***UPDATE I have started going to AJ's again as my coworks love the outside grill and I enjoy my fresh salad. I can say that lately the salad bar has been on point! I appreciate AJs and their staff for this. Their Salad Bar sucks. They fail at stocking it with common salad items and there is so much inconsistency. Their protein choices varies from having chicken, ham, eggs, to only eggs. They have chicken available but are too lazy to stock the salad bar. Additionally the vegetable choice varies and items that are not eaten (raw asparagus stalks) are stocked two days in a row, while they are missing basic salad items like Cucumbers. Additionally their dressings are never labeled and it's a guessing game as to what you are eating. On the plus side their staff is very pleasant while I piece together my salad with behind the counter items.

I was very disappointed with the mini cupcakes I purchased from the bakery. I bought a variety of flavors for a group event and the only cake that didn't get a complaint was the red velvet. The white and chocolate cupcakes were extremely dry and lacked flavor. They tasted old and stale. I would suggest asking if the bakery items are freshly made prior to purchasing. On a high note - the frosting was good and the staff was very friendly.

Super bummed the prepared food area has gone downhill. Everything I’ve previously purchased was delish! It tastes like a new head chef or staff that just don’t care about presentation. Two slices left of their quiche, however both had looked like they were dropped on the floor, due to bad slicing. I commented on it and the response was We don’t due discounts. I wasn’t really asking for one, but I certainly didn’t think anyone should pay full price. They should have been thrown out, or sampled out for customers. I’ve stopped in two days in a row and the lack of quality and taste is enough to not be stopping back at this store. Shame.

Do not go here if you are lactose intolerant! Really terrible customer service. Asked about finding a treat for lactose intolerant friend and was told "I can find that sort of thing at a health food store." Really? Cater to the Gluten-free crowd but if someone can't produce lactase... I'll take my business elsewhere.

I just wanted to give a shout out to The wonderful lady working in the floral department, on homecoming night 9-22-18. My son totally spaced on getting his girlfriend a corsage . I called down in a panic and the lady went out of her way to quickly make him one … What a relief after frys turned me away. It turned out beautiful, thank U thank U again! This is a awesome store to find very good quality food from all over the world. Unfortunately I was VERY disappointed to see Morel mushrooms at $78.00 per lb. Not only is this an outrageous, ridiculously over priced product but they are tiny, dried, pathetic looking morel's. Absolutely NOT worth $78 a lb!!

This is an overpriced fake alternative grocery store. All they have is dairy products to put in my $5 coffee , their meats have sodium nitrate in them, food coloring in their products. Honestly if you're not careful you'll just go home with some poor Quality overpriced crap. I wouldn't even put AJ's in the Whole Foods or Trader Joe's category. Their quality comes nowhere close to health food. It's so disappointing.

I used to shop here literally daily... Then I started just buying meat here, as the prices for items you can purchase at any grocery are ridiculous... However, I've had many recent experiences, particularly with the butcher's area, which have forced my to reconsider even that limited buying... AJ's is an AMAZING place for pasteries, hard to find items like caviar and fois gras, and some of the best cuts of meats... BUT, for the price mark-ups I expect some degree of service, and that element- especially at this particular store, have almost completely disappeared... I even tried to contact the manager last week three separate times only to be placed on hold for so long that twice I eventually hung up and the third time the call was "disconnected"... I assume accidentally, but seriously, it's ridiculous. I am sending a letter to the store manager, but based on the experiences I've had over the last year, each one worse than the last, I don't plan on returning to the regular customer I used to be.

"Sorry we are out of all the Cuaban sandwich ingredients, ok I will have an Italian with Mortadella. Sorry the mortadella is apparently only sold by the lb. Ok I'll have the Italian with no pepperoni or proscuitto. Sorry, we are out of the olive salad! " So the deli clerk calls over the manager and claims we are making a scene. YMBFJ! SO LONG AJ'S ITS BEEN A MISERABLE 2 YEARS. Dont waste your time the Safeway across the road is a much nicer store. You should be ashamed of yourselves!

