We bought ten serpae tetras to join our existing two. We didn't even quarantine them. We just acclimatized them to the temperature and water, then netted them and added them to the tank. Three weeks later, they are all - including the previous fish - healthy and happy in an active school. There was a bit of fin nipping as they settled down, but they all healed up great from that too. I credit Tropical Lagoon Aquarium for running a top notch operation with healthy fish! The mystery snails we got there are healthy too!

If you aren't paying close attention you can easily mud this place dive the entrance is hiding a little. If they can find a way to get a bigger sign that would be great. Not the cleanest pace but livestock selection is pretty good. Nice coral selection as well.

This store is great. The owner, who is known for his tshirts, pretty much designed my reef tank. Did not charge me a cent for his Insight, just for the hardware. And absolutely everything he told me to do was absolutely right. I have a beautiful 60 gallon that I'm running full time right now and it is all thanks to him. He has an amazing selection of frags as well as other marine and freshwater fish, and he has this ridiculously huge turtle that if you wanted to you could ride, and he has it in the shop as a rescue. What a guy. What a shop. Sometimes, when I am bored, with nothing to do late at night, I will go hang out down there until they close and just hang out with the locals that like to hang out and have a glass of wine with him on Friday nights. (Friday night wine tasting) I wish more stores in the area took note from him. Small business still thrives in dc. And this is one store I am glad still operates the way it does.

I came from Virginia based on the reviews and wasn't disappointed. They have a pretty good selection of freshwater fish, including unique species for nano aquariums. Several months later, all the fish I bought are alive and doing very well! That's more than I can say for a lot of local and big box fish stores. I'll say they're a bit more expensive but the quality and selection of their stock is well worth it. Be aware that the parking area is quite small and difficult to get in and out of.

I have been to many fish stores. Out of all stores, this is my place to get corals. Some frags can be expensive, but not all. I personally go there for bigger corals. As for customer service, I've had no issues. They answer my questions and give me advice. The only time the guys there don't help me immediately is when they are busy with a customer. Overall, when I'm in the market, this is where I go. Here is the picture of a Lobo I bought a few weeks ago from here.

I love this little shop. It's down these stairs, and than they have probably around 80, 20 gallon aquariums. They have a good coral, and saltwater variety, good freshwater, and they have just a huge tourtise, and 2 dogs. Owner is very knowledgeable, and helpful. Only complate is that one of the staff said they were out of stock of a fish, and I found the same species in their store 5 minutes later. That is not a huge deal though, overall loved it.

This is the best stocked saltwater aquarium store I have seen in the capital region. Fish look healthy and everything is very reasonably priced. Owner is extremely helpful and knowledgeable. The parking is on the side of the building so pay attention when coming in. The meter is around 50 cents an hour and 80 cents if you use the phone service. Bottom line is if you want healthy fish for a great price, this place is definitively the place to go.

This is a 4 star review (Upgrades to 5 star) for a small basement local fish store. Hands down this is the best place in the Washington DC area for fish. You might say that there are other larger operations that have more dry goods and new aquariums to buy, but pound for pound tropical lagoon is my first choice. Best in terms of fish health, diversity of species and price. never ever bought a fish that was sick here. They have a wide selection of marine fish, wild large coral pieces, giant clams, small coral frags, inverts and live rock. They have good selection of tropical fish odd ball stuff (arowana, aripima, Alligator gar, rays, knifefish, rare plecos), high quality standards like tiger barbs but they would have Long-fin varieties or a variety you never knew existed in the fish trade. South American and African Cichlids. The have goldfish koi particularly in the summer. Good selection of dry rocks and driftwood at good prices. They do have tanks and filters but I tend to think you must need to custom order to buy a new tank. They do often have old systems and parts super cheap. Food and kit prices are good as online giving me a good excuse to visit every other week. The mystery reptile is often in a tank at the front. They don’t sell reptiles all the time but could have tortoise, panther chameleon, or rosy boa, or something else. Never know. The negative is that the place is in the basement and is pretty crammed. You might be wise to just ask for what you are looking for, that works for me. Related to that you really need to read the labels for the fish species in the tank as they have really nice stuff and it’s not always obvious. For example, they could have a baby fancy variety of Flowerhorns and they would just be labeled “Flowerhorn” mixed in with other Cichlids. Finding the place and parking can be a challenge. Beware the parking meters are well enforced. Btw, clearly 5 star should be reserved for the Asian style aquarium shops with pre-bagged Flowerhorns for $25 and tanks full of black diamond stingrays. Just my opinion. Updating from last review... I just added another star as I just went there a week ago and they had a tank full of black diamond stingray (at least motoro leopoldi and a few other species) and other amazing stuff. I just bought my first stingray. This is now a 5 star review and my ray is so happy in his grow out tank.

