Doctor Hugh Calkins is a National Treasure. One year ago; Dr. Calkins and his medical team gave me back my life through world class cardiac surgery. Due in large part to his outstanding knowledge of the heart and pioneering techniques to repair it with minimally invasive surgery, I am leading a physically active professional work and sports life again. This was not possible for me with a resting heart rate as low as 38 BPM and an electrocardiogram that appeared as a random jamming interference signal. Throughout the one year run up to my surgery at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institute, Doctor Calkins took a measured approach, prescribing medication and lifestyle changes first; and closely monitoring me throughout the process. He listened and paid careful attention to my complicated medical history. His bedside manner was outstanding. Here was a world class surgeon and researcher spending the time with me to fully understand the conditions he would encounter should surgery be necessary. He was cheerful and kind throughout this process, ensuring that I understood the potential outcomes post surgery. The fact that he is a world class researcher was a major benefit to my learning all about the atrial fibrillation condition. The AF Consensus Paper he shared with me helped instill confidence in the surgical approach. On the day of my surgery, I felt that I was in the Best of Hands in the Right Hospital. During the run up and post surgery assessment, I received outstanding care from Dr. Calkins' Nursing and Administrative Team. Having proudly served our Nation for twenty five years in the US Navy, I have encountered great leaders who are driven to achieve excellence. Now I can add Doctor Hugh Calkins to that list.
