We've got all the reviews of people who are buying the products and services of The Alaska Club South (Gym) around Alaska area.
To this day the business receives a score of 3.3 over 5 and this rating has been calculated on 81 reviews.
You may have noticed that the average score it has is discreet, and it is founded on a very high number of reviews, so we can say that the evaluation is quite credible. If many people have bothered to evaluate when they are satisfied, is that it works.
As you know, we do not usually bother to write opinions when these are correct and we usually do it only if we've had a problem or issue...

Good place to work out
This place is so unorganized and has no idea what they're doing. I came to Alaska to visit for the summer and I go to the gym frequently and my boyfriend goes to this gym so he took me. Yesterday the worker took his picture got him in the system and we had no problem and I was able to work out as his guest no extra charge. Today we go and she can't find him in the system, needs to take a whole other picture of him because the last employee never saved anything??? like how are you that careless and then asks for my ID. Yesterday he did not ask for my ID either so I was confused. I go to the car to get my ID and then she waits til I come back to tell him it's $15-20 for a guest. Why was that never mentioned? I think it is ridiculous that the employees have no communication with each other whatsoever.
Fine, but way way way too expensive!
Its colder on the inside than it is on the outside during the winters. I do not understand how they can think having the thermostat on cold helps people when its colder than a freezer outside. This applies to all the gyms
We are just having an awful time communicating with someone about a double billing we received. I have left messages and my wife has sent emails. Apparently there is only one person named Debbie who is responsible for the summer childcare programs and she doesn't respond to emails from their accounting department. We were double charged for a week of childcare and it's almost $200 but nobody in the billing department knows how to get in touch with this person for authorization to process a refund and they aren't permitted to reach out to a supervisor for help with it. EDIT: I am updating this review to include the final resolution and thank the Alaska Club for refunding the duplicate payment. It seems that we did have to make an awful lot of noise before the issue got their attention and even then the official response went from what was initially "we have performed a complete audit of your records and all charges are correct" to them offering a sincere apology for the mistake but at least it was resolved and refunded. We will likely keep using the summer childcare because our kids really enjoy them and keeping an eye on billing is something that we need to be doing anyway.
WAY over-priced!!! Pool open swim hours greatly limited, and not conducive to young children. Equipment constantly faulty. Showers back up and flood. I wish we lived closer to the Eagle River location. That place is awesome. South isn't worth it at half their cost. You can find better value elsewhere.
Men's bathroom are dirty
The new equipment upgrades at the South and other clubs is great. Convenient and I can get in and get my work out completed in about an hour, take a hot shower and get on with my day. I have been to gyms, and I prefer the convenience of several locations that I can go to depending on my schedule and how much time I have. AK Club is an easy solution for my fitness needs.
We have a lot of great long time members, and great employees. We just got a new GM and I have high Hopes that good things will be happening soon! - I am an employee here, and I truly do enjoy my job. The members make it all worth it!
I love the south location, I tried the other one I didn't like there customer service. The south location, the people are so sweet and caring and very helpful. Not rude what so ever. I taught it was clean and beautiful. I'll keep going back.
We enjoy coming here. My daughter loves the starfish swimming lessons. We just experienced the parents night out, what a huge hit! Love it!!! I must say this, we can tell when Karen from the cleaning crew is working, the ladies locker room is spotless!
Alaska club is the worst gym deal in Anchorage. Would not sign up for the "promotion" they advertise because of the fine print the membership worker will avoid mentioning.
Overpriced. Family locker rooms are disgusting. Switched to YMCA.
platinum club is fabulous
When I decided to become an Alaska club member again, I was also offered a two month free trial for "good life" which includes the good stuff. Such as tanning session per day, massages, etc. Including a "two free guest pass". So I signed up early March and I thought this would've been a perfect opportunity to join a Zumba class and invite a friend with me. Don't get me wrong, it was such a amazing fun class and I love the gym. However, it's the employees that could care less for you. To share my experience, I brought in my friend with me to try zumba. I try to explain to him that I recently signed up and was offered this two month trail where I can bring in a guest. He was in a disagreement. He said that it's not under my account and that I don't have this offer. I tried helplessly to explain again, I even brought in the paperworks that states so but again, he said no, that's not the case. He said "ma'am, I'm letting you go as a warning, but next time there'll be a charge." Seriously?! I feel like the members specialists and the front check counter should communicate better. Share the programs, like what is new etc. Because non of this would've happened if the gentleman at the front counter knew. Also, I feel like the employees are there to "get a pay check" or to "live by" etc.. who exactly knows. 99% of the time, I see miserable employees that don't want to be there. Especially SOUTH ak club. If you're miserable working where you at, find a different job! Us, members don't need to feed off of your unenthusiastic attitude. Ignoring members, or customers (if you will) can lose business. Again, I love the gym- just the employees can use a little improvement.