Don't be deceived by the single small door on the strip mall store front. A short staircase leads you too a rather long, if a little narrow, stretch of tanks full of fish (saltwater, Freshwater tank, and pond) along with tons of different equipment, substrates, and chemicals. All reasonably priced which can be rare from niche hobby stores these days. But by far the best part about this place is a the friendly demeanor and helpful advice from the store owner and employees. Thus us a really wonderful place to shop. Do know that during the busy hours it can get a little cramped and crowded, but if you go in the morning or during the week you can take as long as you like admiring the fish and not feel like you're in someone's way.

I can't say enough good things about the Tropical Lagoon Aquarium. A little hard to find, just inside the capital beltway on Georgia Ave. and Seminary roads. Park in the little public lot on the corner an it is right there in the middle of the block. The owner is one of the most knowledgeable around, for both fresh and saltwater fish and also snakes and reptiles. They always have a great selection and can get a lot of fish that other stores just don't seem interested in. Prices are great too, they don't over charge.

This place is GREAT! I have been in the Reef hobby for 5 years and of all the shops I have frequented from Frederick on down to Silver Spring this is the only one where I truly felt that the information I was given was unbiased and accurate. Most places try and sell you equipment and supplies because that is what they stock. These guys sell you equipment and supplies that you need. The staff is extremely helpful and very pleasant to deal with. If the person you are talking to can't answer your question they will refer to the person who can or help you figure it out. I saw some reviews of this place that were negative but do not understand how or why. These guys are awesome and I will never go to another fish store. I hardly ever write reviews good or bad but I hate to see any place as good as this get a negative rap.

I frankly don't see the appeal of this place AT ALL. Regardless of selection (and I didn't see anything better or more so than other LFS' including the prices $$$) the condition of a store is indicative of how well the livestock is kept and I simply would NOT buy from here. After being ignored for quite some time I finally had to get in the guy behind the counters face just to ask if they carried Kalkwasser. He said they might have one then proceeded to hand me a Kent Marine jar of it covered in thick dust. When you first walk in there is paint peeling off the walls (from the looks of it it's pre-lead-ban paint too) Then you go down the steps and the day I was there the smell was horrible. Dogs, cats, birds, oh yes and some fish. The two people who were there were rude and just plain ignored me. Stay away from this place...

This is a store and an owner which is and is for the true pet enthusiest, and, cares well for them all. I've seen some reviews of people thinking the place is a bit messy and has other random animals/pets inside the store. However, the owner is very nice, honest, straightforward, not a pushy salesman, but also there to help. The huge well cared for turtle lives in the owners home and yard all year except during winter. And finally, the humidity and not so polished looking sales store (aside form the fish and tanks)..... It is of course, humid for great aquarium's ecosystem... Why this place is great! - competitive - or cheaper than average prices - suggests only what is realistically needed for fish and their needs - if not interested, or disagree, will not be pushy or argue - explains why requirements exist for the fish - and they don't over sell, or over charge - great selection, and great inventory right here in Silver Spring the fact that this place is five minutes from my own home, this is easily my most favorite Aquarium for me, within a 15 mile radius or more :) P.S. I LOVE the Parrot, Tortoise, Kitty, and any other animal.... If i could, I would also bring my family pets to work :) Cheers, and to all who think bad of place, its a pet store, it's quite suiting that a pet lovers pets are coming to work with the family and owner.... It's not a doctors office, or a Spa!!!! lol

Good selection, and all the fish I bought from here have been in excellent health. However, a couple of things have given me cause for concern - I’ve twice been sold mbuna and peacock cichlids to go in the same tank, and unfortunately both times ended in catastrophe for the peacocks. I later found out from cichlid experts that these two species should not be kept together, as the peacocks are relatively peaceful compared with the more aggressive mbunas. Another time, I was clearly told that the fiddler crabs would be fine in fresh water, but this is not the case, as they require brackish water in order to stay healthy. Thankfully I was able to return the fiddler crab, so I hope it ended up in a salty home. As long as you know what you’re doing and do your own research, this is a great place to buy fish.

I came here to buy snake food, not fish, and this place felt really sketchy. I don't know what they do at other stores, but when I bought my frozen mice the lady just reached into a ziploc bag with her bare hands and grabbed some mice, put them in a bag, and rang me up without washing her hands or anything. It's nestled into this weird little mini strip mall that looks really worn down. Just look for the doorway surrounded by clownfish. Parking here is really terrible unless you want to pay the meter $1 to be there for 5 minutes. The prices were reasonable, but I just got a weird feeling there.

