Greens like shag carpet, only bumpy.

Lyman Orchards Golf Club is home to two championship layouts, the Player and Jones courses. Contrary to some opinion, we would give the edge to the Player course in terms of golfing interest and challenge. Gary Player's design offers a well-rated and always popular golf course.

Shalom Lemel

The greens were awful you should never charge a full price for the way these greens are not a very nice thing to do

Great visit on a great golf game

Bruce Davison

Great public golf course. They do an excellent job with charity outings. Greens were well prepped even early in the season. It rained after 4 hours and they gave out free passes.

Rich Halkyard

We love the Apple 9. Great little course for beginners.

Eric Belair

Challenging but fun course great for beginners a D novices alike.

Hear from golfers it's a great place

Johnny Crandall

My 9 year old daughter plays in the PGA Jr league at the Apple Nine course. This course is fantastic for children and beginners. There are 2 par 4 holes and the other 7 are reasonable par 3 holes. The coaches are great and the facility is top notch.

David Cabana

Greens were a little slow.

Alan Stein

Really improved over last year, the cart paths are fixed in some areas of need, the bunkers seem to have sand instead of dirt and rocks, and the grass is in fabulous shape

Steven Durst

Lyman orchards has two challenging courses. The Player course, which I play several times a year has an interesting layout, wrapping around an orchard and changing elevation. The fairways are wide enough for average golfers but scoring well requires well placed shots and proper course management. The course is well maintained.

Gary B

Gary Nolan

Poor grrens not healed from aeration in two months, rouvh not mowed over ankle deep easy to not find ball, dump aeration cores in rough so a muddy mess, sand traps are rock pits. The plus is 36 holes and food is ok. Shame it could be so nice. Pace of play is very slow because it hard to find balls. Expensive for poor condition.

Robert walsh

Good public course!

Michael Pink

This course was great!! This was our first time playing there and the starter could not have been nicer, he walked us through the course gave us a handout of what the color flags meant, and was really great!! The course was wonderful, and very challenging. It was in great shape and the greens were perfect, well I did miss read a few putts. The one thing I would suggest is a map of each hole on the score card, that would be very helpful in the middle of some holes as they were up and down and left and right and it was difficult to find the green.

Awesome course, tough playing it after all the rain we been having but still had fun

This is my husband's yearly golf event for MDA through the union at his office. It is a great time had by all. The staff is amazing; Ashley is the contact person she is right on the ball making sure everything & everyone is where they need to be, the young ladies in the club house in the morning make sure everyone has a bite before heading out with juice, coffee & a few bloody Mary's make an appearance too, then there is Frank, he makes sure everything is spot on once everyone returns for meals & drinks. Frank always makes sure I'm all set as I usually hold the fort while everyone is golfing and this year I had the pleasure of meeting Denis for the first time as he is usually only there week days, what a wonderful gentleman he is. It's such a great pleasure being here each year.

Christopher Hayes

Good course. No course management, not a single ranger on the player course. Quit after 12 holes (4.5 hours in). Packing too many people in just for money.

Liana Layug

Today, we hosted a tournament which benefited veterans at this venue, and the two years that we have been doing it, I have just been amazed at the level of service that Lyman Orchards provides. I have personally witnessed how they treat our team like we are their good friends and have benefited from this treatment as well. As we came unprepared to set up our missing in action and prisoner of war table, Mia was very instrumental, timely, and innovative in the way that she solved our problem and helped us put this together at the last minute. Chad was instrumental in helping us gather and purchase items for our raffle, even if it meant going completely out of the way. He was extremely friendly, patient, and very professional throughout the self-inflicted lengthy process of selection. I think her name is Ashley, but she was extremely attentive to our needs in hanging up a sign that was a pain to hang up and was making sure that we were all set throughout the entire event. Another female, I think her name was Dawn, was super nice to our event coordinator, making sure that he ate among the busyness of the festivities. The bartender was also phenomenal in the way that she poured my drink. I definitely felt like the drink lived up to how much it cost, which doesn't happen often in Connecticut. Basically, the entire team is as fantastic as the landscape and the course itself. I'm not a golfer, but I highly recommend this venue just based on the service, alone.

William Daniel

Greens are different and thick, you'll need a shotgun to shoot the ball across the green

Great Golf Course

Plenty of golf. Some really nice fall views on the Players course, as well of an added benefit of wrapping around some apple trees. Yum. Food was pretty good as well.

Course was nice, which is why you play, ultimately. But man, they pack you in on weekends so you have to wait every shot. At slower times its likely great, but not worth the premium price when other courses give you the same, for $10-20 less.

