I called this institute yesterday and asked if it was possible for my wife to be seen today, Monday, or Tuesday. I said she has a strange growth that has us concerned, that has recently surfaced, and has recently changed in texture and color. The young lady on the other end nonchalantly stated they have no appointments available for 4 months. The name of their institute starts with "Skin Cancer." I reminded her of that and stated the obvious that if my wife has a melanoma, 4 months is not soon enough to be seen. She wasn't swayed. I then posted my review here with 1 star, expressing my profound disappointment with being turned away. I then looked at some other reviews and noticed the regional director's name and phone number. I then called and left her a message stating what happened and also stating that I would love to hear what she has to say about it. Not long after that, she called me back while I was on another line and left a very conciliatory message which included the fact that she arranged for an appointment for my wife for very early this morning, along with instructions to call back and speak to a certain person to confirm. Unfortunately, by the time I heard the message and called, I got the answering service. This morning , just after my wife and I concluded a business meeting, my phone rang. The woman on the line was the person I had been directed to contact to confirm the previously arranged early morning appointment. I explained that I had called too late last night to confirm a very early morning appointment but she said no problem and scheduled my wife for an early afternoon appointment today. We showed up a half hour early as instructed and from there everything went quite well. From the staff who greeted us upon arrival, to the medical assistant who assisted the doctor, to the doctor who examined my wife, and to the staff that later scheduled her follow up visit for another skin problem the doctor had noticed and prescribed treatment for, everybody was top shelf and excellent. Hopefully the biopsy comes back negative, but in either case, it is a relief to get on top of this sooner rather than later. My wife is a colon cancer survivor. She is alive now 13 years later because it was caught soon enough that surgery and chemotherapy was able to defeat one of the most deadly forms of cancer. We know from that experience how vitally important it is to deal with ANYTHING that may be cancer as soon as possible. We greatly appreciate the attention and treatment my wife received today. They did an outstanding job of coming through for us in the end. The only reason I am not giving a 5th star, is because I believe they should take steps to train the phone staff on a protocol that does not summarily dismiss a new patient who communicates that they are concerned about possible skin cancer, as opposed to someone who is looking for treatment for eczema or some other non potentially life threatening skin problem. Again, we give them 2 thumbs up for the way they came through for us in the end.

Yes they are difficult to get appointments with but that is because they are the BEST. I always feel great after my skin appointment because i know they will find and take care of those little things we miss.

Rhonda Strum has contacted me twice for Excimer Laser follow-up. I am very pleased with her professionalism. I give one star for ADA accessibility. The doors do not have automatic openers. The majority of patients are elderly and need assistance with the door. During my bi-weekly visits 50% of the time I get up and assist patients with the door. I even clipped an article from the People magazine in the lobby. Tony award winner, Stroker, comments What She Wants You to Know About People with a Disability- if you own a store get a ramp “If you want to be accessible, you can be.” Medical Offices MUST be accessible and it is the law under ADA.

I was really glad that Dr. Blackhart instantly recognized the seriousness of my ruptured cyst. He insisted on treating it before I left the office. The procedure was carefully executed and it is healing beautifully. However, he packed the surgical site with material that was coated with iodine. My records indicate that I'm allergic to iodine. Upon removal 2 days later, it stopped burning. Overall though, good medical care, with that one exception.

Long wait time during appointment. However, the actual procedure of extracting a small cyst took less than 12 minutes, and NO painful suffering. I didn't even need pain killers after the 'local' wore off. The Dr. and Nurse were very professional and always made me feel at ease. I still have the stitches, but healing nicely. Also, they called me back a week later to provide results of the biopsy. Great job guys!

Review by Sandy Timmons At my recent appointment with Katie I was disappointed and am asking to be changed to a different provider for my next appointment. I felt rushed and my three concerns I mentioned were pooh-poohed off as nothing. I am estimating about 10 minutes were spent on a full body scan whereas in the past with Sheila, Sheila was much more thorough. One of my concerns was a small growth on my scalp which my hairdresser is not happy about catching her comb on. Katie told me it scales off and regrows and then was off to another area of the exam. Was I asked if I would like it removed anyway? No. I felt my comment to her about my hairdresser's concern was an indication that I would like it removed! But I dropped the subject as I realized Katie was not empathetic about MY concerns. Interestingly, I was initially booked with a different provider after Sheila left but I asked to be changed to Katie after another patient raved to me about how much he liked her! Surely in today's tech age this review company can indicate the correct patient's name who had an appointment! Instead it goes by a last name and my husband was not the recent patient. We do have the same email address.

CONSUMER BEWARE! I had Mohs surgery for Basal Cell cancer in the Carson City office. Left me with a small deep scar on the lower side of my nose. Another one of the doctors at the Reno clinic recommended to me that I get it "lasered". So, I went to the Reno office and let the doctor use as CO2 Laser as she assured me it would take care of the scar. I spend over $200 on that. It created a much bigger hole like scar which is very noticeable and embarrassing. Makeup won't cover it as makeup poles in the hole. The doctor dismissed my concern. She was arrogant. She recommended that I see a plastic surgeon. But, she won't give me a referral. So, I have to pay out of pocket!! I would definitely NOT recommend them. They only care about your money. I will check elsewhere for a new clinic and have to pay for the plastic surgery. This has really set me back. The Sacramento area may have better options as there is more competition.

