This is a rather long review, so please take the time to read it. My moms primary care doctor sent her to see Dr. Samlaska after we had a bad experience with her thumb. Something popped up on her thumb after she nicked it in the kitchen with a pairing knife. The wound just kept getting bigger and bigger. after 3 rounds of antibodics she was sent to a hand specialist. This dr. looks at it and said he needs to cut the whole area out (the size of a quarter at this point). So of course we followed his direction and a few days later she had it cut out. Then we received a report that the lab work came back as cancer. She was sent for a whole series of test and 21 treatments of radiation.. Her thumb looked like it had been set on fire. It was a terrible traumatic experience for my 70 yr old mom. 3 weeks later a new wound opened up on her finger right beside the thumb. She was distraught. She and I both thought, here we go again.. When she went to the her pc about it she asked to see another dr because the hand doctor was negative, not very concerned with his patience understanding of what was going on. We just didn't like him. The pc sent her to Dr. Samlaska but told her to call the hand doctor if need be. Not to let it go too long. We immediately made an appt. From the moment my mom and I walked thru the door of his office, his staff and Dr. Samlaska treated us with respect, concern and determination to get my moms hand fixed. We were not the easiest people because we had already been so traumatized by the thumb. He insisted that her finger was NOT cancer and we insisted it looked and acted EXACTLY the same way the thumb did. So we were sure he just didn't understand because he stood strong on the "ITS NOT CANCER" theory. He gave her anitibodtics and we came back a week later and the finger was worse. He took a culture to find out what exactly we were dealing with.. put her on another antiboditic and back in a week.. The finger was again, worse and the culture came back negative. NO INFECTION !! He said, I think this is "pyoderma gangersun".. I made him right it down.. By then we were fed up.. But he said I am gonna give you a steriod and a prescription for a topical to put on it.. Told us exactly how to clean it and care for it.. I called my sister to confirm. (she is alittle more familiar with the medical stuff) we were debating, at this point, to return to the hand doctor. My sister said, no way, stay with the dermatologist, give him a chance, this is his expertise and you just need to stay away from the hand doctor, so after much conversation, my mom cancelled her appoint with the hand dr. One week later we were back in the office and yes, you guessed it, THE FINGER WAS BETTER!! he was right !! Dr. Samlaska was more excited than my mom and I were !! From that moment forward, we have been fans for the rest of our life. He is an excellent DOCTOR who genuinely cares about his patients.. That was 2 weeks ago, he put her on strong steriods and we saw him today, and her thumb is almost like new. It is amazing to me what he has done for my mom. As I read in previous reviews. It's all true, his office is beautiful, clean, well maintained, you never wait for more than 5 minutes, always on time, very pleasant and professional. I would recommend him to EVERYONE !! I am so thankful we have found him. My moms problem is some what rare and we are now thinking that is what was on her thumb originally and no one took the time to figure it out. Thank you Dr. Samlaska, my mom and I are grateful to you and your staff for giving her the best care possible. I can't even begin to tell you how good it feels to find an office to still believes in being doctors. You are such an asset to this community and I hope anyone in need of a great dermatologist will come straight to you.
