Played there on Saturday September 14, 2019. Sad to see such a nice course in absolutely terrible shape. Most of the greens were very poor and the fairways had a lot of bare spots. I couldn’t believe the amount of divots on the tee box’s seems like none of the players fix their divots. I really hope they start spending some money on the course to get it back to the way it was a few years ago. It is one of the nicest courses in CT sad to see it go downhill.

Greens are in the roughest shape I've ever seen fairways have some rough spots The layout of the course is beautiful the facilities are beautiful ball you'll have more fun

The Safari Club of Golf had its inaugural adventure to Fox Hopyard on September 4. With well over one-hundred of our members in attendance we can all rate the experience right up there with the best! Unfortunately, the greens had recently been punched, but management made us aware of that fact going into the event. But we had that one date available and decided to proceed anyway. Maybe one of the best decisions we made in a long time. Heck, anyone with even a modicum of golf sense realizes punching greens is one of those necessary evils that all courses face this time of year. However, just the layout and facilities themselves leave one in awe of this place. Panoramic views abound all while playing 18 spectacular holes of golf that consist of many traditional New England style holes, coupled with some European links style holes to boot. You kind of get a two-fer when playing this spectacular golf course. Many of our members already expressed their desire in having Fox Hopyard included on our regular Safari Club Adventures for next season. That kind of sums things up pretty well.

Lots of menu choices. Love the country fried chicken and whipped potatoes. Ale battered fish is terrific! The view from the back patio of the golf course can't be beat! The wait staff is friendly and accommodating.

My sister and her fiance got engaged in the fall of 2017. They are two of the most selfless, hard-working, yet low-key individuals who wanted a familiar environment to celebrate their wedding day. I will save all of the gruesome details between what happened from the moment they were misled into thinking their event date was held - to where we are now - which is, as a family, furious, disgusted, and honestly questioning the moral compass of Fox Hopyard's questionable (at her very best, might I add) leader, Kristi. Kristi could have won an Oscar for her performance in destroying my sister & her fiance's plans for their wedding. Not only did Kristi never follow up to confirm their date, she lied throughout the entire pre-contract process only to strip them of their venue, through an email, because she had another couple who was willing to pay more money for the same date. This is when I stepped in. As a working professional with not only a background at one of the most prestigious golf clubs in Connecticut, but also in Event Management, Hospitality, Food and Beverage, and the Club Industry, I knew that if I could simply have a conversation with Kristi, I could make things right for my sister. I explained my work history and background to her, so she knew I was not an upset sister, but an actually colleague that was trying to work with her. I felt more than a little confident that I could help clear up the miscommunications and make things right; I refused to believe that my sister was losing her date for the reasons outlined above. After about 45 attempts to connect with Kristi over a 24 hour period, I finally reached her - only to be greeted with the same condescension that my sister had warned me of. The conversation with nothing short of painful, but by the end of the call, I had Kristi's word that if this other "couple" had not put a deposit down for the date by THAT night at 11:59pm, they would lose the date and I could call first thing on Saturday morning when Kristi arrived to put down the deposit and again, make things right. When I called Kristi (again, multiple times) on Saturday morning, I was greeted with yet another of her bold-faced lies. Though the other couple had not paid a deposit at that time, which she assured me was the only obstacle between our family and the date in question, they were "interested in moving forward with the contracting process". This is about the time I gave Kristi a lesson on business ethics. AS A KICKER, In the time I spoke to Kristi on the Friday (our first conversation) to the last time I checked my emails on Friday night, this "Director of Operations/general Manager/Event Planner", aka Kristi, decided she wanted to see if what I had told her about myself was true, so she visited my page on LinkedIn. Instead of working hard to undo a terrible mistake on her part, she spent her afternoon perusing MY SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT to see if I was lying, just like she had been doing to my family and me throughout this unbelievable runaround. Nice to know where this woman was prioritizing her time while someone's most IMPORTANT DAY OF THEIR LIFE was very quickly unraveling. She truly did not care about our family and our relationship with Fox Hopyard. All she saw were dollar signs. Moral of the story: If you want to deal with an unprofessional, morally corrupt, dollar hungry and uneducated "Jack of All Trades" - I say this as Kristi's title(s) are not only plentiful, but truly overstatements - then please, I encourage you to try to book, and then lose your wedding date at Fox Hopyard. If you like being spoken down to, misled, and have weeks of time go by without any communication from your Event planner, Kristi is your girl! She seriously did not even have an email address for my sister until the week this whole scenario came to a screeching hault - and it was from MY sister emailing HER. To summarize: beautiful facility; amazing line-level staff; consistent food and beverage offerings; deplorable management.

Fox Hopyard golf course, 4-1/2 stars, is home to a championship golf course that ranks with some of the best in Connecticut. This tree-lined and open parkland layout provides a wonderful test for your all-round game, with many attractive, skilfully crafted and challenging holes to enjoy. A must play if you are in the area.

Tho not a golfer, I find the prime rib dinner here the best in the region. The views from the beautiful clubhouse are worth coming alone. A well designed property. I'm told by friends the course is very good.

Played here for the first time last week with the Safari Club. Great layout! Challenging, but fair. Course conditions were very good. Although the greens were recently aerated, which is to be expected at this time of year, they putted true. Staff was very helpful. All in all, a very enjoyable day!

