This fish store is not a showroom, but don't let that fool you into thinking you can't find what you need. They have likely the widest selection of used equipment in the state, and at really awesome prices as well. Their coral selection is not as wide as other stores, but their fish stock is quite larhe since they have a rather large location. The employees and Chris are super helpful so don't be afraid to ask for anything.

Maybe they were getting ready to re stock, looked like he was cleaning tanks. Tons of live rock, looked good. Corals ok. Hard to cram that much in such a tight space but they pulled it off.

Went in to just browse after seeing Chris' post on craigslist. The store is packed with merchandise and fish. The aquariums are beautiful. I left with 2 [used] tanks at a more than reasonable price. Chris was incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, kind and generous. He cared about us and even appeased my 11 year old son, asking questions and telling stories. Great place especially if you're in the saltwater scene. Skip craigslist strangers and long drives and come here. It may be a bit crowded in the store but it's worth it. He knows where everything is, and is more than fair on the price. Customer for life. Makes me want to get into saltwater so I can purchase fish here too! This guy is great. Great store. I went just to check it out as something to do on Sunday. I have been passively looking for a tank after recently moving to the area. Ended up seeing a well priced used tank and pretty much bought a whole setup, because the prices were so good.The guys were very knowledgeable, honest, fair, and friendly. It's a solid 45-60 minutes from my house, but will definitely be making this my "local" fish store because I was so impressed.

This place was so terrible that my girlfriend and I were there less than 5 minutes. It was so disgusting in there like it has never been cleaned. It was so cluttered you could barely walk in there. The staff was so unfriendly I said hello and they flat out ignored me. We tried for two days to call them and they never answered so we decided to just go there since we were in the area. While we were there the phone was ringing contantly and the guy behind the just wouldn't answer it. Very unprofessional.

Very disappointed, we were never once spoken to by the staff, not even when we got shoved out of the way of looking at their fish by an employee with no apologies or even an acknowledgement that we were there. Not to mention multiple fish were clearly sick, the freshwater tanks looked to have Ich all over the fish. Decaying shrimp/fish being eaten by other fish. The final straw for us was when we saw the big dead cockroach in the front when we were trying to look at they’re tanks. I am not a competitor and I have nothing against this business, this was just my experience. In response to what the owner has replied, I wrote this review as my honest experience. I do not work at an aquarium store, I actually was really excited to go to your store but the experience was awful. Some advise for you, negative reviews are meant to help the business learn from their mistakes and unhappy customers, not to attack them and accuse them of working for another aquarium store. Not everyone is out to attack you.

Look at what you are getting very well if you are getting corals, some of the tanks had some aptasia, but it's something fairly easy to deal with and wide spread. I'll keep shopping there due to prices, and I've had good luck with my purchases there.

My husband and I have just discovered this place and love it, the staff has always been nothing but nice to us and the prices are amazing. Reading reviews I disagree with everything negative I've seen while the store might be "crowded" I'd hardly call it dirty and all the fish I've seen in there are in clean and spacious tanks compared to places like Aquarium Arts who have fish cramped in tanks with crab/lobster that have shredded the fish and have 20 Dragon goby clumped in a small empty tank. I rather go to a store where the care of the fish is the first priority. I hope this store continues to prosper.

Very knowledgeable staff. As per their name, this is a discount operation where people who don't ever quite get into the aqua sphere can donate all their used aquariums and related fishy paraphernalia. But because of their no frills approach a huge savings gets passed onto you! You can tell by the excellent condition of the salt water fish and especially the corals that are thriving, that these people know their fish keeping. Nothing depresses me more then seeing starving or sick fish in an aquarium and in a place that sells them this should not exist. Here I saw no sign of any ill specimens! I highly recommend this store for both value for your money and great advise!

I have been a customer with Discount Aquariums for a couple of years. I was exceptionally impressed recently when I purchased a 100 gallon aquarium from them. Being disabled it was difficult for me to set it up. Not only did they deliver it to my house but they set it up to all my requested needs. They even did extra painting on the tank and stand to spiff it up even though it was a used purchase. I always appreciate their honesty and willingness to provide excellant customer service and great pricing on new and used products. Their new Tempe location is an aquarium DIY paradise. A1 shop. Recommend them to anyone in the hobby.

