REVIEWS OF Wintonbury Hills Golf Course IN Connecticut

John Capobianco

The course is beautiful but the golf carts are terrible. We had to push by hand on the cart path because GPS shut it off.

Alan Stein

Tough course when it's windy, I'll be back, love the course condition

Tejas Pathak

Perfect course! Great staff! Well treated. Appreciate the staff, as they were very kind to my 5 yr old daughter.

Jenevie Beaumont

Was amazing great course

This is a fantastic track and the conditions meet "private club" standards. There is a great combination of long and short holes with significant elevations changes. The course is very playable which is not always the case with a Pete Dye design. This is a "lay of the land" track where the routing follows the natural landscape and you will used every club in your bag due to the elevation changes. I highly recommend this course

Excellent condition. Beautiful course.

Longest round of golf that I have ever played, 5 hours and 45 minutes. There were no marshals on the course and no effort to speed up play. We called the pro shop from the course and nothing was done. We will never return.

Wintonbury Hills Golf Course, rated 4-1/2 stars, is a championship layout that ranks with some of the best in Connecticut. This links-style and parkland course provides a wonderful test for your all-round game, with many attractive, skilfully crafted and challenging holes to enjoy. A must play if you are in the area.

Wintonbury is consistently my go-to course in the Hartford area - always exceptionally well-maintained, notably the greens (hence my confusion at the other review remarking about them being worn out - I've never seen that in the years I've been playing there). Never overly crowded and consistently helpful staff. Yes, there are restrictions on the carts in terms of where you can drive them (they warn you on the cart when you approach those spots) and they do slow down on some of the hills, but honestly, it's not that big of a deal. It doesn't detract from your round at all unless you are (for whatever reason) hyper-sensitive about it. These are fairly small matters in light of how good the course is.

A Hilton Head style Golf Course feel nestled in New England. Very impressed with this course

Nice layout, great potential. However, unless you like "Communist golf" stay away from this course. Don't bother using a cart, you will end up walking more than if you walk the course with a pull-cart. Automated golf carts, absurd course rules, and heavily worn greens are a deal breaker. For this kind of money I can name 10 courses that are better options. I have yet to see any mention of their absurd course rules on their webpage....apparently they prefer to keep these rules a secret until you arrive. Hey Wintonbury, you got me once, but I, and my 3 friends that played on Aug 8th, 2017, will NEVER be back.

Joe Coppola

Beautiful layout, tee times spaced out appropriately. Pace of place is 'OK'

Great time, great course!

Ryan Baker

great course. but there is no reason that a round starting at 7 am should take you 5 hours when you are the first out. had to wait for 30 minutes on the turn because they are pushing people off both tees until 9:15 and completely ruin the flow of the golf course making it way too backed up. Play in the afternoon.

Frank Magnante

Great track

Robert Tobiasz

Super golf course, reasonable rates. The Ranch for a better price.

Keith Vandal

One of the best tracks in CT and a very good value for the money. The front 9 is fairly forgiving with some shorter par 3s and 4s. The back 9 gets interesting with much longer par 4s that require accurate tee shots and longer seconds. If you haven't played it you should!

Played in a league here for 5 years and the course is always in great shape. Staff is very friendly and the bar is great. Very good food and the bartenders are always a lot of fun.

A hidden gem in central Connecticut! I recently relocated to West Hartford after spending 25 years at a club in NY. I have been reluctant to join another club because I'm not sure how long I'll be in the area. As a result, I've been visiting the local public courses (which there are many!). Not only is Wintonbury challenging, but the course is beautiful, well maintained, and the staff is great. I read some of the other reviews that are negative based on Wintonbury's grounds management and pace-of-play policies, but I am 100% in favor of what they do. For those of you who want play slow and spend five+ hours golfing and waiting for other groups ...this is NOT the course for you. But if you're like me and want to play top-tier golf in 4 - 4.5 hours and not play fairways that are trashed from allowing carts after heavy rains-then you should join Wintonbury! I prefer to walk this course with a pushcart, even though carts are included in the price and it's rather hilly.

Good fun course, in great shape

Great golf and bar

This is the best public golf course in New England. It offers a Pete Dye course designed for all levels of play set on a most attractive landscape that " Wows the eyes " . The restaurant has good food and drinks , it is located in a residential area and has a limited schedule when the golf course is less used ( winter ) .

Matthew Noe

Gary Morris

Grounds are the conditions of a private course. Very reasonable prices. A great play to play with a very knowledgeable, friendly staff.

Bill Burton

This is an extraordinary public golf course, immaculately maintained and professionally run. Not a place for hackers; no dressing like a slob or drunken escapades with your golf cart. The setup is very fair from each tee box, and the conditions are excellent.

Very good layout but as others have mentioned, the insane GPS/Cart restrictions, the extreme preference (and rudeness via the starter) to leagues and locals and the worsening conditions on the greens make this course a no return for me. I'd rather play Gillette Ridge for almost 1/2 the price down the road.

Ganesan Ravishanker

One of the best maintained golf course. The greens are fast, well maintained.

Eric Eggan

Our Danbury area Men's group played Wintonbury Hills in early September. The course was in great shape - well manicured. We play courses throughout New England and I think Wintonbury is the best we played in 2019. The course holds challenges for all skill levels. The staff was friendly and helpful. Can't wait to go back.

Michael

I always try to play the course when I travel to the area. I only have time to play 9 in the late afternoons, so for me to pay $38 at 5:30, that's a bit steep. But even taking that into account, I gave it 5 stars because the overall experience was top-notch. Great course conditions, spectacular views, carts w/ hole diagrams & GPS & an expansive practice area. It's a public course that has a private (or at least semi-private) "feel". If I lived in the area, NO DOUBT this w/b my home course. Courteous staff is a plus also, the pro was very friendly & accommodating (we specifically wanted to play the front 9 ...no issues!). I'll definitely play here again.

Juan Crespo

Love this course, it's worth the drive from the New Haven area. It's obvious this is one of the best in CT. Staff is super friendly! Well done guys.

Wide-open compared to some other Pete Dye courses. Gorgeous and challenging.

Decent course conditions for so early in the year. I wish they had mentioned they just aerated the greens though. It was wide open so we played multiple balls and never ran into another player all day. The usual tall grass had yet to come in so it made the usually challenging course fairly manageable.

Course is beautiful, but I've never felt so "managed". Ever. GPS on carts used to manage golfers, ex.: you cannot drive cart out of designated fairway areas, or the carts shuts down. In "dangerous" areas, carts are speed restricted via GPS locator. We let a threesone and later, a twosome play through. Even though there was no one behind us, the course marshall came to our location and chided us about our slow pace of play. I could see it if we were impeding other golfers, but we were not. Why bother us just so the course can meet it's speed metrics? What should've been a great round, spoiled. Won't be back...

As always, course is in great shape.

Nice lay-out and the course is always well taken care of. I wrote and earlier post about a few things that were bothering me, but after I wrote the first post, I immediately received an email from the pro addressing some of my issues. To do that goes a long way in my book and I've changed my rating from 3 stars to 5 stars. I'm sure the cost of running a private/public course is not cheap, but I would still like to see some good marketing from Wintonbury to attract players. Multiple play discounts, discounts for seniors on Fridays and some food and golf promotions, etc.

Chandler Mount

One of the best public courses in the state. Links style course is challenging but a lot of fun. Really feels like a private club with the food and beverage and service. Highly recommend if you're looking for a different style of course.
