Don’t buy ‘topsoil’ here. Their topsoil is clay mixed with sand and mulch and exorbitantly overpriced at that. Could not be more disappointed after getting 4 cubic yards delivered.

They have an amazing variety of plants. All of the plants are well cared for. In fact while I was shopping, two people were walking around the perennials dead heading, while helping customers. Extremely knowledgeable staff. They are a bit more expensive than a chain home improvement store, but the variety, quality, and helpful people are with that extra money. I found superb perennials for my pollinator garden. I was looking for smaller varieties, and they had the ones that would work for me.

I purchased over 4000 dollars worth of products/services this time last year and the first problem that I experienced was different dialots of sod ... some of the sod was old a dying. I called and they had to pull it up/replace it. In addition, they charged me for soil that was supposed to go under the sod. I pulled up the corners of the sod only to find that they never put the top soil down and I believe it was approximately 600 dollars. They had to issue a refund but if I had not caught this, I would have been charged for something I did not get. The manager was rude and was treating me as if I made it up until I emailed the pictures over. I called today for Black bulk mulch and they said that they would not be able to come out if it was under 375 dollars. I need 152 square feet... Keep in mind that I’m a returning customer who spent a decent amount of money only to get poor service and dying sod from different diolots... I have all pictures on file and video surveillance signs in addition to video footage of the install. Good luck to all if you go with them!!!

I had a great experience with these guys today! I went in looking for succulents and cacti for a naturalistic desert terrarium, with some plants and requirements in mind, and they were able to recommend plants that can live well together that met my needs. They also had great advice on an organic soil mixed for cacti and how to plant and care for the ones I chose. Very helpful staff and a lovely setup, with a huge variety of plants to choose from.

Great experience at Merrifield Garden Center. Tony Medina was very helpful. He took his time and give me detailed information about specific boxwood Green Beauty. He explained they come in different sizes and heights. I requested minimum 24" height and he told me right away I need to get 24"-30" because they need to be trimmed to get round shape and I get 24" minimum I request. We have made some great investments with other gardening businesses but what sets Merrifield Garden Center apart is their concrete knowledge on all of their inventory. We had a vision of the tree we wanted and they helped us with all the options and NAILED IT. We purchased a beautiful “Ruby Falls” yesterday and this morning she was delivered. This place sells a wide variety of plants, pretty much anything you want. Staff are friendly and helpful. There is an onsite advisor who is very knowledgeable and provided us with useful information. Price seems reasonable. They also provide plastic covers for your car to keep the dirt from spreading. Plenty of parking but can be busy and packed on weekends.

We love Merrifield. My wife "drags" me there where she gets fresh flowers for her container garden, mulch and potting soil for her herb garden and a seemingly endless supply of brightly glazed pots to put it all in. I enjoy wandering around the rows of flowers, vegetables, and herbs and just soaking in the sight of all those plants I don't have to water. The staff is always ready to help and it's never hard to find someone when you want them. OK, maybe she doesn't have to drag me.

Such a gorgeous nursery! I recently got into gardening a year ago and I love to go to nurseries and garden centers on dates (whether alone or with my boyfriend) and this, by far, takes the cake! My boyfriend got me a croton (amongst other things) for our anniversary so I had to stop by this place. There is a great selection for indoor and outdoor plants and flowers, I was amazed. I don't live near here but anytime I visit Vienna, I am sure to stop by.

Had them install a replacement tree last year. This year we had a few lower branches that did not bloom. Once i got a hold of the right person, Merrifield sent out someone to look at the tree. They pruned and re-shaped the tree within days. It looks great. They even extended the warranty another year before i could ask. I love that they stand behind their work and will work to make the customer happy. Very happy with their support. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful.

This is the original Merrifield Garden Center. The plants are beautiful and the staff is super helpful. This garden center is the smallest of the three; but, they are packed full of flowers. Parking can be a little tricky as this garden center is extremely busy. This is a great garden center with everything you nerd for your gardening needs.

Very helpful staff. They have a full-time plant / lawn specialist that helps identify and treat certain plants. Prices are slightly higher than a big-box location, but well worth it to support the location. The plants seem to be in much better shape than big-box locations. We've purchased a few trees and had them installed and they are all beautiful. Highly recommend.

