The Princeton Club has gotten SO much better since the stodgy old days of required coat and tie, where the stone in the floor at the entrance to the former (formerly all-male Grill Room) proclaimed "Where women cease from troubling and the wicked are at rest." The stone is gone, the Grill Room and Tiger Bar have been moved upstairs and revamped to be at once modern yet still traditional, and there have been numerous other improvements made throughout the club. One of my favorites is the outdoor terrace upstairs where "Wet Wednesdays" are held in the summer with cocktails and live music; often inviting alumni from other schools. These are great, fun social gatherings. The food at the club, in the Tiger Grill and the adjacent, more formal Madison Room, is surprisingly good; fresh and delicious good old American food--not cheap, but reasonably-priced, fresh and well-prepared (steaks and seafood are great); and the service is friendly and excellent. The cocktails are generous and some of the best in the city (Sebastian makes the world's best gin martinis), and there is cheese and crackers and veggie and dips offered free during happy hour. Since moving two years ago to Asia from NYC, I now use the Princeton Club as my "home away from home" when visiting NYC 3-4 times a year. The rooms aren't fancy and a bit old fashioned in a cozy and charming way (except for those on the more expensive and luxurious Governor's Floor, which are comparable to a 4-5 star hotel) but are clean and well serviced, with extremely comforable beds. Rates now vary, based on demand, but are MUCH more affordable than those at other Manhattan hotels, particularly during times of high demand (tip: reserve early!)--with summer weekend rates starting at around $150-175/night). And you can't beat the location, on 43rd street just off 5th, which is convenient to Broadway theatre, Grand Central Station and mid-town offices. Club dues are on a sliding scale, depending on year of graduation and whether one is a NYC resident, suburban or out-of-towner, and offer ver good value. There are great, fun events, from talks and lectures to black-tie galas to trips to the ballpark. What I like most abut the club, though, is the energy: it's gone from being stuffy, back in the day, to a club that has many young members and a vibrant energy; where old grads and new can mingle and enjoy a fun and relaxed, yet traditional, atmosphere.
