REVIEWS OF Stone Summit Climbing Atlanta IN Georgia

Icrushboulders .

This is a great gym, my only reason for not giving it 5 stars is the recent change in the bouldering grades. I know grades aren't a big deal and we all climb for the love of it. That being said, some climbers train so they can climb harder routes, and especially at the gym, the only way to measure progress is by grades. So the grades for the bouldering used to go by increments of 2 grades, like blue was V2-V3 and red was V4-V5. Recently the grading got changed to a 3 tier system, so a blue is now V2-V4 while a red is V4-V6. This new system just makes things more vague. I understand grades are subjective and a matter of opinion, but still we grade to the best of our knowledge so the climber has an idea of what he is about to attempt. As I mentioned before, it is also nice to know how you are progressing. I asked one of the employees about the reason for the change and they said that it was "for the love of climbing, so that people aren't that focused on grades." So why grade at all then? It makes no sense. I've talked to many climbers there and no one likes the new system.

Great staff, great variety of routes for all levels. There is a reason why it's so popular with adults of all ages and seems to have plenty of options for kids too. I've been a member on-off for a couple of years and even though the gym has only risen in popularity there are still plenty of opportunities to come when it's not as crowded. Even when it is packed, fellow climbers are usually friendly and courteous so it's still fun. I also enjoy the fitness equipment upstairs. They had a sign up saying they're about to bring in new treadmills. To what someone said about chalk in the air, I haven't had that problem but I'm glad to see that they took the complaint seriously. More/newer filters are always better :)

Great way to stay fit and healthy without having to lift any heavy weights or weight line for a machine. Big open space with plenty of spots to cling with a belay buddy or auto belay, as well as a bouldering area for those who want a little more freedom to climb without a harness

Black Dawn

TIP. Might have been good once. Grips are marinated in chalk black shoes and never cleaned. Setters need to clean grips ie wash them with a pressure washer ok.?! And get something other than a toilet brush to clean the holds. Staff think their epic. The only thing staff are good at is being epic rude needs. Spend the time and clean the place inc vacuum the mats rather than hang tough behind the counters

Eric Jones

I was an outdoor only snob: until this amazing place opened. Truly epic space suited for all skill levels (I can bring my friends that have never climbed) and they hold the world championships here. There is a good reason I meet people from all over the world on occasion while there.

With huge top-rope, lead and bouldering walls, Stone Summit has something to challenge any rock climber, beginner or expert! Their top-notch gym and training facilities mean no need for another gym membership. The approach cafe and plentiful cafe tables make Stone Summit the kind of place at which you could spend all day.

This place is HUGE! It's the biggest rock climbing gym I've ever been to. I was thoroughly impressed. My 9-year had a great time climbing here. Lots of auto-belay climbs for her to do so we didn't have to make reservation for a private session with the staff. Although, the staff was extremely helpful, friendly, and kind. I was amazed with all the different walls they had. The rental equipment was also in pretty good condition. If I lived in Atlanta, I would come here all the time. Seriously, after visiting this place, I got inspired to start rock climbing again.

mgold1126

The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because they started to rate everything softer to draw a larger crowd. I don't understand why they did this. You can train better by making indoor routes just as hard or harder than outdoor ones. I wish they would go back to the way they used to rate routes.

Stone Summit is an amazing place for kids! I took my 10 and 7 year old sons to try it. The only indoor rock climbing they ever did prior to this was a small wall on a cruise ship so I wasn't sure if Stone Summit required more experience. Not at all! The staff was amazing and patiently explained how to auto belay. The boys had a blast! They quickly got the hang of it and LOVED it! Stone Summit is a great deal too. For $17 a child for a day pass, my boys ended up climbing for 4.5 hours! They were exhausted afterwards which is what every mom hopes for! I wish we discovered Stone Summit years ago! We plan to go back many more times. The staff encouraged me to take the class to learn how to belay. I am going to do this in the future. If you are looking for a great indoor activity for kids, do not be intimidated by the size of Stone Summit. There are many opportunities for kids of all ages to enjoy climbing.

Ryan Knight

The ultimate climbing experience in Atlanta. Great workout and lots of variety. You'll never get bored. And good for all ages.

Came here for the first time with my friend who love this place. Definitely enjoyed it.

Brother and I took the belay class ~2 weeks ago. Our instructor was great. We went to take our test today and the guy who gave us our test was sexist, rude and in the words of my 16 year old autistic brother "an outright dick." As soon as he saw that my brother and I weren't the normal climbing type(brother is a bit large and wasn't wearing the ideal climbing clothes), he had decided we weren't going to pass the test. The girl next to us, fairly attractive in the eyes of this guy, took her test in 1/4 of the time. He asked us twice as many questions as he did to the other females taking the belay test. I understand that belaying is extremely important to know how to do, basically have your friends life in your hands, but this guys was overly strict to specific me and my brother. He was constantly talking down to us (even though he was like 5') like we had no idea what we were doing. We had practiced tying the ropes many times at home and went over the climbing commands and terminology we had learned. We don't have a membership so we didn't want to stick around for 30 min and then later retake the test. But in my eyes and my brother's we had passed with flying colors. He had a completely different tone with the other surrounding females than he did with us. It was honestly disgusting to see someone work there acting like that. It was pretty obviously. This did NOT make me or my brother want to go back.

Marco Newman

Great gym! Massive community of enthusiastic climbers at all levels

Kim Wright

Great place to climb and awesome staff!

