I initially thought this guy was great and gave him a 5 star review. However, my last experience was about as bad as you can get. Dr. Michels gave me a spinal steroid injection one Thursday morning in October. That afternoon I was not feeling myself and was angry with my wife for no reason and was feeling and acting odd. I went to bed early, around 9 pm because I just wasn't feeling well. I awoke at midnight with a bad headache and huge thirst. We called the "call if you have any of these symptoms" emergency line and after repeated calls, finally got a response at 6am, 6 hours after our first call. He told my wife that he did not respond to the call because he thought I just wanted pain drugs. By this time, the ambulance was en route because I could barely walk and was nearly incoherent. At the emergency room, they were amazed that I could talk at all as my blood Ph was 7.4 and I was lucky to be alive. After 5 days in the hospital, 3 in ICU, I finally went home with the same back pain that I started with. Michel's says he is in the pain management business. I went to see him for a bulging disc that another neurosurgeon said that I needed surgery on. I was in massive pain but was not taking any pain medication. I asked Michel's for pain medication and he prescribed 2 Hydrocodones a day and apparently immediately labelled me as a druggie. Anyone who has had chronic back pain knows that this dosage will do little to nothing to relieve the pain. This guy is so worried about prescribing pain meds that there is no way you are going to get any relief by seeing him. Oh, and if you do end up getting a spinal injection and have a problem, just go to the emergency room. Calling his "emergency number" is worthless and probably outright dangerous if you actually have a medical problem. I ended up having major back surgery in November to replace the disc and do some work on the nerve canal in my spine. Four months later I am doing much better and am almost back to normal, no thanks to this joker.

I highly recommend Dr.Michels for pain management.He and his staff really understand that when you are hurting long waits for appointments and/or procedures are unacceptable.He goes out of his way to accommodate your requests for prompt action such as surgery center injections to relieve pain.There is little or no waiting in his office for your appointments which is somewhat unique these days.He is very professional but very friendly and reassuring and will spend all the time with you that you want to discuss your medical problem.

Life saver! When searching for a Dallas Pain Doctor because of intense lower back pain and sciatica pain from a bulged disc, I started with Dr Michels. I actually started with who is the best in the nation and found Dr Michels. I flew in from San Diego to go to the best pain doctor in the country. NFL players and long list of famous people go to his for care. He quickly was able to tell me exactly what was going on. He explained everything so clearly. We started with some very conservative options. I respect he starts with a mindset of how to solve pain non-surgically first. That quickly was clear more was needed. We went to epideral shots which helped with pain. Dr Michels is a radiologist which gives him unique ability to see imaging when doing an epideral shot. He explained that one clearly too. Awesome, a doctor who is better equipped when dealing with my spine! My situation elevated to needing a micro lumbar discetomy. Dr Michels lead me all the way through the path of being at a 8-9 out of 10 on the pain scale to being pain free! Amazing! Changed my life without a doubt. I can't recommend him enough. Google needs an extra star here. If you have back pain, he is the best Dallas Pain Doctor and really the best pain doctor in the country in my opinion.

My medical situation is grave and upon meeting Dr. Michaels, he had such a charming charisma, he instantly put my self and my wife at ease and he began telling us what his prognosis was for my future and telling us how he was going to make it happen in such a calm, cool manner that both of us took his explanation of my condition as very serious. Dr. Michaels's had props of the spine and he was able to directly pinpoint the area of concern and gave us his thoughts of how he could make it happen without a grave tone in his voice. Everything was a matter a factual information and he delivered it in such a way that we had absolutely no reservation in his prognosis and the steps he would take to ensure with such confidence, that he would have me walking again. I've been to many doctors to discuss my spine but no doctor before had a virtual resolution for my condition and both Sophie and I were charmed by his intense and full commitment to help me, explaining absolutely everything that he could do for me with his plan of action. If we had a question for him, he never had to pause to think of an answer and he had that answer addressed and again, he spoke with such dignity in his approach with is and the appointment was very satisfying. He's an all star in out book and he's very distinguished and quite a handsome man!!!

Ask me again after treatment for evaluation- I judge more by results than mere words and presentation but so far.... looks very good.

