My mom lived with me in Dallas, GA and for three years was a patient of Wellstar Oncology as she waited for her MDS to become “more serious”. Finally, platelets began dropping and hemoglobin started to fall. They started treatment with Vidaza and continued three treatments but stopped due to platelets dropping into single digits. Infusions were required and it seemed, reluctantly, they gave them but didn’t offer much hope. In July 2018, her oncologist told me she had 2-3 weeks to live and put her on Hospice. The Hospice nurse came for their evaluation and after consulting with the Hospice doctor, suggested we get a second opinion. We contacted Emory in Atlanta, and they took her and offered a clinical trial (the only one they had for MDS) and began workup for it. One problem, only 50% of participants would receive the treatment and they couldn’t promise if she would get treatment or placebo. The clinical trial director suggested for me to visit the clinical trials government website as there were many other treatments for MDS and form of Leukemia, and to seek if one in another location might work.
I did this and found MD Anderson Cancer Institute in Houston, TX and Dr Garcia-Manero. I called his intake team and they went over my mom’s history and we had her records sent. Five days later, mom was sitting with Dr “GM” as she was accepted into his team. He had 49 clinical trials just for MDS! They started her on one, it was too strong for her system, and moved to another one. January 1, she was declared as entering into the stage of remission after three treatments! Mom went from her Oncologist, Dr Long, with Wellstar Paulding Hospital sending her to Hospice in July 2018 to entering remission in January 2019 with Dr Garcia-Manero at MD Anderson.
We were so happy she chose to try one more time.