Never got to find out. I am a grandmother trying to take my son and two grandchildren rock climbing. When they are with me for the week, obviously I am their guardian. I signed the waiver and my 27 year old son (their nephew ) was there with us, ready to climb with them. They wanted to see a legal document proving I'm their guardian. Really?!? Does every grandparent carry a legal piece of paper with them? I suggest they check everyone's paperwork to make sure they are legal. My boys were devastated. And I was angry and devastated, too. Thanks Stone Summit for ruining a family outing. I'll be watching to see if everyone is checked for legal guardianship.

Mary B

I come here all the time. The staff is really friendly and thorough when it comes to making sure everyone is safe and knows how to climb and belay. Contrary to one particularly hornery review, the belay test does NOT require you to master a "twelve-step" knot. It's really only two steps, and trust me, you WANT to master it before you start climbing. I love the bouldering section in particular and the bathroom/shower facilities are always clean.

Bulent Basaran

Rock climbing is an active form of meditation. And it works. Come see climbers climbing in peace!

GGG XXX

All the staffs are sooooo friendly. Had an excited afternoon with friends there. More options of wall if comes with friend. 7 or 8 levels of difficulty, suitable for begginers as well as experienced climber.

Michael Landers

Always a great time there.

Gabe O'Leary

Tons of awesome routes. I've got a bone to pick with some of their belay test practices tho. They require that you have one 'dominant' hand which NEVER comes off the brake end of the rope. This is not how I (and many others) belay and is not necessary. Forcing people to take the test like this is dumb as it is easily possible to be a competent belayer (and to assess one) without following this rule.

When I first walked inside Stone Summit to sign up for their climbing class and saw the huge 60 foot wall I started having some serious doubts. But they went away fast as I looked around the rest of the facility and realized there are different areas to accommodate everyone regardless of their skills. It's basically a huge playground. I warmly recommend visiting the bouldering room but in order to get the best experience try to do it when there aren't many kids around. It is true that the front desk staff lacks customer service skills but on the other hand everyone at the gym is super helpful, giving tips and willing to take the time and teach you a couple of tricks.

Tori 'Miller' Duggins

Great routes & friendly people (staff & climbers)!

David Vazquez

This place was a lot of fun. I went for the first time this past Sunday. All we did was bouldering and it was a great workout and extremely challenging. I can’t wait to go back and do some more climbing.

Kody Smith

Great atmosphere and overall good attitude from staff. It is important that new climbers get educated and feel safe. Stone summit does a good job of that. Never disappointed when I visit here!

I've been going to Stone Summit a little over 5 months now. The environment and energy of the building is beautiful and refreshing, and as far as I know, beats most of the climbing gyms in the area. You should definitely anticipate a busy gym. The popularity of the gym definitely shows - and you will find yourself sharing the walls with tons of other climbers. Going non-peak hours is a good idea if you like more quiet climbs with less people around. My one and only complaint is the staff. While there are very strong and inviting members of the team - there are plenty who lack customer service skills. Every time I go in I know who will give me a warm smile and a welcome in, while I also know those who won't. Some of them could care less that you are a member or even that you're just getting into climbing, and treat you just as another number. I feel that such a cool and unique place should have an accommodating staff - because while the rest of the gyms I've visited fall short in comparison to the building of Stone Summit, they tend have great customer service all around. Climbers should be kind and encouraging people, so thats what one would expect when going into a gym. There has been a few times that the staff made me feel unwelcome, or that I was in the wrong for something I had nothing to do with. Nonetheless, I love the climbing and the few staff members that are kind to me are enough to continue being a member. Other than that, I know most people who go will really enjoy this gym, so I highly recommend checking it out and seeing how you like it!

Alejandro Patino

$20 gets you equipment and all day access to climbing. The most fun I have ever had working out! Everyone was so friendly and helpful and I really appreciated that being such a newbie.

Izzy Ecilera

It was so fun! I loved the service and my family had so much fun.

Hope Brewer

My family has found a new hobby. Loving this place!

David Jaeger

Amazing gym. Great setting. We easily drive 5 hours to train here!

Bronte Valyi

Great location! Ive only been a few times but the staff is nice and the place is huge.

Charise Hart

I really enjoyed my first experience rocking at the Stone Summit. Our instructor was very knowledgeable and really kool. Planning another trip to come back with more friends and family

Carson Heady

This is a massive indoor rock climbing gym for climbers of all ages and experience levels. There are three main sections of rock. There is a bouldering section to the right upon entry, a lead climbing wall straight ahead upon entry, and top roping walls that can also be lead. If you are under 18 and have never been you need a parent or guardian to sign a waiver for you, otherwise you must sign your own waiver for your first visit. Everyone must take a safety orientation when you first go.

lnspotts1

I conquering my fear of heights here, it's awesome! Plus it's a great cross train for me while I train for my next marathon. The staff is incredibly nice and informative. I highly recommend this place to any level of climber.

Troy Robillard

Been rock climbing for a week now. Since day one I got hooked. This place is so much fun to do but to watch as well. Excited to bring my kids this weekend

Arian Bates

Great encouranging environment, friendly staff, and world class rock climbing! Its always a treat to climb at this fantastic facility

Ronald Hilley

Want to work out without pounding away on the treadmill or mindlessly picking things up and putting them down (all things that I love by the way lol). This facility has fair pricing and massive climbing walls and bouldering. I love climbing because it is a workout that does not feel like a workout while you are doing it. Definitely check it out whether you have never worked out in your life or if you are experienced climber.

Chris Lion

Lots of routes for boulder, sport, autobelay and TR, nice verticality (70"), but the TR lines were crowded and too close together for comfort. At any given time there was someone trying to climb directly under my route, and the employees seemed too inexperienced or preoccupied to realize the associated hazards. This included a couple of younger employees who were coaching kids and having them climb directly adjacent to and under me. Luckily, I could just hangdog it out. Not as safe as it could be, but that's based only on my gut instinct. Would've been a totally five star experience on a less crowded day, otherwise go with a level head and make sound decisions and you'll get some good laps in. If you plan on doing lead, bring your own gym rope. Theirs are pretty stiff and twist up easily.

