Food was mediocre and the atmosphere was pretty dry until a lady started playing the piano. Our servet shorted my change. Although, I don't think it was intentional it shouldn't be happening. The shakes were decent at least. And a little salt on the burgers wouldn't hurt.

The Nutella malted was strikingly good, but not really different in quality from what you'd get at Convention. The rest of my meal was totally unmemorable. I think I got grilled cheese...whatever it was, I would have done better to make it at home. I might go back if I just wanted a malted, but I probably wouldn't opt for a full meal there.

Good old-fashioned American food. Good burgers, fries, standard American salads, chili and a huge variety of malts and shakes. Nice atmosphere with wood panels and interesting old-fashioned booths and vintage photos of the family that owns it. A favorite of my teenage son and his friends.

Malts are great. Burgers and fries are pretty good. The rest is hit or miss. Never tried marinara on an enchilada before now (and hope to never again) but they were kind enough to take it off my bill without me asking. Nice folk. Good lunch specials.

I really liked this place. They have lots of options beyond a typical diner. The food was excellent. I had one of the best Greek salads here I've ever had. All my lovely tablemates were also quite happy with the dishes, malts, shakes and service. They serve wine and beer too. We got there close to closing because of a late bus from Madison and they received us graciously. Thank you!

I got exactly what I wanted. The cheeseburger was thick and delicious. The peanut butter chocolate shake was so thick it was like drinking a candy bar. The cottage fries tasted a little burnt. There are many options other than burgers and shakes on the menu that I would like to try.

Nostalgic (from the 70s I believe) restaurant that serves good burgers, malts and other American food including surprisingly good English fish and chips by the way. The decor and interiors are intact from the way they were close to 50 years ago but it's all part of the cozy authentic appeal I guess. Food is solid, there is usually not much of a wait and it's very kids friendly. There's usually a large overflow crowd from the neighbouring George & Dragon restaurant that comes in here

Stopped by here for a quick bite. 5pm on a Friday night. Really good food. Really good and fast service. The chocolate malts tasted just like Whoppers. As they should. The mint malt was delicious also. Everything’s good. We got 3 different burgers and fries. Great taste all around. I’d gladly come back.

Great staff, amazing shakes and malts at decent prices. $5 for a small. I've had the peanut butter one and a cookie dough one. Both were mixed up perfect! The cookie dough topping was generous and mixed throughout the entire malt.

It was overall a cute place! The food was not so good.. my burger bun was stone cold and the burger was not appealing. At least the fries were good though! They are very messy, the malt container was covered with ice cream, they told me they had “extra napkins” on the table but there was only 4 napkins and we had no silverware. Also the malts were okay but my boyfriends cookie dough malt literally had tons of egg sized cookie dough in it so it wasn’t really a malt. I thought if it’s called The malt shop, they would at least have good, cold, and well blended malts.

This place was a disappointment :/ the whole concept is really cool: food how your grandma made it, the history of the restaurant owners and the old fashioned malts. The design is really cool when you walk in, designed with an indoor patio and cute little storefront. The "storefront" had what looked to be boxes, tshirts and bags in it. It was such a waste of a good opportunity to showcase something really neat. This place would be really cool in uptown with some updates and good food. The real disappointment was the food. We were served an old lemon that had been sitting in a fridge for days - maybe due to lack of business? I always thought it would be hard to mess up a salad but they managed to do that. They were out of the lettuce mix it lists on the menu. Their "house made" Greek vinaigrette was just oil. Not even good oil. It tasted watered down. The little herbs it looks like it had you couldn't taste. They threw chunks/squares of feta on top and it was way too much and not flavorful. We tried their famous melt but it wasn't thick like a malt should be and it didnt taste like they used malt powder. My boyfriend tried their philly steak sandwich that was recommended and it just tasted like cheap ingredients. The food came out quick though... The best thing we ate were the onion rings. I don't think I'll be back.

The food is pretty good and the staff is really nice but this place is dirty and gross and needs some major TLC!! Last time I had a chunk of something in my creamer IDK if it was old and chunky or if it was a dirty cup or what but I won't be back after that. The booths and the whole atmosphere of the place is a dive. They really need to remodel and do a deep cleaning if they are going to stay in business.

It won't "wow" you. Burger is okay, bland. Fries were frozen at some point in their life and you can certainly tell because that's how boring they are. Service was great, wiry prompt refills. It's worth a stop in if you're curious but I wouldn't make a trip out of it.

I actually love this place. Strangest place to think to order a black bean burger yet this was my go-to spot for several years. The ONLY reason I give it 4 stars is that the shakes (esp to go) are ungodly expensive. And even though they are delish, it’s still quite a hefty price tag.

I left a review at Yelp, so I might as well leave one here. I like this place. I had my middle school grad party here long ago, and it's always been a keeper despite the occasional problem. I wish they still did breakfast, but they stopped doing that a while ago. We also miss Mario. Haven't seen him in ages. Anyway, I still like coming here from time to time. The malts are killer, and the food is usually good. Every once in a while, the food has been a tad lacking. But, with that said, that doesn't happen too often. Also, the building is really cool, too. Good thing there's an alley in between it and those buildings that burned down a while ago. Too bad Patina came back. :)

We just love the Malt Shop. I bring my niece Izabella there. The service is always amazing, but of course we ask to sit in Julien's section every time! It's very conveniently located on 50th and Brayant across from Tangletown bikes. We usually pop in for the shakes and malts but today we had lunch and loved it too!!

