REVIEWS OF The Fish Market - Southside IN Alabama

Marshall Mooney

This is a great restaurant. The food and service are great. The prices are not high. I recommend it.

Jerry Cobbs

Delicious as always. I'm not a seafood eater, but the alligator sausage and chicken was amazing.

Larry Wigal

Great fresh seafood. Broiled seafood platter was very good.

Adam Alkishawi

My 3 star review is based solely on the entree I ordered, everything else about this place was great, loved the settings and the waitress was awesome, they do have an actual fish market next to the dining area, selling fresh seafood so if the smell of fresh seafood bothers you then this place is not for you, let's move on to the entree I ordered, I ordered from George's Favorites, I got the George's Seafood Pastichio, it sounded better on paper than it did in real life, first of all it says it has “lots of seafood" now I understand that Seafood could only mean “shrimp" which would have been fine by me to have “lots" of it but the only thing I got “lots" of was damn Cheese, yes it did say it had Parmesan, Panko and mozzarella but I didn't expect it to be %70 cheese, %25 fettuccine and %5 seafood which in this case was a penny-size shrimp and I'm not joking when I say that that huge plate that literally had 3 adult servings had 15 penny-size shrimp, I'm not a fan of any entree that literally covers everything in cheese, there probably was a pound of melted cheese on this plate and barely any “seafood". This was my first time and I'm definitely going to go there again soon and try something else, this is just my initial thought on this place and I always give restaurant a second chance so I want to make it clear that this review is strictly about my entree and not the whole place in general, I think you should go there and enjoy the atmosphere and food, just don't order that entree unless you like a pound of melted cheese with a few shrimps scattered in it.

I really love the Fish Market on the Southside. Centrally located for friends to meet up and enjoy the food, drinks and each other.

Rickey Dorsey

Mr.Willie Dixion is a excellent server. That why we come by from UAB for lunch.

Samantha Casrill

It's too bad that I have to give them a star to leave a review. This was the worst dining experience I've had in a long time. The fish tasted like it had started to turn, so they just over seasoned it. The side vegetable dish was so overcooked that it had no color left and turned to mush. We ordered a "Greek" salad, but were told that adding feta was an additional charge. Well, my friend, then that's just a salad. Nothing Greek about it. When we asked to see the manager and voice our complaints, she was rude and said that that's how they serve their food. She made no effort to correct the issues, comp any items, or even offer a free dessert. Poor management, bad fish, and overcooked vegetables. Will not waste my money here again.

Carla Threats

Always able to get a good meal from the Fish Market. Food tastes the same whenever I want it.

Philip Horvath

Always good food and service.

Jessica Sabouh

Amazing food! This place has a really different vibe and atmosphere. It does have limited parking for how busy it is but it will not disappoint.

Lawrence Cole

Food was good. Service could improve.

Courtney Bodiford

I was in town for the weekend and had to stop by one of my favorite places in the city. Went for dinner but the portions were very small. I remember being able to eat off a plate for lunch and dinner. Very little fish on plate.

donzell brown

Love it. Server was amazing. The sampler appetizer will not disappoint. The alligator sausage is inexplicably good. All entrees were delicious as well. Wonderful experience.

J.D.T Parker

Every visit is awesome!! Our food was amazing and our server April did a super job. So many delicious dishes to choose from but my 2 favorite, is Shrimp & Chickpeas with spinach 2nd Shrimp & Grits.

Beverly Andrews

Both my boys enjoyed it, my husband said it was good not great for the money. I was disappointed. I ordered no onions and found something in my order was made with onions so I had a strong onion taste and I found many little onions. I was unable to eat my food. The waiter was very nice and helpful in the beginning but never came back for me to ask for something different so ended up paying a lot of money and stopping to get food in the way home.

Michelle Spann

I’ve had good experiences here in the past. My mom requested I take her here for Mother’s Day. Her food came out cold, and when we sent the food back the manager made no apologies or offers to make it right. Most of the members of our party were disappointed in their food. I doubt we will be returning.

Melvin Hill

I buy fresh fish there,it is good. They can go down a little on the price of there fresh fish.

Areial leavy

Great food. Terrible service. Great food. TERRIBLE service. The ppl over the raw section is A1. They’re on point. The restaurant, WHEW CHILD!!! Lazy service, and I’m a former waitress OKAY?!. Sadly My ppl are rude as hell. We sat ourselves. Served ourselves (got our own food from the window when our buzzer went off) first time visitors. After we placed our order, the cashier told us to give our buzzer to a server in either all black or a fish market shirt. We followed her instructions (surprisingly comprehended through her full mouth of food and smacking) but we were stopped. “No, you don’t give us that, you hold it until your food is ready” we’re like...”okaaayyyy” buzzer goes off (as we are refilling our own drinks) and some random guy (assumed worker) says “hey, go get your food from the window”. I didn’t know they had servers until we saw a white family being served (orders being taken behind us). Maybe they assumed we weren’t going to tip because of our age so they didn’t take care of us. I have NO IDEA why my husband left a tip anyway. I mean I was literally confused. They only thing they did was stare at us and mingle amongst each other.

