Clean. Excellent fried oysters. Great, tasty sweet potato and good coleslaw. Service was above reproach, and the decor was pleasing and homey. Prices typical for sea food. Highly recommended.

My family has been going to eat at the Sanitary for over 25 years. It never disappoints! The food is fresh and delicious, the staff are wonderful and the atmosphere is very relaxing. The children's menu has good options for picky eaters and the seating is very child friendly. The Sanitary also has probably the most delicious blueberry cheesecake i have ever tasted! We will continue visiting this spot every year when we are in the area.

Roy Brown

Visited 7/17/2019 for lunch on our first day trip to Morehead City. There were several waterfront restaurants from which to choose, so we picked Sanitary for its shaded outdoor seating overlooking the water. I like any place that serves soft crabs, so I was right at home. The spouse enjoyed the crab cake special, which was seasoned better than many NC crab cakes, but still required more Old Bay seasoning. Our server was amusing, as she explained that soft crabs are eaten "legs and all," and cautioned us about the seasoning in the crab cake.

Jeff Batten

Dark and felt like a basement. Feels very old. Could not see out of windows due to condensation. Fried blue fish was really good though.

FatRuss 79

Very slow service and no one was there! Food very greasy, underwhelming and overpriced! Only good thing was the view outside

Patricia Putz

Lots of good food for the money!! Staff friendly.

John Barnes

OMG- THE FOOD WAS A.10+GREAT SERVICE10+VERY CLEAN10+@MILTARY FRIENDLY

no name daring

I ordered a clam chowder and I was expecting it to be the regular creamy chowder with the tomatoes and all the other food stuff but what I got was a clear type of broth and they put tiny foods in their and called it bogue chowder??

Sherri Duffy

The best !!! Been coming here since 1964. I live in Idaho now, came back for a visit and they were #1 on my list.

Seamoss3

Very friendly watress. Food was good and plentiful. Prices a bit high, but no different than any other seafood restaurant at the beach. The hushpuppies could use some sweetener in the mix. Awesome mix drinks though.

Linda Jones

Very clean, professional, friendly, and quality work!

matt dreps

What a disappointment! I used to come here all the time with my family on trips to the beach and the food was good. The place is a landmark in Morehead City, but the food no longer lives up to the hype. Our lunch for two with no alcohol was $54, and it wasn't even that good--rubbery shrimp and bland scallops We had better seafood miles away in Kinston.

Just Me

I was pleasantly surprised. The food was...really good. Now it was lunch, and I had the baby flounder special, but I was not expecting to leave there as satisfied as I did. The food was hot and fresh. Our waitress was good. I gave this place one more try after years of having written them off. Glad I did. Hope this is the new normal.

Chad Littleton

I had heard about this place for years and while skeptical, I was happy that it more than lived up to its reputation. Fresh, delicious seafood, hot and crispy hushpuppies, excellent service, and great prices made for a wonderful atmosphere. There's a Who's Who of pictures across the walls of famous visitors and relaxing views of the water. I will definitely be back when in the Morehead City area. Highly recommended!

allen randall

It was very good, the service and ocean views were awesome. I ordered a steak medium it was a bit more on the medium well side no pink at all, the sides were kind of bland, however the flavor of the steak and snow crab made up for everything. I also suggest getting the blueberry cheesecake as a dessert.

Eddie Arbegast

Had shrimp and flounder and bay scallops plus crabcakes the food was great and service was great and price was on point.

larry tucker

Great whole flounder at good price on lunch menu.

Jesse Barney

Good for getting a large group seated. Good for kids. A little expensive for what you get because the food is nothing special.

Paul Garris

Everything was great. A really nice place to eat seafood..

Ryan Salter

My family and I ate here last night (February 22, 2019) the waitress was awesome making sure we had everything we needed and the main meal was good also! The only thing wrong was hush puppies didn't taste fresh.

