Great for rock climbing and bouldering enthusiasts, also great for novices... Like me

This is a great place to climb. Weather you are a beginner or advanced, you will find a wall that is sure to challenge you. Paths are labeled well and it's not usually packed with people to cause a significant wait. The walls are nice and tall and they offer a few single lines throughout the space so you don't have to have a buddy. They also have a bouldering area. I've heard they do yoga and other classes but have not participated in them. Pricing is reasonable and worth it if you stay more than a couple hours. If you are a beginner be prepared to watch a short video, the process is for orienting and safety.

Pros: It’s a climbing gym. Has a decent sized bouldering area, lots of sport climbing, and auto belays. Staff was welcoming. Cons: The gym opens to non-members at 3pm. This ensures that it will be swarmed with school-aged children. Nothing against kids, but they clearly run the place, and it gives it a hectic environment. The floor isn’t one giant pad, you have to move the designated crash pads around you. Seems like a good way to break your ankle. The eight minute video at the start was painful to sit through. Not sure why experienced climbers need to watch this and have an orientation too. Boulder routes didn’t flow well compared to the many other climbing gyms I’ve been to. Day pass price was the final thing that ensured I won’t be returning. EDIT: Owner responded and hooked me up with a free day pass during member hours. Member hours are clearly the way to climb here. It's a totally different experience--you can actually climb without fear of being trampled. It made the gym more enjoyable.

It seems that routes rarely get reset (some boulder routes are more than 4 months old). The tape markers on a lot of the routes are peeling off, making it difficult to locate the next hold in the route. Top rope rules only allow grigri use. I did not get properly tested for autobelay or proper belay techniques, this could be seriously dangerous. Almost every hold on the walls are made of cheap slippery plastic, I noticed a few were carved out of cheap lumber. Routes are confusing and don't seem to be well thought out. I don't mean to be critical, but this place needs some work!

Small, crowded, not great facility options (example: bouldering and the varied skill levels for it were very limited), and customer service was bad. Still, it's a climbing gym with working harnesses and auto belays so that's at least good.

Tis place is so much fun and the staff are nice and helpful

HORRIBLE. pricing did NOT match online prices, and definitely not the "biggest indoor gym in AZ". definitely do not reccomend. if you do not know how to belay, they require a 45$ fee to learn after already paying for gear and to enter, limiting inexperienced climbers to roughly 5 or 6 rock walls. as for bouldering, there is a big selection, but only for highly skilled climbers. only a few are for a lesser experienced climber. for beginner or experienced, which i am, i highly recommend Climbmax gym for a way better experience. AZ on the rocks is an unfunctional, uninstructional rock gym. take your business elsewhere!

I went in on a whim with my husband last weekend and left a member! I am new to climbing and not in the best of shape, but the staff and other friendly patrons made me feel welcome and safe. I am excited to continue pursuing my new hobby (and getting fit- climbing is a workout!) at this wonderful gym.

Had a great time. Fun atmosphere with great selection of difficulty levels and bouldering options .auto-belay system is super easy and good for those who come in alone. There is a little gym upstairs and a yoga studio as well.

Cam is the best.

Bill Butler

Amazing place. Clean, interesting walls; nice staff. Great hours. Nice weight etc. room upstairs.

Cassie Frankson

The video thing when you first go here is a bit annoying, but other than that this is a nice place to come and have a climb. Not too packed and everything is labeled appropriately. The bouldering area is really cool!

Cannot speak highly enough of this place! The staff is kind, knowledgeable, passionate, and helpful. Love the climbing options and yoga classes, especially Yoga Nidra with Greg. Whenever I make time to stop by, I always learn something new and leave thinking, "Wow, today has has been a great day!" The positive energy of AZ on the Rocks is contagious.

Super fun great workout, the kids had a great time and it got them away from the tv and electronics. Get there early when it opens to the public because it gets busy fast.