Never work here Ghetto Ratchet Atmosphere! Cashiers curse in front of guest/sit down while people are standing to be checked out/gossip about everybody’s business/run off new employees it’s just not a place you would wanna work TRUST ME!!!! Very rude people work here....everybody’s got an attitude like they hate life or something it’s a really sad and very negative place. Wish someone would have warned me ahead of time! O yea I did have some people that work there tell me if I could find another job I better take that because you won’t like it here. NEEDLESS TO SAY THEY WERE RIGHT‼️‼️‼️

Bill Woods

Excellent. We went before the evening rush about 3:30 and were seated right away with at a table with excellent views. Food came out quickly. Food was well prepared, hot and fresh . Everyone is not okra fans but theirs is the best I have had since my momma has made it. Only mentionable issue is parking, even with an empty restuarant the lot seemed full. I could imagine not finding a park during the dinner rush.

Lee Moore

Always good. Eclectic crowd, unique experience. A quintessential Bham restaurant. Lately the regular slaw is a flavorless mush. Somebody trying to reinvent the wheel, or a saboteur from Red Lobster....

Hayden Hilt

They have large selection of food on their menu. I ordered the shrimp and grits and it was awesome.

Ernestine Ray

Great place to eat and dine. I love this place

Mike McAlister

Very well prepared seafood. Grouper Mediterranean was delicious. Fast courteous service.

Darla Russell

Worst meal I have had there in years. I had the grilled seafood platter. Oysters were so tiny and rubbery. Never had my drink freshened. So sorry that had a bad experience because I had enjoyed dining here. Will not return.

Milton King

The service was very good and the atmosphere is awesome.

Barb Evenson

Food is great. I had snapper plaki -- super. My dinner mate had grilled scallops, also excellent. My side salad was fresh and crispy -- his Caesar looked good. And for dessert, creme brulee with whipped cream and blueberries. Yummy custard, sugar crust and two spoons.

Marcos Bittencourt

Great food with really fresh taste and awesome atmosphere. Loved the charbroiled oysters Dino and the Greek potato.

Will Lamb

The service is immaculate, April at the bar was very sweet and attentive, made me feel at home. I'd been here about 4 years ago and the cioppino brought me back while I was in town.

janis porter

Great scallops and field peas, onions added on the side.

Katherine McGraw

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!! Beware !! We have been here for 3 hrs , 3 hrs !! Still haven’t got our checks . We had a reservation . I made it 2 days in advance .They called me two days in a row , asking me Different questions , how many checks , ?? How many people ? Could we not just do casual instead of Full service ! It’s supposed to be a birthday dinner ? If I wanted to order at the counter , we would have went to Burger King .Anyway . My husband had to get half of our party their drinks . Our waiter/ waitress couldn’t get it . Their system went down , couldn’t take our orders , until like 30 minutes . But it doesn’t Matter , my husband and I came before and it still took forever , without a system breakdown . SALMON tastes like flour , hush puppies were hot on outside , cold on the inside . Most food was Lukewarm , Even had the manager come to take orders and it still was not right had to send several things back ! I just can’t say enough . One of the most exhausting dining experiences I have ever had . Please don’t waste your time . You will regret it . This location is horrible !

Dane Rhodes

They've got a cool guy here that makes The BEST SWEET TEA IN the SOUTH! *Shout Out!! The food was EXCELLENT too; and the service second to none! It was a Fantastic Dining Experience. I was there for our son's wedding rehersal dinner and they did an excellent job with such a large party. We couldn't have asked for a better venue! Highly recommended

Angela K Jones

Food was delicious. April, our Server, was the best. She was very patient and ensure we had everything we needed to enjoy our meal and dinning dining experience.

Bobby Stevens

Great food friendly service

Pamela Martin

The food is always perfectly prepared. We like the Greek ambience. Blake, our server, was very attentive and did an excellent job.

retta holifield

Great food very satisfying but also pricey

B A Buckland

Excellent food and reasonably priced. Update 9-11-19. Food is still fabulous. Had Grilled Snapper, John's slaw and Greek potatoes. Ate every bite! It was packaged well and was still hot after a short trip to the Elyton area. Wish I could eat here more often. When I can eat in I always start with some raw Appalachicola oyster on the half shell. I enjoy making my own horseradish sauce for the oysters. You can't go wrong eating here.