THE OUTSIDE GRILL... Staffed by hard-working people who really make sure they’ve got everybody’s order correct and are extremely pleasant, especially given how busy they get sometimes!. They have a great selection out there from Kobe beef burgers to really good bratwurst,to a wonderful chicken sandwich which is grilled and super oversized, which is my favorite!!! ...I really like the pretzel bun. Soooo fresh- smells great!! ..They also make a tasty nice-portioned ribeye and you have your choice from a very large shallow, refrigerated condiment bin where you can pick fresh lettuce/tomato/ onion, sauerkraut, pickles, ketchup/mustard/ mayonnaise the works! You also can make it a “meal” by adding some really good chips that they carry and /or macaroni salad and they have other good sides “Ernesto “ is usually the grill master...he really keeps up as you see behind clear partition your own dish. It’s fun, as sometimes you can identify your own entree and “track” it from refrigerator to stay hot container.. When I spoke with Ernesto today, this proud gentleman was BEAMING, as he had something very SPECIAL to announce—he JUST got his USA citizenship!! Congratulations! “Stephanie” and “ Chris” are the other main players, operating well asa relaxed, efficient team. No panic, just good fare fast... Make sure you tell them what degree of cooking you desire as, sometimes you may not be asked.. Also my recommendation when you order grilled chicken is to specify not to overcook it. It may be on the tough side otherwise,, Just once this happened to me, they did a redo, and it was awesome tender-fresh!! So please take that to heart for best!! “Chris” is just a great, smiling, smart, sincere, true foodie,, who really, really cares.. He went “over and above” big time today for me—on something that he was not even involved in-/ I forgot something, left it on table. I came back for it.. So he found out by being nice and asking me what I lost.. Then he disappeared inside. He emerged back out to me, smiling, with a replacement//at NO CHARGE! ..Cool. Thanks, C!...Also sometimes “Teresa” is outside, not so much lately tho’ unless needed as sub, I think. She and Stephanie and Juan were the first people I ever had help me outside. ..been awhile... )). So,,, Last but DEFINITELY not least is Super Stephanie. She would be the main part in the success story of AJ’s al fresco. That says it all. She is indispensable for sure..Yes, she has been there since I moved nearby (7-8yrs ago..) , and she just gets nicer and NICER each time I see her!!...I do not even know how that is possible, lol! Seriously, tho’ ,,she’s just a delight//helps everyone like family. (Yes, Chris & Ernesto do too!

Nice fine goods grocery store. Fancy, olives to cheese and meats. You name it, they have it. Very nice and great customer service. The only thing I wish, was that you could sample their cheeses. Back in Nevada at Smith's grocery, you could sample that and olives. Because some of the cheeses I would like to buy and try are pretty exspensive, so I don't want to buy it and no one will eat it. But overall, great place!!

It's okay. It's overpriced but that's to be expected. I'm not impressed with the quality of the produce. They are nothing better than Fry's and may be lagging behind Sprouts. But their prices are about twice as high. Haven't tasted the produce, but honestly there wasn't a huge selection. These are tomatoes that I grew. This is what good produce looks like. Didn't take a picture of their produce. It wasn't foodie worthy.

Pretty snooty all around. The pastry counter server was very rude, I couldn't find anyone to assist me with cheese and bistro counter server bypassed me twice. I had to tell her that I was next (even though we made eye contact several times). I know AJ's likes to cater to the young wealthy urban moms, but every once in a while the rest of us end up needing to shop there for one reason or another (even if it is just to remind ourselves why we don't shop there on a regular basis).

While it's a beautiful high end store the price of everyday and even some specialty products are so grossly over priced I find it difficult to shop here. Last night I purchased a granola bite type snack from Sprouts for $1.99. Today I saw the exact item in AJ for $6.99, no exaggeration. Their baked goods are amazing and worth every dollar. Great wine selection and gourmet items just be wary of the prices

A grocery store with many high end brands. We love coming here to find unique items for dining at home, quality cuts of meat and fish, a huge selection of cheeses and a will stocked liquor section. They also have fresh made sushi, tasty sandwiches from the deli, and a great bakery. My favorite is stopping by to get their flavored lemonade or tea. It's great and refreshing...I am drinking one now!

AJ's is a great place. They carry a lot of hard to find item most grocery stores don't carry. The fresh meat section is awesome because they have everything and can easily tell you where they got it from (a lot of it being local). They even age their own beef. AJ's has a full sushi bar and deli. Deli items always seem fresh and the sushi bar can make you anything you want. There is a make your own salad bar as well. AJ's bakery is amazing and has a huge beautiful variety. There is a complete liquor section which carries all the favorites plus a ton of different kinds of wines and beer. If you want something they do not carry you can request a special order. The staff is very well trained and helpful too. Kind of like the staff at a fancy resort. The only down side is that they are a little more expensive than most grocery stores. But given what they offer and the great staff I would say well worth it.