Maricela Salazar

as soon as you walk in the place smells old. Ok, I assumed because the market is first before you get tot he actual restaurant. The service is good and the restaurant itself is pretty clean. However from the menu to the food, it lacks taste. Menu food looks old and unappetizing(ok I know it’s just the menu picture but I want to imagine I am getting exactly what I see in picture). Cook-out hush puppies taste SOO much better than this restaurant. The food was tasteless. I am not a person who put salt on food but this time, it was the exception. I had to put salt and drench my sirloin in A-1 sauce. My salad looked it came out from a bag and not crispy fresh. My green beans like they came from the hospital/nursing home. The restaurant has great potential because it has a BEAUTIFUL VIEW but just the way the food is, I wouldn’t come back here even if it was free. From reading other reviews from people who had been to this restaurant before(some from many years) the taste of the food has been going down hill. As a first timer, I can tell you that the food is awful.

Carolyn Wayland

Great baked potato, kind waiter- the fried shrimp was soggy, the scallops rubbery and the broiled trout dry. Not how I remembered years ago. That’ll be my last time! Overpriced too

Bryan & Sue Beaver

Mouth watering chocolate meringue pie ever! Just like my momma used to make!

Mathew Rushing

High prices but good portions so it works out well.

Banner Williams

The First time back here in years. Ordered the fried Flounder and so did my friend, excellent. Best baked sweet potato I've ever eaten. Good food, excellent service. Will go back soon to try other dishes.

Naiche Villarreal

It's got great food and I nice environment great people nice place to relax and enjoy your meal

Laura Coltrain

Food was not fresh and did not taste good. Scallops were spongy.

Melissa Dehnel

My friends have been coming here since high school when visiting Morehead. We were in town and stopped in to eat. I will start off by saying our waitress was just lovely. The food was horrible. We ordered appetizers. Each took a bite of them and then we paid and left. The calamari was clearly frozen and then fried. Perfect round circles. The Mariana sauce had been microwaved. You could telling by the popping on the edge of the bowl. The crab dip was probably frozen and reheated also. No flavor. The view is lovely and the service was good that is why they got a two and not a one. We were very disappointed.

George H

As most say, the "remaining staff' was great - overworked as 2 chefs didn't show up the day we went in. The food was pretty much terrible. The crab dip was the worst we've ever had. I had the crab/fish stuffed potato the waitress recommended and it sucked. The fish looked small and over fried. The only good food was the fettuccine alfredo my wife ordered. Again, our waitress was wonderful and the only reason this place has any stars.

Frankie D

Lived here all my life and this place is still the greatest, friendlist and most chill place on the waterfront to eat.. Good food, good people, excellent atmosphere.

Clifton Harper

Good food selections, good service personnel, good price. It has changed along with the times as they say. I went frequently as a child with my family.

Bennett Todd

Delicious food, friendly service. Many choices of seafood as well as side dishes. The hush puppies are also great.

Zach Joyner

A staple of Atlantic Beach. If you go to the beach you have to go here. They have any great food at reasonable prices. As of April 2019 they have a appetizer and two entree deal for $26.50.

Debracca Bonds

The food was really good and they give you a lot. Our waitress Penny was so sweet and attentive. Loved the water views!

Matt Petty

We are from out of town, and always try to find unique places wherever we go to get the local flavor. I wanted to stop here just because of the funny name, and when we saw it has been around since 1938, we figured it must be worth a try. The service was great right off the bat, and unfortunately, the service was the best part of the meal. The menu is large and appears to be pretty reasonably priced. However, the execution is where it gets dicey. I ordered the big sampler meal, and was dismayed to find that the food had almost no flavor. For 35 bucks, I expected shrimp, oysters, scallops, soft shell crab, and the "our choice" fried fish to be bursting with flavor, but what I got was fried food with absolutely no seasoning. It was bland at best. My wife ordered the crab cake, and it was the best thing we ate. Had I got that instead, I would likely have given 4 stars. Also, who gives margarine for a baked potato? I'm eating a plate full of fried food-indulge me with some real butter! As I said before, the service was great-our server handled our large, loud family with aplomb and did a great job of anticipating our needs. I just wish she was serving food that was worthy of her abilities.

Nick Hoxsey

Was really good. The hush puppies were good. The server was polite and patient. Will be back when I visit the beach.

