Was told at this course that I could not share clubs with my sister. I was told this was because observers are not allowed and not safe to just walk the course. However there were walkers all over the course that could be in the same situation. In my 18 years playing golf, I have never heard this rule and have played at several private clubs and public courses that allow this. I was in from out of town which was the reason I didn’t have clubs. When asking the manager why that is happened today he was very rude and condescending. He also asked several times if we needed pull carts but was not asking men if they needed them. The course Itself was in TERRIBLE shape. Completely brown every hole with several holes. It was very overpriced. 2 players playing 9 holes walking was $45.

Course 1 is challenging and in good shape. Could be better if people actually replaced divots and fixed ball marks. Maybe higher greens feed for course 1 might keep undesirables off

This is my local track and, what a gem. Classic Donald Ross design kept in nice shape for a muni. Two courses, course 1 is better. A lot of thinking throughout the course, just a ton of fun. Totally relaxed vibe, zero stuffiness. The hiking trails are also gorgeous and dogs are allowed. This model of golf courses serving the entire community is huge in Scotland and Ireland, and I couldn’t love it more. Yes there are beginners, yes it can be a long round, if you’re gonna cry about it, join a country club.

Ponky has 36 holes ( course # 1 & # 2 ) I'd like to focus on # 1 , as the current restoration project focuses on most of the course. When completed and ready for play in the fall of 2015, course # 1 will be a BEAR...... The premium will be on driving as you must keep it in the short grass or you are in the jungle. The restoration actually added about 1-2 feet of elevation to the fairways, meaning if you miss it, the results will put you down in the amazon... (beware gators...!!!) Make no mistake, it is going to play tough and probably slow...as lot's of balls will be used.... Championship caliber...? don't think so as the length is just not there.... But # 1 will be once again on everyone's play list...

Michael Finnegan

Good course for price. Decent layout, needs more grass around greens. More dirt than you'd like to see.

Mark Vlahos

Course doesn't deserve 1 star , but that's the lowest you can rate . Course #2 is an absolute disgrace. It is only May and they have already lost the greens. The Tee boxes... or lack there of are mostly dirt, and the ones that have so called grass, are 5 inches long . The fairways are all cart tracks, mud, rocks, and weeds. There are more divots than grass. There is no 1st or 2nd cut of rough. It is all 7 inches long no matter where it is. Now on to Course #1. They invested 7 million dollars into a so called revamp. The grounds crew has no idea how to properly maintain a golf course. The rough is so long it holds water which in turn makes everything sloppy. It has carried over into most of the fairways . Around the greens are terrible. There are rocks in the sand traps along with water and weeds. The greens and fringes are not maintained properly and are now showing signs of rapid deterioration. They surely will be lost and looking like course #2's shortly. So to sum this up. If you enjoy playing from mudd and gravel, and putting on greens that are as smooth as asphalt then this is the place for you. It is an absolute disgrace and waste of money. It looks like North Korea is using it as a nuclear test site. Oh and not to mention if you decide to hit the range, be prepared to hit balls that are undoubtedly from the 1990's.

Gourse 2 has really bad fairway condition.

James Fiske

Martin McCrory

Inexpensive. Greens were slow and in rough shape. Evidently 3pm is too late to take a cart for 18. No water fountains on the front nine. There's no reason to play this course when nearby Braintree Muni is priced in the same ballpark and is miles better.

Ted Riley

Played the new course today, it is sad to see what poor condition it was in. Fairways burnt or in some cases crab grass. Some greens have had some sort of issue, disease? Sand traps not maintained, a few have more grass than sand. For the money we paid I can't complain, but come on MDC you should do much better