Teresa Berry

Parking is great. I like to order whole catfish I usually do this about every month and are usually get about six of them The Price is Right the service is great! Today I and I'm taking the time to inform you of the new prices on catfish at the fish market. Catfish per pound is about $5.45. About 3 months ago catfish was about 2.99 per lb So now catfish I will buy about three times a year. At least wait until the price goes down so I will call before I go to get the price on whole catfish per pound.

Aaradhana Jha

The ambience is great! Their sauteed crab claws is out of this world!

Connie Hodges

Awesome place, good food, good choices. Loved the atmosphere everyone is so friendly and happy great experience!! Cory was our server and was just great. Highly recommend good prices too

J.R. Dandy

This place has some superb dishes with very professional staff. The food was scrumptious and memorable. I would say the cost is slightly pricey, but worth every penny. I certainly recommend to those who enjoy quality seafood.

Ogads Way

Good flavor...fast service ....descent prices

Matthew Bellisario

Went to dinner on Friday, spent 60 bucks on an OK meal. Left around 9 took a walk downtown, came back at 11PM and my car was gone. The ingrates had it towed. I paid to eat there and they towed my car. I had to walk and pay 165 bucks to get it back. No signs saying that at a certain time they would tow your car. When I came back there were still people in the restaurant. I called and left a message, no return call. That's how much they appreciate your business. I will never step foot on their property again. I am glad that the spot was worth 165 bucks to them, because myself and a lot of people i know are never going to eat there again. It will cost them more than 165 bucks.

Michael Garrett

Great place, a real Birmingham tradition. The seafood is fresh and seasoned wonderfully. They a variety of ways to have the fish prepared and the shellfish as well. The service was quick and outstanding, it usually is. They also offer a few months seafood items, which is nice.

Paige Turner

Delicious food, friendly staff and a large selection on the menu. The service was a little slow and that's the only reason I rated four stars instead of five

Greg Davis

Firehouse Restuarant, good as usual. They really know how to fry!!

Marcelo Gouveia

Went with two other friends, one ordered a paella, the other got some fried fish... I got the shrimp salad. WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T GET THE SHRIMP SALAD!!!

Yolande Jones

Grilled fish too greasy! Should have real butter for bread instead of whipped spread. Otherwise, atmosphere great!

Katelyn McDonald

We won’t be rushing back. The hostess did not even speak when we walked in. All she did was stare at us and wait for us to say how many were in our party. It took the waiter 20+ minutes to come to the table to take a drink order. Every time he came, he had an excuse of why it took so long even though the restaurant was next to empty. Upon bringing our salads, 2/3 were incorrect. There was ,of course, an excuse given for it, even though it was as simple as not listening to our order. We waited almost an hour on food, when again, the restaurant was next to empty. The food was subpar, not worth the wait, and not worth the money.

Michael Vaughn

Very disappointed. Service was fantastic and very friendly. The food had no flavor. Salad dressing came in plastic cups with lids. Fried green tomatoes were very pain. Just breaded in unseasoned corn meal and served with ranch dressing, again in plastic to-go containers. It was like having fast food fish with no flavor. And THIS was AFTER we asked for the Cajun seasoning.

Belinda Hopson-Dupree

The waitress was excellent! The food is bland. The food need more spices and seasoning along with being hot. The food was lukewarm. So much potential but lack of enthusiasm.

Terry Pegues

Great afternoon with delicious food. Workers were all nice. Again made my day with my daughter fantastic.

Marc Schaefer

Great seafood at reasonable prices. Enjoyed appetizers and main course with Mediterranean feel and flavor with great service.

brightchance1

The food is very good, usually a little wait for a table but I always considered that a plus. Service is fair, prices are not to bad either. A very unique atmosphere.

Victor Goon

Ambience was great! For the most part food was great! Fresh lobster was a little tough..

Zhaleh McCullers

Great food with reasonable price. Fun atmosphere

Erica Hawkins

As usual, my dad and I had a delicious lunch at The Fish Market. We shared a large platter of Dino’s baked oysters, and oh my!! They are just as delicious as I’ve heard. My dad had fried trout, which was cooked perfectly and delicious. I had the grilled shrimp with vegetables on the side. This is our go to restaurant for lunch when we’re anywhere close. The service is impeccable and the food has always been fresh and cooked perfectly.

Kenneth White

Great food and great atmosphere

Curtis Hall

The Best seafood this side of the

EastAlabamaMedia

In a word: "totally awesome." Okay, so that's two words. Started with the delicious clam chowder, followed by grilled red snapper and scallops, all of which was every bit as tasty as someone told me I could expect. It was my first visit, but it will now be a "must visit" during trips to Birmingham.

