REVIEWS OF Prairie Berry Winery IN South Dakota

Andrew Baudhuin

Not biker friendly. The atmosphere was very condescending.

Michelle Overdorf

Prairie Berry Winery is the best. They have a huge selection of award winning wine. My favorites are the sweet ones. Nobody makes them like Prairie Berry. Raspberry Honeywine, Blueberry Honeywine and Peach Mead are my favorites. They also have great food and a great atmosphere. They ship all over the states. And free tastings, can't forget that. I just love Prairie Berry!!

Glen Morris

A really unique winery that has a lot of variety of wines! I was a little sad to see that all the surrounding grocery stores were selling the wine cheaper than if you went to the winery itself....

AnJie Havens

Great place visit a winery in Hill City SD. I don't go on many wine tours. The few I have been on have a small $4-5 charge for wine tasting. Here, you got your choice of five wines of your choice, from all of their wines, complimentary! The menu was delicious, all homemade, from scratch. The chicken salad sandwich was so good. The tomato basil soup was spot on! Nice visit.

Jake J

Outstanding wines. I don't like wine and I like theirs.

A McNair

Free tasting, friendly staff, and beer from next door if wine is not your fancy :)

Betsy

Wine was wondeful as usual. Great food....tad pricey, but delicious. Cheesecake was amazing!

Karin Henninger

I visit Prairie Berry every time I'm heading to my gramma's house in Deadwood, SD. Discovered it by accident a few years ago but definitely glad I stumbled upon it! They have local flavors and a nod to SD culture featuring local heroes and landmarks on their bottles. It's fun to not only learn about the wine, but then to learn about the people featured such as Calamity Jane after you leave the winery. Prices are incredibly reasonable and the staff are friendly and more than ready to answer your questions! Next time I'm there I'm stopping by the brewery next door!

Chris Otto

Good wines and a very nice cafe with counter service.

Amber Fontenot

The wines are very good. They have free samples which is a great way to choose your favorites before you buy. The staff is very friendly.

Thaddeus Jockheck

The people who work at Prairie Berry are a knowledgeable crew of wine enthusiasts that are welcoming and won't hesitate to talk about their history. Great wine and great pairings. Redass Rhubarb is a must try!

Rob

Wine is mediocre, do the free wine tasting.

George & Meg Mar

Amazing winery, a must see when visiting Rapid City or Rushmore. Very welcoming. Offer 5 wines to taste for free. I liked their award winning Rhubarb. Nice lawn to relax and let the kids run. They also serve food. Only a short walk in the sidewalk to the Miner brewery. Highly recommend!

Stan Havens

An interesting wine, nothing like I've ever had before. Refreshing

Dave Hard

The wine is great; they have a large, diverse selection and they rotate it frequently. They also have an assortment of food and snacks which complement their wines very well and also taste great. Tastings are free and the staff is very friendly and seems pretty knowledgable. The atmosphere is also really nice, with plenty of seating inside and out and chic, artistic decor. Overall a great place to hang out or wind down after hiking or biking or whatever in the hills, and if wine isn't your thing they have an awesome brewery next door. Highly recommend!

Betsi Greene

On a recent trip to South Dakota we stopped at this winery mostly because of their billboards advertising the KickAss Rhubarb wine :) It was a great place and a fun experience. The free wine tasting was tasty and educational. And the food was amazing. We came back at least three times, joined the Wine Club and had supper there one night. My friend and I each ordered a case shipped home (free shipping!) and they arrived today in great shape. All in all the Prairie Berry Winery was a great experience and made for a great visit!

Debbie Conover

Great local winery!

Stephen Johnson

Seemed staff was over whelmed with other guests.

Jodi was amazing when I went up to get my wine for the month. I did a tasting with her and she was so amazing. She knew her stuff about the wine and the black hills. She was very enjoyable to just talk with about everything. The wine at prairie berry is beyond amazing! They staff always knows what to suggest to your liking!

Kirsten Maki

Excellent choice of wines. Free samples of up to 5. Friendly staff. Recommend Red Ads Rhubarb and Buffaloberry Fusion

Mike Norris

Delicious food and fantastic wines. Don't forget to tip your wine servers for their excellent knowledge and service.