This is a shady and illegal business practice and therefore your money would be better (and safer) spent elsewhere.

Honestly I've been to MOST not all, but most, aquarium shops in Arizona. This one is.. okay for used equipment, while their equipment looks like it was never cleaned it's also used so cant really complain too much. Fish & corals are a complete no go for me, lots of dying fish, a clownfish with obvious deformities that they were still selling (by obvious I mean his eye & eye socket was almost the size of his body.) But I gotta say, the guy was helping another guy take a tank out and still nodded and greeted us. But.. husbandry is obviously lacking so they get one star. Sorry.

Pros and cons to this store. When it comes to used aquariums and supplies this store can't be beat. I've bought several items from them and am pleased with the purchase. Reasonable prices and will haggle a little on price. The staff in store were nice every time I've been. However the individual running the responses in this review section is a piece of work accusing individuals who leave bad reviews of working for rival aquarium stores lol. The reason for the 4 star rating comes from the fish themselves. The last few times I went I had no issues with the fish. However this last time was rough I saw several dead Bettas in tanks, one torn in half and wedged into a intake filter. I saw several fish feeding on a small clown knife that had died. And a royal blue Tang with half it's tail missing and some rotten spots. Now I don't know if they took in the Tang that way so that could be excusable and I think the clown knife could be as well. However several of those Bettas had been dead for an extended period of time. If you need supplies or used equipment come here. For stock I would recommend Aquarium Arts or Artistic Aquariums a lot cleaner and nicer stores with less equipment options but way more stock and healthy fish for sale. Response to owner: Whole purpose of a review is to help other people determine if said business can fit their needs/has what they are looking for, and if they can trust the business. My review is to help other people who are looking for Aquarium supplies and livestock. I feel as if your store can contribute to that and is a solid store. However i feel like if they want livestock there are better options, so to help someone in search of livestock I see no problem with that. It could have just been the time I visited last that you had less stock. A while back when you had like 8 canister filters in the freshwater room going with that massive amount of oddball/Cichlid fish for $20 a piece I thought that was really fun and cool. Nice staff that helped me with a part for my filter. Helped me save a few $$ by giving me the part instead of talking me into a whole new filter. Prices on water treatment supplies are great. I can buy a bottle of water conditioner there that lasts me forever at $10.00. Compared to supplies at the big "Pet" chains that are half as big and twice the price. I haven't purchased fish there yet but the tanks always seem clean and the fish seem healthy to me. Have not had a bad experience there yet!

This is a great Saltwater Fish Store. I am always going in to see what used equipment they've gotten in. Chris Kline, the owner, has a lot of knowledge of saltwater fish and reefs. It's not the cleanest of stores but that's because of all the used equipment he goes thru all the time. You won't find a better place to find used equipment.

This place was pretty sad looking. I honestly just think they get old tanks from people, stick the old fish in a random tank and try and resell everything. Not exactly what I thought it would be. I've seen ads for it and being from Glendale, have not had a lot of opportunity to drive out to Tempe. When we finally made the trip I was disappointed. Not necessarily of the selection, though I did imagine the store to be larger, but the service was mostly non-existent. When we did get someone to help they were very unknowledgeable and laxidasical. My wife told me it was because the store was located in a college town. Don't know if this is necessarily why, but something was off.

This place has great deals on supplies and livestock for both freshwater and saltwater. I have bought lots of tank setups from here at great price definitely recommend this store to everyone.

Super knowledgeable . They have a ton of equipment that you can get good discounts because it's been used. They also have a cool selection of corals. Definitely coming back here to get some gear for my saltwater tank. They also have freshwater fish. If you're looking for tanks on discount this is the spot !

Great selection of used equipment, especially when it comes to tanks, filtration, and the likes. Staff is friendly, and very helpful with questions, decent prices, and a huge selection for the size of the store. While I go for the freshwater room (which despite its size carries more variety than PetCo/PetSmart), and the equipment, they seem to have a huge selection of marine stock. Recently purchased some angelfish, and after a week they are healthy and thriving. Will be making this my new go-to store.