Cara Wood

Tonight I went here with my family and I'll say we have been here a few times previously and had no problems. However tonight's service took longer, and I get things get backed up, I've worked in the food service industry, I understand. So when we finally ordered, two family members ordered a club. The server said that those are not currently being served at dinner because it takes too long to get them made. Okay, so then a family member of mine orders another sandwich but asks if it can be made as a wrap, server says no problem. When the food is brought out my scallops and fries are cooler than I expected, but fine. The family member who ordered the wrap notices it does not have cheese as she had asked and just mentions it to the server. The server proceeds to say "Well honestly, it was really hard to even get the kitchen to make the wrap so I can bring you provolone and you can put it on there if you'd like." ... Now I know sometimes a kitchen can be difficult, but this server should have made sure the kitchen could and would even make it a wrap before saying it was no problem. Because knowing they wouldn't do it, something else could have been ordered and this could all be avoided. It was just inconvenient and unfair to the patron to say that they can have something no problem, and then make them feel wrong in the end for even asking for it, especially when you could say no we cannot do that. A server should always check with the kitchen and/or management before saying things can be done. More so, if you can't make a club in the evenings for your customers, remove it from the dinner menu completely.

Betty Shingleton

Food was delicious but my scenery was even better!!! It was so peaceful!! The shrimp and crab stuffed potato was an excellent choice!! It was also stuffed with bacon and cheese too!!! Great service by friendly staff too!! Definitely will go back!!

Kimberly Bunting

Nice atmosphere! Food was excellent! Had a nice view out windows from inside. Family friendly.

Will Nevergettobeme

We got skipped over by the hostess not writing us on the board. The management more than made up for it in service and on the check. Great service spectacular food. Deserts were amazing!!! Highly recommend it!

Millicent Morley

We've been coming to Sanitary restaurant for 50 years. Love the new bar and the art on walls. The floors and chairs are childhood memories. We spent our summers first in Beaufort then at Atlantic beach and the Sanitary was always first and last stops. Highlights are hush puppies fish of the day iced tea desserts and taffies.

thinkofme1 One

We've eaten at this restaurant for many years and everytime we visit the service and food are excellent!!

Randy Hobbs

Pretty good for a tourist trap..They do have FRESH BLUE AND HARD HEADED MULLETT!!

Jessica Jordan

The view from inside was great. The atmosphere was laid back, which was great going in with 4 young kids. The food was wonderful! I felt I got plenty of food for the price, especially the kids meals. The waitress was friendly and on top of things.

Neil Buie

Good but not as good as I remembered from college days.

Lindy Eatherington

Fantastic crab cakes and their chocolate meringue pie is out of this world. It's the number I reason we go back! Service was excellent!!

Salou Newman

Great waterfront location Always great food and service Historical stop! Family favorite tradition 4th generation

Joe Kaczur

Great tasting food, large portion sizes the staff was pleasant and knowledgeable. We had a person with celiac disease and they had a gluten free menu with decent options.

JAMES WILLIAMS

We had a family meal today. The service, food, and the value on the lunch menu were excellent. This place is spacious and cool. There is history; and there are good views all around you.

Dan Bickel

Fantastic service and very speedy.

Donna Guin

Drink specials good. Shrimp & grits was very good as were the fried oysters. Fairly comparable to prices in similar establishments. Flounder filet was soggy and boney, so not more stars. Service was good but not great.

Olivia Short

pretty good food, and the outside seating has a pretty view

Steve Walence

Disappointed in the clam chowder. Nothing but potatoes and clams. Service was slow. Food got cold. Prices were very high.

Wyatt Mrozkowski

The fettuccini Alfredo was bomb and PJ, our waiter, gave some of the best service I've ever seen.

Kevin O'Neil

Haven’t been to Sanitary in six years but we are spending a week nearby with family and we all wanted to visit one of our favorite restaurants. Went for lunch. Seated quickly and drinks were ordered. Not many people there. Drinks took ten minutes, hush puppies another 5 and finally asked about our order after another 5-10 minutes. Waited 25 minutes more for food that was mediocre at best and some that really were not worth eating due to lack of taste (fish tacos, special of the day crab cake, fried ocra, etc). None of the meals were good. What a disappointment.