John Oleson

It's very unique and had a very warm, rustic atmosphere!

marc guilford

Free tastings! Wine was only so-so. Bottles are overpriced. Lots of sweet options is you like that sort thing.

Jackson Cunningham

The food is wonderful. Jen the chef was amazing. Will definitely be returning

Max McCray

Excellent wine tastings

barbara patterson

This is a delitful winery. I love their wines. Everyone is so nice.

Derek Booth

While in Rapid city we went to Prairie Berry as my wife and daughter were there last year and they raved about the rhubarb wine, and it didn't disappoint. The wine tasting offered an extensive selection and staff were friendly and knowledge without tempting to hardshell. We left after purchasing several bottles.

Debra Reub

Very nice facility! Friendly, knowledgeable staff! Great wine!

Tammy McDonald

Holding back on that elusive 5th star because we didn't have any food here. However, Joe, our wine server, was excellent! He explained the background and origins of the winery then proceeded to go through the wine choices. He was informative and honest about what he didn't know. It started to get busy, at first we were the only ones at the bar, but he handled the busyness well. We ended up getting three bottles. We were only getting 2 but Joe have us a free taste of the frozen treat so we got those ingredients as well. Fun relaxed place to stop in after our bike ride.

Saber Uddin

We had some of their wine in a restaurant nearby before. We decided to go inside to try out more of their wine. The tasting was free to begin with. Their wine is really great. Some of the best I’ve ever had. We bought a bottle from there and they also offer glasses of wine so I had a glass as well. The staff were really knowledgeable and friendly. I would highly recommend.

Carmen Werning

Awesome service with awesome wine and much history behind it.

Jenna Luksetich

First off, food was amazing. Secondly, the wine tasting was so fun and educational! She was very helpful and choosing our wines! I got a bottle for dinner with my friends, a bottle for drinking at our cabin, then three bottles to take home. I have yet to be disappointed! I live in Michigan and signed up for their wine club, which is a very reasonable price. Can't wait to receive my first order!

Lisa Harris Gore

Delicious wine, friendly staff, amazing menu! Kids even loved this place with the games that were on the tables. One of my must return to places!

Clayton Fitzgerald

Bud Bussard

Good wine

Natalie Randall

Delicious wine and free samples! The staff was very nice and friendly! There is NO better place to sample wine in the Black Hills!

Wayne Dalton

Connie Gerdes

I bought 5 bottles of wine. I never do that.

Ian Allen

This place is awesome! Stylish spot, friendly service, and the restaurant has some really great food. The wines are ok—if you like extremely sweet drinks this will totally be your jam. But it’s fun to taste nonetheless. The Anna Pesä wines—in particular the Meritage—were actually pretty good. The restaurant here has an exceptional menu and the food was great, we both loved our sandwiches and salads. This is the perfect spot to stop when exploring the Black Hills as it’s a fun experience, good lunch, and the wine makes for a nice souvenir or gift for someone back home. Highly recommend!

Cristian Moreno

Very attentive staff. Nice experience of a free of charge wine tasting

John Park

It was awesome, staff is very friendly and knowledgeable!

Elizabeth Jensen

ppandbw

A ton of wine to sample, 5 free samples per session. Nice patio to order a glass or bottle and enjoy the afternoon.

Andi Babbs

Consistently good wine. Prairie Berry Winery offers five free samples you pick from their wine list. None of the wines are overly astringent or icky sweet. They offer a a key that indicates how dry or sweet the profile of the wine is. The ingredients are sourced from the area and either feature 100% or majority make up for their depending on the recipe of the beverage.

Carl Etheredge

Prairie Berry is a jewel of the Black Hills. They craft consistently good wine, year after year, and their kitchen makes wonderful food. Any time a friend or relative visits, I have to take them to PB.

Yong Lee

Free wine tasting!!!

Richard Stratton

Staff was nice and knowledgeable, wines are mostly other fruits, not just grapes, interesting flavors. Highly recommend if you are looking for some one-of-a-kind, mostly sweet wines.