Paul Garcia

Nice track

Raymond Albanese

Great courses always in good condition

Been playing this course (Player course) since it's inception over 25 years ago. It has absolutely bottomed out. Knee deep rough, cart paths caving in, rocks everywhere, eroding sand traps, you name it . Still charging top dollar. If I could give zero stars I would. Discussed this early last year with management. It has deteriorated since. Will not be back anytime soon. These 4 and 5 star reviews are disingenuous. Go see for yourself

Ken Hehir

Played the Jones course over 4th of July weekend. Being a holiday, I expected some slow play, but this round was far worse. There was an incredibly slow foursome two groups ahead of us with absolutely no concept of proper pace. (all four golfers congregating at each players shot, etc.) There were no rangers to be found. 18 holes started 20 minutes late, and took just under 6 hours. As for the course conditions, they keep the fairways, rough, and greens in great shape. One minor quibble is that they replaced the normal color-coded flags with American flags for the holiday. I don't have a problem with that, except that I wish they provided a pin placement sheet or something. My biggest issue was with the bunkers. They were not really sand traps as much as hard-pan dirt with a thin layer of sand on top. It was so bad that on the back nine, I pulled the ball out of the traps, for fear of breaking a club. For an otherwise very well-maintained course, this was very disappointing. All in all, this is a very nice public course. I will definitely return as long as they fix the bunkers, just not on a holiday weekend.

A little expensive

Adam Ferrari

This was the first golf course I ever learned how to play on. Really scenic at high points too. Very well maintained and plays pretty open.

Rich Osborne

You can’t see anything on this course. The design is awful. We can’t see anyone or where they are at so you’re basically hitting blind. It’s a joke. Save your money. There’s no way to tell if someone is on the fairway unless you drive all the way up look and drive all they way back.

One of the premier golfing venues in CT. They also allow you to eat a delicious apple from one of the many trees that are around the courses.

Really fun courses. Can be very tricky.

Best pie in the land I love the blueberry pie warm it up for 30 seconds and top it with vanilla ice cream omg.

from the golf course to picking fruit to the corn maze. It's all good. I love lymans. Apples, apple pie, apple cider. sooo much good food. local... Support Local!!!

Matt Haynes

Jones course is the better of the two. Player course is quirky. The problem is the management is constantly holding outings and you can never get on the Jones course. I play during the week and the over play forces you to play on the weekends or the the Player course. I refuse to do both. There are other courses around that don't have an outing ever day.

Rowno McField

Challenging course with multiple par 5's. Greens maintained well with open fairways.

Allan Burt

Great golf....great staff. Very good conditions.

Brian Warren

I golf here every week... say no more!

Steve Scott

Very nice well maintained course!

Mike Hastings

Bunch of snobbishly aloof; haughty, wannabe high-class, exclusive a-holes. Don't bother - there are so many other great courses around

James Chrismond

Great shape for winter Golf

Brian Flynn

Great courses except they have the worst sand traps in the state.

Forest Rogue

The course is well maintained and the greens appear to be evenly cut but you will notice that they never roll true. I took a close look at the grass on the greens today and saw that there are different types of grass. There are areas that have grass blades densely packed and areas that have loosely spaced blades. This causes mini undulations on the green that are camouflaged by the even looking cut. You will notice that the golf balls never roll true on these greens. I ran my hand across the green and could feel the different heights of the grass. If the grass on the greens were cut shorter/tighter then they would roll better where the different grass densities would not affect the golf ball as much. I hope the superintendent reads this post. Thanks

Dave Bodner

Staff is great, staff in grill room is great, Pete runs the golf leagues better than anyone else possibly can. The course is the problem. They aerate half dollar size holes a few times a year, and don't fill them in. Sandtraps are rock traps, the rough eats balls that you'll never find. It has the potential to be a great course if they put any of the ridiculous rates they charge back into the course.

Sam Chaney

Overall Lyman Orchards is one of the best values for golf in Connecticut. There are 36 holes of championship golf on the Jones and Player courses, each with their own set of nuances. The Player course is all about club selection. If you are too short, you are in a ravine. If you are too long, you are in a ravine or water. The easiest looking holes turn out to be scorecard nightmares if you don't select the right club, or if you hit it fat or thin. The Jones course is more subtle. It looks easier than Player in many ways, but it is amazing how Robert Trent Jones places sand traps and trees right where your drive wants to go. Or how he places water into play on the side that the wind is blowing towards. Overshoot a green by a couple of yards and your ball can careen down a steep hill into overgrown vegetation of various sorts. Speaking of greens, the Jones course will challenge you with pin placements that almost guarantee a wide variety of undulations between your ball and the cup. Oh, I almost forgot the Apple Nine. There is a complete practice facility with a driving range with both grass and matts. There is a large putting practice area, and a chipping and pitching practice area along with a completely separate putting green. The Apple Nine itself is a nice executive course that will help you to dial in your approach shots, where you can play a quick nine for lunch in an hour or less. Add to this the Lyman Orchards themselves, along with the pick your own fruit, the corn maze, and the Apple Barrel farm market and deli, and Lyman Orchards stacks up to be a treasure in the state of Connecticut!

