I used the ER at this small hospital for a dislocated shoulder on a Saturday about 3 PM. I only used the ER, so I can't comment about other services offered at this hospital. The nursing staff was friendly but folks need to understand that this hospital provides limited services, like an urgent care center would provide in a larger city. A few things that I noticed:
1. There is no radiologist on staff here, so the Xray tech sends off images to be read elsewhere, which took an hour in my case. I'm not opposed to images being read elsewhere, but an hour is a long time to wait when you're in pain.
2. This is no MD anesthesiologist here anymore. They have an nurse anesthetist. If a patient needs anesthesia outside of normal Monday-Friday hours, they have to page one of the nurse anesthetists, who took 45 minutes to arrive. If anesthesia is done incorrectly, you can really damage the patient, so I would have preferred a higher level provider than RN. However, I was given the choice of either being transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock hospital (2 hours+ away), or going with the nurse. I chose the nurse as I didn't want a 2+ hour delay.
3. The attending ER doctor informed me that he wasn't comfortable trying to reset my shoulder more than once. If he wasn't successful on the first attempt, he was planning to transfer me to Dartmouth Hitchcock, as they have more resources.
4. Nobody goes to the hospital for the great food, but Saturday dinner choice was either either turkey or ham sandwiches on white bread. So much for nutrition!
5. This is a small facility, and limited staff gets overwhelmed quickly. If two patients arrive at the same time as happened during my stay on a Saturday afternoon, they seem to have difficulty managing several patients at the same time. There were only 2 RNs present when I was there, and they started bickering publicly as to who would get the additional patients.
Summary: Everyone's situation is different, but folks going to this small hospital need to understand that this facility lacks a lot of the specialties and support that larger hospitals have. Like an urgent care facility, they can handle simple things such as a simple sprain. For more complex needs, you may get transferred to a larger facility and you might wonder why you didn't save time by going to the larger facility initially.