Ashley Krall

FREE wine tasting, need I say more? The atmosphere is wonderful and the staff is so friendly and informative. We always make a point to stop when we're in the area for our free tasting and a few bottles. There's more than just wine! They provide meals and coffee along with their amazing and unique wines. We have never had a bad experience here!

jed pittman

Let me start by saying the staff (Sara) was very friendly knowledgeable and attentive, solid 5 star. The wine was fairly good, about a 4 star. But this place has been so heavily commercialised and over priced that it had really gone down to a 3 star. We're glad we went...buuut prolly wouldn't go back.

Allison Yeakey

Fun wine tasting with 5 free samples. Food was delicious. We had the grilled cheese and tomato basil soup. I'm not a sweet wine fan, but I enjoyed the Pheasant Reserve and it was fun to sample the sweeter options.

Jeremy Azevedo

An elegant winery nestled in the heart of the Black Hills. The wines are superbly crafted, focusing mostly on sweet and fruity varieties. They also provide an assortment of artesian food, including pizza, open-face and flat-grilled sandwiches, and artisanal plates. The ambiance is warm and inviting. The only downside I could find was the lack of seating for larger groups, and mix of friendly and unfriendly staff. My wine server was fine, but our food server was less than excited to serve us. Overall, a pleasant experience. One last note: leave the kids at home. Their attempts at "kid-friendly" leave much to be desired.

Libby Katherine

By far my favorite place to get wine from! Large selection of flavors. I would highly suggest the Lawrence Elk wine as a personal favorite. Free wine tastings. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Beautiful facility - great for events as well (receptions, parties, etc.) If you also like beer, they have their brewery next door.

Jen L

Actually I did alot of research on this place and was the only place I actually wanted to stop at while in the area. I was disappointed, unfortunately. I felt like I was treated like I had no idea about wine. When I asked a question it was answered with a general answer. Wine was just ok. Did not like that the server swirled my glass for me. I like to do that myself, when asked the server to not do that, unfortunately she did not listen. I do appreciate they do that for people who have no idea. Will not be back.

Michael Durga

Love this place

Carson Merkwan

good spot, enjoyed stone faces winery too.

Jay Eggler

The wines range from dry to fruity sweet and I thought the food was great!

Jared Livingston

I'm not a huge fan of their wine, but the restaurant is a great little spot for lunch.

Andrew Blevins

Excellent wine tasting experience, as well as a very talented kitchen. You can easily spend a Saturday afternoon enjoying this little gem while sipping some truly amazing local wines, or partaking some great local beer from their brewery next door.

Harold Rothi

Rose Mary Kor

Did the Sip & Paint today. Good fun!

Barry Gordon

I will be back

Rochelle Johnson

Friendly and helpful staff. Get to try 5 samples of excellent wine!

Dan Burandt

Great staff and great food! Keep up the good work.

Barbara Appleton

Taste several different wines, and we got to hear about how the winery got started. Awesome place to visit.

Karen Brutzman

Charles DeGeest

Fantastic wine and food. The beer next door at Miner is also worth the trip. Also a great place for weddings and parties!

Michael Thoreson

I am not a wine drinker at all, but during a tasting back in summer 2015 I purchased a bottle of the Frontenac and tucked it in my wife's wine rack. Fast forward 3 years, we moved and when we moved the wine rack I saw and remembered this bottle of wine. Well, today was the day I opened it and drank it. This is a very good flavorful wine. The taste is full bodied and has nice afternotes. I am very happy that I bought this bottle 3 years ago, I am even more happy that I drank it!

Julie Treib

Very nice selection of wines, found their lunch to be rather spend for what you are served in food...

Jay Rothleutner

Can't beat free wine tasting!!!!

Clairede Dirval

One of my favorite places.

Ginny Alexander

I have been to this winery many times and I LOVE what they have! Not only do they have complimentary wine tastings, but their deli is incredible and the wine is so fun and delicious! I would recommend this to anyone who is in the Black Hills to stop by, get lunch and enjoy some incredible wines! Worth the stop!