T I

The prices were high for the quality of food and service. The prices are always higher near the water, but you could spend near the same money elsewhere and get better quality. I understand the need for portion control, but my particular meal, the presentation left much to be desired. There was nothing spectacular about the taste of my meal. If the prices were lower, then I think it would better match the food quality and presentation. Service is relatively quick on my day here, so you don't need to worry about that.

Jack Kerwin

Create atmosphere great service great prices and plenty of food. Worth every dime and more

Susan Forsythe

Food was cold but tasty. Not very busy. Waiter war great.

Adam Walkowiak

This place is a staple and we stop in every year that we are in Moorehead City. They always have fresh catch of the day and the she crab soup was very good. If your in the area I recommend checking this place out. There is a great view overlooking the water and everyone working there has been very friendly.

Vicki Babner

This was a good restaurant for food but prices are a little bit high

Carolina M.

I’m surprised by some of the reviews for Sanitary. We have gone for years and our family is finally letting go of the tradition. The food has been consistently deteriorating for years. I took my two kids about a month ago and paid $70 for food that tasted like frozen dinners. We had the fried flounder. If the owners return to its tradition of good food and family friendly prices, we’ll be back. But it will basically take a relaunch to convince us.

Samantha Rowley

The shrimp and grits was killer! So yummy and a generous portion size!!

Mark Oglesby

Sanitary is a landmark for our county. Everyone coming here should experience it.

Donald Brewster

Excellent service, very pleasant young lady served us tonight. Our dinner was served hot and very tasty would recommend eating here.

Harry Wease

Not as good as the reviews. Pleasant staff. Seafood, well I have had better for less.

Steve Trosky

The food was ok. Nothing special. There are better seafood restaurants in the area. If you order anything broiled, ask for melted butter. It apparently doesn't automatically come with the meal.

rodwoo17

Went here as a child with gr8 memories of eating with family. Still has a good view with the waterfront. The food was only okay. The worst thing was serving macaroni'n cheese that was obviously from a 50 cent box!

Jerry Dudley

The food was great had the most tender fried shrimp I ever had. My wife and I went there for our 26th anniversary meal. Great food and Great service. I even got a chance to talk to the owner that is 88 years young & we talked about how much things have changed. When Sanitary fish Market & Restaurant open in 1938 you could get a sea food platter for 88 cents & breakfast for 25 cents.

Michelle Ladd

Was quiet Sunday late lunch, food was fresh and quick to come out. Service was great. Was seated over looking water.

Kimberly Bergin

I love it here. Delicious food and great views. I will be going again soon

James Brooks

Great food and service. Very friendly and quick service.

James Pettigrew

Excellent soft shell crabs.

Ashley Younes

Amazing food and friendly staff! Beautiful view❤

Tyrel Greenough

The staff was friendly and fun. Great food and an even better view

Kara Schenk

We went based on recommendations. The staff was polite and helpful. But the food was awful. Chocolate milkshakes (hard to mess up) for the kids were kind of yucky. Salad was average. The first dish of scallops I ordered came with a prominently-placed human hair. I took one bite of the scallops they brought to replace it and pushed it aside. I'd like to think I'm not that picky, but it was inedible. The next day I spent the afternoon with a horrible headache, nauseated, and eventually expelling all my stomach contents. I'm not sure if Sanitary Fish Market gave me food poisoning, but I'm suspicious. The (one) beer I had was great! And, to emphasize, we had no issues whatsoever with our waitress, who was as helpful as she could be. I wanted to like the restaurant. But I won't go back.

RBO

Great food, wonderful service.

Hazel Hughes

Service was okay. My hot dog was very, VERY charred and crispy to perfection. French fries were under cooked.

James Lewis

This is the place for a simple seafood meal. Nothing fancy. Everything I remember about the way my grandparents and great grandparents cooking.

Sugar Sprinkles

Good food and tou and eat outside with view of the water

Westley Hollamon

Always wanted to try and finally did. Food came out fast. Went for lunch and it was not too crowded. They have a lunch special menu that is cheaper than regular price. The popcorn shrimp were tiny compared to most places and the portion was skimpy. The squash casserole was amazing as well as the hush puppies. The service was attentive and friendly. Overall I think the place is overrated and there are plenty of options in the area. I do respect the history and lineage of the place though, just wish my meal was better.