I was told black and white babboo sharks came in however after a long trip they were basic brown sharks. I was extremely disappointed. The associate was awesome tho. Shop setup/ cleanliness & organization was So-So at best. HOWEVER fish look and are healthy and safe to bring home. LIVE ROCK IS ACTUALLY ALIVE NOT AQUACULTURED. BIG ++ Thanks guys

Absolutely love this shop. The wife and I have just started our journey into the saltwater aquarium hobby for our sons 3rd bday present and we are thrilled to have found this place. Great prices, healthy fish and amazing employees and owner. We have been to the shop probably 10 plus times in the last 6 weeks or so and the guys are always helpful. I feel like I ask too many questions but none of the guys ever make me feel that way at all. You can tell Chris, owner, and his employees thoroughly enjoy their jobs and love this hobby. The best part is my crazy 3 yr old. He loves to go all over and look at everything and not only do the guys not mind but they actually talk to him and show him stuff. This is and will be our go to store. Would definetly recommend this shop for all your aquarium and reef needs!!!

Was OK, not a clean looking retail store. Tanks with fish not marked correctly. Just not organized. More like a guy's garage that spends more time out in the field working on people's tanks than on the store. Nice and personable though.

I had bad luck looking for a fish store that doesn't sell sick fish! I had two guppies that had ich and my male guppy sadly passed away, my heart was shattered and I was ready to throw in the towel. I did EVERYTHING to save my female guppy and I successfully did. As time went by I was ready to start looking for a fish store. My husband one day looked up fish stores and came home with a male guppy. I was happy and excited! he started describing the store to me and I knew I had to go in for my self to see. THIS PLACE IS AMAZING! I got greeted as I walked in and then my excitement began....I was all over the place looking at ALL their fishes and corals! and was so impressed by how healthy all theses babies look here! The guy who was working there is so nice and helpful and asked me if I needed help with anything. OF course I said I want guppies! He was patient with me while I wanted certain colored guppies from the tank. As I picked my four new babies and purchased them, I saw the tanks at VERY reasonable prices! HANDS DOWN best store I ever been in! literally they have a true customer for life right here, you guys caught my soul and heart! Will return again! Thank you!

Excellent knowledgeable staff!!! Everyone My Husband and I spoke with here is amazing. They really know there stuff. There was a incident yesterday where we brought our tank in to be drilled unbeknownst to any of us, the glass was tempered so it shattered. The staff was nothing beyond excellent. They fixed the issue with a replacement with out hesitation. That just shows the type of staff that is there. They genuinely care about their Customers. They didnt have to do what they did, and we are so grateful for them. Thank you Guys so Much. You Rock!

Discount Aquarium is one of the best LFS in the whole valley. Their prices are unbeatable and so is their passion. They don't have that in genuine feeling where it's all about the sale that most of the store employees at some of the bigger stores give you..... Ocean floor *cough cough*. They're trade in values are also extremely generous. Sometimes I even feel like I'm ripping them off with the amount of credit they've given me in the past. I've been shopping here for years and won't give my money to any other store. Even after they moved across the valley from me.

I have shopped with Chris since they started at their old facility. Chris is a great and honest guy. The staff puts zero pressure on you to buy anything but will explain everything you need to know with a smile, even if you buy nothing. Great place and always got healthy fish from them. When I get back into the hobby they are who I am going to.

I totally understand the good and bad reviews. This place is a real gem in the heart of "plastic-town." If you want a pretty store with regular retail prices, this is not the place for you. If however, you are looking for a no-frills, great place to get friendly advice and much lower prices, this place is great. I agree that the owner can be a bit defensive at times, but that's because he takes great pride in his shop. The place might look a little dirty, but it's not! If you look closely, it's actually very well cared for. If you visit, have a little patience as someone will get to you and give you the same undivided attention the person before you is receiving. I recently bought a test kit, new aquarium starter bacteria, and 5 fish. All for under $200! A month later, my tank is balanced (nitrate=0, nitrites=0, ammonia=0) and my fish are all healthy. Happy customer.
