Great fun place to eat and hang out! We had my son's 23rd Birthday dinner here and did the indoor golf. His favorite! The food is so delicious! And presented so beautifully. The atmosphere is rustic with beautiful wood and brick. Nice dining experience! Will return again!
I give this poor review with mixed emotions. My wife and I just left the restaurant on February 17, 2019 around 6:30 pm. This is the 4th time we have been there. This time was very disappointing. Although the food is good and poor service can be excused occasionally, this time borders on egregious. Here is what happened. - We excused the fact that our waitress was inattentive when she took a while to take our food order. - We excused the fact that the waitress said she would send someone to change the table-side TV channel when she took our drink order but forgot. (My wife doesn’t enjoy MMA fighting while dining - go figure). - We excused the fact that my wife’s burger order was severely undercooked (with blood on the plate) even though she ordered it medium. (They took it back and gave her a new one.) - We even excused the fact that the waitress forgot my beer order and it was only brought 10 minutes later when I mentioned it to the supervisor that brought my wife’s new burger. (The supervisor said she wasn’t charging me for the beer) We somewhat sympathized with the waitress when she apologized and said it was a bad night, she got busy, she is getting old, and she sometimes forgets. What I have a hard time excusing is the fact that after presenting us with a detailed bill, and after taking my credit card, we discovered that we were charged $10 more than the original bill. Exactly $10. After bringing it to the attention of the supervisor. We were told that it was a mistake and the waitress charged our table for someone else’s drink. The resolution was to credit my card for the erroneous overcharge and present me with an actual correct bill - along with an apology. I’m 66 years old. We have dined out thousands of times. I can’t recall ever having additional charges added to my bill after presenting my credit card. I leave the restaurant with the feeling that I was treated like: Sorry you had a bad night. We got our money. Hope to see you again. Maybe it’s just me. I am not the kind of person that is looking for something for nothing. However my wife and I left this place with a bad taste in our mouth tonight. I feel compelled to write this review and warn others to be aware. ——————————————————————————————————————————- In fairness and as a follow up, I have changed my rating to 4 stars. The GM called me today to thank me for bringing this incident to his attention. He assured me that he investigated the incident has taken steps to ensure that this does not happen again. I believe he is proud of what he and his people are doing and how far they have come in a short period of time. Baring this isolated incident, so am I. It is rare to get bad service or food at Valley of the Eagles. It is also rare to get a follow-up apologetic call from a restaurant Manager. FYI - I was not offered nor did I accept any gratuity for changing my review.
Still not fully matured. Some awkward rides between holes. Bar and proshop area really interesting with several video simulators. Could be a great night out in the winter. Overall, it's going in the right direction.
This place is a gem!!!! The food was decent, not great, but good. The seating and the atmosphere are phenomenal. Service was impeccable!!!! Our server Marshae was very friendly and very helpful with the menu and any questions we had. We will definitely be back, thank you for such a great evening!!!
The golf course itself is great, one of the best I've ever played. I am an occasional golfer and have only played in Ohio. It is a Nichlaus course. The Black River glitches 11 of the 18 holes with some nice views. The driveway is a mess, they've only been open for a week dio maybe they'll fix it. The cart path is all gravel and narrow in some spots. I was there for a golf outing. The steak was perfect and the lobster trail was good. The restaurant looks really nice. The cut some trees down on the course and used some of them to make tables.
Staff got 5 of 5 stars... Course is subpar. Horrid layout. Drove past the 1st hole four times on the front 9. No rhyme or reason to layout. Tee off towards the clubhouse and parking lot on 9, almost kill a landscaper as they are 220 yards away. Needs major changes, layout on top!
Food was just ok, server occupied with something else. First visit was a better experience. This was my second visit. I probably won't go back for dinner.
The black river tavern has great food and drinks at reasonable prices with an incredible view and atmosphere. The staff is friendly and accommodating, ask for Chevon!
Looking forward to 2018!
Played indoors on the simulator. As we played, a server offered us refreshments and we ordered. Service was excellent and the prevailing attitude was very good by employees.. Definitely will go back and recommend others to go there.
Great food
Great staff. Once they are done finishing some details this will be a top Ohio public course.
Beautiful course very challenging
A great course!
Well worth the wait for the course to reopen. The course is scenic and well-maintained. The black river tavern is beautiful and the staff is top notch. James in the pro shop is the best!
Great place. Restaurant is excellent.
This will be five stars when it grows in. They are putting in underground water lines today
Staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. Great course layout and condition!
