I am so very disappointed in the level of care my mom has received here. We have been shuffled around by different doctors since May trying to find an answer to her issues. That is a whole other tangent in itself- but here goes about Dr. Carnes, his office and his staff. The office waiting room is probably the most depressing waiting room I've encountered. Might have been decent in 1988...stains all over the carpet, country music blaring, flouresecent lighting... just plain depressing.
My mother's appointment was scheduled at 1:30. We were not called back until 3:15. We then had to wait another 30 minutes before doctor saw us. This was unacceptable and we almost just left after waiting over 2 hours. The nurse was curt at best. No pleasantries exchanged... rapidly went through my mother's family history and left. Didn't even make eye contact with us. No hello...no nothing. No bedside manner.
The doctor finally saw us and I felt he did a through examination. He said he wasn't sure what was going on with my mom but mentioned ALS as a possibility. My mouth dropped and I asked him again if he thought it was that...he said no...but a possibility. He said other disease also mimic ALS. He assured us he would get with her doctors and read over the test results, not sure why those weren't already there, and for us to call back the following Wednesday after he'd had time to analyze reports and speak with her internist and neurosurgeon. Our lives were in limbo waiting for Wednesday. Waiting for answers. My mom called three times before speaking with someone and they said she had no idea what she was talking about and would ask Dr. Carnes and get back with her. We heard nothing. Then on Thuraday I forced my mom to call again and the receptionist acted like my mother was an idiot and said," Dr. Rambo (the neurosurgeon) is out this week so that is WHY we haven't been able to tell you anything. I mean really? Could this not have been communicated earlier? We are going to MUSC. His staff is rude. The practice is antiquated. No one cares about the human sitting in front of them.
I also asked Dr. Carnes if he thought acupuncture could help my mother in conjunction with whatever he prescribes...he said, " acupuncture is merely a placebo." We are so scared and no one seems to care....we had high hopes for Dr. Carnes...