Shorty B.

Great Gym! They have tons of variety in climbing style as well as incredible management. Great environment, I'll definitely be coming back!

Richard McLean

My team from MSA Entertainment provided DJ and photo booth services for a Bar Mitzvah in this location. The staff was very friendly and provided a great place to set up for both the photo booth, in the center of activity; as well as the DJ setup, at one end. That way the sound was able to reach everyone and the kids had room to dance and play games. The activities provided by the center were amazing, and the kids had energy to climb for several hours! They even rigged a giant swing with a couple of extra long ropes. It was a fantastic event. Thanks, Stone Summit!!!

Adrl Mrtz

This is my favorite climbing gym in Atlanta. Stone summit has super friendly staff that will not only get you what you need, but will also introduce you to the facilities and everything they offer. If you’re new they’ll personally walk with you and “show you the ropes” of the place and make sure you feel welcomed! There’s routes here for all levels of experience, from beginner to experienced. There’s routes for lead climbing, auto belay, regular belay, and even an entire separate section for children to practice and for bouldering! The area itself is actually very large and includes sections for you to sit and relax with friends or go jogging on treadmills to get a workout. You can easily hangout here with a good group for a whole day and not realize it :) The bathrooms are very clean too and there are lockers for you to store belongings as well.

Desiree Rose

I love this gym. The walls are super tall; routes are great, and there's always someone to climb with. Ten stars.

Anne Troisi

I gave Stone Summit Atlanta 5 stars back in 2011, but I change that to 2... not because if the facility, staff, or routes. It's an amazing gym and I love the staff and facility, but I give it a 2 star rating because of the people who go there. I have never seen so many pretentious, snobby, ill-mannered climbing in one building. The climbing community is usually so friendly and family-like, but since the climbing world has been changing, it seem like all the privileged, spoiled people have gotten into climbing. There is no common courtesy anymore... The people who are lead certified act like they own the gym and bully themselves onto routes when people are clearly waiting to climb. This has happened to me 5 times in the past 2 weeks. I love the staff and I love the facility, but unfortunately, all these self-proclaimed "elite" climbers have turned it into a horrible atmosphere...

Just For Reviews .

Overall this place is awesome. For the most part, the staff is very nice and helpful, and the facility is great. Membership is very affordable. I recently had to cancel my membership due to moving to a new city, and it was a painless phone call, unlike other gyms I have cancelled with in the past. The only reason I'm docking a star is because I brought my boyfriend in late 2018, who was also planning on getting a membership so we could climb together. He is a disabled army veteran, and asked about their military discount. The woman at the front desk told him that his service (to quote her) "doesn't count" because he is no longer active duty. He explained that he is disabled from his service, and provided his military identification as proof but she wasn't having any of it. He has insecurities about going to any sort of activity that involves him being active after he became disabled, and it took me months to get him to come with me to try climbing. I saw how that statement broke him -- he had planned to be in service for life but cannot due to his injuries. This interaction alone has made me hesitant to return to any Stone Summit facility - refusing their military discount to disabled veterans is not the kind of company I wish to support . Again, overall this place is great. But the lack of compassion and how insensitive that employee was really put a damper on something awesome.

Jason Eberhard

Great gym for any level of climber. Can be a little crowded and peak times but the crowd is friendly. The value of their memberships for the quality of the gym is second to none in the Atlanta area.

Johnny Skandalakis

I boulder here all the time with friends. It’s the only gym (aside from there other locations of course) where routes are set weekly, so there are always new fun challenges.

Been going to SS for over two years! Really great gym!

Jonathan Sturdivant

This place is great! I had a membership to Atlanta Rocks a while back but I like Stone Summit the most. I can't believe how rude that guy is to give 1 star and then mention another gym. I'm not going to bash on other gyms like he did.... Kennesaw and Atlanta both have very good gyms. The staff have all been kind to me. Who was being condescending? Sounds like he was. The only people giving bad reviews are oddly SUPER EXPERIENCED, I know everything, climbers, or total noobs that don't understand how important it is to know what you're doing before climbing. I think if you go into somewhere acting like a know-it-all, people are going to get rubbed the wrong way. Oh look, all of his reviews are bad. What a shocker. A good rule of thumb is to just always be polite, even if your teacher is less experienced and younger than you. It's a procedural thing, just do it. You have to deal with getting gym certified one time and then you're done. I think it's more of a problem with someone giving you advice than anything. Maybe an ego problem. Fernando at the shop next door to the Atlanta location is very knowledgeable as well. I just bought some new shoes from there because my old ones had a hole worn into the toe. I couldn't be more pleased. Keep being awesome guys! Haters are always going to hate.

Hunter T.

Love the place friendly and helpful staff something for everyone and all skill levels.

Gregory Holcomb II

Such an awesome place, and if I lived closer I would just use that place as a workout gym too. It has showers and a great wide workout area with the obvious enormous climbing area. It promotes safety with their training in belaying and has a nice open layout.

Stephanie Davidson

Not enough auto-belays for beginner climbers. They were mostly for kids and only 3 harder ones. Some were not even hooked up. We were disappointed.