Great course and awesome staff!!!
Love this place...pork chop was different this time though! Prefer the 1 that is just like a Flinstone bone.
Save your money the course is 2 to 3 years away from being what you expect. GPS devices do not work and only markers are at 150. Fairways need more time to fill in. Bar and food were great.
Tee to green is nice but the common grounds need help, cart paths are gravel which was horrible. I feel like I was on the baseball diamond all day.
A1 spot, great food, beautiful golf course and more to come
A little rough at this time. Needs another season.
Great people and place is looking good
We went to the Black River Tavern. The atmosphere was great. The food was amazing. I had the Autumn Pork rib chop. It was really good but the bussell sprouts that came with it were to die for.
Great service and food!
Friendly people here
One of the worst experiences I’ve had on a golf course. Grounds crew guy was taking a pee behind a tee box that I was on, course is in horrible condition and it looks like they have goats doing the maintenance
Tough course, well maintained, great prices, friendly staff.
Had a Great Dinner tonight
For a Troon course not in good shape the layout is crazy not impressed
Great service and excellent food!
Attractive space, congenial wait staff, menu complex enough to have something for everybody but compact enough to make choosing easy, new twists on entrees, burgers and salads.
Haven't played course yet. Have been doing the golf simulator league and we are having a blast. The assistant pro James is very friendly and nice. Restaurant is wonderful. Great food, great service. Great atmoshpere !
Still needs some growing in but it will be good. You can't hit driver on every hole
Am excited
A really fun course to play a little new and still growing in. The greens were in great shape and offered a good putting challenges . One bad the is the cart paths are all gravel and dirt and therefore you kick up a lot of dust
Nice place. Big change from the Spring Valley Club. Food is great and our server was amazing. If possible ask for Kadie. She went above and beyond for us.
This was probably our 5th visit to Black River Tavern, and it has not disappointed!!! The food is amazing and at very reasonable prices! The décor with all the stone, brick and wood is mesmerizing. I loved hearing how the tables are made out of wood from the golf course, not letting any wood go to waste. In addition, the one wall made of differing sizes and all the species of trees with their rich tones is very intriguing and unique!
They took a perfectly good course and totally screwed it up. Removed over 1000 trees that made it a beautiful course. Dont waste your money. Nothing there to see.
Very nice course just needs to mature a bit. Loved it.
I work there it is a very nice course. Come check it out
Really nice addition to Ohio golfing.
Staff was friendly, but when I step up to the first tee I don’t want to be asked “you guys ready to lose some balls?!” From the starter, throws off the whole game. Also feel liked they rushed the course, my golf bag needed power washed from the gravel paths. Not worth the money, and it’s not appealing at all for a jack nicklaus course. Probably won’t be back.
Beautiful and nice dining facility
Will be a great course in about 2 years
The black River tavern at valley of the eagles is the best local restaurant in elyria. They have gourmet burgers, sandwiches, and entrees that stand toe to toe with any other high end restaurant in Lorain county. Burgers are around 10 dollars. Steaks are $20-30. All worth every penny. The building itself is really nice. woodwork is hand carved from local trees. They have an entertainment area with golf based games that look like a lot of fun.
I am assuming these positive reviews are all from employees?? If you wrote a positive review of this course and actually played it, shame on you for feeling obligated to the Nicklaus name (Ok, I admit I felt obligated too, that's why I gave it an extra star). To set the record, I played here today, and actually played quite well, so this is not a disgruntled review after a bad round. I have played a minimum of a dozen Nicklaus designed courses in my day, some famous, some not so famous. But they all had two things in common, they were all amazing and memorable! With a Nicklaus course, you know you are getting a top notch layout, top notch design. This course is anything but. This is not a matter of a new course being a little rough around the edges. This course needs the combination of a ton of work to still be completed, and at least a full year of continuous care and maintenance before it should have been opened. Regardlesss of the unfinished condition, the layout has no character and individual holes are easily forgotten. The layout is scattered, clostrophobic, and at times very unsafe! There are several holes that are just entirely too close to other holes. It's too bad the multi-millions spent on the clubhouse couldn't have been spent on the golf course.
Great specials and good food.
Great service,horrible Lake Erie Perch.
Incredibly delicious
Great place, food and drinks taste good and big portions.. you don't have to be a member to stop in either
Challenging course. Plenty of tough greens with sand traps that will dare you to clear them from the tips. Fairways were average in terms of condition. Clubhouse and bar seem to be very nice.
