One month after surgery I was pain free and pretty much resuming normal activities. I was still experiencing some numbness and difficulty swallowing. Three months post-op my numbness is almost gone and my swallowing is improving. Another doctor gave me 50 / 50 odds of improving my condition through surgery. Dr. Johans quoted odds in the 98% range and was happy to share his track record to back his claim. He is justifiably proud of his record of success and works very hard to maintain his stats. Definitely a perfectionist. Simply put, DR. JOHANS GAVE ME MY LIFE BACK. Prior to surgery I was in such severe pain that I was flat on my back for weeks. Post-operative pain was worse than I expected for a couple of weeks, but that's because I took very few of the prescribed pain pills. My research lead me to believe that opioid and narcotic pain pills are an addiction waiting to happen. Three weeks after the surgery I was nearly pain free. I also need to mention that Kelly, Dr. Johans' office assistant, was ABSOLUTELY AWESOME. Very responsive! I think all my calls were returned within the hour and she had all the right answers. I am very pleased with the services provided by Dr. Johans and associates.

I saw Dr. Johans for a herniated and protruding disc and pinched nerve. He literally gave me my life back with the surgery he performed. I was in excruciating pain for months and tried many avenues to try to fix my back issues but ultimately decided to move forward with surgery because I had no quality of life left. He literally delayed his month long vacation to perform my surgery without ever having met me but heard my story and felt it was urgent and wanted to provide me with help. He made me feel so incredibly comfortable and supported, but also was very straightforward. I am blown away by his self sacrifice to help a total stranger. His PA Meghan was just as wonderful. Dr. Johans knew exactly what was wrong in the first five minutes of my exam. I was in so much pain and had numbness/loss of strength in my arm. He and his staff worked tirelessly to get me in for an MRI which confirmed his diagnosis and to surgery which took away my severe pain. Surgery went the best you could hope for- I’m on day 3 afterwards and feeling great, most of the feeling is back (the rest is expected to come back in time). I began suffering from severe pain in my arm and shoulder in early Nov 2018. After physical therapy and pain management did not help, I received an MRI that showed stenosis in my cervical spine. Online research provided little optimism for recovery/rehabilitation. As an avid runner, this was very disconcerting. I began to lose feeling in my arm and right hand, as well as the ability to do pushups. I met with Dr johans and his staff in late December. At this appointment they explained my MRI to me, and told me what the options for treatment were. They also answered all my questions realistically. 1. Yes ACDF would stop the damage from getting worse. 2. Without surgery it would get worse undoubtedly. 3. I may or may not get what use of my arm/shoulder/hand back. 4. I was a good candidate for surgery, and that I was young enough (42) that there was a strong possibility that I would regain all function. I was scheduled for ACDF within a week. The surgery itself was great. They used Treasure Valley Hospital for the procedure. I checked in the morning of, and was out the following afternoon. The staff there was great at taking care of me and my family as well. They allowed my wife and family to spend as much time with me as I wanted, and made sure everyone was taken care of. (even opening up the kitchen late when my daughter was hungry). Post surgery - Dr Johans and his staff have listened to my concerns and helped ensure recovery success. My employer requires that I meet certain physical ability standards, and I was concerned that I may not be able to perform the required duties anymore. Dr Johans encouraged immediate physical therapy and supported my recovery. I am now five months post op, and can say that I have a full and complete recovery of my arm and shoulder. I am able to run again and notice none of the pain/numbness that I experienced before the surgery. The only reminder I have at all is a scar on my neck (they did a great job lining it up with my tendon, you can hardly see it) and after vigorous exercise, my neck is sometime stiff. I am very happy with the outcome. I would suggest to anyone experiencing stenosis, to see if you are a candidate for surgery.