A. Hollis

Would be nice if you were told to ask for seasoning on your fish or at least give you the options. Found this out later from a friend.

Litha P

Friendly staff and good food

Rodney Baker

The service was excellent. I had a shrimp po boy sandwich and it was enormous in size. The atmosphere is nice, the staff was nice, and I enjoyed the food as did the others who were with me. It's not the cheapest place to eat but it's definitely not the most expensive place to eat I would say the food is well worth the price.

Zach Lee

Like this place. I did get to see much of this place we were sat in side room. The staff was attentive but a little to quick to ask about our order. We explained it was my first time at the restaurant. So make sure you ask every 30 seconds if I'm ready to order. We had the calamari with shrimp tacos and the platter. The calamari was delicious. Perfectly cooked not rubbery or too chewy. The shrimp he is wet okay the hot pickle cabbage was unusual but good . the platter was cook perfect. But all I could test was lemon. I found out that they coat every thing in lemon butter.i was not a fan but it was my first time. I will come back to this place.

Derrick Foster

Food and drinks was good..but no crab claws.

KD Nowicki

The Fish Market was recommended to me by an experienced Lyft driver so after I double checked the TripAdvisor reviews I decided to walk on over from my hotel on birmingham. I went by myself on a Thursday night around 730pm in September. There were several open spots on the parking lot I walked through. There were also plenty of open seats. It looked like it would be fairly easy to seat a large group. I was alone so I sat at the oyster bar. I was promptly served water and my order taken shortly after I decided on a glass of reisling and the paella. The paella comes with two sides or a salad. When I was asked which sides I wanted I requested the salad. The server them confirmed I was okay with a Greek salad. my wine was poured for me promptly and my paella also came out in a timely manner. The overall flavor was a little inderwhelming. The rice seemed a bit overdone. The mussels and chicken were cooked well, but the andouille sausage and shrimp were also overdone. I actually only had one piece of sausage in my portion. I did appreciate that the tails were taken off the shrimp. When I was brought my check I pointed out o was charged for extra feta. I was informed that although it says extra on the bill I was really just charged for feta since any feta is extra. I them informed the server that I never asked for feta (in fact I don't even really like it) and was never offered to have or not have feta. The server, who was not the one who took my order, made a face and then moved on to doing another task as I awkwardly held my bill and credit card. A minute or two later she came back and said she could talk to the other server. He came over and he gave me the same message about the feta. I again said that we never discussed feta, but yet I was given feta. I said I would be willing to pay the extra, but that they should be more clear with patrons in the future and not charge people for stuff they didn't even order. I am disappointed on how this was handled. No apology was made; it was a very silly matter that left a sour taste in my mouth.

Bill K

The food wasn’t that great for the price I paid or the service they could of done much better

Anita Parker

The food we have ordered was pretty good, have no complaints. I do have one thing to say about John's coleslaw, it's nothing but raw cabbage. We were very surprised it's not mentioned what it really is. Do not recommend to get that though. unless you order a lot of fried food.

sean lewis

Service was excellent! I had the cajun chicken Alfredo and it was stellar! Value for money is fantastic! Huge portions. Highly recommended!

Mary McKenzie

This is the original location and it's the best of all the ones they have opened up over the years. I've enjoyed the food since I was a child.

MD Yasser Karim

Great food. Service is little bit slow. Will definitely go again.

David Cohen

Consistently great food and service. Food comes out promptly and you can tell the entire staff is experienced and knows their job well. I love the ambiance. It's an old industrial /warehouse with exposed brick and tall ceilings. Never had a bad meal here!

La Portia Oliver

Very very nice place to eat. The atmosphere was great. The food was out of this world. I had the salmon dip fried green tomatoes Alfredo pasta and red shaper salmon patty and fried okra there was a group of 6

Terra Glover

Love the food 1 time service was GREAT!! 2 time service wasnt so good!! Food good!

Robert L Smith Jr

Enjoyed the unique tasting broccoli! The Red Snapper was good, and the service was great!

Carla Davis

Molly was the absolute best server ever this afternoon! She made my mom's 70th birthday party special!!! Thankyou! We will.be back.

Leah Moseley Papp

Overall I've had a very good experience eating at the Fish Market. The food's great. The only downside I have ever experienced is the service can be a little slow during lunch at the Southside local. Just plan for a little extra time if you go; the food is definitely worth it.