The course was challenging and in great shape, in a couple of spots you can tell it's a newer course but it's still in outstanding shape. The staff was top notch and when I called to make my tee time, I was told about them airifing the green even though my tee time wasn't for two weeks after and they had done it the week before I had called. I took my father there for his birthday and we all had a great time, the only disappointment was that I had forgotten to make reservations for the black river tavern and we didn't have time to wait an hour for a table but that wasn't in anyway their fault it was totally on me. They were friendly and curtious and the course lived up to expectations. We plan on playing again and the next time make reservations for the end of the round.
A little pricey, but I'm a senior and loved the course. It still has that country club feel. Challenging and well manicured yet friendly and helpful. One needs to play it more than once to get comfortable with the terrain.
Nice course. Greens were slow. I’m sure they will be better next year. Growing pains. It’s a course that needs to be played more then once. It was my first time and not sure if where to hit it to.
What an incredible golf course. When it matures it will be one of the best in Ohio.
Great restaurant
Bartender wasn't sure if they offered Ginger ale , felt Sierra Mist was a suitable substitute
Oh so beautiful when specially Summer weather here!
Could be 5 stars in another year or two. Just needs to grow in a little bit. Layout was fun and staff was very nice. Price was a little high for a course that is not really complete yet.
Clubhouse renovation looks great. Course is still a little rough and greens are rolling slow.
Beautiful new place. Nice restaurant and good food. Definitely worth the visit
Just renovated, still getting things up and running; but the food and atmosphere was amazing. Definitely worth checking out, you won't be disappointed.
Great atmosphere & awesome appetizers!
Great course. Very friendly, professional staff.
I have always had good food here.
Challenge it is
Newly renovated golf course & clubhouse of fun atmosphere. Course needs maturity & parking lot is a mess, just takes time to come together.
Great Choclatini and Ruben sandwich. Pretty quiet too.
Great area great job keeping it up chad
Extremely disappointed, however hopeful for the future. The layout of the course has so much potential, however the carts were extremely basic and for a Troon course you would expect GPS. They did not even have a club cover for when it rains. There was no cart gal/guy on the course, on a Saturday mid-day which I found upsetting. The round was extremely slow, took over 5 hours and we were waiting on every hole as a 4-some. The conditions of the course I can overlook as I'm sure it needs to be matured, however important to note that the greens are slow and fairways are beat up in many areas. Being a Nicklaus design and Troon course, I had much higher expectations.
First and last time I will play this course. Very poorly maintained. I paid top dollar to golf and was very disappointed. Golf cart broke down, would only take credit and at the turn at 10:30 no snacks were available.
Beautiful Golf Course very nice dining area
Needs to grow in and average layout
Is this club going to have caddies?
Still doing some work on the place. The coarse was in great shape
There was zero service and zero customers so I really don't understand.
Played here on Saturday under the $40 preview deal. It's worth a look at that price for sure, however, I will be waiting at least a year, if not 18 months, before I head back. There is a lot of maturity that needs to happen for the course overall, but most especially on the stretch of holes from 13-16. The area to the right on 14 is totally hard pan right now and will need at least a year of growth. The 15th fairway was riddled with crabgrass growing in. The holes located between the road and the clubhouse (6-9 and 17-18) were in the best shape with only 7 needing some real growing in (to be fair we weren't able to play 9 due to drainage having been installed that week, but it looked nice). The layout is decent as there are only a few holes that truly take driver out of your hands. The clubhouse looks like it will be incredible once completed and the staff was very friendly but especially the starter and the food and beverage manager who took time to ask a lot about our experience. There is no reason this shouldn't become one of the top public tracks in NE Ohio, it just needs time and expectations should be set accordingly until the course has the ability to mature.
Best golfing experience in NEOH I've ever had. What golf course has their own craft beer as well? Worth the trip from wherever you call home.
Beautiful place
GREAT FOOD GREAT SERVICE.WILL GO AGAIN
It's going to be great if all the up dates go through. Fast greens good lay out still needs some work. Had a nice time. Inside very nice and friendly.
Nice place... huge improvement over the old Spring Valley. Met some friends... appetizers , drinks and dinner we will be back.. Not a Golfer but the course looks beautiful...
Fun layout. Will be a top course in the area in no time. Look forward to my next round.
