NAMI Sioux Falls is a valuable organization that helps individuals and families find the treatment and support they need to live with mental illness. The idea of a Dancing with the Stars fundraiser was a novel one. There are talented dance instructors in Sioux Falls. It had all the makings of a stellar event. However, NAMI would have been better off planning their own event rather than hiring Addie Graham-Kramer & The Event Company. Here’s why:
• An event planner should be behind the scenes – not being the center of attention as M.C. There are any number of people who are part of NAMI who could have done a wonderful job hosting the event and would have been pleased and honored to do so. Or, any number of other personalities in the community for that matter. I spoke to two very prominent individuals who claimed they had volunteered to MC and were told that the spot(s) were already filled.
• The event planner and band leader made the whole night about them. The bantering went on forever, and half the crowd left early. Our table was actually counting the number of times she said “I” instead of “our” or “we are” when discussing the event. I did this and I did that and I’m this and I’m that…really! By the way the count was 32 times she used first person!!
• At $50 or $75 a ticket, the food should have been more than a salami sandwich and babybel cheese still in the wrapper. My group had been next door and had experienced some fantastic food from the District’s kitchen only to be served a meatball. When I asked about the food variety from one of the staff, we were told that the food choices were left up to the event planner. Hopefully that would translate to pay less money for food and give more money to NAMI but we all doubt that is the case. And if prices would have been lower all the way around, you would have seen the whole place packed and still would have raised good money for NAMI.
• Having the boss of one of the contestants be a judge? Really? I bet all of the other contestants were happy about that.
• If you are going to use technology to try to encourage donations, make sure it works. And then be realistic for your ask when you have already required thousands for sponsorships and high ticket prices. It something doesn’t work…move on…DON’T wait 45 minutes to try to fix it. We already had sat through the MC’s nonsense, then enjoyed great dancing to only be left to wait why the planner attempted to fix some technical difficulties. People waited a few minutes then started leaving as we already knew who the winner was.
• The format of Dancing with the Stars is couple dances. Yes, I know two couples had female instructors with female “celebrities” and that was perfectly fine. Obviously there are probably more female instructors in town. But there are other dances like the first two women did that the final pair could have done side by side. Having the last dance be Thriller with a full group of made-up zombies who do this dance ALL THE TIME was so unfair to all of the other instructors who created ORIGINAL dances and the people that learned those dances. NO disrespect meant to Chelsea who was the contestant that got put into the Thriller dance. Either that should not have been judged or her partner should have picked something else. Again, our entire table was in shock when a group dance won.
In closing, kudos to all of the brave dancers who put on a great show in spite of Addie Graham-Kramer and The Event Company.