Ashton Zelinsky

I visit Prairie Berry annually and it is always a pleasant experience! The staff is super friendly and welcoming, the wine is amazing and the food is delicious!!! Especially the grilled cheese sandwich ❤️ This year my husband and I are celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary and we were pleasantly surprised with a free lunch and a free bottle of wine!! Thank you so much to the hospitality manager Irman for making our day extra special

Mike Ermi

Kathryn Reiswig

Sonja is an extraordinary help over the phone for wine club members. She's positive, answers the phone with a warm heart, and truly cares about what she does. Thank you for the great customer service Sonja!

Da Radi

Free wine tasting. Great quality. Enjoyed the conversation.

Lauren Parsell

Had the best time visiting friends there. Love that the brewery was right beside it too! Super friendly staff.

siederic

We visit wineries all over the country, and this is definitely one of our favorites! The wines are always great, the staff always friendly, and on our most recent trip, we enjoyed a lunch from the kitchen. It was all fantastic! I’d recommend Prairie Berry if you are in the Black Hills, it is a must stop destination!

Jessica McCoullough

Love love love this place!!! First winery we've been to that every wine we tasted was delicious. They also had some amazing jams. Pretty sure we bought the place out!

Robert Weller

A must see if you are in the area. Friendly and knowledgeable staff are actively helping people. Free wine tasting is a must when visiting!

Mr&Mrs Cowger

Loved the winery and loved the complimentary tastings! Went home with a couple of cases of our favorites in case we can’t come back for awhile. Really cool atmosphere and great fruity wines!

Andrew LaPierre

Food was good. Not all portions were a good size for the price.

Caitlyn Engebretson

Great wine, food, and atmosphere! We stop in every time we’re in the Hills and we’re also part of the wine club. It’s so much fun to spend the afternoon here. The staff is knowledgeable, customer service is great, and the food is excellent!

Kylie Gangwish

Husband and I have never been here and they were absolutely wonderful. You're able to test a few wines for free while learning the history of the winery and the wines and how they came to be. There's a grill available as well if you want to snack with your wine. They have a great variety in their flavors as well. Very clean and spacious area. The shop also has scrumptious jelly and cheeses. The staff is very knowledgeable about their wines and know which cheeses/meats/meals go with what wine. Hospitality was a 10/10. Definitely recommend for all.

Timothy Dodd

Great wine and even better food. They do an awesome job of being able to filter in large groups of people yet they still have a cool atmosphere and a friendly staff. The outdoor patio is a cool place to hang out and relax. We really enjoyed our wine and meal at Prairie Berry.

Tallea Gallegos

Great place with excellent wine and food. Good beer next door at the Miner as well.

Jess Dudley

Food was great, wine was divine and a good time was had by all

Shellie Silva

A must see on your trip. Excellent food, great wine selection. Furbabies welcomed on the patio.

Bailiwick

Super cool winery! I visited Rapid City from Portland, Oregon a few weeks ago, and on our way to Crazy Horse Memorial, my mother, aunt, and uncle and I stopped at Prairie Berry, which turned out to be one of my favorite stops on the whole trip. I bought THE most delicious Red Ass Rhubarb jam (thank god they sell it online, because if they didn't, I'd have to fly back there next week to get more!), and my mother and aunt and I had a heyday at the bar, taste-testing all of the wines. Such a fun winery and I hope to visit again the next time I'm in town.

Chase Kuhlman

Great atmosphere and plenty of options!

Craig Stevens

Very nice staff, Good food and unusual but tasty wines!

Meaghan Kephart

Terry Goke

All the wines were fantastic. I purchased a case but the bad ass rhubarb was the essence of summer in a bottle. Leanna was key in my purchase by recommending wines outside of my picks. Sandi is 5th generation in this business and she shines in every bottle.

Janelle Jennissen

This gets 2 stars because the only redeemable experience we had of this place was the wine itself, which we didn't even try there due to horrible customer service. It was busy when we were there, so we expected a wait for a taste testing, which was fine. But we stood by the bar for 10 minutes, and were not acknowledged at all, not even a hello. We walked to the register to see if we had to be put on a list or something, and got a curt and cranky response. We recommend the wine, but not the tasting room.