Scott Kozloff

Gave this place for stars basically for the extremely efficient and friendly service of the staff. The food itself probably ranks at 3 stars, however the staff is so efficient, and does such a good job at least for us, that I gave it the extra star since it is a people place. If you are in the area, you still may want to check this out with your family

Roxanne Tate

Great atmosphere, delicious fresh food!

Fred Redmon

Great.....crab cakes and blackened flounder was delicious.

Larry Lancaster

Been going since a young boy, still good seafood and hush puppies. Eat there every trip to Morehead and Atlantic Beach.

Gina Lacy

Just ate very disappointed went before not satisfied so figure give another chance another disappointment fish greassy and hush not good tea not sweet the waitress saying the is usually not sweet there we had sweet tea before is not a southern tea over all not happy me and my all family do not recommended

Sam Iam

Beautiful view, friendly and courteous staff. The seafood was fresh and well prepared! It's no wonder why this place has lasted so long! Would love to come again!

Nathan Zalman

The Hush Puppies are still great. As for the rest, not so much. I had the conch chowder. It was poorly seasoned (tasted mostly of flour and skim milk), dominated by over-large dumplings. The broiled bluefish was skimpy & charred around the edges (I didn't order blackened). They've recovered beautifully from the last hurricane (they were closed for repairs for five months), but the food is the same old mediocre Calabash it's always been. We'll stop by on our way to the Outer Banks next year, too, because that's what we do.

Travel Bugg

The waitress was very friendly and helpful; but for what you pay, one would think you'd get fall-out-the-seat taste. My fish had no taste--not even as much as salt and pepper. The potato salad taste like plain mayo. Even the vinegar with peppers wasn't even hot. The string beans and hushpuppy were good. My sister paid about $35 at lunch for her combo plate of shrimp and oysters with tea Again, no taste and her oysters were wet and mushy on the inside--to the point where she couldn't eat them all. What a disappointment on our first visit to THE Sanitary.

alan Rose

It was just okay nothing special my service was not the greatest the waitress did not come check on us very much at all and my slaw tasted like vinegar the seafood taste it okay not the best I've ever had.

Teresa Biggers

After eating here for many years, I have finally found a dish that is healthy, delicious and filling, the CAPTAIN’S SALAD – FRESH GARDEN SALAD Topped with cold boiled shrimp $13.95

Misha Amerikanski

I've been coming here for over 40 years as a non-local. It's popular with locals and tourists alike. It's next to the dock, and extends out over the water, with indoor and outdoor seating. When they say fresh, they mean 'caught that day'. There is a bar, but it's a family atmosphere. They advertise plainly that if you're drunk, they don't want your business. A relatively recent addition is a small ice cream parlor. Plenty of parking across the street. Excellent food with heavy emphasis on local seafood

Elizabeth Hoult

I recommend the hushpuppies and fried shrimp!! So good! Potato salad was a lil soupy though. Overall I have never been disappointed here.

Nancy Piner

Beautiful vistas to enjoy while dining. Friendly staff. Fish tacos were delicious, but the salad was straight out of the bag - it had not been rinsed and tasted strongly of chemicals. I have been there several times throughout the years and the seafood does not disappoint.

Paul Scheibler

Always a pleasure to spend time with friends and have a wonderful seafood dinner.

Danyetta Goddard

Went there the other day with a group of friends from church and I was disappointed to say the least. The service was POOR and the seafood was just BARLEY mediocre. It took 2 HOURS for our food to come out and our waitress Susan didn’t update us on the progress of our dinner until I asked her what was the hold up. To top it off when I ordered the soft crab sandwich Susan asked me did I know what soft crab was. I told her yes and gave the description and she went on to ask me did I google it!?!? WTF does matter if I did or not, I know what I’m ordering Susan and If I didn’t like it, it was going to get sent back REGARDLESS!!! Needless to say, I will not be going back.

John Madden

As always the food was outstanding. Had lunch there yesterday and my early birthday dinner tonight. All the food for both of us was cooked perfectly and fresh. I've been coming here for 30 years and have NEVER had a complaint. Food is always great and the staff is always friendly and attentive.

