Rural life museum takes you to a simpler time...it is beautiful back there!
Couldn't believe how beautiful it was!!
So peaceful, quiet and beautiful. Not to mention FREE! Took all 3 kids to the children garden to play on jungle gym and to taste different items out of the sample taste garden. Had a good time
Quality site
So realizing
Spring has sprung. Early visit to see the daffodils renews me!
Amazing collection of plantation artifacts, including buildings. Nice educational pieces explaining slave trade and life.
Really nice and relaxing, will be back for a hike
Very nice museum of farm life in the 19th century. Tucked away in the center of Baton Rouge LA. Unknown to many locals and most tourists.
Best Cornmaze EVER!!!!
Great for walking, has plenty of beautiful grounds, the rural life museum has quite a few good pieces inside and plenty of houses to walk through outside. You don't have to pay to use the trails, but you do pay for the rural life museum (10/adult). Great place to visit on the weekend.
This is one of the best outdoor/indoor museums in the country. It is a hidden gem. The property contains and Overseers home, slave cabins, an outdoor kitchen, sugar cane processing, black smith's shop, and much more. The indoor museum has artifacts from the early 18C to the Industrial Revolution. This is a must see visit. I love to go there and see the roses, and walk through the grounds behind the house. The museum is interesting and has different activities at different times of the year. Worth the trip to get outdoors and enjoy a peaceful walk and see the mature gardens that have been tended over the years.
This is a must all year around. Something beautiful and wonderful to see and do all year round.
First time but won't be the last!!!
Beautifully landscaped grounds.
Loved the history!!!
Great place for birthday parties. A friend had her little girl's pay at the Botanical gardens. The pavilion serves as a cozy backdrop. All the kids had tons of fun here. I suggest you drop by for a tour or to plan a party. I give it 4 stars becuase I have not been here before during daylight hours.
Love the improvements to the Children's Garden! My kids had a blast!
Lovely place for viewing nature in the heart of Baton Rouge with various specimen gardens, herb garden, children's garden, small playground with natural elements (across from children's garden), meeting rooms and spaces, hiking trails, rose garden, and more. A true treasure in the city.
Wonderful venue for meetings, celebrations. The grounds are beautiful and are constantly being improved. You would definitely enjoy it if you like places nestled in natural settings.
We did farm thing and the kids had fun
Beautiful gardens!
Beautiful hidden space in Baton Rouge.
Well worth the trip.
Spend a little time walking around and enjoying the beautiful gardens
If you are a bride, You need to make sure your caterer has 3-4 hours to prepare for your wedding if you are doing the kitchen rental. The kitchen is separate from the Orangerie.
Alway a refreshing walk thru these beautiful gardens. During the holidays they have beautiful attractions. The orchard society just put on a show that was outstanding. They were setting up for another event that was pretty big. If you enjoy roses their are so many rows of different varties. The old houses and museum are so interesting and a great place to bring the kids to run around.
Tons of trails and gorgeously maintained. They host tons of events here and they are always so beautifully done.
Beautiful grounds and lots of interesting things to see. Highly recommend you look up their site and find out what kind of fun they are hosting year round.
Wonderful gardens with a nice trail system as well. It's very relaxing and they hold nice events like the orchid show which had a wonderful array of flowers on display and for sale. I love visiting these gardens.
Great for families, fantastic for dates. Really cool place to explore
Beautiful. I've been here for field trips, company crawfish boils and Halloween.
Nice garden with lots of trees. Even in the middle of the day, it felt a little bit cooler because of the trees. We came for a birthday party at one of the pavilion so we didn't check the other parts such as the museum. But we saw a very cute playground near the pavilion. Will go again next time just to explore more of the garden!
Beatifulllllllllll!
It consists of Rural Life Museum, a small garden, LSU botanical garden and Burden garden itself. Rural Life Museum is the best of all. Walking trails are ok. Best for Saturday morning walk.
Flowers!!
An interesting look into Louisiana life in the late 19th & early 20th centuries. Located in the heart of Baton Rouge, the Rural Life Museum is an oasis of peace in the middle of the city. It's a short drive that transports you back in time to a simpler, though more brutal time. It's both educational and entertaining. We spent over 3 hours and could've stayed longer if we didn't have other obligations. Highly recommended.
Beautiful & serene.
Garden fest 2019 was a great family event.
Went to the summer garden fest, & had a great time! Everything was well organized & they even had stuff for the kids to do. Parking was easy, bathrooms were clean & air-conditioned.
Multiple arbor and plant based events occur here every year. Very family friendly. The rural life museum is second to none.
Absolutely beautiful. A great outing for young kids or anyone interested in local or exotic plants. There are also maintained trails anime and occasional plant sales.
It offers so many things to see and learn in one place. The set-up of genuine Acadian-styled buildings is hard to find anywhere else and complements the setting. There is a museum, slave quarters, a large kitchen garden, cajun-styled, period gardens designed by Steele Burden and sculpture, some quite unusual like the dueling stags mounted on an outside chimney. There are paths to wander through and places to picnic with just a $3 cover charge. The location is very accessible, just off I-10 in Baton Rouge.