Sarah Clyde

Love going here and the staff really know the wine.

Ted Thompson

This place is amazing. Super friendly and knowledgeable staff, some really great wines that stand out, and the food is also amazing. You need to stop in and see it and taste it.

Steve Stulken

They have wines for all tastes and a great crew who are wonderful to talk to. Had a blast sampling a variety of wines.

Cheryl Dillon

Great place to sample some wine, friendly staff.

jason sprague

Ashlea Dunn

My first time at a winery. Great wine and very friendly staff

HA ST

Very good people. Allowed me to order 4 minutes before closing. The food was good too.

John Tiedje

Wine samples 5 free very informative and educational. Loved the mulled cranberry wine, Valiant Bowen apple Brandy drink, red ass rhubarb, and wild Bill. Liked the sandwich and soup special. I forgot they brew 15 beers also can sample those too.

Wendy Peacock

Had a great tasting at the winery and then walked down the sidewalk to the brewery. Beautiful grounds and great wine!

Jim Fox

Great wines and a must stop whenever I'm in the area!

Joel Andrews

Good food and good wines.

Anna Woehler

I love the free wine tastings! The food and wine are delicious. Become a gen 5 wine club member, you won’t regret it!

Kate Gordon

Jo f

The winery looks good the waiter at first kept up with 4 people but after me and a freinds 2nd testing the waiter forgot about us for about 5 min but then did good. The cheese i thought would be great but was not when i got home and had a taste it was terrible. Ended up throwing it out only had 2 tiny slivers off of it. Only thing i recommend is have taste testing of chesse so i dont waste $6 on chesse to throw in the trash

Heidi Kalytka-Dove

Loved it very polite and great wine

Christy Huisenga

Fun and .... YUM! This is a beautiful and elegent winery with very delicious crafted wines and beautifully plated luxurious food. There are two counters for wine tasting. You can have free samples up to five wines, but if you want more (and we did) you can pay $5 extra for five more. Was super fun to learn about the wines and taste all the different kinds. We had the cheese plate which was amazing! I purchased their “Kick Ass” jam to go with it ... so delicious. Then we played a few games of checkers, sat out on their patio and shopped their merch while enjoying a few glasses of wine. Was an awesome time!

Shawn Patrick

Good wine and great people.

Chris Twite

Best wine in the area.

Sue Hanus

Had fun. Tasty wine, beautiful grounds.

Tori Nyblom

All wines are absolutely delicious! You get free samples right away when you walk in. The staff were super nice and went above and beyond to help us learn more about their wines. My friends and I left with eight bottles :D definitely check this place out!

South Dakota Dude

My wife and I are in Heaven every time we go to the Black Hills. We add this location to our trip. Every time.

Pattie Pogue

Beautiful winery along a mountain road. It poured the ENTIRE time we were there yet there was covered outdoor space to sit and enjoy a glass of wine with friends. Some ordered plates of beautiful assorted meats, cheeses, breads and fruit. Not only wines available but jelly, dips and mixers for wine. Most of the staff was very friendly and welcoming. One stinker in the group.

T Brown

Very fun!! Staff very informative and friendly. Definitely recommend!

Peanucklehead Gaming

Amazing! We stop in here everytime we come to South Dakota to see family. Always great beer and wine and super friendly staff. A must go to place.

Stacy Nadeau

Wonderful tasting. Lots of local history shared. And lovely wine!

Brandie J

I enjoy the different wines. Lawrence Elk is one of my favorites. Of course the red ass rhubarb is delish too. I love that they have a wide variety and they are also close to a brewery for those non-wine lovers. I do think the food is way over priced a 19 dollar flat bread is not worth it. And it wasn't that good. :-( go for the wine skip the food go into hill city for food!

Kathie Shea

Staff was very knowledgeable and wine was wonderful.

Greg Framke

Friendly helpful staff, oh yeah and great wine.

Victoria Dugger

My husband and I stopped by for a wine tasting on a snowy January day. Our wine server was kind and we enjoy ourselves in the rustic atmosphere and the South Dakota friendly conversation. The wine was delicious and the snacks in the tasting room hit the spot.