Robbie Vogel

I will never play here again. The course could be great - it's got "great bones" as they say about houses - but the upkeep is atrocious. Fairways ran the gamut from muddy to sandy to just plain NOT THERE - that's right, on two holes (the 17th being one) there were simply NO fairways, just a collection of weeds, crabgrass, and shorter rough down the middle of the hole. A few good holes along the back nine and a $30 weekend fee for 18 holes do not make up for the ABYSMAL wait times on every hole while playing behind very bad golfers who took 5-7 practice swings, only to hit 15-yard dribblers. This was the rule, rather than the exception, as I saw multiple groups with these sorts of players. Staff was friendly but not golf-intelligent, they are employees of the Dept of Conservation and Recreation as the course is on public land in the Blue Hills. There was one super cute girl at the snack bar, which was nice. Greens were good, rough was alright, sand traps were an embarrassment - not well-defined, concrete and rock showing through in some places. Also, a ton of blind tee shots which is really tough to deal with on a new course. There were also massive drainage pipes just sitting behind several greens, along with a large amount of standing water and muck. If you want to play a quick 9 after work, this might be ok, provided no one else is there, but I'm guessing you'll be dealing with a long wait for a very poorly maintained golf course.

This place is terrible!!!! Tee boxes clumpy and uneven. Fairways have ten different kinds of grass growing, some not very nice. You could be a foot off the fairway and have a hard time finding your ball. Greens were like putting on shag carpet. Slow, slow, slow!! Won't be back!!!!

This is a pretty nice course but a lot of spots that need upkeep. There was too many brown spots in the fairway and on the greens. Also, a lot of the greens had weeds on them. But, still a decent course and would recommend giving it a try.

Awesome fun.

Elliott McCrory

Played the front nine of the first course. It was pretty bad. The fairways were as poor as I have seen ("winter rules" are a must), the greens were super slow and uneven. The tees were in bad shape (no sand to fill divots, so divots everywhere!). The layout of the holes was interesting, but a little silly at times: most tee shots had to be 200-240 yards and straight ... Yawn! No drinkable water, so bring your own. Actually, don't bother to play this course.

Andrew Wilbur

Great layout but they fail on the greens and bunkers.. Put some money back into the course for some sand, a roller for the greens and have some water stations so you can get a drink..

Kenneth L'Ecuyer

Play course 1...it is in good shape and same price as course 2...course 2 is a waste of money

Called yesterday to confirm a tee time and they did not tell me they were aerating the green. AFTER paying for our group they told us greens were aerated. To further worsen the experience, the course was significantly overgrown with at least 40 percent of the fairways being dead and brown. Also greens covered in crab grass. All this would have been acceptable if they weren't over 40 bucks to play on this significantly sub-par course (see what I did there).

Nathan Fisher

Richard Zeigler

Patricia O'Brien

Beautiful layout, greens need to be replaced, all deceased on course 2

Charles Ramsay

Great spot for a winter walk, cross country skiing, and snow shoeing.

Forrest Marvez

This review is only for course 2 which is currently a disaster. There are no fairways to speak off and tee boxes are sometimes not even marked. Most of our shots in what would normally be fairway required us to hunt for our balls in 3-4 inches of thick grass or mud. The greens are in better shape. Course 1 looked to be in better shape but Course 2 was miserable and we won't be back. The person we were paired with had been playing the course since he was a kid and said it was in the worst shape and inexcusable. Yes it's cheap, and generally easy to get a tee time but they need to rehab the course.

Course two is trash, poorly maintained, bad experience overall

Good golf course that can be a challenge for all skill levels. When I played the greens were incredibly slow and there was some standing water in the fairways.

It had been a few years since I played here, and was happy to find that they had restored Course 1 to its full 18 holes again. It's an inexpensive municipal course with a clubhouse. Greens and fairways have some brown areas. Still better than working.

5 star potential, but Ponky being Ponky finds a way to fall short. Nonetheless, it's a great old 36-holer (#1's a Donald Ross). You can walk 9 holes front or back of #2 for $19.

I was pretty excited to play this full course for the first time since it was reopened. Unfortunately they do not allow carts on course 1 the day we played for some reason. Also, we showed up at lunch time to find out there was no food or drinks available (renovations in process). Oh and as a kicker, not 1 water jug on the entire course.....really? Anyone who has played course 1 knows there is a bit of elevation to deal with especially on the last 3 holes. It was only $27 for 18 but I would pay extra for at least a dixie cup of water here and there. Regardless I'll go back for the nostalgia.