The Alaska Club South is okay. If you are considering this place for family use with small children or for swimming lessons, you will notice that there are only 2 family change rooms, where you can actually be with your 4 year old, without having to let him/her be alone in the adult dressing rooms while changing. These two small changing rooms fill out quickly when there are swimming lessons going on. In winter days you either run to get one of them or your child will be freezing withough warming up in a shower unless you let your child walk alone in the adult dressing rooms, with no way to supervise him. As a mom with a boy I find this very inconvenient. These rooms often have mulfunctioning showers and are muddy on the floors. They do not get as much attention as the adult changing rooms, and despite of reporting broken shower heads for months on a row, they still do not repair them. If you have a more convenient pool nearby, avoid the classes at this location.
As I type my review I'm in the gym. This gym at 5:44 P.M on a Monday Night has currently 39 Men, and 2 women in the MAIN area. Ages 14-21 and a few 29-32 year olds (like 3). If I didn't have my wife talk me into this place I would have never come. 1 hamstring machine (weighted, not cabled) and I pay $140 a month. Its a Highschool GLEE movie in here. Parking just plain sucks. I might as well walk here from home. 17 year olds taking there shirts off and lifting up there clothes to reveal abs at 6pm on a school night doesnt please anyone. It's a typical family gym, parents drop $140 and there teenage kids hang out there, talk around the weights, walk literally 6 inches between you and others while you have 200 lbs above your head, but there not paying for it! This is Extremely dangerous of you care about that stuff and you want a $55,000 rotator cuff surgery plus a lifetime of ruined shoulder limitations. A side note, I understand its a locker room however there are people who hang out unclothed in the locker rooms soaking wet, shaving, there hairy wet bodys and business LITERALLY all over the counters, no respect for anyone around. I've missed touching these unclothed hangout men many times within inches. There's kids around, put some clothes on, AND GYM, put a mailed letter release out as it's rediculous. If your serious about lifting skip this one!
Great place for family work out
The place is filthy. Pool was cloudy, loose weights all over the floor, overpriced, broken treadmills, dirty. Dirty. Dirty. Disappointed.
My favorite gym!!!
VERY EXPENSIVE, and so many lures and traps in the contract. They will try their best pitch at you to get you signed up, but after that, don't expect much from them. Swimming pool water quality is poor (visibility in water less than 10-15 ft), not enforcing the lap time schedules (Children are out of control).
They keep having open house , makes it difficult to use the gym. And classes are so full you can't take one unless very early. Will be going somewhere else when contract done.
The Gym is okay as far as gyms go I guess. Way overpriced, and the billing department is very poorly run with constant errors and terrible customer service, I would be weary of giving them your payment information. I will NEVER return, you can get the same thing for $10 at other gyms. #GFYAKCLUB
So much to do
I signed up for Alaska Club solely so I could work out while someone entertained my kids. My kids *refuse* to go to the Alaska Club because the play area and play areas staff are so horrible. They were told not to run. They were told they can’t play on the play structure. They were not allowed to play in the outdoor play area or even watch a video. I don’t know what they expected them to do while they were there. When I returned to the play area to collect my children I was dressed down in front of other club members and told his terrible my children were (they ran and threw balls in the ball pit???) I don’t know what they were supposed to do while they were there. Save your money. I regret every time I return to the Alaska Club.
Expensive for what you get. No machines available. The locker rooms are disgusting. Would not recommend.
I like this gym. It’s fun and motivating to exercise for better health. The staff is friendly and helpful. I always recommend this place to my family and friends.
My brother and I live 5 min away and we go to the location on Tudor. This location is not worth it.
Since the addition of the racquet courts, parking went from bad to unacceptable and the men's adult locker went from busy to way overused. Forget using this location at peak times - overcapacity doesn't come close to accurately describing the situation and for the price, there are too many other better options. Calendar is marked for the day my contract runs out (since they charge a huge fee to cancel).
Better watch your account my wife has membership. She was using a trainer Cammeron she told him she would be out of town on medical and asked for membership to be put on hold this happened twice i heard the conversation THEY CONTINUED to take full amount out of her account. When asked to take care of it they " had to contact accounting" to this day they have not reimbursed her for well over 3k in dues . Cammeron still received paycheck even though she told him she would be gone for extended amount of time
They have a good gym and good classes with a great teachers But unfortunately I had a terrible experience If you not American and you struggle with the language, keep your eye open. They ofered me a PT a valuation And he tricked me! To a contract for 6 monts ans more money that I was already paying. I tried in all clubs to cancel and explain that I have problems with the language. But didn't give a damn and I had to payed even with me saying that I don't want a pt I payed all the money and u never had pt class They just care about the money not the clients
This review went all the way to 5 start because of their ability to say "We are sorry". Reading the previous reviews made me think that I was going to have the same results, but somehow in my case I was pleased to see the outcome of it. I have been having issues with my membership for months. I complained and I wasn't happy at all with the service, but I kept paying what requested. Month after month. And no resolution to be seen anywhere. This time I spoke with Khae, from the membership department in the South, and she explained what could have happened during all these past months in a way that made sense. It did not feel like she was giving an excuse, but more like a reasoning so I could understand it. If I have to be honest...she made me realize that I could also have done a little bit more from my side to resolve the issue. During the next days, I was busy, like maybe all of us, and I did not do what she suggested. However, she followed up on the problem and she reached out several times to see if she could help me. I finally did what she suggested. Sure enough, after I followed her instructions, I got an email back from June, from accounting. In less than 48h, I had not just another reply (a really good one, actually), but a resolution too!! No "yes, but", no excuses. A simple "We are sorry", "this is what I am going to do" followed by a "this is what I did" the next day. I even had refunds done in 48h. This person's speed responding and the way all was handled really surprised me. Thank you Khae and June.