Charlie Burris

Great seafood, nice view on the water if you sit outside!

Bob Appleby

Excellent food and service as always. Will keep coming back to enjoy eating both inside and outside.

Bella G

Amazing restaurant & really good food. We came in from Wake County & there were other people there from Wake County also. This is home for us.

Olivia Liverman

It was great food and friendly staff, I will try it again.

Sharon Hill

Love love love the broiled blue fish. Yum! Server was on point and very kind.

eastdoors .

Good food, upgraded alot from years ago. Service is very good and friendly. A bit pricey but usually worth it as the seafood is as fresh as you can get. Desserts are awesome too.

Errol Oguzhan

Really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere. Had a great lunch on the back patio overlooking the inner waterway. Wait staff was very friendly and attentive.

Lin Church

We have liked Tony's since 1950!

Martin Lunsford

Meh... the food was just OK. It's obvious that they just cater to the tourists. I seriously doubt the locals eat here. There are much better and cheaper places to get fresh local seafood.

Scott Debruin

Food aplenty. Enough to split a meal. Friendly service

Jim Woolwine

Dinner was served lukewarm. Soup and flounder were excellent, other entrés less so.

Carol Roden

Decor was nice, servers were nice, and food was fine. We were looking for peel and eat shrimp but it was not on the menu that day.

Jeff Mitchell

Like seafood. Then just do it.

Julie A. P. Parker

This large seafood restaurant that sits on the waterfront is an incredible place to have a meal. They have plenty of specials and all of the regular seafood items you would expect. The staff are outstanding and the restaurant is very clean. There is outside eating, weather permitting. The desserts at this restaurant are over the top.

Ann Powell

I was disappointed with my food yesterday. The crab cake had so many other ingredients I could not taste the crab. Me French fries were not hot, reordered. The prices are so high, you have printed information about sharing a plate and how much another plate with two sides would cost. Been going to this restaurant for many years. Just disappointed.

Sherri Barham

We have been visiting this restaurant for 50 years every summer. It was always my dads favorite so we decided to bring him here to celebrate his 75th birthday. Great food and great memories. ❤️

Debbie INDENCE

Great food loved sitting outside on the water, had to buy a T-shirt

Donald Spight

We did love it But the prices are out of a retired budget. Other than for special occasion.

Robert Carter

Amazing place to eat seafood! Definitely going back!

Teresa Bell

Great service and yummy food! Definitely will come back!

Rebecca Goetz

The food was excellent and tasty. The view while dined outside was beautiful.

Charles Gentry

Sanitary Restaurant only has a sanitary grade of 90! I walked out when I saw that. Never eat anywhere with less than a 93. Trust me!

Jonathan Yates

Solid place for seafood and a great place to have a large party. Reasonable prices for seafood. Rated three stars though because the food seems like "standard" vacation food. Nothing on the menu gave me the "wow" factor.

Megan Carter

Have been going here for years. A wonderful family tradition.

Capt Bill

Service was great, I ordered she crab soup and a crab cake. The soup was mainly bread for filler and the crab cakes were dry and without much crab. I would expect fresher food when a restaurant is also a seafood market. I was extremely disappointed.

Connie Cover

Great food, great service. P.J. was our waiter and he took great care of us.

Jason McKenzie

Atmosphere, people ,food, all well worth it.

John Starrett

Pricey and food was bland. Service was great.

Meg H

My family and I loved our visit to this restaurant. It was, as stated, a clean (AKA sanitary) place! The service was nice and the food was great. I got the catch of the day, bluefish, and it was so good. Plus, the view out the back window was just gorgeous. I would definitely come here again!

Sarah Grace

Service was great! Food was super good! View was amazing. Our server was friendly, helpful and attentive. He was informative about options about the menu. Sweet tea was perfect. It was quiet and nice to have a relaxing lunch with a good view of the water. Food was fast and tasty. We all loved each dish.

Jennifer Hardesty Garner

Best food! Just like my Moma would make...their naked sweet potato and squash casserole is out of this world!

Pippela Pam

Always great food and great service. The views are awesome.

