machines "out of service" and remain that way for long periods of time. ( I have photos and dates but unfortunately can't post to a review). One day last week, I counted six treadmills out of service and two that skipped once over a speed of 6.5. I could continue with other factors such as personal safety in relation to proximity of equipment. Conclusion: This location seems to be the red headed step-child of all the American Family Fitness locations with out dated, worn out and constant breaking equipment. The gym membership fees are higher than any other gyms in the Tri-City area and encourage reviewers to check out other locations or the other several gyms in the area that provide the same service at a lower cost. I've been a member for many years and this location is at the worst that I've seen it.

I love this gym, there is always someone in there that can help me learn and train! Never have to wait on a bench, squat rack or free weights. They have stuff for isolation, hypertrophy and all around strength gains. They also have a sauna and tanning bed for the more serious lifters. They have wraps, whey protein, energy drinks, protein bars and belts!!!

So I walked in asked a simple question. How much for a day pass.. she says well, first day is free for non members. Subsequent days were 20 dollars. She then asked if I would be interested in a membership. I told her I still lived in Texas but liked what I saw online as far as they're facilities go. She then, with a look of disbelief on her face goes to get the member services person, returns, to stock I ask, who is this? Why are we needing him? I'm sorry. I just want to lift Jesus. So he finally comes out and his first question to me.... how can I help you.... I said I want to work out. He says, work out... well do you want a membership cause there is a 20 dollar fee for non members.. I say yes the second time, right? He stutters, well I can make that be the first visit of I want. I say, thanks for nothing I just wanted to work out im going back to Petersburg

Hello I usually don't like to post anything. But this time I had too. I'm really impressed with this young lady who works at the front desk, night shift her name is lissette, wow! Her energy, her smile, ( long shift for that positive attitude) She is amazing, she makes sure everyone there is comfortable, and on top she CLEANS! I don't see her on her cell, or sitting down. ( I usually see employees either sitting down, or on their cell phones at the front desk) but lissette always seems something to do. GREAT CHOICE ! Great job lissette, thanks for your service!!

Military should beware of this place. In fact, everyone should. They are the "Family" that takes money and you never see it again. I was lured into joining because I thought the contract was 6 months. It is a year. After about 3 short months, I realized that this gym would not fit into my schedule (yes, it is 24 hours...let me elaborate). I am a single parent (yes! They have childcare...I will get there). By the time I am off of work I get to spend roughly 2.5-3 hours with my kid. I would take him to the gym for about an hour to an hour and a half, but he would cry. He did not really click with any of the caregivers. If he cried for more than 5 minutes, they would come get me. Guess what my 2 year old learned? "If I cry, I get mom." But, that is their "policy." I have repeatedly asked out of my contract. I agreed to pay a cancelation fee. Yet, I am charged $68 every month for a gym that feels like the creepy side of the family you are forced to see once a year...They refuse to let me out of my contract because it was for A YEAR...Not 6 months. The ones that took your money and you never saw again. Stick to Golds Gym. MILES cheaper, and great childcare. Or Planet Fitness. Anywhere but here!

I just joined this gym (I'm diabetic and needed to get back in shape) . I really like the atmosphere and the staff are very well and treat you with respect . Everyone , well rounded athletes , older senior citizens , different nationalities , body builders and regular folks trying to get in shape are here .. I was a little iffy on the price , being some gyms are cheaper , but they kinda end up being worth the price when you look at what they have to offer . They have a juice & supplement bar that make health drinks . During one of my workouts I had a low blood sugar episode in which I just went to the bar and they gave me juice (free of charge) to get me back right and explained that if I had any issues , to come back and get more . To me , this is a well rounded place ....

I started coming here during my BOLC back in 2014. It was only right when I got here for CCC that I signed back up. I love the variety of machines, and I definitely enjoy their fitness classes...you'll definitely get a workout. Their recovery shakes are also amazing. A little pricey depending on what you're used too, but I think this fitness center is worth it.