We just had some sod installed at our house and they appear to have done a superb job. They came and cut out the old sod, prepped the ground, and laid the new sod expertly. The lawn edges were cut so precisely, no edges or corners missed, and the quality of the sod looks great. There was a drain pipe running under the sod too, so while I have no way of knowing if that was left in working condition, I assume by the great care and attention to detail they showed on the sod, that it is likely in great shape too. I would highly recommend Merrifield's Landscaping Services. While they tend to be more expensive than other companies, their quality is better as well. I do recommend that if you have them come out to give you a quote that you make sure they take accurate measurements for the quote so nothing changes between the first visit and final cost. The area being re-sodded for us ended up being larger than what the original estimator thought, thus a higher price, but Merrifield honored the first quote. It took a couple calls to make this happen, so accurate measurements can help avoid any mis-understandings.

I requested a landscaping consultation to come to my house to address a very neglected yard. The guy who came seemed aloof. He didn't take any notes or pictures which seemed odd but I though maybe he had a good memory. Although he suggested not to put a lot of money into a rental I wanted the yard to look nice for the money I'm about to spend. In the end, his proposal was like the notes he didn't take. It was lacking many key areas in the front that we talked about and was very basic. The consultation was a waste of time and money and felt that I should have just gone to the center and spoke to the people in the garden center for free who had much more interest, enthusiasm and knowledge.

If you're looking to spruce up your garden in the spring, definitely come here to check it out rather than going to Lowes or Home Depot. Staff are super friendly and knowledgeable too! Great selection, healthy plants, terrific staff, lots of no-extra-charge information, handouts, etc. Price for home delivery is $85 -- steep for a few plants but reasonable if you are buying a whole lot, so plan accordingly. Also has a big department of tools, pots, mulch, rocks. All this goodness does not come cheap -- this is not the lowest cost provider. I think that's entirely fair. I use several nurseries, and some (actually, most) are cheaper, but Merrifield is generally the best. Also, someone below complains about being checked when they walk out with plants. To that I say, get over yourself. Yes, they WILL do that -- they've done it to me -- because they suffer quite a bit of shoplifting. Can you blame them? I don't. Show your receipts and be courteous if you are going to take plants directly from the plant racks to the car -- that's all there is to it.

Merrifields in Fair Oaks has changed their outdoor arrangement of plants so that it's now easier to find what you're looking for and frankly it's spectacular visually! I shop all of the garden centers looking for best value for the price. But when it comes to trees, shrubs and perennials - I spend the extra bucks because the quality of the plants at Merrifields is unparrielled. P.S. I still miss Bob.

This place is so beautiful, it’s basically a botanical gardens where you can take the plants home if you wish! Unparalleled selection of flowers, ground cover, herbs, bushes, trees and everything in between. There’s a huge outdoor section as well as a hot house (tropical plants, dessert plants...) and a wide selection of seeds and gardening tools inside. The staff is always friendly and helpful. We’ve gone multiple times to their “plant doctor” to diagnose plants we have that are not doing so well, and they always have practical tips for taking care of them. Only knocked a star off because this is not necessarily the cheapest place to get plants or plant supplies. They have high quality stuff, so if you can’t find it anywhere else, it’s worth the money. I wouldn’t recommend getting something you could purchase at a hardware store here (mulch, gardening tools, common herbs or flowers) as you will often pay twice as much for them.

This is my happy place. It's such a beautiful place to walk around and explore, during all four seasons. The staff is helpful and kind. When my son was little, we used to come here and look at the koi fish, fountains and statues. Now, whenever I have a bad day, I find myself here... looking at the orchids, ribbons, and outdoor displays. The resplendent, decorated trees in December are a big part of my Christmas. I have also actually bought plants and decorations but I really browse more as I live in an apartment.

Well, truthfully you may be able to get better prices at smaller gardening retail stores or perhaps Home Depot or Lowes on select plants or flowers. But here's where Merrifield Garden Center distinguishes itself: Service. Their people are experts and are able to communicate their vast knowledge in a clear manner for the customer. And then there is the Gardening Genius Bar - that's what I call it. On this Sat. it had the famous Dr. John there. For example, we brought clipping from a boxwood that was having problems. Dr. John looked at the clippings quickly grabbed two old books that were annotated extensively and immediately diagnosed the issue and offered a solution. This entire establishment is a masters level education on great customer service. You should stop by.

*Update: Email sent 9 days ago, No response...what's the point? 2 stars because the delivery driver gave my SO the receipt for my Valentines day flowers, a bit tacky in my opinion. Made our dinner date later that night a bit uncomfortable since she felt like her gift to me wasnt as good since she saw what I spent on the flowers alone. Also, the delivery man made her feel a bit uncomfortable waiting around for a tip. She didn't give him one because the receipt he gave her was a $30 delivery fee to go 2 minutes down the road. The online service, customer support via the phone was great.