Niki Ashley

The food my family and I received here was very delicious! The staff was attentive and friendly. I placed a take out order but the atmosphere in the restaurant was very nice and laid back. They have a nice little museum like display showing past events with pictures and artifacts. It was very nice to look at and learn about while they was finishing up my order. They are kind of expensive when it comes to their prices for food. But it was worth the extra amount.

Dave Lafontaine

you go here because its famous. you do NOT go here to get great seafood. understand that and you will not be unsatisfied. unfortunately, however, we did have an issue, and what bothered me most was not that the food took an hour, its that the poor, stressed out waitress had NO management support, she was left to deal with us on her own, even when the food came out wrong. so, Ive "been there, done that" I can now go to better seafood places next time in the area, but you should at least go in to the bar, have the fried scallops, they were good, have a drink, and say you were there. :-)

Rick Nobers

Reading reviews you can tell this is a staple and yearly tradition for many. It has been for my family since the 70s up until now. The last go-round is officially our severed ties. And this has been stated aloud. It is always busy and I really believe because of the longevity and history, this is why. The t-shirts, the salt water taffy, among other Sanitary memorabilia can be seen all over the place. The location on the water with wooden patio, the ability to see fishing boats bringing their catch in, etc are about all it is now. Our divorce is because of the downhill in food quality. Regardless of how it is cooked, it is bland, over or undercooked, the fries are terrible, and the once family favorite hush puppies now require too much butter to get through them. Service here has also been inconsistent the past few years. The hosts do a good job of organizing parties, seating the masses, and always have. But the wait staff really has their hands full and perhaps could benefit from more employees etc. Sanitary, you are a cool location. You are historic. You are a great view. But we must face reality and that is you are no longer worth the wait. Your food is not what it was 20 years ago. It just isn't. We can no longer justify any of this anymore. Goodbye to you. We have turned our denials and habit into much needed, spoken aloud admissions. We are relieved to have let you go. Good luck.

Amy Koomen

We go every year during our annual family trip to Emerald Isle. They always have the most fantastic food!

Gregory Hickman

A lot of fried things, but sailing in and staying for the night was excellent.

Shannon Geil

We just had dinner here. It was the most repulsive meal I've ever had. A seafood "market" you'd assume would have fresh seafood. Nope. I've been a chef for 29 years and just paid $170.00 for frozen seafood on the beach. My kids knew it was frozen calamari the second they put it down. Out of 6 of us nobody ate their food. The chef also didn't know what streamed meant and they had tartar sauce aka mayonnaise sitting on the tables in the hot sun. Save your money and go to Wal-Mart's frozen food section and maybe avoid food poisoning.

Nancy Lydell

Great food and great service!

Neuyasha1 .

Great local seafood, local people, great service.

Jan Palmer

Good food. Fast and friendly service. My grandson loves the Hushpuppies!

Renee Howell

Fish was bland tasting. Fried shrimp tasted like chicken. Not going to be going back. Salt water taffy is bar shaped and most of them taste like mint

Debra Harwell-Braun

We eat here every vacation. The steamed shrimp is excellent. Flounder is great. Service is top notch. Love it!

Eleanor Lacy

We lunched here the other day. The waitress was very good. The view was lovely. But it makes me tired that restaurants like this get away with charging more than a few dollars for such terrible food. There are places - institutions- all over the South like this. Maybe they were good decades ago when someone was actually cooking fresh, local seafood and cooking fresh, local vegetables. But Cisco (or something similar) makes all that unnecessary. She brought us hush puppies that had been fried sometime ago and kept barely warm. My “fresh catch” flounder had a bit of an off taste and was not crispy. The fried okra was clearly frozen, pre breaded. The green beans were from a can. My son’s fried shrimp were over cooked. I would be shocked To be told that they were fresh before hitting the fryer. The fries were frozen and flabby. I knew the okra was a risk, but was overwhelmed by how bad they were. I tried to order carefully and was still disappointed and hated having to pay $14 for a plate of barely edible food.

I was a little disappointed. I've been going there since about 1976 and have not been in quite a few years. I thought the hush puppies were overcooked and extremely Bland. The seafood was lightly breaded which was good but the seasoning was missing. They were out of oysters and claimed they were really busy and short-staffed when one entire section of the restaurant that look like it held a hundred people had nobody in it so I don't know if I'll be going back.