Nice place to walk around
My friend had her wedding here. It was a nice venue, quiet and accommodating. She had a DJ set up under the pavilion, the ceremony in the garden, and a cocktail area in between. The food was served in the Orangerie. She rented lights and high top tables for the pavilion, but the venue provided chairs and round tables for the food service and the ceremony. The caterers provided linens. Be careful when you schedule because the Orangerie does not have air conditioning.
Love it
One of my favorite places to go when I have a chance to get to Baton Rouge. Even if you don't get to actually go to the museum, just driving through the gardens is like stepping back in time. Peacefully quiet, one can choose to walk through the trails, wander through the gardens, or simply sit on a bench and enjoy nature
Lots of history, trails and nature. Nice gardens. Centrally located. New playground. Museum is very large with many displays. Historic outbuildings in abundance. Reasonable price.
I love love love Burden Museum & Gardens!
Loved visiting this place. Would go here again and again. The Rural Life Museum was so interesting. They have so many items, I know I didn't see everything. Hope I can make it back here one day.
We went for the Camilla plant sale! Such a beautiful place to visit! A play ground for the children! And trails to walk! Loved it! Planning to go again.
Great Master Gardener's Plant Sale
Visited for the first time just loved it but didn’t get chance to visit the museum, hope I will visit that too soon
Beautiful place to visit...also a new playground/ garden for kids.
Great wedding venue. Very open and plenty of room for large crowds. Perfect layout for an outdoor wedding.
Lovely place
Beautiful!
Amazing as always. The docents were so knowledgeable and interesting.
Beautiful grounds. We went to a plant sale there and I bought some plants I've never heard of. Prices were around $6.00
No doubt a great learning experience for the kids. A little close to the highway, which is audible in winter.
The new children's playground needs shade.
Road is not that good.
The Rural Life Museum was very enjoyable. They could use some better directional signage but I enjoyed it very much. The gardens were just okay. I guess I expected more.
Just watched the documentary on LPB
Beautiful place
I brought my grandsons here for Arbour Day. We planted trees, had snacks and participated in many fun activities. The event was well organized and the park is great to let the kids run around.
Beautiful grounds and open swathes of land. I am slightly biased because of the weather and also I was getting paid to be there but I'd say it's a great place to have a wedding and reception. The food was served in a small building next to the field where the ceremony occurred, and the band played under a large pavilion with tables places out in the open. As it got dark, the lights from the band shown across the property and you could see the party from a distance. There also was more to the property I didnt see. Also i noted that they charge photographers to take photos there.
I went to the herb fest they had there. It was fantastic and they acomidated to the handicap people. Very nice place.
This place was amazing, even on a hot and humid Southern day! My favorite site between here and Natchez, MS so far on this trip. Be sure to eat at Crawford's II nearby. The food is delicious and plentiful (suggested by someone at Burden Museum, and it was great!). Thanks! Had a great visit.
The gardens and trails are amazing!
Really beautiful. Spent couple hours looking at grounds and walking trails.
Lovely gardens!
Lots of artifacts from the past. You can really get a sense of what it must have been like to live in the past. The museum is kinda small but crammed pack with interesting displays. The outside village is done very well. It's worth an hour or 2 of your time. We also a bride to be getting picts done,so if your a photographer...
Step back in time to when Louisiana was in its infancy. They have thousands of pieces, tons of old house drawn carriages, actual rural houses and more
Went for a wedding. It was very nice
Great place for a family outing.
The gardens are beautiful in the spring but if you want to see Camellia blossoms you need to go in January or February they host the Camellia Society Camellia show every February.
Beautiful grounds and I really enjoyed the museum. Allow a couple of hours to tour the whole museum.
I love walking the trails there.
Great
ZxB the
Wonderful location
Beautifully maintained! You would never guess this place is in the city because it gives you the sense of tranquility. It is quickly becoming one of my favorite gardens to visit!
It a lovely place lots of gardens and exotic flowering plants and other stuff like that, it's a real life museum, like a big house and slave quarters type of situation and they charge a fee to get in
Great place to visit and bring your kids. Lots of easy trails and even a kids community garden.
Great place for a nature walk without having to leave the city. Unfortunately you can hear the highway loud and clear.
(Translated by Google) Great for photos, family outing and is perfect for children's fun. (Original) Ótimo para fotos, passeio em família e é perfeito para diversão das crianças.
Enjoyed our visit. Although, some of the information seems slightly whitewashed. I found myself doing some fact checking.
Great place for a family walk!!
Love the history in this place. Love going there
I loved it
One of the best museums in the south
Beautiful place to spend your time with your family on Sunday afternoon
Fantastic children's garden, nature playground and hiking trails. Hidden gem of natural beauty in the middle of Baton Rouge.
Great place to see all types of beautiful plants! Free which is always great.
