Very rude customer service. Never again

My little sister took driving lessons with both Mrs. Margret and Lyon and she was happy with both. Mrs. Margret provides excellent feedback and teaches young drivers how to be safe on the road. I am so glad we decided to go with Helms. I would definitely recommend them. We took advantage of the 6 hours package and I can honestly have my sister behind the wheel now without clinching to the door handle. Thank you Helms!

My wife went for one class with these people, it was an African American woman that came to instruct her. My wife was a beginner and she told her that from the get go. About 5 minutes into the lesson, the instructor started getting impatient and started showing her disgust towards my wife. This made my wife even more nervous, which brought out more irritation and agitation on the instructors part. That was the first and last lesson that my wife went to with them. That lesson was a complete waste of time and money and I never sent her to this terrible driving school again. I would never recommend this place to anyone ever!

My first day and i learned alot. So far so good!

Mrs. Helms was one of the most rude people I have ever met. After going through 4 days of driving school with her I would never want to have to see her again. After rudely calling me out in front of the class for something I did not do and one of her crazy students did she completely ignored the class and got off topic talking about herself. She could not control the class and gave really bad information that was very confusing. After finishing up the written part she declined or made up excuses on why she didn't get back to us. My mom called her at least once a day for 3 months until we finally got to do the driving portion. I would not waste your time and money here as I have been having to reteach and take more classes trying to get the right information that she did not give us. I do not feel conformable enough to drive because of her information and I wouldn't want to be on the road with anybody that went to her school.

Take note that Helms Driving School In Charlotte, NC is rude and unprofessional. Wrote them a check in August 2017 for classes for my twin sons. Got a call in February 2019 saying they had just found the check and demanding that I send them a new check. Told them I had closed that account, was no longer married to the boys’ father and needed proof the first check had not been deposited. Was threatened with small claims court and told that I got what I asked for as my “twins are driving, aren’t they?” In fact they are not, Helms Driving School. Take 1/2 and go chase my ex husband for the other 1/2. Your screw up, not ours.

I had my very first and only lesson with Leon. He was great! Very chill and laid back. He doesn't do anything that will make you feel uncomfortable. He is very patient and understanding. He also understand that new drivers are prone to driving how they "feel comfortable". However, he will correct you but in a very POLITE and respectful manner. He is very honest but isn't a douche by any means. He said all i needed was ONE lesson because I am a OK driver to be a new driver. I've had previous lessons with other schools. I went for my road test and unfortunately I failed. It was fine because he didn't put me down and he made my test a bit easier for me. I went back to take my road test with Margaret and it was a pretty uncomfortable journey. She made me feel like I was doing EVERYTHING wrong because it wasn't "how she teach her students" I listened to her "constructive criticism" even when she told me she didn't believe i would pass my road test today. I was appreciative of her brutal honesty but i felt intimidated because she told me my positive attitude about retaking the road test was "too cocky" In response i said "Telling myself that i can handle this test again is my way of reassuring myself that i have NOTHING to worry about" she still felt like i was too cocky. She made me feel like i would have to retake the test and i would have put 240 down the drain. However, she did have a piece of paper in the back window that HELPED me nail my straight backing. She was a SWEET HEART when she wasn't giving too much of her opinions(or felt to me like an argument). I PASSED MY ROAD TEST and we hugged and went our separate ways. I LOVE LEON THOUGH! He is just the best.

Very traumatic experience. During my 20 h session i had 4 instructors ended up with the owner. She was rude to me, traumatized me to tears every time, stressed me out. Yanked the wheel around, yelled at me. She is experienced and it shows but she has no patience, no empathy towards people. Do not recommend it at all.

I took the road test today at the DMV with Mr. Leon. I passed the test without making any mistakes. This achievement is the result of not just my efforts, but also of the great training and services from Helms Driving School. I would personally recommend all instructors, because they are all great at training their students. My favorite instructor, though, is Leon; he knows exactly what to expect from his students and what factors are the most important for passing the road test and for being safe drivers. He also gives specific instructions and advises to trainees along with helpful compliments. Ms. Margaret is also a very great instructor if one needs to become a safe driver who takes driving seriously. She is the most honest instructor in telling her students where to improve their skills. The only drawback when driving with Margaret is that since she is the owner of Helms Driving School, who always tries her best to keep the school in its greatest shape, she often time has to take phone calls from customers. This may be a distraction to some drivers, such as myself. All in all, I must say that Helms Driving School is highly recommended for learners.