Been eating there all my life. Food, service, waterfront views awesome.

The batter for the fried seafood was very bland and tasted as if were unsalted. But the service was great and they let us eat even though we got there 25 minutes before they closed. I got the 5 layer pineapple coconut cake and the layers were fantastic, but the frosting wasn't sweet and tasted almost like it was made with sour cream??

We had an awesome experience with Sam! Great food, really awesome service and an overall fabulous dinner!!

Our server was very nice and tentative. My broiled Seafood plate was terrible. Everything was old tasting and I was afraid to continue eating The Broiled oysters. I hate to complain about anything but I voice my opinion to the waitress and she went and had a talk to management. When I talk to the manager she pretty much left me feeling like that I was just one of those complainers. And there was nothing wrong with the food. But evidently the locals seem to love this place. Update... 10:36pm.. Upset stomache. Belching oysters... Angry.

We eat here every time we are in town. Staff are super friendly. We asked to sit outside and they quickly whisked us to their spacious deck. The breeze was blowing nicely and the view was fantastic. Food was delicious and the waitress was on it. Be prepared to spend minimum $50 for two as the meals are about 20 each. Highly recommend!!

Popular place during high season. Visit off season or plan to wait during peak times.

I have been coming to the Sanitary Market with my family for over 50 years. They always deliver delicious, fresh seafood. The staff is friendly and helpful and never in a hurry to dismiss you. I've enjoyed coming here and I will continue to come here for as long as it's open when I visit North Carolina.

Meh. Clean, nice staff, view was pretty. But the food was just okay, nothing special. My husband's fish was full of bones, fries were cold, and baked potato not very hot. Not going back.

Mary Rogers

The food overall was delicious but the hush puppies were too salty. I will definitely be back but will limit the hush puppy intake.

We took our granddaughters to eat here during a outing in Morehead. Let me start off by saying the waitress was great, and so was the view of the waterfront from our table, but that is were the 1 star came from the hush puppies were dry but we did not complain not everyone has good hush puppies. I ordered the fish taco's which was ok just not much flavor. One granddaughter ordered flounder and French fries, the fish had no flavor and was mushy, she only ate one bite. The other granddaughter ordered shrimp burger with bacon, the shrimp were rubbery & we found a hair stuck to her bacon so we know it happen during the cooking of the bacon. We called the waitress and she offered to take it back but by then her appetite was gone. My husband ordered the grilled chicken sandwich, it was ok to come from a seafood restaurant. The waitress said she had told managment about the hair & when we went to pay they ask how the meal was and we said ok until we found the hair in the shrimp burger. Do you think they acted like they cared not so much as a sorry or a offer to take some off our bill, last time I will ever eat there. So it cost us $60 for a Chicken sandwich ,3 waters and 1 tea & 3 orders of fries which we ate about half. Then another $15 at Bojangles for the grandchildren good food they could eat.

Nice atmosphere, great food, friendly waitress

Gail Pease

The staff was gracious but then again few customers. So disappointed in the food. We shared a fryed 3 shellfish plate...plenty of food for two and crab dip with tortillas. The crab dip was poorly balanced and needed a gracious amount of lemon juice. The chips and fried food should have been salted just out of the fryer and they were not salted at all. Over all the meal was rather one note which affected an otherwise most pleasant experience.

Sean Hykey

They let me PIE MY MOM IN THE FACE!

Edgard Colon

Very slow service. The worse fry flounder I ever had. Not fresh at all, Tasted like fish oil

Sue Whittaker

Way overpriced for the portion sizes and the overall quality. A HUGE disappointment!

Jeff Corbin

Typical fried seafood joint. Not impressed. You would think being where it's located they would be serving fresh local seafood!

Was looking for a seafood restaurant; passing through the parking lot & asked several people for a good place & they pointed to this restaurant. I was not disappointed, the food was amazing, the service was good...and the prices was fair. I recommend this restaurant; & will come back again, the next time I pass through the area. Thank you kindly...Ms. Carol
