The Pearl Club is probably the best kept secret in Owensboro, KY. Not knowing anything about it, we went there to play it because it was well rated and semi-private but with very reasonable rates. Not really a very long drive from town, maybe 15-20mins, it's located on 200 acres of nicely formed land that also houses the upscale Summit Homes community. I was impressed with the drive into the club, going through the Summit Homes area as really a treat. The brick clubhouse is very nice and nicely situated on the property. According to the golf shop pro there, the clubhouse is on the highest point in the county. I believe it because there are some great views of 9 and 18 and overlooking the countryside. Just by chance, being a two-some, we linked up with the two-some behind us. Man what luck that was! I asked if they knew the course and the one, Terry, said pretty well because he plays it about 3-4 times a week. I figured he must be a member. The other guy said, well, he owns the place, which I thought he was kidding. Ha! He wasn't. So we got to play the whole front nine with the owner himself, Terry, and the teaching pro, Don. He related some of the history to us over that couple of hours. The club had gone through some hard times because of a couple years of very bad freezes that tortured the fairways, but he had them reseeded in Zoysia which are really nicely grown in now. The zoysia helps set the ball up nicely, darn near almost like it's teed up. The condition of the fairways is really exceptional. The course layout is challenging, hilly, open and beautiful. I would call it a championship course, or at least at that level. You can walk the course if you're in good shape, but I'd recommend taking a cart. Since the overall cost is very modest, I would Highly recommend it. Some of the views from the tees are as nice as any I've seen anywhere. I thought #10 from the tee with its sweeping view down and dogleg left around a pond was something to behold. The greens are in beautiful shape, fast and putt very true. There's plenty of water to challenge you. And the par 5's are super nice, and a couple with some carry required before the green. The restaurant in the clubhouse is well laid out, clean and modern. The food is excellent with a broad menu and very reasonable prices. We had chicken quesadillas to split between us, though I heard from the pro that the blackened chicken sandwich is awesome. I really can't say enough good things about this golf club, the course and the owner. One of the most personable people I've ever met bought the club when it needed help, and he's brought it back to the quality level that it deserves. Kudos to him, his faith and passion and great business sense. Is this the Best kept golf secret in Owensboro, maybe in the region? I'd say - Definitely! We WILL be back!