Only fair i am sorry to say...pretty run down outside
My wife and I enjoyed a delightful afternoon experiencing the lifestyle of the 19th Century: wheelchairs, steam engines, a hot water heater attached to a bath tub, coffins, and thousands of other items. If you ever wondered what happened to all the buggies and carriages after the widespread usage of automobiles, here they are!
Very relaxing place to bring the grandkids. We got to stroll and then they exhausted themselves on the playground.
An amazing museum
You definitely have to do this! Allow yourself at least 3hrs! Learned alot & saw alot!!!
Great place inside city limits to get away from the city. Peaceful and beautiful.
marvelous programs in a beautiful setting. great gardening tips and first Monday of each month a speaker on a very interesting subject....just love the gardens!
Visited the Herb society plant sale
Nice place
Only $3 per person makes such a great deal! The scenery is stunning and the employees are incredibly helpful/friendly.
Just a great place for many reasons.
Nice gardens and walking trails
Totally gorgeous gardens and museum in Baton Rouge. The garden entry fee is only $3. The museum and outdoor buildings are $10. Well worth the small fee to see such a beautiful and historic place. The indoor museum about plantations and rural life is eye opening. Some things in museum might disturb small children. You must be good with quite a bit of walking. There are nice trails, huge live oaks, beautiful azaleas and camelias. The musuem is like a fridge so dress warmly.
Peaceful place. Worth paying a visit
There are a lot of hostorical tools and some old houses. You also can see directly all stuff (not behind glass) and inside of those houses and other rooms. If you like photography, you can spend several hours there for taking photos. That was a great experience for me!
Interesting! Go early morning in Summer to beat heat, but about 30 minutes after opening, we went near when they opened and they were just starting to unlock exhibits. Did not spend much time inside as was turned off by film which had 99% white people in it and only 2 people of color - 1 slave and one student. Come on they can do better!
The gardens we're very pretty
Loved the children’s garden. And you can sign up for hands on activities. Also they had fresh tomatoes and honey for sale.
Beautiful! I love the atmosphere. Will definitely come back.
I enjoyed my experience
Fantastic place for nature lovers, families and history buffs!
Beautiful park. The flowers make me smile. The museum has long horn cows and lots of old farm equipment. It's very educational.
We enjoyed our 3.5 mile hike on the trails and a stroll through the botanical gardens.
Beautiful
Awesome place
Beautiful area flowers and old stuff great
Amazing, peaceful botanical gardens, well kept and each unique plant labeled for reference. It's a real testament to the passionate beauty of the "green thumbs" and various nature advocates in South Louisiana. If you're looking for a place right off the interstate to catch some fresh air and admire nature's bounty, you won't find a better choice
Wonderful place to enjoy!!
Great history
Always beautiful
Such a nice place to visit!!! A beautiful botanical oasis in the middle of an urban area, but you don't feel like you are in the middle of the city when walking on the grounds. It is so peaceful!
Brought the kids to the corn maze. They really had a good time there. There were many kid friendly activities. Great family fun.
Beautiful
Anyplace you can step into nature and learn a little something is great. Free is a bonus. This was our first visit, and we had no idea what to expect. We got confused right away finding the trails and walked a bit on the road for while. All good. We didn't even venture into the tended garden area, as we got distracted with a couple geocaches and didn't have a ton of time anyway. It was a very nice place to hang out during our unplanned day in Baton Rouge while our truck was bring repaired during our roadtrip.
Such a great place to see culture throughout history.
This place was fantastic. The trails are well maintained, there are many educational markers along the way as well. The flowers are so pretty. Such a good place to be peaceful and learn a bit about the nature in the area.
Beautiful and a great walk. Love the peacock
(Translated by Google) The garden is libdo. It has a field of sunflowers that provide beautiful photos. The museum is well deversified, focused on the lives of former immigrant residents who formed this country. It has authentic objects and original houses of the time. (Original) O jardim é libdo. Tem um campo de girassóis que porcionam lindas fotos. O museum é bem deversificado, focado na vida dos antigos moradores imigrantes que formaram esse país . Tem objetos autenticos e casas originais da época.
It may just be the time of year we had chosen to visit mid August. But the trails were not marked clearly. Many of the plants had already bloomed. We did not go into the museum as it looked very unkept.
Beautiful place! Great to bring kids or just to walk around and enjoy nature.
Love the trails here.
Awesome place for an event. Its like going to the country yet being right in the middle of the City!
So so pretty! Would recommend to anyone
Wonderful displays of historic homes and other items.
Nature on constant display in all months of the year !! Get lost in splendid forest trails for a few hours and return completely relaxed !!
I enjoy these beautiful grounds with my young children. Nature is the perfect teacher! Take a day to just walk around and enjoy the classes.
Not really interesting for myself
The outside attractions are nice but the grounds aren't kept up anymore. There are many cool old thing inside to see if you're into antique things from long ago.
Love this place. So peaceful and Serene. And you can't beat the scenery
Beautiful scenery, very good place to experience nature in the city
Beautiful place.