Aaron Killian

Climbing staff is superb, super helpful and supportive of less experienced climbers. The walls and bouldering are second to no other indoor rock climbing arena. Place is great no matter what expirience level or age you are, there's something to enjoy.

matthew donaldson

Very inconvenient experience trying to get lead certified. Yesterday was our second trip to SS and both times we have been told that they were not conducting lead tests on those days. The first time we looked past it and bouldered for the day, but for yesterday's trip, I called ahead and made sure we would be able to test on Sunday and upon arrival at 11am, we were told we could only get TR certified. I understand birthday parties take heavy manpower, but the information given was directly misleading, inaccurate, and resulted in excluding us from most of the decent climbing. Management's only comment was "sorry you were told you could test on the phone." TR routes had really boring movement and the bouldering is not substantial enough for a return trip.

Lem Moore

My kids and I, were running up the walls like cockroaches in a crack house! We kicked off our rock climbing adventure with a crazy hookup from Groupon! I got the kids in on a "two for one deal!" I just paid regular price for myself. The facility is very nice and clean. And my first impression was.... this is nothing but a grown folks playground! As a matter of fact I saw more "old heads" climbing the walls than the youngins! The instructor gave us a brief overview of how to use the equipment and emphasized safety from beginning to end! Soon enough, me and the girls were pretending to be on the face of Mount Everest! Wow!.... We had so much fun and a great workout without even knowing it....

Jacelyn Hill

I love to climb, I am on two climbing teams in Atlanta. But Stone Summit is mostly lead climbing so if you are not old enough to lead climb half the gym is not available for you because of that. It is still a really fun place too climb though.

Sierin Watts

Over spring break my family and I went here and we had an amazing time. My 3yr old daughter even had a great time. I recommend this place. Very warm and welcoming. I will be back.

Yvette Davison-Anderson

So fun and it helped my child set goal

Austin Purdy

This is my favorite sport climbing gym I've ever been to

Nick Becker

Best in the country, I don't think I need to say anymore.

Victor Morales Duarte

Great exercise and loads of fun.

Gary Moe

Awesome climbing gym. Only place I've been were I needed a 70m rope to sport climb a route indoors. Tall walls with varying terrain. Nice bouldering too. I always try to stop in to climb a few routes when I'm in town. I need to try out their new location too.

Jeff Jones

What a fantastic climbing gym! Great vibe. Staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. We traveled a few hours to climb at Stone Summit and had a wonderful experience. Bouldering and routes are both high quality. So much to do here. Can’t wait to visit again.

Michael Miller

Fantastic place! Good fun for the entire family and for all ages.

I started coming to Stone Summit back in January as something to do with my five year old son after school and to help him get energy out while working on his coordination, core strength, and planning skills. After a while he wasn't into it anymore, but I have continued on and I love it. I'm not very good, but it's a great full body workout and I leave feeling energized. Some days I'm on the ropes with a partner and some days I'm in the bouldering room. It can be a little intimidating as a newbie to watch the people who are really good, but I have found everyone to be so helpful. The staff as well as the other climbers. I have had more experienced climbers stop and help me figure out a route on more than one occasion. I usually go in the mornings, when there are far fewer people do that I don't have to vie for space. I do wish they'd open early on more mornings. I'd come more often.

Kathleen Greene

When first walking in, it is friendly and welcoming. The desk clerks were very kind and helpful and the size of the gym is very impressive. As soon as you step away from that area, the entire environment changes. I have climbed at this gym before, so I stood aside as I watched my friends receive their guidance by a rude and condescending instructor. Her impatience and pretentiousness was to everyone in the group. That tone was set through the entire gym. It's not Stone Summit's fault that most of the members treat people who are there to just have fun like they don't deserve to be in their highly skilled presence, but that's the way it is. The ropes were good, and they had several autobelays, but how rude the majority of people there were makes it worth going to a smaller gym.

Andrew Forsyth

We had an awful experience here today while trying to use a punch card to climb. A little over a year ago, I bought a 10-punch card for $150. At $15/visit, that's pretty expensive, but it just barely beats the $17 (no gear) day passes. Since I knew I would use the punches eventually, it seemed like a no-brainer. Today, we checked in and had our card scanned. "You're out of punches" the guy said. We were a little surprised, but we figured that we must have used them all and went to the desk to buy more. As I was purchasing 10 more punches, I noticed that the form I was filling out had a "Punch Card Expiration Date" that I was supposed to initial next to, which was BLANK. Seriously, it was BLANK. "What's this expiration date?" I ask. "Oh, the punches expire after a year." Turns out that we had not used all of our original 10 punches- 4 of our punches had expired. That's a $60 value at LEAST. At one point, someone who looked like a manager asked how long ago they expired- it seemed like they were about to give us a break for the day. They had expired a month ago, and apparently that was not deemed recent enough to allow us to recover any value from the expired punches. Honestly, the right thing to do by the staff would have been to give us passes for the day and then ask us to buy more punches for the future. We would have done that. But instead we were disgusted by the waste of money and the lack of help by the staff. We left and will not go back. Ironically, we were about to buy more punches, and it was just the policy which turned us away. What a petty way to lose paying customers. The walls and routes here are excellent, so no complaints there. The gym is very crowded at peak times, which is annoying.

Darin Rogatsky

Anyone posting negatively about this gym, their staff, or their patrons has a climbing confidence problem and feel inferior in some way. The only way you overcome is to log the climbs and improve and push your limits. Only then will the "snobbiness" as you call it dissipate and all of a sudden these are some of the best people engaged in the sport. Respect, you get what you give. World class atmosphere at both gyms guys, keep it up.

not likkd

Good service and nice climbing course.

Justin R

From out of town. Took some friends there that have never climbed before. Really couldn't believe the lack of auto belays at this facility. They had a couple in the "kids area" that weren't even worth climbing. And the 3 they had in the main area were not much larger than the ones in the kid area. Luckily they had a nice variety of bouldering obstacles that made it worth the 20 bucks. Also very disappointed that they did not offer a military discount. I would recommend this place to someone that is belay qualified or willing to become belay qualified.