I have had the pleasure of shopping at this store in their Gallows Rd location in the Falls Church area. Their staff went over the top to help me with my friend who is in a wheelchair. We spent over 2 hours browsing and buying to help us celebrate the Christmas season. From plants to ribbons, Complimentary popcorn, and hot coffee; we were surrounded by positive, helpful, friendly staff ! A shout out to their cashiers who held onto a large bag of products at their register after I had to leave suddenly because I had to get my friend home and had to leave quickly because of her illness. These young ladies held onto my purchase, tagged it describing my sudden departure and as a result a call the following day was met with, " Oh Yes ! We have your package ! Come in anytime today and we will have it for you at the front register!!" What a relief - over $150 carefully selected gifts and decorations were still mine ! Great Job Merrifield Gardens !!!

Christmas tree centers are a dime a dozen around the Northern Virginia area during the holidays. Just about every shopping center has a stand set up and a meager selection of trees for those of us too lazy to drive more than 5 minutes away from our homes to find something of a little more stock. Well, my friends, if you're not one of those people, I definitely recommend going to Merrifield Garden Center. Our family has gone for the past couple of years during the Christmas season and we have never been disappointed. They have a WIDE selection of Christmas trees in all shapes, sizes and types. You're almost guaranteed to find something that will fit into your home. What's also great is that they're constantly putting out new trees as others are getting sold, meaning that you're not likely going to get scraps if you end up buying your tree a little late in the season. Couple of things to note: 1) Parking is a pain. The parking lot is gravel and relatively small which means that, during the holiday rush, it's kind of a mess. I recommend going in the morning to pick up a tree because the rush typically occurs in mid-afternoon/evening. Along the same lines.....THE LINES are rough. The lot is pretty spacious so you and your family can walk around and pick out a tree without too much commotion, but when you go inside to pay, it's a different story. The building is kind of cramped as it is, add 200 holiday shoppers onto that and you've got yourself nothing short of a riot. If you can, I recommend sending one person inside to stand in line and pay while the rest of the family waits outside or in the car. It's just a little more manageable. However, MGC does provide free popcorn to people who go inside. So that's a win and, honestly, probably half the reason this place is getting 5-stars. 2) The service is great. Attendants are walking around constantly and will help you find the exact tree you're looking for. Also, once you pick your tree out, they'll take it down for you and wrap it up so you can put it on your car. They'll even strap it to your roof. I typically give them a tip, but it's certainly not required. 3) Prices....oh the prices. Honestly, I wish we had gone to one of the shopping center Christmas tree lots when I find myself at the checkout counter paying $100-200 for a Christmas tree. That stings a little bit. BUT, I've never regretted buying a tree from them. They typically last the entire holiday season and are very fresh. Overall, if you want to do a little more for your Christmas tree than just stop by the stand outside your local CVS, but don't feel like driving out to West Virginia to visit a farm, Merrifield Garden Center is a pretty solid bet.

Finally got to visit and close out my hat trick of Merrifields! Not a bad selection of houseplants/tropical plants in the greenhouse given the space they are working with. I think I need to come back and visit when it's warm out so I can get the full experience. Prices are definitely on the higher end of things, even if you compare them to their own Fairfax and Gainesville locations, which was disappointing for me. I ended up leaving and going to my local location to pick up more single stalk lucky bamboo which is why this isn't a 5-star review.

Excellent for all sorts of plants, shrubs, trees, garden decor. Very knowledgeable staff. There's a very helpful plant clinic where one can show them a photo of an ailing plant, or bring a leaf or twig, and they'll diagnose the problem and give solutions.

Very good selection of plants that will grow in the Washington DC area, and good advice from knowledgeable people. Just be sure to bring plenty of money! Also a great selection of indoor plants, tools, decorations, garden supplies, you name it. Expensive? You said it!!!

My sister and I went to Merrifield for the first time ever and loved it! We found exactly what we were looking for and we had AHMAZING help in doing so!! The gal who stuck with us the entire time was Missy and she never complained about our traipsing all over the entire grounds before we found exactly what we wanted!! I can’t thank her enough for her knowledge and patience and for so many of the employees who were sooo nice , friendly and knowledgeable! I also want to point out a young man , didn’t get his name, but he was our heman! He carried heavy pots outside to inside , to the car and would have kept going had we not found something! We will go back!! Thank you for a wonderful 1st time experience!