Dr John Michels is one of the best Pain Management Doctors I have met, I have over 40 years of back problems up to and including surgery. I highly recommend giving him a chance at helping you as early in your pain as possibly. The fastest and best help you can get the better able you are to manage the pain yourself. Throughout the examination he was incredibly informative about the specific reason behind each pain and discomfort I felt and how it stemmed from my injury and how we are going to fix it. I was referred to Dr. John Michels by my Primary PhysicianDr. Michelle Ho (who is AMAZING!) In spite of 3 neck surgeries, I continued to have chronic pain in my arms, back, and compounded the severity of my migraines. I am talking about pain almost EVERY single day... AND... Dr. Michels ran several tests... etc... Then, he tried an injection to see if I had any relief, which I did. So, he performed Radio Frequency Ablation on the right side of my neck - This is a minimally invasive procedure that destroys the nerve fibers carrying pain signals to the brain! Since I felt so much relief on my right sight, I had the same procedure done, on my left side. I can’t tell you, how thankful I am, to Dr. Michels. I have been to so many Specialists and Surgeons in 3 different states, and have never been given this option. I highly recommend Dr. John Michels!

Dr. John Michels, I really don't know where to start. He's probably the most down to earth Physician I have ever met. Will go out of his way to make whatever pain you feel and find a solution to your issue. As for myself after being Injured in Iraq, I had a Spinal Cord Neuromodulation Device implanted in my Spine from T-7 Down. Which helped me be more Mobile and to be in less pain when I walked and pain in my legs after my Spine beinging broken, and was and am a Spinal Cord Injury Troop. I was told in March of 2010 that sooner or later what was messed up down below would work it's way up. Eight and a half years later is what led me to be on the search for someone that could understand what I was feeling. I was having to get Steroid Shots in my neck every 6 months, my eyes getting weak, loosing feeling in both my arms. All any Physicians that I would see would just prescribe more drugs. I refused to be put back on Narcotics ever again. As I was on 6 pages of Narcotics Legally, and can't hardly give an account of my life for over 5 years. When I met Dr. Michels and explained to him what was going on, he suggested a trial unit in my upper spinal area. At the time of the trial, all the pain that was between my shoulders went away, my Migraines were gone, and my arms stopped going numb. Now for this reason I am now on less Medications, my eye sight has even improved. I don't expect to be jumping out of planes or running 10 miles a morning like I was before my injury, but I'm so Thankful that this Doctor does not try to play God, or Drug you out of your mind, but I know beyond a Doubt this Doctor Prays before every surgery he does and I know he ask God to Guide his mind and hands to do with the God given talent he's been Granted to help other's to be as pain free as he earthly can. I will say to anyone that does not think the Medical approach he uses doesn't work hasn't been in enough pain to try anything to get some relief except drugs. There are better ways to handle pain most of the time than Drugs, For that Reason, Dr. Michels is my Top Pick of any Pain Medical Doctor that I have ever met, I trust him and his knowledge and trust me I have seen many since my date of injury Sept. 17th, 2007. There has not been a Physician that has ever treated me that done nothing but send me home with more pills. I told Dr. Michels right up front if more meds was his idea of helping me be pain free I was at the wrong doctor, because I refuse to take another Narcotic even if I were dying. Even after having the procedure done I refused anything for Pain. Within 2 days of my Procedure No More Migraines, No more Numb arms, I could lift my arms over my head, and no knots between my shoulder blades, and my eye site even improved. So Please for the Skeptics out there, let there be no doubt in your mind the last thing Dr. Michels wants to do just for the heck of it is cut on you, or if anyone of you think it's just about the Money, That is so far from the truth that it isn't even funny. So Thank God for who you are Dr. Michels and what you stand for, and for St. Judes/ Abbott who provides these devices to help you help make a difference in people like me and my life. I am not so tired from pain any more that I can't enjoy my Children and My Wife, and just great old family fun. Your Practice has made my whole world easier to live with on a Daily Basis. Blessings to You and Your Staff for helping me get a piece of my life back. After being caught in a RPG Blast, I think I know the true meaning of Pain. After my last surgery with Dr. Michels, within less than 60 seconds Dr. Michels had returned my call, and actually help me resolve my issue right over the phone. I have NEVER had a issue reaching Dr. Michels. I promise you after being Medivaced out of War Zone, I can tell you I've seen Pain, I can also say Dr. Michels has been the ONLY Physician that has helped me get my pain Level below a "3" on a normal scale of Pain. Dr Michels talked with my husband and me about an outpatient procedure that might numb the nerves that were causing me so much pain.