Sana Sulaiman

Good food, good wine, good service.

Donte Whitaker

I can't believe this place, they give you a free tasting, decently priced wine, and amazing food. It can't be possible, but it is. We had the bread and three spreads, which looked underwhelming at first but that change quickly because every spread and every single piece of bread tasted freaking great. We even got a cheesecake afterwards and it tasted as good as it looked. The lady, can't remember her name but had wavy blonde hair and super enthusiastic, was so helpful because we looked so lost when we walked in. Could have bought a whole case of wine but it wouldn't have fit in our car. Will return upon arrival into Black Hills.

Zoe Brumfield

Lovely visit and nice people. A definite "go to" place.

LaDonna Marie

Good atmosphere, and friendly and helpful staff.

Osceola Condulle

Great little spot with award winning wine. We did a free taste test of 5 wines and they added one more. We needed to rest up so we got a snack of Charcuterie (meats, cheese, olives, bread, peppers). Amazing little spot!

Dee IM

Excellent service, crazy wine names and tastes, a very large selection to choose from. The wine tasting was so good but they needed more staff. Must try Calamity Jane! I got 4 bottles.

James Nichols

Extremely friendly and good service. Personally, didn’t find the wines as appealing. Prices were fair.

Elizabeth Latino

This place is awesome. Betty helped us pick out some delicious wine and jams. Would highly recommend stopping by.

Tony Verchio

We stopped in for lunch and their flat bread pizza we excellent. I had Meritage which was excellent as well. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about their wine and food and give great pairing advice. A trip to Hill City is not complete without a stop.

Bridge S L

Awesome place

Steve August

Gave me a whole new view on wine! If you like strawberry rhubarb pie, you'll definitely enjoy the Red Ass. Carol was informative and friendly while providing a quick history of each bottle of wine. Picked up quite a few bottles to take with and signed up to get more delivered when I get home!

David McChesney

Spent about 45 seconds in there. Vacationing with my wife and 2 children. Not a unique situation in this area. We wuicly figured out there is zero possibility of keepinf the kids occupied and enjoying themseves while we taste and enjoy the product. No staffed tables or serving areas. Just a walk up tasting counter and warehouse like setting with self serve cafateria style seating. If you have children dont bother. Also $15+ for bottles of sugary table wine is a little steep considering the economies of scale they have at work.

Eric Barke

Food was excellent, and the wine is tasty, and I'm not a wine drinker

niel nordmann

Nicholas Miller

Great wines and great place to stop. Tastings to let you know what is good so you don't end up with a wine you are not happy with in the end.

Seth Koch

Cindy Kellar

This was our last stop for the day, after the Bear Country & the Railroad trip. We had a wonderful wine hostess...who was funny, & helpful. We ordered some food, & mine wasn't up to the cook's standards (per our server's exact words). So...they gave me the food they "messed up", to eat while I waited for the better food. They were so sweet...& I actually never even noticed any difference! Either way...food was great, staff was wonderful, the wine was amazing, & the atmosphere was beautiful!

Rosemarie Reynolds

Nice place, 5 complimentary tastings. ALL were great! Will definitely be back!

Tina Falcon

The food was awesome. The cheese was good but the jams and wine are out of a grade a store! Thumbs up!

Jon Pitt

First of all I am not a big wine person, Girlfriend and I stopped there. I was buying wine for friends. To make a long story short. I ended up buying a case of wine for myself. This place is very nice and the staff is very friendly. They know there wine!!! I will be buying more wine from them!!!

Gordon Smith

Well worth stopping at. Been there several times.

Stacey Pennington

Great atmosphere with a unique twist on winemaking. Mostly sweet wines made with local varietals of berries. Not good for our pallets, but definitely worth stopping to try.

Susan Brittain King

A very pleasant experience. The food and staff were exceptional.

Annie Jansen

We went here May of 2017. The free wine tasting made our day, as my Mom and myself were under the weather. The Wild Bill and Calamity Jane wines are my favorite! Will have to order some and have it delivered to Hudson, Wisconsin. Will be back to visit Hill City and Deadwood in 2019!

Mer Lin