Cortney Walton

Great service and great food

Dom S

Service at bar was great, grilled octopus delicious, as were raw oysters (all three types). Orange Ruffie tasted like vinegar and was not edible (no, it wasn’t the lemon and butter sauce, the fish smelled like feet and tasted like vinegar). Not a bad place overall, just be prepared to not eat an entree if you order this dish. When I asked them to take the fish away, they said they would talk to a manager (I’m assuming to get feedback since I had said already I’d just pay for it but didn’t want it). The manager never arrived but we saw her.

Freddy Love

Delicious catfish and shrimp. The collard greens were canned but the food and service was great. Add mac n cheese to the menu and that would be awsome.

Paul Durden

First visit, but not our last. I had the Amberjack po boy. The fish was well seasoned, and the slaw was awesome. We found this place between appointments, and we will definitely be back again.

Sabrina Rabl Tidwell

Great food, but a little pricey for me... But still good.

John Ramer

Excellent food and our waitress, Carla was most Charming!

matt avery

The food was very good. The service was adequate. The icing on the cake for me was the sufficiently sized parking lot, which is a rare occurrence for most downtown restaurants.

Sha HarrisBrown

Great Food, Loved It! The Have The Best Oysters &Hush Puppies.

Shawn Ford

This is the best seafood restaurant in the city. I doubt if it gets any better than this. The food is always made to order and the is average not too long. However, they need to expand because they are so good parking is bad you may have to drive around a while before finding a parking space unless you come early between 11 and 1130. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Nicole Hill

Overall, my coworkers & I enjoyed our meals. There were a few problems. I had a shrimp poboy that did not come out with the other plates. I think it was put in incorrectly by the server. He was very apologetic and sincere. One colleague had shrimp pasta and she absolutely loved it but the greens were cold. The server replaced them immediately. My other friend had grilled shrimp and she raved about how delicious they were and the sauce...she couldn't get enough of it. I had the fried shrimp poboy. It was delicious but I noticed some of the shrimp were not cleaned properly. I had to remove black lines from several backs of the shrimp. The best part of the meal was how friendly, professional, courteous, and pleasant our server was. He was the best!

Shayla Johnson

Food was excellent. Got seated promptly. Very nice young man that served us. Parking can be a chore.

Gary McCall

Use to be the best seafood restaurant in Birmingham but the quality of food sucks. The catfish tasted spoil last night. The old little waitress lady is slow but has great customer service

Cheryl Henry- Boyd

Their food is always good. The fish is amazing.

Lillian Heflin

Good service, good food

Jack Capps

This is the best seafood you will find. I eat oysters every time I go. The owner is one of the best men you would ever meet . I have been eating there for over 20 years. Try it you will like it.

April Nicole Scipio

Great food and great service. Prices are reasonable and the portion are good. I will definitely come back. I ordered the Salmon over rice. Super yummy!

Kathryn Blevins

Great food and atmosphere. Jazz musicians live. You can eat there and buy fresh seafood to take home

delphine rowe

I've been going to the Fish Market for several years. We Always had good service but today, the service was terrible. We had to wait almost 2 hours to get our meal. The server was really nice. The hostee at the entry was unprofessional because she didn't tell them we had a party of 9. We had to sit for about 30 minutes before a server was sent. Today is my birthday and the service was awful

Christopher B

I'm guessing they were short staffed this day. The waiter we had was terrible. He would be gone for 20mins at a time. We were there for at least 15mins for our waiter to greet us. After we got our food and ate let's say 45mins later he finally returns with apologies and what not and we ask him for to go boxes and the check. We had to get the to go boxes ourselves and also had to almost leave before we were able to pay our tab. Horrible experience. My food wasn't that great but my wife's food was good. Only reason I'm not giving 1star rating.

Phoenyx

Fresh fish and many options both in cooking and fish. Really great food and airy space to sit and enjoy your meal.

Ronald Otis Lee

This place is too well known for my review to matter but I'm posting anyway. First of all the lady taking your order is running her month to another man and takes her damn time for your orders. We weren't the only customers she did this to. The staff here is very rude to customers. If you look at my profile picture yes, you'll see me as an old guy in his power wheelchair but this old fart has been there, done that. I don't get paid to lie nor has anyone paid me to write this review or all I've written to other places. I do this because it's the truth. Today me and my wife went here for dinner around 4:00 P.M. This has happen to us three times before and we thought we'd give the owner George another chance to improve service and staff. For $19.?? {Might as well say $20.00} we ordered 12 fried shrimp with 2 veg. No drinks. Now 12 shrimp is really 6 shrimp because George is smart. If you've been there and ordered shrimp you should have noticed that those shrimp were split in half so his customers are getting cheated. 12 = 6. 6=3 shrimp. Not a full shrimp The side orders you receive maybe 4 or 5 spoons in your mouth, no full servings. With our meal today and the high price it didn't count any drinks other than a glass of water. 12 split shrimp (Half shrimp) = 6 shrimp and 2 sides for $19.??. And the shrimp were very soft with no taste. George changed his menus about 1 or 2 years ago. Before, his servings and prices along with taste were wonderful but I guess like all other eating places he got greedy and cut back but raised prices along with low grade taste and servings amount. He's not going out of business because of my review but everything I've wrote here is the truth. I know it is, George knows it is and more important our true and living God knows it's true. So, All you fools keep going to The Fish Market. As long as people keep supporting this place it's never going to improve.

