Dr Karen Palmer is part of this practice. She personally is a fantastic doctor and I’d highly recommend her. I’ve been her patient for 6years. Unfortunately, since merger, patients now have to go through the poorly managed and sometimes rude Appledore Portsmouth office to get to her. After being her patient for 6 years, Since Appledore took over I find difficulty to get well visits made within reasonable timeframes, pass messages along to Dr Palmer or her nurses and schedule sick visits. The customer service of the management office has become so poor my husband and I have considered leaving the practice. the only reason we’ve stayed is in hopes of managerial improvements because we love Dr Palmer as our PCP. Unfortunately, improvements have been more than slow.

When I arrived for my appointment, I was greeted by a warm and friendly staff, and after a short wait, I met Sara. She immediately made me feel comfortable. She was upbeat and friendly and asked all the right questions. I know that I was blessed with having chosen Portsmouth Family Practice, and blessed because Sara is a most qualified member of their medical staff. I drove home knowing my research had paid off.

Dr. Barlow is an excellent physician. A year ago he suggested I see a cardiologist about an irregular heartbeat. A few days later I had some symptoms of a heart attack at 4 am. I would have ignored those symptoms if Dr. Barlow hadn't noticed the irregular heartbeat. I went to the ER and they said I had had a heat attack. Recently I had my annual wellness visit. Dr. Barlow was thorough and helpful with explanations. I recommend him strongly.

Dr. Karen Palmer takes time to listen and ask pertinent questions. I appreciate her honesty and pleasant demeanor. The doctors and staff that originally made up this practice were wonderful. But since the acquisition by a larger group, the office has lost touch with the patients and their concerns. Take for example a lengthy survey I completed for Appledore that went completely unanswered, even though I asked that they contact me. Further, the doctors have so many patients, it is frankly impossible to get a near term appointment even if you are currently engaged with your doctor on addressing a problem.

My primary care physician is Anping Han, M.D. I am new to the area and had an initial appointment this month. First, let me say that the practice is very clean and well put-together. The front desk staff is great, and the nurses are cheerful and competent. My doctor was very attentive and kind. He patiently listened to all of my concerns and gave me referrals where appropriate. Most docs are too short on time these days, but Dr. Han never made me feel rushed, uncomfortable, or burdensome. I am so far very thankful to have him as my doctor, and I look forward to my next appointment!

Really needing relief from heavy flu symptoms, I called the office, and was given the last appointment of the day on a Friday. Regardless of the late time of day, I was carefully given the full time needed for diagnosis, medication, prognosis, and instructions for re-contact should I have need to do so. No hurrying me out the door. Additionally, that Friday appointment was followed up by a personal phone call from the physician the following Monday. How good does it get?

Susan Murray is my primary care doctor and I believe she's a really good doctor. She's caring and seems genuinely concerned for my well-being. It just seems that over the last few years time is not on her side and is inundated with more patients and less time for the patient. I'm not happy with the new building they moved into. Don't get me wrong, the extra space seems great, but I feel like I am more at a bank rather than a doctor's office. The layout and the feeling is that I'm in for a bank loan rather than in to have someone help me. It also seems that there are more administrator workers there, but you are constantly being put on hold. E.G. I called today to either speak to a nurse or leave a message. I was on hold for 15 minutes then decided to call on my other phone while still on hold and the same woman answered the phone. I asked why did you keep me on hold for so long? She claimed that it wasn't her that answered the phone when in fact it was her. My point is that the way they handle the phone situation is way below average. At least before they would give you the option of calling you back. Now I feel like I am on hold constantly. I also can't even begin to explain my disappointment with how this brand new building was built and did such minimal work for people with disabilities in a wheelchair. That's for another whole review.