Kevin Skillings

Played the Player Course. As usual in good shape.

Tim Cheng

Solid course, pretty lay back low stress holes. Everything is well kept and clean. Beautiful scenery. Can't comment on the prices.

Chet Knell Jr.

Lyman Orchards has two great courses to play, and has a top notch staff to take care of you. Today they did a great job helping us (Nucor CT) with our fund raising tournament! Thanks Lyman Orchards!

Jarrad Valdez

I've only had the pleasure of playing nine holes. The only reason I'm giving it a four is that I've been on better golf courses at better prices

Richard

Too many blind shots.

Peter Shiue

Beautiful course, well maintained.

Chris Kelly

People complain, but I like the course. It is getting a bit ragged.

George Rasmussen

I enjoyed myself

Middlefield has four golf courses: The Jones, The Player and Apple 9 and Indian Springs (last two are 9 holes). We play them often, because everyone has different set of challenges and different type of "atmosphere" (especially small ones). I am very pleased with such a selection and quality of ground keeping provided on all courses. The Lyman Enterprise celebrates 275 year of existence this year. Their courses are well prepared for that. We appreciate The Apple 9 course, because it is great for a little everyday afternoon golfing. We see a lot of families and couples paying there. The driving range there is very popular even among players who later go on and play The Jones or The Player courses. It is amazing how ground crew keeps this course in excellent shape considering amount of players go through it every day. Overall all courses are worthy recommendations, especially in the fall, when one can enjoy the views and picking occasional apple from the Orchards located in the middle of the Player course.

Bob Tosetti Jr

Bob Khoury

Decent layout and has great potential. Pin placements were laughable, as if the greens superintendent had a fight with the missus the night before. I would not return.

Marcus Vitone

The placement of the pins, and the slowness of the greens made for an unpleasant golf experience. Fairways and rough also needed attention as well (way too long). Overall the course was in pretty marginal condition for a weekend. Staff and facilities were good, people were friendly and courteous but they need to get those lawnmowers working, and hire someone who knows about proper pin placement...

Andy Levitan

Great course and good food too..

I've played both Jones and Player, liked them both and I pick up an apple pie at the store while I'm there. Book on golfnow and save yourself a few bucks.

Fresh picked apples. Amazing country bakery, apple pies. Corn maze was challenging

Better apples than golf, short 9 hole courses that need improvement

J wethersfield

Been here many times and this was the worst trip I've had. Greens were slow. People in front of us were slow and when we said something to the ranger it was ignored. They must have been friends or members. The worst of it was I had brought 2 clients from out of state and promised them a great time. They were sorely dissapointed. Hopefully this doesn't happen too often. Have had much better experience in previous visits.

Jake McPadden

Beautiful views, challenging courses

PJ Bourdon

Friendly, helpful staff. Nice carts. Beautifully groomed course.

Gary Morris

Played The Gary Player course in a tournament today. Had a great time, course was a good challenge, the food was fantastic, and the staff was the best. They really know how to take care of you. Oh, can't forget the high top Apple pie we each left with. Ashley and her staff really helped make this tournament great. Kudos to your staff. Four stars.

M. Flowers

The corn maze was alot of fun!

Timothy LaDucer

Lyman's really has a gem of a club with 3 beautiful courses and a well equipped driving range and club house. The Jones course is well maintained and casual playing course with great views. The player course is also well kept but much more challenging with tighter fairways and smaller greens. Lyman's also has a smaller par 3 course which i have not played yet. Lyman's really has a gem right in the middle of CT with a course for every player type and skill level.

Sushil Pramanick

Patrick Reilly

Not the best in the state but it's been in good shape for the last month! Player course is way better than the Jones.

Jim Nugent

Played the Jones course. Fantastic layout, course is in pristine shape, will play it any time I'm in the area

Michael Gauld

Very hilly course with some great views. Players Course is in great shape.

M Giardina

Played the Jones course yesterday. Unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed with the conditions. First off, the rough was unmowed. Playing us open conditions in May is not fun. Second, the sand traps were filled with rocks and are basically dirt. I have a couple nice dings on my brand new vokey wedges thanks to that. Most also have only one rake. Third, the greens were recently aerated, bumpy and slow. Almost no chance to make a 4 foot putt. And lastly, they had the nerve to charge 62 bucks for WALKING 18. Seriously, they should be ashamed of themselves for charging that price when their course is in such awful shape. Staff was friendly but that was about the only positive. Hope they can get their act together and clean this place up.

Two amazing golf courses. They're almost always in impeccable condition. Good practice facilities, good restaurant. The staff is friendly. I go here about a dozen times a season. Both courses offer unique challenges, and very nice views. If I lived closer I'd have a membership!