Ponkapoag is well laid out and challenging. This is not a wide open course set in the middle of cow field, but a difficult course cut through the various elevations of the Blue Hills. The course is multidimensional with good elevation changes which keeps it fun and challenging for all abilities. It is nestled in a well landscaped setting with mature vegetation. It’s not perfect as the sand bunkers are a bit worn, but then again the club is for the average America with limited funds who wants to play a good course, with considerate employees at a reasonable price and to that end, this is the best value, I am treated right and it’s why I play it more than any other course.

This golf course is misleading. I went there with my father two weeks ago to play golf. We played course one and it was in decent condition, it was a good time and we looked forward to coming back. We came back yesterday course one was closed and course two was open. We figured that course two would be in the same condition as course one. We were very wrong. They could not pay me to play course two. The entire course was filled with dead grass, there were almost no fairways to speak of. I felt like I was playing golf on a course that was foreclosed years ago. On hole 15 or 16 I can't remember there was a literal patch of dirt and rock in the middle of a fairway! Also the course was so hard that we couldn't even put our tees in the ground without tremendous difficulty. They charged us 19 dollars for some of the worst golf I have had has the misfortune of playing. I can go on but you get the point that ponkapog two is a disgrace to golf. Who ever maintains that couse should look into the mirror every morning and feel shame. Course one is decent though if you can't play course one go home.

Jimmy James

Best course layout in the state. Worst course condition.

Joan Michaels

Love course 1. Great job refurbishing this great Donald Ross course. Too bad the locals who are used to a poorly maintained haven't figured out how to fix a ball mark, replace a divot, or rake a trap.

Charles George

They need to work on both courses. This place has gone down.

Forget course 2 greens r worst than fairways. Course 1 going downhill quick fairways and tee boxes are all burning up greens have ruts and weeds on them. Some Fairways surface are hard with no grass just dirt u will have to move ball around to find a nice spot to hit ball from. When course 1 reopened it was great. Plus it’s a forest all around the fairways filled with poison ivy and other stuff 5feet high just bring a lot of balls seeing how u won’t be able to find lost ones. No water stations but they do have a snack cart that comes around

The course really isn’t great. Last time we went there were multiple tees closed and the sandpits just had sand dumped in them. Not very well taken care of. Long grass clippings usually cover everywhere. It’s a hard 18 to walk FYI too. Redeeming quality is a good driving range for reasonable price and the price to play 18 isn’t bad.

Todd Austin

The folks are nice. The woods are jungles! Lots of "poison ivy" ... it's not fun when your ball is inches into the woods and you can ID it BUT under PI and untouchable! Also several tee box were missing tee markers. And crabgrass in sand bunkers and traps. Hard couse made unnecessarily harder.

So disappointed i played here 2 year's ago after the renovations and , being a member at Franklin Park , i was so excited about what i believed was to come having seen the transformation in Boston. Unfortunately the State dropped the ball the course now only 3 years in is losing the greens. the fairways are burnt out and the tee boxes are atrocious. public golf is viable if done correctly. this is not being done correctly. very sad i predict in 10 years it will be over grown and closed agian. The Commissioner of DCR should lose thier job over this disaster. this course has Bethpage potential So Sad

Ken Furfari

Course 1 is a disgrace, close it, walked off after 9, should have left earlier. Greens, tees, fairways all beyond poor.Don't even drive there, stay home.

Karmin Okeefe

Taking my first golf lessons with Knowledgeable Golf pros Mikey and Frankie. They have a diverse teaching style and can adjust easily and understand each person's need..and we are having alot of fun. Great place to learn the game!

Matthew Murphy

Course 1 is in great shape and you can't beat the price. Course 2 is in tough shape but probably will be cleaned up like 1 soon.

TheBriGuy

Two courses and affordable but the conditions are not good. We played course #1 and this is better than course #2. It is better than I remember but every other hole was in bad shape. If you want to get a few swings in and don't have a lot of cash, head over and it will do in a pinch.

John McCann

Good ! No 1 is coming . We need to support it for it to continue to improve ! Pretty good value for the money ! Great views today with the fall foliage !

Although it's a reasonable parkland setting, the course was not in very good shape when I played in the fall of 2017. The course is a part of the Blue Hills conservation area and on several holes there is cross through traffic of people hiking the Blue Hills on their way to the pond. The cost to play is reasonable for a Boston area course.