I needed to find a new PC physician. My onchologist referred me to Lauren McMullen and I’m so greatful she did because she is the best PC I’ve ever had. I’ve seen Lauren on many occasions for different injuries and ailments. She is so positive and really listens to your issues. She is understanding, kind and caring. She comes up with great health ideas and gives the best advice/remedies to make a person feel better and get on the road to recovery. The kind of PC that everyone should have. The new office space on PEASE is very nice but I miss the personal touch of the smaller office in Newington. I called to make an appointment at the new office and got a recording and waited for an actual person for 10 minutes. I got to my appointment at the new facility five minutes late (my bad) but then proceeded to wait for an additional 5 minutes in line to check in (which didn't bother me but...). The receptionist then said she had to check if I could still keep my appointment because I was late. I pointed out that 5 of those late 10 minutes were just spent standing in line, in front of her. She lacked emotion and just walked away. I wasn't meeting with a doctor on this appointment and fortunately, I was able to still meet with the nurse practitioner but the whole experience from calling to make the appointment to the actual checking in was very formal and cold. Perhaps this is what health care is coming to.

Dr. Harker has really made me appreciate having a PCP that will advocate, listen and work with you to improve your health, not because it is his job but because he actually cares. He listens to his patients and genuinely cares. You can tell when someone cares and that is without a doubt Dr. Harker. He works with me and doesn’t rush to a decision, even if I want to. I have been with this practice for 25 years. The only negative I have is the high turnover of staff. The good thing is that the new physicians that I see have all been great. I am currently seeing Dr. Marvinsmith who is an exceptional physician. She makes you feel like your her only patient with the attention she gives you. She is patient, thorough and kind. She researches and follows up on any questions or concerns you may have. The receptionists are very nice and welcoming. My daughter and I have both been able to be seen quickly whenever we had a medical concern. In all I am very satisfied with the care I receive.

Dr. Harker has really made me appreciate having a PCP that will advocate, listen and work with you to improve your health, not because it is his job but because he actually cares. I am beyond unimpressed with the operations of this practice. Dr. Marvinsmith is wonderful but the practice operations is a mess. As a new patient, I was supposed to pick up a Rx from my pharmacy. I show up two days after the appointment and no script was submitted. I know they have correct pharmacy on file because they verified it during my visit. Then when you call after hours and are directed to their answering service, the service won’t take a message for the office. I was told that the practice “does not accept after hour messages” and that I need to call the practice the next day (in all my copious spare time). Why bother having a service. If you want to speak to an after hours provider you need to call a separate phone number and speak to a third party nursing group. I don’t know, prior to this I’ve been using an urgent care walk in facility for my medical needs and found they are they easily accessible, pleasant to work with, and my scripts are submitted in a timely manner. Starting to question my decision to change. Dr. Marvinsmith is the only reason I’m continuing down this path.

I am happy with my doctor, just not the practice. Since when does the time of the doctor/practice count for more than my own time? The door needs to swing both ways. It was a five minute med check, not a sick appt or a physical. Five minutes. Not happy.

Dr. Han lost all credibility when he said "I can google that" after I asked a pretty common medical question that any doctor should of been able to answer. I was there for a specimen test and it took him 2 weeks to call be back after the results were already in, not to mention he tried calling me from his cell phone at 10pm on a weeknight! After all that it turned out he couldn't even understand the test results and he had to refer me to another doctor! I suppose I should be happy that he was honest about not being able to understand the results, but my god, that was a terrible experience!

I think Sara Castantini is an excellent provider, but the rest of the staff needs some help. I saw Sara last Friday and she noted that if my condition doesn't improve that I could call over the weekend and they would issue oral antibiotics. I didn't think I'd need it, but turns out I did and so I called. I was out of state on vacation, and was told by the doctor on call (Luchsinger I believe, through the answering service- she wouldn't even call me directly) that she didn't feel comfortable without seeing me and I should just go to a walk in clinic. With two little kids, on a 3 day vacation 600 miles from home, sure no problem, and I'm highly contagious. Thanks for keeping Sara's word, great teamwork everyone. And then i answered the online survey with this info, the office manager Denise called me only to leave an insulting message saying she wasn't sure why I deserved preferential treatment, and when I called back she wasn't available. Not wasting another minute of my time - Looking for a new doctor and team right now.