Quantum op

yeah, i really like this place. great spot for a workout, chill atmosphere and all that. i usually just boulder but the top roping is fun too. they do a pretty good job of coming up with interesting problems also. i hope the gym continues its streak of excellence far into the future :D

Janette diMonda

I love this location. Always plenty of parking, usually good music played inside. Workers are attentive and helpful. The routes are frequently updated and are always fun. The only thing I'd like to see is more weights/dumbbells. And maybe more challenging routes for autobelays. I love their guest policy--members can bring a guest once per month (but as many different guests as they want)!

Joncrandall

Yesterday was my first time visiting Stone Summit Climbing. Overall, I had a good time at this gym and decided to purchase a 5-time visit punch card. Reason I'm giving this review 4/5 stars is because of the ventilation in the place doesn't seem up to par. I intended on staying for a 3-4 hour session, but I had to call it quits once i started physically noticing the amount of chalk in my lungs. I am usually pretty insensitive to particulates and things but i started coughing after about 2 hours. It's a great place to climb, but I wish the air was cleaner inside the gym. Thanks for reading.

Angie J

I enjoyed myself while rock climbing but I feel like the people that worked there didn't really know what they were doing; it was my second time rock climbing ever so I was hoping that the costumer serves would be more better at getting the things you need for rock climbing and more helpful when it came to safety orientation but they weren't and it annoyed me. I honestly think I won't be going there again, and I will try some where else.

Bethany Schuster

Stone Summit is excellent climbing partnered with fantastic staff. Easily the best part of the gym is the atmosphere—wonderful people!

Nick Henry

Imagine if Globo Gym was ran by children for children. I try to not care about the negatives of this place but recently they changed my membership fees without notifying me. After finding out 4 months later I was a little irritated. I didn't get much besides an oh well response from management. If I had anywhere else convenient to go, I'd be done with this place. It's probably awesome if you're on the youth team and can mob whatever area you want to take over or not really show any courtesy to anyone who is just a regular member. If you're a regular member, especially in the bouldering room, it's like being in an unsupervised daycare. Staff has taken a huge dip down. Used to have climbers work there with real applicable knowledge, now not so much. I see ridiculous nonsense pretty much every time I'm there with no one saying anything. If you want to climb a little and be into the social scene, you'll probably love it here. If you want to train, this place is just a necessary evil.

Alex Palmiter

Truly a world class climbing gym. When this was built it was one of the top largest in the US. The facilities and staff are amazing in comparison to other gyms across the US that I have visited. Stone summit has reinvested in their business over the years which is a really great thing to see. 11/10 I've climbed across the world and I still call this my home gym.

Elana Rutherford

Very nice place. Friendly staff and lots of space. Expensive belaying lessons and not enough non belaying lines.

Curtis Harrar

I've been a member of Stone Summit for 3+ years and I used to love the place. Over the past maybe 2 months their air filtration system for chalk has apparently broken. When you walk in you can barely see across the gym because of the haze of climbing chalk in the air. It's noticeable as you climb and hard to breathe. After a full session you walk out of there with an awful dry cough that persists to the morning. The worst thing is - everyone seems to know about it. As you walk around the gym you constantly hear people complaining about the chalk. Usually, this gym would deserve 5 stars but right now it's a borderline health hazard. If you have breathing problems STAY AWAY. Unfortunately if you're a serious climber or at least serious about training, this is your only option in Atlanta as the other gym that I won't mention is tiny and awful and Atlanta Rocks shut down. Please Stone Summit, you used to be great. Fix your filtration system. With how many people I see in that gym you have to be able to afford it. Gym is great, routes are great, staff is friendly, members are nice, and the chalk in the air burns your eyes and throat and has now given me a persistent cough because I go a minimum of 4 days a week for at least 2 hours a session.

Dinushka Fry

Awesome place to climb! Staff are friendly and helpful and the routes are varied and creative.

After going for a couple of months, so far so good–this place is awesome! All the employees are genuinely interested in the sport, incredibly helpful, and kind as can be. The routes change frequently, which keeps things interesting. Overall the facility is in great condition. I'm still very new to climbing and am so thankful to have Stone Summit as a place where I can continue to learn.

Bryan Pyle

I was a member there for about 2 years and recently had to cancel my membership because of the air quality. Honestly, this is a really great gym with really great staff, but the air quality has worsened dramatically in the last year. I usually get there around 5-7pm on weekdays (so right when it starts to get crowded), and the entire gym (especially the bouldering area) is filled with a white haze of chalk. I've complained to the front desk a couple times and they're adamant that the air quality will get better with the new chalk eaters they've installed, but they've been there for at least a month and I haven't seen any improvement. I'm not sure what's changed in the last year (and maybe it really is just more crowded than a year ago), but I've had to stop going because I can feel the chalk in my sinuses/throat when I leave, and I usually wake up the following morning with mild chest pain and a headache. I really enjoyed climbing at Stone Summit and hope to restart my membership in the future if they ever clean up the air.

Craig Harkins

Great place to learn and practice rock climbing. Just added new routes in a middle column this past year and have a large bouldering area for when you don't have a belaying partner. There are several auto-belay stations as well for beginner routes.

John DeRoo

My wife and I climb here 3 times a week. Great mix of bouldering, top-roping, and lead climbing in one facility. Staff is very friendly and helpful, routes are well set, and there is lots of positive energy as climbers cheer each other on. Two thumbs (way) up!

Will Burns

Short staffed. Very inconvenient to get your belay certification which cuts out 80% of the gym.

