I attended this school (new britain) on a WIOA scholarship through the American Job Center. I was unemployed and receiving public assistance and had previous experience driving non cdl box trucks for companies so I thought this would be a great way to advance my career. I chose this school because it is the only CDL school in Hartford county accessible by public transit, which I am currently dependent on. I was persuaded by my caseworker to get the class A license. I enrolled in the program but felt like I wasn't really getting the hang of driving the tractor trailers. I was struggling with the maneuvers and felt very uncomfortable on the road. Tom and Pink tried their best and definitely seem to care about their students but I just wasnt getting it. After struggling in class and learning more about the trucking industry, I discovered that life on the road for a month at the time wasn't for me especially given my unstable and hazardous living situation at the time. I asked both the instructors and my caseworker if I could test for the class B license instead since I felt that would be better suited for me. They both said no that would not be possible because of the way the state funding is set up which doesn't make any sense because Tom is getting paid regardless. It seemed as if these big class A tractor trailer companies are paying Tom commission for every student they recruit and he probably didnt want to lose that. Money was running low and I had to find a place to live ASAP so I was forced to drop out of the program and look for a job. If given the opportunity to return to this school to test for the class B I definitely would. As for Tom being racist, although his viewpoints are a little too Trumpish for my tastes, which is not surprising considering he's an ex cop who grew up on a farm, I feel like the guy has good intentions and tries his best as an instructor and treats people fairly from what I've seen. He also tells a lot of interesting stories and has a good sense of humor which makes the class go by faster so the review about the gun doesn't surprise me, but all in all I think he's a good guy he just has different perspectives and I would do anything to be able to attend this school again and get my class B.