Went in to get an ice tea and they had 5 customers standing there, no way to tell who was next. Service staff didn't seem knowledgable. When asked if they had a number system like the AJs at Casa Paloma the employee said" no that is the uniqueness of our store, they will never get one" and went on to serve someone else. FYI can not imagine getting something here when it was really busy.

I would give this 7 stars if I could. Have been going to AJ's for years for absolutely everything. From their blue cheese/bacon Angus burgers, to their scratch kitchen hot meals, to sushi and the wine selection is "amazing"!! The pastry area and iced coffee is the bomb and do NOT even think of leaving the produce area without filling up your cart. Everything is displayed so lovely. Such a great experience walking thru the florist area and whimsy household "chingers". Love love love

A month ago, I got both tuna and crunchy chicken salad for lunches. When I went to eat it, I scooped up a long hair in it. I was horrified. I stayed away from the deli for a month. Today, I thought I would take my chances on tuna salad again. As soon as someone came to take my order, I looked down and saw a huge black hair in the macaroni salad in front of it. I told the man I would not be ordering from the deli every again. Please be very aware! Absolutely unsanitary and unacceptable.

Do you like amazing food, fresh off the grill? AJ's outdoor BBQ not only has extremely low prices for the same high quality fresh food they sell in their store, but it tastes amazing as well. Whether you want a Burger, Sausage, fresh fish, or even a Black Bean or Veggie Burger, they make it all well. My favorite are their burgers but you honestly can't go wrong. Easily exceeds in quality and taste against some of the best burger joints in AZ. The only downside is for someone who likes all the excess and variety of toppings

Shopping AJ's since the mid 80's, Frankloyd and Raintree I enjoy shopping the best, for the best and worst reasons: Best: Megan in Seafood, she greets everyone as a friend and really communicates with the customer like she care about them, I really enjoy her positive caring attitude. Meats, the people behind the counter are very helpful, quick and polite. Pastry, quick service and very polite, awesome selection always Poor: Deli, good God, 4 people talking as I am always waiting to be helped with. This is the worst section of the entire store, I actually want to buy more at this counter but because it is such a turn off and hassle, I wait to go to Sprouts for Deli. Check out, NEVER enough check out people on staff. Suggestion, have a check out for 5 items or less, your coffee and pastry customers would be very happy.

Incredibly overpriced, have to return items that were awful. Don't consider buying wine here... Costco has a better wine selection with supportive guidance, with a much better price... But not a fancy tasting area. If you're not a Costco member, some of the Safeway stores have some great prices, albeit not all of the stores have the same size and selection. Basically, check your basic grocery store out for wines, groceries, etc., before you land in AJ's.

We bought the Holiday Turkey dinner last year and were very satisfied so we decided to do it again this year to very different results. When we got home with the meal and saw the turkey I could'nt believe my eyes, it was so small I actually weighed it . it was 10.4 oz exactely. I contacted the store and was told that the 16-18 pds advertized are the before cooking weight. I have cooked a few turkeys in my 70 yrs never saw one lose 8 pds during cooking. Will take my business elsewhere next year!

Dont even bother trying to call in a pizza order. Most of the time they dont answer and if they do they claim the pizza oven is shut down early. If they dont want business they wont get it. Why post hours online if you dont ever follow them. Its unfortunate because the pizza looks really good but I have yet to be able to try it. Guess I'll just spend my money elsewhere.

Great grocery store with an upscale feeling. It's a little pricey, but I really enjoy the atmosphere. I particularly enjoyed their bakery. They have great desserts that taste out of this world. I had a little salad from their salad bar and then pigged out on dessert. Would recommend

I have been shopping at this store since they opened and have always relied upon excellent service from them. I tried to call in a special meat order to have it ready for Christmas Eve as I have always done. The butcher refused to prepare my order in advance because he said they, "were on defcon five and had 200 advance orders to get ready." He assured me that if they could get it ready while I waited and that I could trust them to take care of my order in person. I went to the counter this morning (Christmas Eve) and asked for my fresh ground meat for steak tartar. He refused to grind it for me and insisted that I should buy what he had ground "this morning". This is not the service I am accustomed to nor is it acceptable. We will have to vary our Christmas Eve tradition unless Signature Fry's in Paradise Valley will step in and save the day.