Amvi B

This facility is a great time for families and others alike. The front desk staff members were quite friendly and assuring. Me personally, I went to an elliptical trainer while my husband taught his brother, his wife and, in total, five children how to climb the colorful walls. Everyone had a good time. Everyone had powder all over their hands and faces at the conclusion. It was like a white Deepavali!! So funny. My two hyperactive kids fell asleep on the ride home. I was so, so happy. During my stay, there were people from all over the country that came to visit Stone Summit. This is a local business so come out and give them support!

Jeffrey Martino

My sister and I had an awesome experience with a belay certification class. Not sure if they were running a promotion but they offered us a great deal for people who are wanting to get into the sport ($15 belay and rope tying lesson with unlimited climbing time afterwards, rental equipment included). With the Midtown location now open, we had plenty of room to climb and loved all the employees and the atmosphere. Will always come back now every time I'm in Atlanta!!! Thank you!!!!

Ferdy Dobson

Great staff, great variety of routes for all levels. There is a reason why it's so popular with adults of all ages and seems to have plenty of options for kids too

Carolina Orrego

Lots of fun!!! We went with out family and friends, including kids and elders and it was such a great day! Huge place with lots of options for climbing. Friendly staff

Nicholas Conner

Great climbing gym. This place is absolutely massive. There are always lots of awesome routes, and they clean the wall and put new routes at just the right frequency. The only negative is that it can get really crowded during prime time, and finding a rope or a whole on the bouldering wall can get a little tiresome. The full gym is a nice addition, as well as the cafe and store. Prices in the store are fairly average, but they do have frequent sales to clear out inventory where you can pick up some good deals. The cafe has a nice selection of snacks, and the food that they cook is actually quite good!

David Dantzler

IMPRESSIVE

Great atmosphere. Definitely will be going back. Loved all the different routes. Thanks Sarah Lewis for showing us around!

Had a lock-in for our daughters birthday at Stone Summit Atlanta. Could not be happier with the customer service we received from the employees. Everyone from Ricky, the GM to the front desk staff went above our expectations. Our group had girls who had climbed a lot to first time climbers and everyone was helped, felt comfortable and had a great time. If you have not yet visited this place give it a try!

Jonah Wunder

big wallz. big pumpz. big boiz.

The gym is rather nice and the staff working the front end are real friendly and inviting. The individual giving our orientation was thorough and open to questions we had about the facility. Upon completion of the orientation, he notified my friend and I that we could take a belay test in order to top rope. Having been climbing before and familiar with belay techniques, we spent 15 minutes familiarizing ourselves with the figure 8 follow through. After affirming our competence, we turned the light on to notify a worker we were ready for testing. After another 5 minutes, I went up to the desk to ask for the test as no one came. A guy followed me back to the testing area with my friend and we both tied a figure 8 follow through and hooked up our ATCs and demonstrated our belay techniques. Everything leading up to this moment was okay, and had what I'm about to explain not occured, I would be writing a 5 star review. During testing, our tester nitpicked profusely and it seemed like he was out to fail us from the beginning. Bare in mind, we hooked up our equipment flawlessly however we were shown an example of an old harness not even used at the gym and asked to explain what was wrong with it and how to properly wear it. Furthermore, he made comments about how we held our hand too close to the ATC and it could result in pinching. Finally, while testing us on the belay, he failed to put any weight on his side of the rope to simulate an actual climber so it was near impossible to simulate a proper belay. Concluding the test, he told us that we missed "critical" points and that we wouldn't be able to top rope that day. We drove over an hour to get to your gym and and spent $20 just to auto belay on less challenging routes. On the sheet where we signed our names I noticed that out of the 15 names I saw on the list, everyone had passed but 1 at the top. I find it odd that everyone else was able to pass this and being experienced in belaying, we were not. I never write negative reviews but I feel as though our test wasn't fair. Without the belay certification, nearly the entire gym was cut out, and it was something we were really looking forward to doing.

Rob Wilkey

I've been coming here for 3 years as of today. Never a moment when I didn't feel like I was climbing in a world-class facility with world-class staff.

Matthew Rutledge

Absolutely will not return. Which is a shame, as this is the most impressive indoor facility I have seen by far. The problem was the staff. I have been on rope for over 20 years, to include technical rope rescue operations. And have climbed all over the country. And the crew I came with all had 2+ yrs experience except for one who was new. Right off the bat we were treated like noobs. Upon inspecting my belay technique, the instructor said "wow, that makes a lot of sense, but I gotta give you a fail." I was told to go stomach, eyes, knees. Which was ridiculous. Especially since I wasn't even going to use a tubular, since I brought my own trango cinch. At one point after my son smoothly belayed me down, a staff member approached him and in a condescending manner asked if he'd ever belayed before. My son responded, "yeah, hundreds of times. And then she still criticized him. I sat back at one point and realized this snobbish attitude carried through from the staff to the members who acted like non members were invading their wall space and stinking up their gym. I read the other reviews and it seemed like only a few other people experienced this, but their experience was exactly the same. Shame. I would give it another try, if it wasn't a 2+ hr drive.

Best indoor rock climbing gym in Atlanta! The place is huge and caters to all: beginners, regulars, top, lead, boulder, birthday parties and special needs climbers. Given the thousands of customers they serve I think they are doing a phenomenal job. Gym hours are great, staff is enthusiastic and they host fun events. I've been a member for 5 years now and it's my second home for several nights a week. When I forget my gear at home it's good to know the rental is included in my membership. Fitness equipment, yoga classes, lockers, showers, towel service, I could go on and on. Worth the membership fee! **only negative, and this is a recent development, is the "music", it sounds like someone plugged in the fax machine to the speakers, screechy sounds at sometimes too high volume to hear your climbing partner. I'm not dissing anyone's taste, but can we mix it up? Electronica seems to dominate** The climbing community is a whole 'nother story, the gym is not responsible for how groups of people act. I think most people are reasonable when you point out something. I've witnessed dangerous belay techniques over the years and now simply report them to the front desk. Not worth arguing with arrogant people. The Kennesaw location is newer and awesome as well, but it is in Kennesaw...

