The Fruita Heath club is by far one of the poorest options for a gym on the western slope. The equipment is aging and not being properly maintained. Broken equipment can be left unaddressed for months, to the point where members write passive notes on the “out of order” sign. Leather padding on equipment like benches is being repaired with duct tape. Cracked plates and broken barbells littered the open workout area. The men’s locker room had an out of order sign on a urinal for years that had dried out and smelled but somehow, because it had a cute frowny face drawn on it, it was ok.
I have found myself turning lights back on in either the locker rooms or main workout areas. TV’s were being shut off by staff while customers are on the cardio equipment watching them. It seems as though the owners have directed the staff to shut down for the evening at the end of their shift and due to the hours being cut back that happens at about 7pm, during the after work rush. Although the gym is 24/7, if you are there outside staffed hours (9-1 then 3-7:30 during weekdays, 8-11 on Saturday and not staffed on Sundays) you are left to fend for yourself in search of light switches, stumbling around a gym with equipment all over the place.
The Fruita Health Club has recently downsized to a much smaller facility due to a loss of their lease. They now have crammed most of the old equipment into a facility roughly half the size. Working out has now become a chore of trying to stay out of others way. Even at moderate hours the gym feels crowded, that is if you can find a parking spot and actually get in to work out. If you are worried about the cleanliness of the locker rooms, don’t worry, the new gym doesn’t have any.
All these wonderful amenities for $35 a month, which does not include things such as child care or any additional classes. If you were a member before the gym downsized and are unsatisfied with the new facility and would like to cancel your membership you will be slapped with a $100 “late enrollment fee.” Which is just a loophole the owners have found to not call it a cancelation fee and make it more difficult for you to defend. It speaks volumes that they have had that many people object that they have to stoop to that level.
Go spend your money at any other gym in the valley, you’ll be glad you did.
