After 2 1/2 years of seeing several Neurologist for dabiltating head pain and as many misdiagnosis with subscriptions for anti seizure medication. I was fortunate to meet Dr Berchal who upon my initial visit had correctly diagnosed my condition in 15 minutes of talking with me. He did not even want to view any of the many brain scans I acquired. He said I have level 7 the worst in a condition nick named suicide disease " Tri Geminal Neuralga " He said 50% chance of death and cure... I hesitated briefly and asked when the surgery could happen? Within 5 days I was off the table and have never looked back. This was eight years ago and I am thankful everyday for what he did for me and my family. I am sure I would not be here today with out having the fortune to have the best possible professional in the country attend to me. Head ache free, Kelman

He is the best surgeon you could ever ask for he has gave me life back and my seizures are so much better today than as a child.

He is an excellent surgeon. He tells it like it is and even if he holds back a bit to let us see the whole picture, I know I can count on him for the truth. He is part of a team that makes me secure knowing that everything that can be done will be.

i am a rehab physical therapist with a patient, on Medicaid, who desperately needed attention from his previous neurosurgeon. After a year of frustration i called Dr Burcheil's office and within a matter of weeks the patient had an appt. with neurosurgery at OHSU.. Bedridden for over 3 years we are now helping this fellow stand and his plan is to live with his daughter. Quite literally OHSU saved this man's life. No greater applause Dr. Burchiel.. I am so very grateful. -------

I've tried OHSU neuro multiple times. In general it feels like they think of their clinical work (non-research) as a nuisance. I spent a lot of time and money seeking out someone who actually understands a rare condition, only to show up to have a student fill in for the surgeon I was scheduled with. I'm sure the student was fine, but the dishonesty (bait and switch) is not. If you are a patient, I would put OHSU (neuro, particularly) at the bottom of your list. I feel like they are structured for research, and clinical work (real patients) are an afterthought. I did address this with them and they blew me off.

Dr. Burchiel is my hero! I have trigeminal neurolgia. This is a rare disease which is known as the most painful condition known to medical science. I was blessed to discover Dr. Burchiel is an expert in this area and has spent his life, since medical school, researcher this issue and treating it. I was losing my life slowly by torturing degrees. The disease was not responding to medicine and I was bedridden. My mom sent a desperate email to OHSU and it landed in his assistant's email box. From the first moment of contact, I felt heard. I met with him in June of 2017 and while at first he was a bit standoffish, he quickly warmed up and assured me there was something he could do. He placed a friendly wager with my daughter (she is 19 and was teasing him) about my diagnosis. Said he had been doing this for so long he knew without seeing the MRI. A month later, an MRI showed Dr. B was right on target. He assured me I would get my life back. On August 31st, I had brain surgery - the MVD. I was the last one scheduled and the one before me went four hours longer. Dr. B worked until 1 a.m. on me. I woke up pain free! Dr. Burchiel is a rockstar and I genuinely believe I own him more than I could ever repay. He gave me my life back.

Not my own experience but when he was my mom's neurologist & my mom had head surgery, his team crushed my mom's skull & they didn't handle it the way they should've. My mom never finished suing him because she couldn't afford it due to having to get more surgeries to fix the damage. He has no malpractice recorded because of that. My mom still leaks spinal fluid to this day and has some pretty severe head problems. Any time we have had to pass OHSU (in the car) she'll tense up and start crying. The PTSD is that bad. Our family has been forever changed since that has happened. She can't be as active as she used to and I know she feels bad about that because she has grandchildren. I realize everyone makes mistakes and these things happen, the only thing that is unforgivable is the way that they handled it.