Lance Huffstutler

I’ve eaten here three separate times and it always comes out the same. The fish is warm at best, and has a very fishy taste like its old, the sides are usually dry and not seasoned well or the come out drenched in oil. Not sure why this place is popular when captain D’s has more taste

Joey P

A wonderful pastime turned sour over the years. Brought my mother for her birthday again today and were met again with lackluster service and overcooked food. Dry fish and non-fresh tasteless vegetables, yuck. After 25 years of patronage it's sad to say we cannot forsee returning. Good fish will be missed!

Beverley Mattocks

Not a bad seafood place in the middle of the country. Good variety.

Michael Peebles

The food is best in Birmingham and its the best restaurant in Birmingham. The reason I only give 4 stars, however, is because my wife and I go there once a week, and every trip we have to consistently wait on the cashier to finish her conversation or get off her phone before we can order, sometimes to the point of just walking away. Normally, no big deal, but worth noting for such a great restaurant. We are regular visitors and its like she is saying "we don't want your money" and I frequently see other customers who are frustrated of waiting on her to get done chatting with another employee or get done typing on her phone. I hate to see one employee take down an otherwise perfect restaurant.

Shante Haywood

I love The Fish Market and the service recieved there.

Angela Mccoy

I love this seafood restaurant. There are so many things on the menu! From the outside it looks like a storage warehouse but once you're inside, it is so nautical and open. They have fresh seafood and food merchandise you can purchase, P.S. they have the BEST crawfish boil sold here! The White Trash Boil!

Guy Harris

The food is always good and they give you plenty.

Abigail Hays

Had the whole grilled sea bass and a couple of sides. Fresh and flavorful. Great drink prices. Charbroiled oysters were amazing.

Michelle Davis

This was my first visit. We went to the self service side, but still had wonderful staff there helping us, bringing us our food, and following up to check on us. The food was amazing, atmosphere was comfortable and relaxed, and the service was amazing. Loved it!

Christina Cherry

Food and service was great. Whatever you order fried be sure to tell your server how you want it seasoned or it will come out unseasoned. Serving sizes were huge. If I return to Birmingham I'll definately visit again.

John Dicke

Our food was below average for the price. The oysters on my po-boy we're tough and chewey. At least we had good service....

Robert Moore

I eat here weekly. The venue is an old warehouse. The food is excellent but not fancy. The price is low for the quality. The seafood is fresh from the Gulf - there are two trucks that alternate daily. The staff is very friendly and helpful. You have the option of full waiter service or serve yourself.

Angie Reese

The server looked over us the entire time! One of our plates came out cold and they refried the same food twice, one plate looked like it had been sitting for way to long but the manager was very reasonable she handled the situation very professionally!

Kescheler Nix-Powell

I’m currently writing this review from the restaurant so you understand how inconsiderate and honestly just bad the food is. Came for a birthday party and ordered the shrimp scampi. Honestly, the food is nothing to brag about. The large noodles tasted bland and the “fresh baked” bread came out hard and had obviously been sitting out for a while. Still, I wished to give the restaurant a chance. After voicing a concern to the waiter, a manager (I assume) came over and asked what the problem with the food was. After I explained to her my dissatisfaction, and asked if there was another item that I could substitute. She rudely stated that they had never heard that complaint before (which is irrelevant as I was explaining MY experience with their lackluster “recipe”) and that she would not allow me to substitute, nor would she remove the item from the bill. However I could purchase another menu item for half price. Customer service from management is lacking. Food seems like it has potential but is never realized. The best thing, at most is that the seafood is fresh and the wait staff is nice.

Thomas Rolen

Great food, great prices, attentive staff

Charstina Benion

The food was horrible i voiced my concern with the owner he was very rude . Customer services at its worse.

JoAnne Burl

My absolute favorite restaurant, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the shrimp and grits!