First time going to this place and overall it was a pleasant experience. We had a two young gentlemen take our info and gave us a video tutorial. After putting on our gear, we had a young lady give us a tour and a brief explanation of the gym. The turnover was odd because she didn't introduce herself, there was lack of excitement from her, and the young gentlemen was standing with her as well (maybe he was training her). She also made an unnecessary comment about about the traditional belay and the auto belay. She explained why the hanging ropes were there and said those are used by the people that are belayed certified and "by the looks of it you two don't seem belayed certified." It was a quick rude judgement which she didn't build any rapport. If she did build any type of rapport she would have known that we were familiar with the traditional belay then the auto. Helpful and thorough tips would have been nice to get use to the auto belay. I would suggest better communication styles for your staff because this will help you have repeat customers since the tutorial was the only time I had an interaction with your staff.

Nice set up and reasonable price. Took a while to get started.

My favorite climbing gym in Phoenix. There’s only a couple worth going to but this is the best of these worlds: TR, Sport, and Bouldering + Affordability and Gym. I love this place and the community. The staff are always super helpful and friendly as well!

Micheal Koelsch II

Great place to climb with multiple levels for good training. Staff is also nice too.

Brandon Andrus

Always a good time climbing at AZR!!! Routes constantly change keeping it challenging! Staff is always a pleasure to be around!

Took my wife here for her bday because she wanted to see what rock climbing was all about. This is the best indoor rock climbing place we have found in Phoenix. The auto baley systems are very nice. A ton of different paths to take based off of experience. Upstairs has a whole different ninja warrior style playground to mess with. Ill be back for sure

Mike Vanderslice

Awesome climbing gym with great service. They also offer yoga classes. Highly recommended.

Kiana McCrea

Best rock climbing gym in Phoenix hands down! The routes are the best and the staff is great!

This place is really fun for the whole family! Were visiting from vegas abd went here and it was awesome. Good enough for repeats.

Love this place. Great routes, friendly staff, air conditioned! Great for beginners and experts.

Wish the parking lot was bigger but that's not their fault. One thing I really like about this place is the auto-belays so even if you don't have a partner you can still top-rope. Definitely one of the nicer climbing (and yoga) gyms I've been to and it's great for its size. Usually busy when I go, friendly atmosphere. Wish they had more extended hours, especially on the weekends considering the monthly membership price.

S. Nakasone

Great freindly staff Steve the ninja warrior instructor was great with the 8 kids we brought in for a class . Would definitely go back next time we're in town.

Larry Fisher

Friendly and attentive staff, excellent equiptment, tons of climbing options for various skill levels, the yoga classes have all been cool, very clean facility, lots of parking, late hours for after work fun and a killer training facility upstairs. I love this place!

The whole process with the video orientation is a real pain. I understand its usefulness for kid groups (and their parents), but for adults who have climbed before, the waiver and skills check by a staff member should suffice. Other gyms I have gone to ask to see you tie in, commands, belay technique, spotting, and you are good to go. The staff (who were very polite) told me to wait for the next video time and they would let me know when to view it, then they forgot to tell me when it started, so I wound up missing the next video showing, and was waiting for 40 minutes from the time I arrived, until I actually got to climb. A simple shout out to the reception area letting people know the next orientation video was starting would have been appreciated. The bouldering routes were enjoyable, however there seemed to be a lack of consistency with the taping. You had V0 and V7 with the same color tape, which would not normally be a problem however some routes were missing ratings to begin with, or were missing tape by the start so it made it frustrating to not know how the problem went. I understand that I may be totally spoiled by other gyms I have climbed at, but maybe this can be helpful criticism. I did appreciate the staff roaming the floor. During the day I went there many, many kids there and staff were quick to keep them from running under you or grabbing a pad while I was using it, and were overall very friendly. The auto-belays are a very nice feature as well, and the cracks are a great feature on the walls.

I came in to Az on the rocks for the first time and I was able to test out of belaying. There was absolutely not Hassel and one of the very cool things was chalk didn't cost extra. It comes with the gear when you rent. There were a lot of people there when I went, but not once did it ever feel crowded. They had every wall open and even had 12 auto belays. The walls were challenging and spaced out so if you wanted a certain level, you didn't get stuck on one wall. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for great climbing exercise, thorough work out gym, and friendly staff. The place was clean and tidy. Can't say enough good things about this place. Climb on!