Tony Wilkey

Caring and enthusiastic staff and awesome climbing and bouldering walls. Very well maintained and the routes are rotated often.

K Adams

This was one of the best gyms I've visited! Friendly staff, great routes, and awesome environment. The only reason I won't give 5 stars is because almost every rope we used needed replacement. Crusty, hard sheaths on climbing ropes is really difficult to belay with, so it would be nice to keep those top-rope setups fresh!

Ty Porche

Im a new climber but this place is great for people at all levels. I couldn't beleive the rock wall went so high... walking into their facility I was so amazed at the size, space and height. You should definitely try this once in your life. They teach the best techniques and offer a variety of services to help you reach your goals.

Antler Tango

Been a member for years and years. Amazing gym with great staff, facilities, and classes. Routes and problems are changed often, are all color-coded (instead of taped), and come in every difficulty rating you need. Plenty of room to grow and get stronger here.

nathan johnson

Huge facility, nice staff, and reasonable entry fee. Climbs seemed rated well and were challenging!

Reginald Tate

This place is great, if your new getting into climbing they make you feel safe and want to just go for it. Check it out and go for the top!

Drew Schneider

Solid sized gym. They update the routes with some frequency

Rachel Golding

Best Climbing gym I've ever been to, and it has the lowest price of anywhere as well. Recommend for beginners and those that want a vigorous climbing workout on Lead. Even if you've never been climbing, try this place and be prepared to pick up a new hobby.

William Wang

One of the better gyms in ATL. Huge sport climbing space with a variety of 'overhungness' and routes. Bouldering area is a tad small but the setting is great and the routes change every week. The gym can get crowded on weekends and Friday nights, but that's to be expected given its location and size.

ariel baumwell

Friendly and knowledgeable staff. The climbing routes change frequently. You will never be bored.

Kevin H

friendly and helpful staff, good for beginner and advanced climbers.

Mason Poe

I brought our two small kids (5 and 7) in today for an easy climbing session. We have been climbing at Atlanta Rocks and Wall Crawlers for a bit and they wanted to try something new. Unfortunately, my twenty years of climbing experience in Boulder, Indian Creek, Red Rocks, Joshua Tree, and Yosemite (not to mention locally around Lost Wall and Tallulah) didn't prepare me for the academic rigor of the belay exam from Glen and I'll need to come back for a re-examination. And don't get me wrong, after climbing since '97 - I understand the need for rigor and discipline when it comes to safety. If I had let go of my brake hand at any time or forgotten how to tie a figure 8 I could understand. My challenge was even though I had tied a text-book knot (no overlapping areas inside the knot) and doubled over back with a back-up knot... I couldn't tell Glen how many times the rope was folded over. I kid you not. I even tonight went to see if this is some big trivia question I had overlooked... I mean... I know it's double backed and I guess in my perspective if I wanted to know if it's right, I would look at it and visually inspect the overall structure. Instead, he said perhaps I should pay for belay class or study the board. Are you kidding? Anyway, his tone and overall approach was wildly condescending, showed a lack of exposure, and the interaction was absolutely not positive. I had really big hopes for Stone Summit but I think our kids and I will stick to the smaller more modest gyms this summer.

Nemo DeWitt

They got a tension board. Need I say more?

Conner Canatsey

Great place to climb for both first timers and veterans. Great staff and a cool store to boot.

Phillip King

Friendly staff, as well as climbing routes for all experience levels.

Felix Chu

Amazing climbing gym! Top rope, bouldering, weights, cardio, kids section, crazy bouldering treadmill...this place has it all.

Domnique Guerrero

Great facility - spacious and clean. There are plenty of routes to climb. Great for novice and expert climbers. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable.

Alaina Smith Walker

I would give zero stars if I could, because I am absolutely apalled by a company that would let go of a general manager who has done nothing but grow the brand, and has not put a toe out of line. Daniel, your treatment of one of your hardest working employees this past week is unforgivable. You at least owed him an explanation, instead of taking hearsay at face value. Shame on you.

Mikala Watkins

This place is run by a bunch of children. Now to be fair upon arriving the staff we encountered were friendly. The first girl Amanda walked us through getting setup since it was our first time there. We were later handed over to a girl named Molly, she was sweet as well. After getting bored with the 2 stations alotted for beginners we decided to try and get tested for our knots. You are provided a picture board and you are supposed to mimic the pictures. After 15 mins of not getting it, I asked two girls that seem to work out there often for help. They were kind enough to show us how it is done. After another 30 mins we flip a switch that requests a staff member to come test you. The first person that saw us was a guy I think his name was Jesse. He told us that we had another portion of the test that we hadn't practiced. At this point my boyfriend wanted to leave because we had wasted so much time there already. I convinced him that we had come this far and that we should finish. After reviewing the picture board we flip the switch again and a girl appears. She did not introduce herself and seemed annoyed to even be testing us. The whole time she had a condescending tone, more so towards my boyfriend. Of course at the end she said she couldn't pass us. I told her they should have someone teaching people how to do what is required and not leaving them to their own devices. She told me that they just had a class at 2.We gave her our gear and left to retrieve our shoes. On the way back to the front I could overhear her talking about us to her co-workers. And that is why I am leaving such a low review. You never talk badly about your customers, especially while they are there. I would write her name but she was to good to give it to us when we first met. Shame on you, fix your attitude or don't work in customer service. What a waste of 40 bucks!