My hubby and I love this place. He's been coming here for 10 years since he started his saltwater aquarium. Steve is super knowledgeable and friendly. He's been in business over 40 years and is passionate about fish. He's great about answering questions about what would be appropriate for your set up. He also has freshwater fish, feeder mice, and equipment. Shipments tend to be on Tuesdays, I think.

They are very helpful I bought over thousands of dollars of fish and merchandise from them. But the staff is always unhappy and snappy seems like they don’t like answering questions or want to be bothered so we usually feel uncomfortable asking for help. Congressional aquarium in Rockville, they are very very nice and love to walk you around give you tips and ideas without any attitude. But they have great stuff.

I found this place fairly disturbing. In the back of the store, they had a large tortoise or some sort in an enclosure that was clearly too small for it without food or water. The coral frags were extremely overpriced and the tangs clearly had ick. Will not be returning.

Tropical Lagoon is the best fish store in MD in my opinion. Sure it's a little dirty inside but the owner is one of the nicest people ever and he is by far the most knowledgeable fish person ever. They have great feeder food for your reptiles and amphibians and they also have a great selection of fish (captive bred) for a very good price. I highly recommend it.

I have a saltwater aquarium, so tend to look at that selection. Selection is good, frequently get new fish or other creatures (crabs, snails, corals, etc.); about once/week. Good selection of equipment, parts and supplies to maintain aquarium water and tank. Owner very knowledgeable and helpful. Would recommend this store to anyone who has a saltwater aquarium, and freshwater selection looks good, too. Oh yes: Prices are reasonable, too!

It can be kind of hard to properly care for a fish if you don't even know what it is. I also didn't care for the fact that they were selling tattooed fish.

It's dusty, it's old, it's relatively dingy, and the owner is a bit of a curmudgeon, but they have a great selection, their prices are lower than any other aquarium or pet store in the area - anywhere from 25%-50% less than a place like Congressional, and yes, even lower than chains like Petco - their livestock tend to be healthy (like any aquarium shop, the health of the fish they receive is mostly out of their hands), and they know their stuff. Their aquariums are very clean and I've seen them turn down sales to customers who didn't have the correct setups for the fish they wanted, including some of their more expensive saltwater stock. They've steered me away from purchases that would likely have caused my systems to crash as well. I've been shopping there for about a year and will continue to so long as I need supplies. Update: Years after my initial review, tropical lagoon remains the best aquarium store in the dmv. I had to shut down my systems due to a move and when I got a few up and running again, this store was still my go to for dry goods and livestock. I also wasn't aware that they sell many reptile goods, such as f/t mice and rats at well below the prices of their competitors. Awesome to see that they're still plugging away and fulfilling our aquarium needs.

I just called about Hydra in my shrimp tank. One of the worst things to happen to the tank since its set up. I figured they might not have time to answer silly questions over the phone. To my delight, I received a responsive and respectful answer. I would choose them over my local Petco even though it is not convenient for me. I've never been to the store so I can't comment on that.

I visited this store for the first time over the weekend. The shop isn't nearly as dirty or sketchy as some other reviews would have you think. Is it organized and ordered like a large chain store? No, it's a small and a little cluttered and kind of hot/humid. So what? No one asked you to live down there. The important thing is that all of their fish looked colorful and healthy. Out of all of the tanks that I looked through, I didn't see a single fish that looked sick or one that was dead. The tanks were clean and had a very wide variety of fish. I went in for live plants for a new freshwater tank and they had plenty of healthy-looking specimens to choose from. I'll be coming back to buy fish in the near future.

Staff is patient, as well as, knowledgeable. They gave me solid advise while I was deciding on a fish to buy. Plenty of fresh and saltwater fish to choose from, great coral and live rock as well. The prices and all around "no rush" atmosphere is amazing.

Good selection of saltwater fish, not great, but good. Good selection of coral. Very messy, mom and pop type store. Prices are fairly reasonable. Good selection of koi. Fresh water and goldfish selection are a bit to be desired. Not a huge selection. Great selection of equipment and food. No information on tanks for fish...just name and price. Store manager or owner did not speak when I arrived. Another rep finally asked if I needed help. He was very nice and helpful.

Great place! I recently went here to buy fish supplies are a little expensive but the quality is good! The fish here are treated very nicely I barely see sick fishes or dead fishes I got a fish from there 2 years ago and it’s doing fine!

best fish store around. we drive from VA on the weekends just to check out what they have. the giant turtle is awesome and hard to ignore when he is up on the side of his box near your leg wanting your attention. I'll be back soon for my next arowana. one of the best fish stores we have been too and their tanks look great. especially compared to some of the other local stores we have visited. healthy fish and great selection. their prices are way better than other local shops.

The selection is great and the staff is very knowledgeable about pets and supplies they carry. It could use a better location to calm humidity and make it easier to find. I love that they have the owner's friendly pets roaming around the store too.