Ablyvian Zirit

I had a great time here. The prices are reasonable. They have rock climbing, yoga and a gym. The staff is personable and helpful. Very kid friendly!

Ben Skoog

Great gym! Climb the walls till you get tired then workout the rest of the way.

The people their were very rude to my child and her friend very unprofessional making up rules as they go their bathroom was disgusting rusted rude people saying not my job

Movement Monastery

Great Ninja warrior program with coaches that take their job extremely serious but also know how to have a good time and make it fun, challenging and well rounded. Coaches have actually competed on the show and take the time to know their students.

Cool Kill

Terrible, smells bad, bad service, just hated it.

Charlotte Sullivan

There was a couple who told my child to not climb here because she was to unperfetional...my childs friend was told not to be able to go on the ropes because it wasn’t the employees job for that time.

The most fun you will ever have with your pants on. I would call it a workout but it's too much fun, it's like trying to solve a puzzle while on an endorphin high. I will definitely be back, might even move here. Brixx was very helpful and walked us through the things we didn't understand. One of my most favorite places in Arizona

Tim Labarr

Doug Whitbeck

The rules change every time I climb here. I returned after forgetting what it’s like to climb there only to be told I need to fill out another waiver. After doing so I was told that neither my partner nor I could belay each other because of the “rules” that day? So, we chose to boulder instead which was overrun by unsupervised young kids. I was afraid for them while they were playing under me while I was climbing. Also the staff did not seem to know what was going on and were overwhelmed. Glad they got new carpet but you’re better off climbing outside.

Heidi Parmenter

My 5 yr old loves this place. He is not quite tall enough for the rock climbing but he still had a blast.

Bryan Getz

Excellent!!!!

I have been climbing in rock gyms for about 10 years now and find AZR to provide one of the better indoor climbing experiences. Now that I have 2 boys (Age 3 and 6) I bring them along to climb with me. It is at the point now where my 6 year old can climb routes that I struggle with, what a great confidence builder. My 3 year old loves climbing and you should see how proud he looks when he makes it to the top. AZR is a wonderful place to hang together as a family and do something new.

All family had a great time climbing, using the equipment upstairs and taking a yoga class. Yoga instructor was great, and staff really friendly. Very nice spot in Phoenix to spend a few hours! If I lived closer, I'd definitely become a member!

Adam Moore

Overly safety conscious. Staff are like helicopter parents. It's difficult to come alone and still adhere to all of there safety rules which other gyms don't have.

Michaela McGee

All the staff was very sweet and very helpful. :)

I went climbing at AZ on the Rocks today and the climbing was fun and the facility was clean and I wish that I could give this place 5 stars but unfortunately the customer service at this gym was so bad that it actually made me feel unwanted. To clear up it wasn't the entire staff that was rude, most of the staff was actually very friendly and knowledgeable, but one staff member, I believe her name was Autumn was just awful. Every 5 minutes she would very rudely yell over the P.A. what time it was, she made it seem like she really wanted to just go home. It made all of the customers fell very unwelcome and unwanted. I even saw one couple leave in a hurry saying that they felt unwelcome. I wish I could say that this was the extent of it, but at the end of the day, she literally yelled over the P.A. telling customers that they were closed and that they had to get out now!. I understand telling the customers that you are closed, but to repeatedly yell at the customers to get out is unbelievably rude. If I am paying $30 dollars, I shouldn't feel like I am being forced to leave, or that I am in a hostile environment

Hours are short. An all day pass is about $20 so try to get the most out of it! Pretty nice. Can get pretty crowded.bouldering area is nice.

I love this gym! Has great routes/problems for bouldering and rope climbing (top and lead). They have auto-belay's which is a nice feature, should you ever find yourself coming alone. During the slower times, they'll put up the slackline too which is awesome! Almost all the staff here are awesome ... there are only a couple that are scrooges! The community is the best part ... the people are so friendly and out-going and constantly inviting you to climb with them. It's awesome! I only give it 4-stars because of the hours. I wish they had more morning times ... even for members!