Another reviewer had commented on the deli department staff's attitude. I couldn't agree more. So we can't order a pizza at 7pm??? That's dinner time. When we got there they had one slice of pepperoni left, so we asked the girl how long it would take to make a large. She responded, when our pizza "chef" comes back , it will take about 20min. Then she says, oh look here she is. Ok, so another kid takes our order because the girl who we were talking to decides to just leave ( there were no other people waiting for help, she just decided to ignore us). After we placed our order, they come back to tell us that they don't make pizza anymore because it is too late. Really??? 7pm is too late?? Anyway, the staff who works in the deli ( including dreadlocks) all seem to have the same don't bother me, I hate my job attitude. The stove was on and 4 people just standing around not willing to make a pizza.... ***I'm back because I have to give props to Stephanie the grill chef( hope that is her name). She is AWESOME with a great attitude. She cooks my ribeye to perfection! Everyone always gravitates towards the grill because it's always fresh.

***Update 11/30/18 --TOM MGR HELPd me FIXED PROB NICE!recently REALLY discovered AJ's for dinner I have a cancer patient neighbor whom I've been getting dinner for every night. Due to her conditn, it's difficult for her to get out or prepare food. It dawned on me why not take advantage of their Deli and sushi bar- She loves sushi so let's start there. Sushi: Jeremy is the sushi chef extraordinaire! He knows his way around raw fish. And they have the best rice there. They test it before they serve it! It's cooked w light dose of sushi oil, makes it sticky- tasty! The most popular item is soft shell crab hand roll. The prices are very reasnbl, esp compared to N Scottsdale seafood places. Delicacies at a workingperson's price

I just ran in to get dessert for tonight's dinner. Great selection of sweets, nicely displayed. The quality is always good although I have not tried what I bought today. Staff were helpful but did not listen well. At first I was just looking, when she asked again I said I was ready but she said your still looking and went to next person.

Fee looking for hard to find food items high quality pasta choices or unique sauces and flavors of all kinds this is a good spot for you. AJ's Carrie's most of everything that you need in a really small package. Sometimes it's nice to slowly brows up and down the aisles and discover what you want to cook for dinner. It's the kind of experience that you won't get at a regular grocery store.

Good place for tea on a summer morning. Awesome selection of teas, coffees, and pastries. With misters on the patio it makes the morning in July beatable. Back in November for a burger on the patio. The place is crazy busy for lunch so plan on waiting.

We consider this our new restaurant for: breakfast, lunch grill, sushi, sandwiches, deli cases, tea, desserts, wine, cheese, bread, hot lunch, pizza, and basically any specialty item for which you are craving. Great and quite enjoyable outdoor seating area for eating anything you buy right onsite. Customer service is outstanding. Cash registers at every location so you can buy, eat/drink and keep looking. Prices for onsite food, especially breakfast, sushi and the grill are fantastic. The quality is better than almost all restaurants in all of the aforementioned categories. We go there now instead of going out, as there is something for everyone. I could go on, but you need to experience it for yourself.

I always struggle with a retailer that will not train or retain someone who can train or mentor good baristas for their coffee/espresso biz. My cappuccino was over heated and as a result induces bitterness in the drink. Also poor foam and a thin mousse. Not going to order this again.

I want to love this store and I mostly do until I walk up to get a cart. Every cart has bird poop on them. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM!! Which is sooooo unsanitary, it’s a shock that more do not complain and management hasn't done anything even without the complaints. I’ve complained to cashiers and now here in hopes something is done about it. I may call the health department because it’s soooo wrong and gross. I am forced to use a hand basket(which are pretty dirty too but at least no fecal matter) inside of carts. This is a GROCERY store not a garden center. Shameful. Fingers crossed someone does something about it and soon!

Have lived in McDowell Mtn for 19 years and always enjoyed AJ's till the last 3 months...Sorry to say the place has become a PIT...been in the store for 4 days in a row and find the salad bar a complete mess....soup bar has soup spilled all over the pots....couldn't find a napkin to save my soul...the deli counter ...HORRIBLE...a bowl of macaroni salad was actually green and has not been changed out in days....on the other hand the butcher shop in back was immaculate and inviting...please please clean up your store.....not gong back for awhile

I went for a nice bouquet of flowers for my wife’s birthday. I saw there was no packet of food and looked around for an extra but didn’t find one. At checkout I asked the cashier for a packet of food and she said there weren’t extras to give away and it was probably buried in the bouquet. I got home and there was no packet, as I could see in the store. The flowers are nice but it was more of a Walmart experience than a boutique grocery store experience. However, I didn’t pay Walmart prices.