Awsome
Just had a 10am tee time yesterday and this course is humbling. Been a while sense I've seen that many sixes. Its still under construction so a lot of dust in the air till the cart paths are finished. I would of payed an extra $100 to bring the starter with me. He was the most informative and personable starter I have ever spoken with. He took the time to explain the layout and things to watch for which helped pace out the players on the course. We never had to wait on a hole and no one caught up to us either. Simply there starter did an amazing job. The course itself has some rough and bare spots but nothing that isn't expected for a new course, with a season of growth and a winter to rest it is going to be the most beautiful course in the area. We did the $40 18 yesterday and it was worth every penny even with the condition of construction. The starter also told us that it is going to be $60 next year when it's finished, which is still an amazing price for the course. Lastly I can say jack makes some evil bunkers. The course as is now is 4.75 of 5 stars but by next year it will be an easy 5 and the staff puts it well over the top of any course in the area. I will be back soon. (I believe I have found a new home course)
Great revamped course. Formerly Spring Valley Country Club, redesigned by Jack Nicklaus Design, this public course is beautiful and challenging. I lost about a dozen balls on my first round. I'd give it five stars if not for the high cost of a round/membership. I hope they succeed, but I'll probably stay away until it's affordable.
Shows promise... can definitely tell it's a Nicklaus design... huge risk/reward options... needs time to mature. Club house service definitely needs work! 10 minutes to grab a water at turn while rangers giving grief about pace.... get priorities straight!
Played it yesterday great track!!! Even with all the rain they fairways and tees were all mown nicely. Some holes are kinda blah and plenty of good holes. Scenery is great!!! Plays very fair yet challenging look forward to playing it when its dry and greens aren't punched!!! Seems greenskeeper knows a little something!!!
Very nice and beautiful course. ..
Gorgeous views and 5 star dishes
This place is going to be epic when it opens! I cannot wait!
This is a Jack Nicklaus golf course that took four years to remodel and has been open for two seasons. It plays well with some very challenging holes but needs some work. It is also very scenic as it plays in the Black River valley area. There are more then a few bare patches that need seeding. It needs a lot of just "sprucing up", trimming ditch areas etc. The day we played there were a lot of maintenance staff sitting on their equipment not doing anything. The cart paths are gravel and could use some maintenance. I know they have been instructed to not mow while golfers are playing the hole but they need more productivity out of their staff. Typically on most courses the staff is on the job by 5 or 6 AM,. start on the first hole and stay ahead of the golfers. Way too much down time. We live on two golf courses - one in Ohio and one in Florida so we see and are very attuned to golf course maintenance.
Great Food, Friendly Atmosphere, priced right. It's all good. And golf simulators you can play inside!
Exceptional service, ask for Katie. Good food, beautiful scenery.
Decor was good but I ordered a steak and it wasn't seasoned at all
It is Funny that You ask, because My Crew was on the other side of the Creek at Cherry Ridge, having a Blast and Not Going Broke. Your Lame approach of moderately pricing 5 holes of Golf is a Weak Attempt of trying to make the ridiculous fees that You think are fair. #Really #Get A Grip
A Great atmosphere. Food was good
We went to the Black River Tavern to have dinner at this location and if there were 6 stars, they would definitely deserve it! The food is wonderful and the place is absolutely gorgeous! This "IS" my new favorite place to eat!!
Highly disappointed in the course. I Couldn’t wait to take my father in law and he said he would never play there again. The course was in terrible shape, the tee boxes were cement, broke numerous tees trying to get them into the ground. The fairways were burnt out, like hitting off of cement. Most disappointing is the landscaping, it is not maintained at all! You can’t walk into the taller grass areas because they are covered in 3 foot tall pricker bushes. The bunkers are full of rocks and terrible sand. The only holes in decent shape are the ones closest to the road, so passerby’s can see them, the further away from the road you get, the worse the conditions. For being a Nicklaus design, I was expecting a lot more.
Too new to criticize.
We weren't golfing, but got to spend some seriously lovely time sitting on the patio drinking cocktails and wondering if we should take up golf. Esthetically stunning.
Not your neighborhood bar. The place seems to be mostly set up for the golfers of the course. That said, the place is very nice, they used a lot of wood and brick that was found on the course when it underwent renovations in the bar. The food is upscale, service is nice, drinks are good but it comes at a pretty high price. You and your friend will have a tough time getting out of there for less than $65. This is a fact. I've been there 3x lowest bill was $65 highest was $115 but another couple joined us that night and i picked up their miller lite bottles. I think they each had 3 beers. It's Definitely worth a trip to check it out, but its not the kind of place you want to goto everyday!
Still early with more growing in needed but greens are in pretty good shape. Currently only using 2 of the teeing areas.