I was thoroughly disappointed with my visit. I had an appointment at 10 AM. Not only did i sit in a room for 58 minutes to be seen but the doctor walked in and didn’t even EXAMINE my skin. Assistant asked few questions and doctor asked none. Assistant had been there for 3 weeks. YOU ARE KIDDING! Was in and out in 9 minutes. Gave me options to antibiotics for acne without even knowing my skin. No care was even taken. I went in seeking for a professional look at my face because I am in pain. I was treated as a robot. I can’t believe i wait months to be seen and this is what I get. Will not ever be returning to Skin Cancer & Dermatology institute. Highly recommend going somewhere else. Somewhere where they care about you and respect your time.

It took 2 months to get in and when I went in for the appointment they didn't have me scheduled but they did have all my information. The receptionist who waited on me managed to fit me in with the doctor I was there to see but I had to wait an hour. The doctor and his assistant were great. The other reviews seem staged. This place has rude staff. Extremely long booking times (months out) and extremely long service times. My best advice is book this place before you get skin cancer, so when you get to your appointments months later you have a chance to get it all solved in a single visit.

In March I tried to get a quick appointment with my Dermatologist because of a rapidly worsening skin condition. Made appointment with Assistant Lisa Durden, PA-C to get in sooner. She took a look and immediatly called in a Detrmatologist. He called in two more. Took immediate biopsies of three areas. I was diognosed with a rare agressive blood cancer known as BPDCN. Now seeing a well known Oncologist. Without Lisa's experience knowing this was not a normal condition, my treatment would have been delayed significantly. Thank you Lisa.

We reviewed my pathology reports and history and had an in depth conversation which changed the course of my referrals and treatment plan. Very disappointed. I had a biopsy seven weeks ago and have been waiting for a result. Ten days ago, I received a certified letter saying that they cannot contact me. I call immediately and leave message after message with no return call. Finally had my wife wait and speak directly to someone who gave her correct information and change the contact information. The medical group needs to expand and get more office staff to handle their clients. I greatly respect Dr. Laura Hay, as she is very thoughtful and through.

The appointment is not the whole treatment that you are there for and cost would be less if you didn't have to set up a recheck because healing is interrupted by soreness from infection. I bandaged and cared for the surgical area exactly as instructed. They find the skin cancer and make the appointment, surgically remove it and say see you in six months, the stitches will dissolve themselves. Followup appointment would have improved my visit/outcome by checking stitches and finding infection sooner.

I have been going to Reno Dermatology for years and before today I have always given high reviews. I have no complaints about the providers at all, I have seen Rhonda for many years and a couple other providers and have always received excellent care. I have never had an issue with the office staff. I have always been respectful and on time. Today, I was delayed in traffic and was 8 min late to my appointment. Before I arrived I called and let them know I would be approximately 10 min late. I was told, “no problem, we have. A 15 min grace period”. When I arrived 8 min late to my 1050 appointment, I was told by the receptionist who was not wearing a name tag, that my appointment was at 1040, not 1050. I was very polite and showed her my text from them showing my appointment time was in fact at 1050. She seemed very irritated and went to the back of the office and when she returned she said that I could not be seen. I was astounded. I told her I had called and she said, “ well, no one told us.” I told her I was well within the 15 min grace period, I had taken the day off work for this important appointment, and that I had just driven from Susanville for it. She just said all she could do was reschedule me since the provider was “ running late already and has 40 pt’s to be seen”. I asked politely to speak to the office manager and was informed she was in a mtg and would not be available for 2 hours. I took a card and left. I spoke with the manager about an hour later who informed me again, that there is nothing they can do. I cannot believe that under these circumstances I was denied my appointment and told I would have to reschedule. After posting this I was contacted by both Rhonda and Stephanie Collins. Both were not aware of this until the next day. After speaking with them both, I feel this was just the result of a few peoples actions and does not reflect the on the overall office staff or company as a whole. They have made every effort to make this right and have assured me this should not have happened and will not happen again. And, as I mentioned originally, this was the ONLY negative encounter after years of service.

Just horrible. I had an appointment at 830... i showed up early to be seen, and ive been here for nearly 45 mins. This is horrendous, when people show up after you get seen, and you sti need to wait. I made qn appointment for a reason, not to wait another 20 mins ontop pf when my appointment was. If i wanted to be seen at 9am i would have made a 9 am appointment. This place really sucks. Avoid this place. Apparently, now they are 15 mins late so, guess what... my 830am appointment is now a 915 appointment, and i left my work at 745... this appointment is now going to take me 2 hours. What a joke, all they could say is things happen. Screw this place. What a jole