Staff and gyms members seem to put their egos to the side and greet each other with kindness and it makes the gym experience much more user friendly. The equipment is well kept and the new pool area according to my grandson is classy. I think once you enter this facility you will be hooked. The prices are reasonable but your health is priceless, sacrifice those extra fast food meals and the dues will pay for themselves.

I will never return to another American Family Fitness Gym. I have been trying to get out of the contract for months. I am Military and have not been in the facility for a few months. It was very hard to get out of the contract even with orders. The Manager wanted to see leave paperwork from the commander as well as official orders. I am still getting charged the monthly price.

This is a very nice gym and the staff is fantastic, however, their pricing scheme is problematic at best and sketchy at worst. I had several issues with the pricing model, and was unable to get any of this money back.

I used to use this gym for lap swimming and have had to move to another location. This gym has no oversite of the pool area and the staff allow non lap swimmers to dominate the lanes supposedly dedicated to lap swimmers. Even worse the kiddie pool is not monitored and kids are screaming and yelling (in an indoor pool area) while adults are trying to exercise. The staff make no effort to enforce the rules.

So first of all I know a lot of people that work out there. I feel bad about an earlier review by Penny Norton. I'm the type of person that will talk to anyone, I don't care about their weight or color. If you go into the gym and not worry about what everyone else is thinking about you it makes things easier. I understand sometimes that's hard to do. Some people may seem stuck up but really they just want to work out and get home ( that being me). I try to smile at everyone so that they know they are welcome. Salesmen are salesmen, just know what you want when you go in and don't let them talk over you ( ask as many questions as you need too when signing a contract) Overall I like the gym bc I don't feel like its so crowded that I can't work out. The one thing that I do not like about the gym is the young teenage children running around. I don't think that a 12-16 year old should be allowed to run around on all the equipment. I think its great that they offer child care I have friends with kids so I get it. I just feel like there should be more structure or rules for the young teenagers. Overall I would prefer to go back there then any other gym.

I love being a member of American Family Fitness in Colonial Heights. It has a great selection of equipment, an indoor swimming pool, and plenty of challenging fun group classes. It has some unique features which makes AmFam my favorite gym: Child care that my one year and and two year old love going to! They even watched my one year old when she was an infant. The locker room is brand new! I wasn’t able to take a picture because I didn’t want to be that creep taking pictures in the locker room, lol. Although I briefly considered because it is so nice. I think the gym will give you a tour if you wanted to see it. The cleanest gym I have ever seen. It actually smells good, no joke. Every time I use the locker room, I think, I must have been the first person to come in since it has been cleaned. The staff is so nice. especially the people in child care, they are like baby whisperers. Highly recommend.

I've been going to this gym for almost two decades. It is a little pricier than other gyms but it's worth it for the classes and the pool and the 24-hour access. I have found the employees and instructors go out of their way to keep a clean gym and make the workouts enjoyable. The parking lot is well-lit and I have no fear going at night.

My first experience with childcare was horrible, provider had not changed my son in 2 hours, and was provided with the care bag with all his necessities. My second experience was with a representative name Taylor Hackley, she failed to cancel my contract after i gave her written notification within 3 days to cancel the contract (specified in contract), via email as she requested! and after speaking with her on the phone on more than one occassion. I text messaged her to inquire as to the reason she did not cancel my contract, she failed to respond to all messages or take accountability (shocking to say the least). I called to speak with her about the matter, and she forwarded me to her manager. I kept wondering if there was a miscommunication or misunderstanding, why did she not clarify herself at any point? Afterall they took money from my account without my authorization! Ultimately i realized there was not any good intent behind her actions. I refuse to do business at this location. Military and Civilians, beware!!! of this facility and the way that they operate, have everything documented!!!, and i would reccommend not to take any "special offers or favors" from this team. Very sketchy and a lack of integrity and accountability!

I️ LOVE this gym. I’ve had to switch to water fitness and can’t say enough about the large variety of classes and the excellent instructors. Tanya really gives me a workout with Aqua Bata and Aqua Kombat. Tracey’s Aqua Zumba class is soooo much fun. The protein shakes are excellent. There is a large variety of equipment and the place is very clean. I’m always seeing someone cleaning no matter what time of day I’m there. The money is more than worth it!