Sandra Hardy

The service was great, but the food was just OK. The flavor was kind of bland and I thought the prices are high for what you get. I've been here a few times before and have always felt the same way. I went again yesterday because my husband likes this place and wanted to go. I was hoping they had gotten better, but that was not the case. If I'm going out to eat and spend good money, the food has to be good and flavorful. The service was great, though!

Prices have gone up, but the quality seems to have gotten better. I find myself here at least twice a month. Best non-fine dining seafood spot in Birmingham.

Always a fantastic meal. Have never been disappointed

Stay home. We are not picky eaters, however we do love seafood and love to dine with friends. Our guests were polite however they and my wife pushed their separate orders of oysters, fried grouper and warm peel and eat shrimp away. One order of grouper required a steak knife, the other was 50% raw. My wife's shrimp was mushy and flavorless. My Greek salad was fine. Our guests arrived before us and ordered two martinis at the bar. After 25 minutes they hadn't arrived. They reordered the same drinks twice after being seated. Still no drinks. We paid our $110 +bill and left. We did have a wonderful time with our friends though .

I Always love their fried trout Almondine. It is excellent!! The server was very good, friendly and efficient too. It was Very crowded, I think because It was the day before Fathers Day. We had to wait a little to order, but not really too long, as we needed the Time to look at the menus and decide what we wanted. My food could have been browned a little longer, but that's just my preference. Also, I think it may have been due to the crowd that was there. I couldn't believe how many people were there. We didn't have to wait but a minute for a table so that wasn't a problem at all. They all kept apologizing for the wait, but it really wasn't but a few minutes. Thank you, Fish Market, SouthSide, for a wonderful meal and an enjoyable dinner experience! Oh, and the pecan pie, I had to bring home to finish eating, was so delicious!!

I LOVE THEIR FOOD AND SERVICE

I had the Platter fried and Calamari as an appetizer and there was NO SEASONING at all. What is fried food without a little seasoning salt? Tasteless. When my hubby and I came with a group it was tasteless again . We had to drown our food with salt. The food was fresh but lacked the true essence of what you would expect from great seafood. Please add seasong.

Phillip Zealy

Seafood was definitely fresh and better than average and the wait staff was very attentive

Darrell Jones

Server spilled food twice then charged me dinner price for a lunch menu item..the paella was old and dried out with a misuse of saffron

We stopped by here to eat a late lunch after a disability hearing for my young minor child. My child surprisingly ended up getting emotional during the hearing so I thought I’d treat her to something special as she loves shrimp. We had the sweetest elderly lady as our server. My child stated that she reminded her of her grandmother and so smitten by her. She told everyone about her experience with this server. Something that has never done before. I too was very pleased by the server as well and she is one of the best servers I have had in a long time. I wanted to catch the owner or manager to praise the server & how she impacted my child after an emotional experience. Unfortunately we were limited on time as we had to head back south to pick up baby brother. I hope they see this and this particular employee is recognized and cherish. The food was great too, I had the blackened mahi mahi and my child had the popcorn shrimp and she was vocal on how good it was.

Fish Market food was good but the service was a little bit slow

McDonald’s has better customer service. On the evening of April 1st during a quick vacation to Birmingham, I drove 30 minutes to this restaurant because of such great reviews from the locals. When I arrived, we were quickly seated. We waited for fifteen minutes for someone to take drink orders. Other patrons of the establishment were quickly greeted by a server. Each of these customers arrived after us and were greeted by a server. When I respectfully asked if someone was working the table, a young man arrived and acted like he did not want to serve us. I order the buffalo popcorn shrimp. When they arrived, I thought it was side of macaroni and cheese. They appeared briefly cooked and tasted horrible and was drenched with a sauce. When I advised the waiter, he arrived back with the manager. I respectfully requested asked could I just get a replacement of basic plain popcorn shrimp, she refused. I am one who has never complained about food at a restaurant. I was totally shocked at the manager’s unprofessional attitude and unwilling to correct the order with just basic popcorn shrimp. She stated, “Nothing Could Be Done After They Had Been Cooked.” I never asked for anything, just a replacement. I have received better customer service at McDonalds....

Great food at affordable prices for lunch. Loved the Creole shrimp. Food is presented very well and tastes great. While the iron is kind of hidden, is call it a hidden gem.

Ive been a customer for over 25 years, and i cannot recall ever having a bad meal. The Fish Market is a Birmingham tradition! A must stop! Today i had the Crawfish Ettoufee, dont think its on the menu, but you have to try it!

Brenna Terry

Wow! I cannot believe I have lived in BHM for 7 years and just had this place for the first time last weekend! Imagine Greek-meets-Southern comfort food. I had the trout- for the price, you receive generous portions of tasty fish, hush puppies, and two sides. The black eyed peas were some of the tastiest I've ever had- their seasoning is magical. It got crowded (Saturday PM), but our waitress was friendly and attentive. Will be back for sure!