I will never recommend them..

Decent communication. Course sufficient. Signed up my 2nd child for their Driver’s Ed course.

The worst driving school ever. As a young adult who recently moved to North Carolina, looking for a driving school saying that this was the best company is a lie. I wasted so much money for some instructor to tell me I was good until I had the original instructor who took me to the DMV and said I was the worst and yell at me. If you really wanna save time and money PLEASE choose a different school.

Greg James

Be wary. They seem to be one of the only options. The owner is very, very unprofessional. Poor customer service. I recommend seeking alternatives.

Wanda A. 1.31.2016: "My experience with "Helms Driving School" has been simply "outstanding", from my initial call and discussion with "Ms. Margaret", to the actual driving experience with "Vicky." Vicky was consistently patient, personable and professional at all times. Her ability to convey clear and precise driving instructions, in a manner that is very supportive and encouraging was truly "uplifting". Vicky is such an "excellent" driving school instructor, as evidenced in the driving experience that I shared with her for the past two days. In closing, if you are in need of driving school services, I definitely recommend "Helms Driving School" as your "first choice".

Very negative experience with Helms, especially the owner. Unfortunately, she was not willing to explain her prices or processes. You'll find that their voicemail boxes are always full (and unable to take messages), they rarely answer the phone, and unable to get in touch with. We only contacted Helms because we thought Jordan wouldn't be able to get our daughter in over the summer. Helms assured they could get her in, but then never called to schedule my daughter. In the meantime, Jordan called with availability. Helms wouldn't release some necessary form without me paying her a fee of $45 (for Ms. Helm's travel fee) which was never explained. Since then, I've been able to experience Jordan and they are professional, courteous and more than fair. I'd steer away from Helms if at all possible.

Fired a woman that didn't deserve to be fired. She was very great and taught me very well. I am highly disappointed to hear that the boss yelled at her in the car and continued to call me and when I requested for her he said that she wouldn't be there tomorrow most likely. I highly recommend Brittany and I loved driving with her. She kept me very calm while teaching me things I needed to know. Very disappointed at what happened with her boss and I am not happy with what I had to see from him.

Do not send your child to these people. Not only did my child receive the worst instruction from Ms. Helms, the instructor GRABBED THE WHEEL WHILE MY CHILD WAS DRIVING to show her how to "properly turn the wheel during a turn". Other driving tips included: ride the curb to avoid oncoming traffic, stay at the maximum posted speed at all times, increase to speed limit while executing a turn, driving in the fast lane on 485 while telling my child to speed up, slamming on the brakes when my child was clearing an intersection and the light turned yellow - then making her put the car in reverse! Ms. Helms then berated my child for properly executing a 3 pt turn, claiming that she'd be failed during her test for coming to a complete stop before attempting the turn. Insanity! Take your hard earned money elsewhere!

I think the teenage driving program is run very well. I felt Mr. Helms was very helpful and communicative. My daughter felt very comfortable with his instruction. She learned alot and feels very prepared for her drivers test. I also feel the fee is a very good value for what is offered in instruction and driving. I would highly recommend.

Mrs. helms is not a very nice lady I don't recommend that you bring your child here

I'm 20 years old and I've had a permit twice. The 1st time was after I graduated HS in 2011 and the 2nd time was after it expired on Jan 11th 2013. Out of all the months that I had a permit, I've probably driven like 10-15 times. I signed up for 4 hour lessons with Mike, but after my 1st lesson he told me I didn't need 4; so instead I ended up taking 2 lessons and went to the DMV. I now have my license! :) Mike was GREAT! When I did something wrong, he had no problem with correcting me, nor did he sugar coat anything. Money well spent! I would recommend him to ANYONE who wants to get their license! Thanks again, Mike! :) - Teneisha