A staple of Lynnhurst - the burgers are solid and the range of options on the menu let's you basically have a different option for anything you're in the mood for. Don't forget to try their namesake - the malts and shakes. They have some crazy number of flavors and ingredients that can give you over a million different combinations. SUPER family friendly.

The Malt Shop Supreme burger was a fantastic combo with pepperjack cheese on avocado with bacon and mushrooms. And the smoked gouda beer cheese soup was the perfect side. This place comes highly recommended. Family owned, affordably priced, and very kid friendly. Try the malts!

The initial service was pretty rough. There was a significant wait, which is fine - it was the weekend, things get busy. But it was around fifteen minutes before anyone would even acknowledge that I was waiting, despite greeting other parties that arrived after I did. I wasn't hiding off to the side or anything, either; I was standing right up front near the counter, and at least two employees made eye contact, so they did know I was there, they were just choosing not to greet me or take my info. Eventually another customer flat-out said "She's been here a lot longer than us," which was very kind, and they finally talked to me. Once I got seated the food was good. Also, the young woman who waited on me did a great job, she wasn't one of the ones ignoring me out front. Still, the initial experience made me feel small and unwanted, like my existence was a hassle, and it really put a damper on my day.

This restaurant has great vegetarian options and really good milkshakes. It is such a unique little restaurant that has a cool atmosphere! We take all our out of town guests here and everyone loves it! Check this place out, you won’t regret it :)

My wife and I were in town for our 23rd Anniversary and the hotel staff at the W Foshay recommend this spot to us. They told us they had the best shakes and malts in town. The hotel staff was correct. We had dinner and malts and it was all great. Wish we could have had our kids with us for this stop. We will be back.

This is a very nice neighborhood restaurant. Service is excellent, food is usually very good, and even their misses aren't bad. Perhaps the best feature is their huge malt/shake selection, but they've added wine and beer for those who need other chemicals for their happiness. Sometimes have live music, which is another nice feature. Been there many times, good both for a family outing or for a casual meal for a couple.

Good spot. It's a 50's style malt shop/burger joint similar to Convention Grill and Annie's. It's stood the test of time and is consistently good if you're in the mood for a burger and a malt.

It's impossible to rate this place so I averaged the 5 stars it deserves as an old-fashion ice cream shop with great fries, good burgers, and amazing malts and shakes and sundaes, and the 1 star it earns for some of the other entrees we've tried to say nothing of the salads. My wife has had some soup and liked that too. Beyond that though we haven't liked much of the food. I think that's fine, to be honest. I'm happy to keep going there just to have burgers and fries and malts.

Don’t go in the afternoon... they are not to pleased to have to wait on people. The staff was rude when a question was asked related to food allergies (which is an important topic for some), they snapped back and didn’t even answer. Include it took 20 minutes to get the bill. Not a great experience. Supposedly the food was good.

Great place to stop for sandwiches, burgers, deep fried cheese curds (yum) and of course shakes or malts. We went in after visiting the science museum and have a nice leisurely lunch with friends. If you haven't been there before, I'd recommend you give it a try as the staff are polite and friendly!

You know what? I was expecting not to like this place, and I liked it. I came here (as countless hundreds do) because George & the Dragon had their legendary section-of-a-day waiting requirement. Has anyone calculated how much business George & the Dragon has willfully turned away? Well, Malt Shop picks up the slack and then some. I was astounded to discover their burgers were not some high school food service patty, but a quality recipe with fresh ingredients. And in my case, they made the sauce with a beer from a local brewery! Now I'm looking forward to the next time I can go here and explore their menu in earnest. They're right on multiple bus lines, so there's no need to gamble with parking. They have an honorable local beer selection with prompt service and ample seating, and the prices are reasonable for the high quality product you receive.

The food is old school diner, with some newer options. I have had burgers here, that were delicious, and I have had their black bean burger, which is also delicious. The last time we were there, there was a live piano player, who was super sweet to the two five year olds who wanted to play with him.

good, inexpensive food. the servers are always friendly and the french fries are never over cooked. my only complaint is that they don’t have the mango malt every day! the pumpkin malt is also very good, if i’m feeling like having a sweet treat. as a vegetarian, it’s nice to have options here. i always end up getting the black bean burger, which is delicious, but it’s nice to know that other options are available! there is also a really good amount of avocado on the sandwich. a lot of places put barely any on, but there is a fair amount on the burger, which i love!

The waiters and the manager are extremely rude! My friend and I were served bacon and we let them know that we couldn’t have bacon due to religious diet restrictions. The manager came up to our table and told us now they are gonna be 25 dollars behind. My friend and I refused to eat the burgers. Then they told us to get out. Needless to say we our young black Muslim women’s. This place is our diversity friendly and the whole time we were there are waiter barely came to us took over 30 mins to order. Wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone! Such a horrible embarrassing experience. Never have I ever been throw out of a restaurant or public place. Please please please don’t support business like this! I would give negative stars if that was an option.

Had the meatball sub it had three large meatballs which could have been cooked a little more but the hoagie they put it on would look much better with four little bit smaller meatballs aesthetically. wife and daughter ordered hamburger and chicken sandwich they were done way before my meatball sandwich so they were almost done before I got my meal.