The Fish Market in downtown Birmingham was very good. I had the paella and thought it was excellent. There was live music which was also very good. If you've never been to this location I must say it's kind of hard to find. The main entrance does not face the street nor does the sign. Even though I was using my Google maps navigation I had to drive around the block once before I discovered where the restaurant was.

John Fera

If you like fish, you'll like it here. One of my faves! But it's also a market, so be ready for the smell.

Jill Hill

Fish market is our barometer of bad food. If you like Fish Market we don't trust the palet. As New Orleans transplants we have high standards.

jessica easterling

The food was amazing! Seafood Tasted so fresh. I had the Cioppino and my date had the Pallella. Great prices and big portions. We couldn't finish it all. I recommend this restaurant to all who are seafood lovers. You will not be disappointed!

Payton H. Stantis

Greek Island anything would probably be my last meal. I love the Fish Market. My family has made some wonderful memories here and it doesn't hurt that the food is good too. George knows what he's doing!

Pat Cleveland

Got the 2 piece fried whole catfish dinner. Served hot & so good. Food is consistently as expected, fresh & well prepared. Love the ice tea & large lemon wedges

Shannon Neal

Enjoyed a Sunday meal at the bar. The staff is extremely nice and helpful.

One of my favorite places to eat at least one a month gotta have it

I loved the atmosphere, great service, and food just as good. Will be going back, Fo Sho!

I’ve eaten at fish market several times, my co worker and I placed an order today, some of the same things we usually order, the food was hot, and horrible! No seasoning, no flavor, the wings were sitting in grease, the shrimp wasn’t fried, it was soft and soggy, the fried were limp. The green tomatoes were hot, crispy and BLAND! The seasoning is normally fine, the batter on the shrimp normally crispy but for tonight the cook did an awful job with all entrees! Waste of 57.00$

We have been there twice an definitely will not be going back. First time I had the chicken po boy and got sick as soon as I got home. The last time we went, I ordered shrimp in sauce. Our waiter had disappeared for 20 minutes after we received the food. My husband had to flag down another one to let him know that we needed to speak with ours. He asked what the problem was to see if he could help, we informed him that my shrimp had not been cleaned. He looked at us surprised an said they never are. When people order shrimp, I let them know that we do not clean them. (Our waiter did not) I was absolutely dumbfounded. If I had known that before hand I would not have ordered anything. I do not eat seafood a lot for this reason. But this to me is unbelievable that a busy fish market/sit down restaurant, that people wait 30-40 minutes just to be seated, then another 45-60 minutes for the food itself, would not take the time to clean the food or let people know that when ordering.

Just had another delicious seafood dinner at The Fish Market. The grilled amberjack was cooked to perfection, and was a very generous portion. Greek potatoes with ranch dressing were ever so good. Many more things are available on the huge menu. Highly recommended.

Melinda Dickerson

Excellent food and service! We will return. The Greek fish (I don't remember the true dish name) was fantastic.

Georgia Blair

Service and food was excellent!

Sharon Murphy

Been there a long time, the cooks know what their doing in that kitchen. The server are great and attentive. All employees serve you with a SMILE ON THEIR FACES that make you want to SMILE ON YOUR FACE.

Andrew Fandre

Huge menu of well executed and fresh seafood. Giant portions with lots of sides. I had cioppino which did not have much stock so the tomato component was too dominant. I wasn't too excited to sop up the sauce with bread, but it had large chunks of calamari and shrimp and crab and fish. The slaw salad was angel hair with lots of feta cheese. It was very large and tasty. Lots of condiments at the table with many different spice options.

Stephanie mize

Food is really bad. Was so disappointed in the poor quality and taste of everything that was ordered. There was 2 of us and we had 5 different dishes that we shared, so I tried a a fair sampling of dishes. I am a big fan of taking home my leftovers. I didn’t even bother taking home, anything, from the large quantity of uneaten dishes, nor did my friend. The waiter was fabulous, wonderful service, engaging, and great sense of humor. Wish I could remember his name. Looked at the “fresh” seafood they had for sale. The fish was a poor color, eyes so cloudy they looked like milk, a definite no-no when buying fresh fish. If that is what they are selling , for people to examine in the original state to take home to cook, just think what they are sending out to customers, cooked. My observation is this particular restaurant is only interested in bottom line profit. They have a “reputation” as a good place to dine but have cut cost and quality and are coasting on past reputation.

It took an hour for our food to arrive, while the table next to us came in 20 minutes after and got their food before us. We had 7, so did they! Food was good though once it arrived!!!