I love that Alaska Club is expanding its yoga options, and the price is equivalent to specialty gyms. I considered dropping our membership for a yoga gym, but we get so much more at Alaska Club. They are trying to refresh all the facilities and keep up with trends like cross fit. We will stick for a while.
The South club has great group classes with great instructors. I wish there were more. My sons like the weights and my husband likes the pool. The grandkids do fine in childcare. There are conditions that are sometimes less than ideal like room temps, pool temps, crowded facility...But overall, the Alaska Club is good for our whole family that uses it all, classes, open gym, pool, hot tub, sauna, steamroom, exercise equipment, massage...
One of my favorite gyms. BOBBI WILLIAMS is the BEST PERSON to give you a tour and sign up with. The SUMMIT is heaven!!
Do not use, especially for the childcare. They do not have adequate staff for child care, 1 poor girl working with 12+ kids including at least 4 under 2 years old. I only felt comfortable leave my toddler there a few times when my 8 year old was able to go and keep an eye on him. At one point I witnessed an infant lying on the floor while other children JUMPED over her! The worker was holding another infant at the time. The only change I ever noticed was at a later point a sign on the door saying center was full. This unfortunately meant my $187/month was wasted and I had to leave bc the only other option for my kids was the pool...Which was not available bc of a class going on. Now I am stuck paying for the duration of my 12 month contract bc that's how they make their money instead of actually having useable services that you are charged for.
The gym and equipment is fine but one of the reasons we got the family membership was for our kids to be able to swim. Open swim schedule is rarely ever followed. They are supposed to have 2 lifeguards but we are lucky to even have one on shift. With only one lifeguard they can't run the waterslide or even open the lanes for open swim. If you plan on using the pool for kids don't count on Alaska Club South to ever follow their schedule.
Wow, some of these comments are pretty harsh. I've been a member for a few years with experiences at both Summit and South. Yes, they charge more than we would like, but they offer a lot if you utilize it. With the traffic that they have, I feel they maintain the facility and equipment well. I've never had an issue with customer service, but you can always request to see a manager and work with the situation. My only complaint is that they do not complete my work out for me - I have to do that part.
Great facility with state of the art equipment! I will say that some of the employees did not have a great attitude....
They have a wonderful assortment of equipment and tanning rooms and free weights. Amazing assortment of exercise classes. Atmosphere is calm and relaxinga
Crowded with all the usual people with terrible gym etiquette. Alaska Club itself will charge you a $500 early membership cancellation fee if you decide to leave. Overall terrible business to associate yourself with.
My favorite gym
TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE,
Fun
Expensive, but nicer than most gyms throughout the country.
East sucks , but you guy's are awesome
I go here mon-fri. If you looking for a gym head here. They got a place called the summit in the back for 21 and over. Very nice. Always clean.
I love it here, and would rate it 4 stars... But every morning that I come here the damn equipment isn't where I can find it. That's the only complaint I have, they need to make a policy that states you need to put the damn equipment back where you found it when you're done.
Way overpriced, but excellent amenities
Love, love, love. Totally worth it if you use the gym regularly. The childcare center has amazing ladies and a few fellas that really engage the kids in coloring activities, games and teach the kids how to play nicely together. There are great pools at most locations including a splash park at the Eagle River location. Don't let the negative reviews stop you from trying. I have happily been a member for close to a decade.
Its Alaska Club. They are expensive. But you get what you pay for.
Great child care program, our daughter loves going here!
Like all other Ak Clubs, ridiculously expensive and they BULLY you into yearly contracts.
Don’t let the bad reviews mislead you!!! By far the best gym I have ever got a membership at, but as said before, they will not do your work out for you - you have to bring your motivation from home! Staff is always super friendly, always welcoming and helpful. Big thank you to Martin who explained every single detail of our membership and benefits patiently, we have been enjoying awesome workout days playing racquetball, swimming, joining the classes and working out on the machines! Alaska Club South and Summit have all new machines that always work and you never have to wait for, offer tons of classes that comes with the membership - plus Seth, Sarah, Steven, Madison, Kelly, Heather, Kylie, Kobe, Harold and the sweet girl from Membership always welcome us with a big smile! Thank you Alaska Club!