Course is in fine shape. The restaurant is another matter. The service was very good, but the kitchen needs to pay attention to details. My friend and I both received food that was not as described on menu also slow. They corrected the problem but it took an hour for 2 lunch items. Food was not up to the quality you would expect from such an upscale establishment. Play the course not the food.

Rob Schneider

I've never have a bad meal here in the 20+ times I've eaten here, and was location for family event. Super professional staff, impeccably clean over the entire property, awesome food selection, and the course is always in amazing shape.

Great layout, practice facilities, clubhouse, and 19th hole. I really like courses that require you to use all the clubs in your bag... This is one of those!

Course is too hard and too expensive

Suzanne Langlais

Course deserves a one star review, but it IS a pretty course so I’ll bump it up to two. The fairways are filled with divots, and the greens are TERRIBLE! Surprisingly so! Filled with ball marks, many not repaired. Lots of burnt out blackened edges. Crispy in spots! Literally crunchy underfoot. Not a single maintenance worker to be seen anywhere. Fairways have a lot of weeds. Seriously, this course has declined rapidly in the past couple of years. Their FB page offered a special, but the link didn’t work. I booked the reservation anyway, but included a note explaining about the link and asking them to apply it. They did not. Round was NOT worth $99 each. Not by a long shot.

Pamela Munro

Course is in a nice location, clearly they put money into the clubhouse, etc but my group was really disappointed with the conditions of the greens, fairways, bunkers and tee boxes. At $130 (sometimes $99 on Golfnow) a round this place should be plush like Lake of Isles. Most of the fairways had a lot of bare / dead spots and severe browning. The greens were beat up pretty bad and the tee boxes had crab grass and need some serious attention. Also the bunkers were crap and filled with stones and not enough sand which will mess up your club faces. The staff was nice. The golf surfboard things were fun. I'd think twice about spending this much and not getting the quality of conditions in return.

We ate at the restaurant at the Golf Club which was very quaint. There was seating outside that overlooked the greens. Our bartender was excellent while we waited for our table. Food was delicious.

I can't speak to the quality of the golf course because I'm not a player but I did want to mention the beauty of the location and give kudos to the restaurant "On The Rocks" which is located in the clubhouse. While you pick something off of their reasonably priced menu or have a beer at the beautiful big bar you can take in the terrific views of the surrounding golf course. Stone patios are accessible from the restaurant area with comfortable seating where you can watch the golfers "surfing" on their scooter like golf carts....interesting concept. The out of the way location of the course seems to keep the place from getting crowded and we have never had trouble finding a table. The menu is filled with the usual pub fare and groups should be able to find something that appeals to most everyone. This is a great destination for lunch and offers something a little bit different.

One of my favorite gold courses in ct, only reason I'm not giving 5 is because the haven't offered me a free membership . Lmao

Timothy LaDucer

By far one of my favorite courses ever played. I just wish i could afford to play here more often. The layout is perfect and the course itself is absolutely top notch!

Ryan D

Golfed here for first time this year supposedly number 1 ranked in ct...nice golf course...challenging and fast but my biggest problem was the tee boxes being so poorly maintained. They lacked grass and were covered w weeds...that was the biggest deterrent.

Gene Horne

This is great to play the course was in great shape people are very friendly... the restaurant was over the top.. try the pigs feet off the chart

Great golf course and food!

The course is in really poor shape. Grass not growing on the range. Fairways are burnt out (#1, #10 especially). Number 3 fairway is a disaster with tire-rut marks 150 yards in. Greens were fast but concrete, hard to hold even for a scratch golfer. The new pro is cocky/arrogant, not a people person at all. The halfway house at the turn (which is within the proshop) was 7 golfers deep with no one attending for at least 5 minutes. Clubhouse staff/food was good post-round, beverage cart was always present on the course (good). Not sure what the other reviewers are seeing lately but apparently a state amateur is being held at the course. The superintendent better get out the white paint for that event for GUR.

mark hagenbach

Superb rolling layout weaving through woods and wetlands. Fourth hole teebox provides an incredible view of the countryside. Golf shop is first class with an accommodating & friendly professional staff. Lots of programs for kids, always seems to be something happening at the range during the summer months. Reward yourself with a cold beverage after your round on the patio overlooking the last two holes. Great place to spend a day.

Felicia Moncada

We had a family party here for my cousin's 40th. Beautiful area! Our party was outdoors on the terrace, and they lit fire pits for us so the ambiance was very nice! The food was delicious and the waitstaff very accommodating and friendly. The views we're incredible. We would definitely gather here again!

Adam Werner

On the rocks, great food quiet atmosphere

Matt Justaddwata

Beautiful club and great facilities. The restaurant is a favourite of ours and offers great food and service in a relaxing atmosphere.

This is a year-round favorite. We enjoyed the specials last night. My dad barely made a dent in his BIG grilled rib eye and he actually liked his asparagus. The porch offers a lovely summer setting overlooking the links but we stayed indoors with the same exquisite view.

It's a great layout but the conditions are questionable. Bad weather year for golf courses but big rocks in the bunkers chewed up tees and bare fairways are an issue. Bring your "A" putting game!