Connie Thomas

Great for getting a good body workout in with a different twist. But if your bored easily like me and want more to the experience then give yourself an hour to two and that’ll do it because there’s nothing after that. The prices we fair so you pay for what you get

Kosta El Greco

Nice gym, but worst climbing ropes in the country! I've climbed at dozens of gyms across the US, and I've never seen ropes this bad. It's a nice, modern gym, but they cheaped out and used crappy static ropes for toprope. They're so old and kinked they won't even hang straight and trying to get them to feed through a belay device is a workout! It's a safety issue, because it will often jam up your belay device when taking out slack, or cause jerky uncontrolled lowering. Other than that I have no complaints, but the ropes are so bad they ruin the whole experience.

Alexandra Almeter

While I haven't tried a lot of climbing gyms, I know this climbing and fitness center is definitely one of the best! For the belay certification course, the instructor was thorough, friendly, and fantastic! Despite a large volume of climbers, there were plenty of open ropes and well-designed routes throughout the gym. I highly recommend this location for any beginner or experience climber.

Charlie Scott

I have been climbing for a while, but this was my first and last visit to Stone Summit. I love climbing because of the connection with nature; Stone Summit felt more like a big city climbing gym and amusement park. Also, the belay test seemed more like rush week at a fraternity (testing on "Stone Summit" techiqnue ). I only passed the belay test enough for the "day pass", because the instructor told me that I was being to careful, "wasn't going fast enough". You can have the big city climbing gym; I'll keep my quaint Rocks Atlanta membership.

Joaquin Byrd

Very nice staff. Large space that accommodates many people. Different levels and protection everywhere.

Brent Sattelmeier

I dig the bouldering, top roping, workout equipment, the whole shebang

Valerie Wise-Stevens

The front staff was not friendly at all. No one acknowledged our presence. We hung around a little while longer looking at brochures. The staff still didn't approach us, they just stayed behind the counter trying to look busy. Finally we just left.

Cory

This is the best climbing gym in Atlanta. Friendly staff and nice facilities.

Azrof Darkwood

Cool place. Cool people. Safe. Challenging. Do it.

Carina Claassen

Been climbing at Stone Summit since it opened in 2010. It has a great community and setters reset sections of the walls weekly. The only con is that it has gotten extremely busy over the past few years, so on weekday evenings you're fighting for space on the wall.

Corey Watford

I went here with a group to do some indoor Rock Climbing, I wasnt expecting much, but this place has so much to offer. From beginners to advanced they have a spot for you. Our guide was very informative, and quickly got us climbing in no time. I would highly recommend this place.

Charlie Marks

Stone summit is a great place for beginner rock climbers to get better. I started my rock climbing here and it's going great

Genna Cohen

Lots of fun, overhanging routes and a super friendly staff (especially Rob!) that made it easy for me to get in a few lead and TR routes while visiting from out of town.

Pr3Historic

I've been climbing here for over 7 years now probably. The best gym in the area for sure. However three things keep it from 5 stars (ranked most needed to least needed). 1. No "Wideboyz" climbing holds. This would make some awesome bouldering and sport problems and they've been out for a while now. Get some pls 2. Wifi is subpar. Speed will drop repeatedly and disconnect frequently especially if not on first floor 3. It gets damn warm in here during the summer. The first floor is bearable but if warming up or whatever upstairs it is HOT. But honestly it would still be 5stars if they just got wideboyz holds I just wanna crack climb fam

Ross Brewer

Other than it existing forever away from where I live, this place is perfect - low entry price, large range and variety of route difficulties, a great regular workout area, and the staff is friendly. I should give it a poor rating to discourage the large number of weekend climbers, but the place is big enough to accommodate a crowd (waiting in a line that's one group deep is not bad, if there is a line at all during peak hours).

Cole Smith

Very pretentious climbers. Fun routes however not graded well. Very good gym for amateur climbers.

Steven Prior

Awesome huge indoor climbing. Thick sweat smell, worse than gym locker. Friendly staff, good value.

Hugh Wilson

Been a member for a year now, and it still never gets less enjoyable. Excellent mental and physical challenge, great whole body wornout, entire facility is always well cleaned and lively, good music and a good regular gym area as well... Good enough for me to cancel my other gym membership. Also while it is a bit of a drive, its worth it and I enjoy alot of the restaurants and shops in the area. Only problem ive ever had is the few times theyve closed early to host an event... Long drive just to be closed. Also it can get fairly crowded at certain times of the day, but its easily avoidable. Other than that not any improvements I could ask for.

Cea Wiley

Went to Stone Summit while in town visiting my family. I'm a member at Central Rock Gym in Massachusetts and was really impressed with this gym. It came recommended by a fellow MA climber and it lived up to all the talk. So many bouldering routes, it was almost overwhelming! Staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming and they have autobelays which I'd never seen, offering even more options for folks who like to climb alone.

Chad Wilson

Great service and cheaper than other gyms for day passes and rentals

Selma Omerefendic

It was my first time ever trying rock climbing and I must say I had a great time and the instructor was very good and explained everything in detail. I will be coming there way more often. I must say it is a great workout :-)

Andrew Jaffa

Great afternoon with the kids. Staff was friendly and extremely helpful.

jason wallace

Came for a birthday on a Saturday. Was interested in climbing more than just the kids walls. There were no staff belaying for you. If you want to try any walls other than kids section you're SOL you must master a 12 step knot before trying anything other than kids section