Dr. Timothy Johans, MD is the Best. Went in for consultation on 06/14/2018 about results from MRI. Had major rupture in lower lumbar. Losing strength in left leg from nerve damage caused by rupture. Surgery for Lumbar Radiculopathy scheduled for the next morning 06/15/2018. Outpatient surgery at Treasure Valley Hospital. Operation went very well. Took less then one hour. Went home that night. I had carpal tunnel surgery this past January, and immediately after surgery I was relieved of all my symptoms. This past August, I had extreme pain in my left shoulder down to my fingers. With a lot of health problems I needed a complicated Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion that needed to be done while I was on blood thinners and having progressed osteoporosis . I was worried and thought I might need to leave the state to get the best care, and then I found Dr. Johans. This man is a miracle worker. He saw how much pain I was in, explained exactly what I needed, and what I did not need, and scheduled surgery immediately. He took the time to call me at home to more questions, and then met with my family before surgery to answer even more questions. He is kind, compassionate and incredibly skilled. I have a tiny scar nestled in a wrinkle in my neck, another small one from the needed sternum bone graft. I awoke from the 45 minute surgery painless (from the first time in 6 weeks). I was discharged after one day, and I don't even need painkillers. I am so grateful for having this caliber of skilled surgeon in the Boise, Idaho area. No need to travel for the best of the best. I have had to undergo a lot of surgery, (from Johns Hopkins in MD to UCLA in CA) and I am so grateful to have found the best right here in my home town. Prior to meeting Dr. Johans, I went thru 6 weeks of incredible nerve pain, a myriad of doctors, chiropractor, physical therapy, spinal injections and a pharmacy of opioids that were never going to fix my problem. I am so blessed to be painfree, thank you Dr. Johans, I only wish I had found you sooner! PS: From the day I met him, his skilled PA and wonderful office staff performed miracles to schedule the surgery, obtain insurance approval and provide complete instructions, for a worry free procedure just 5 days later. There are not enough positive superlatives for me to describe how I feel about Dr. Timothy Johans. His skill as a neurosurgeon is far above outstanding. 3 months ago he performed a cervical discectomy surgery on my daughter's neck. Four vertebrae in her neck were almost beyond repair but he was able to attach a metal plate to align and stabilize them when the odds were not good it could be done. The MRI taken 3 months after the surgery showed a total success. Not only does he possess remarkable skill as a neurosurgeon, but the plastic surgery he did was so great that there is absolutely no visible sign of a scar on her neck. None. Dr. Johans communications skills are the best. His explanation of his diagnosis, as well as all the procedures to be taken for the surgery, the post-op details and follow up were extraordinaire. He was very direct, concise and totally thorough covering every minute detail. Everything presented was so easy to understand and so well covered it left very little to ask questions about. So many times I have been consulted and advised by different doctors that my head was spinning when they finished with their long and technical jargon that was difficult to keep up with. Not so with Dr. Johans. Again, he is a truly outstanding communicator and is very personal with both patient and family. His staff is also first-rate. Kelli at the front desk is by far the most helpful and personable person I have ever encountered in my many years of dealing with medical personnel. Her interest in the patient is very sincere. His assistant, Megan, was a mirror image of Dr. Johan himself, a true professional. In my humble opinion, Dr. Johan is a saint.

I had a herniated disc that if I were to get hit in the face my disc would have blown out. I’m an avid outdoor person and used to work out like no tomorrow and I haven’t been able to work out in a few years. Now I can. If you have ANY neck, spine, or head pain this is the Dr you want. Every hospital I went to kept telling me about awesome of a surgeon this guy is. Every doctor spoke so highly of him it calmed my nerves so much to know I was in good hands. I’ve seen every Doctor from knee doctors, shoulder specialists, other neurologists and they all looked up to Dr Johans. I even had other pains not related to what he was seeing me for and he still checked that out for me and gave me answers on the spot. Dr Johans was honest and told me if I were his family he would have his own family get this surgery done. I was anxious about getting surgery, honestly I was scared. But they took my every phone call. They let me come into the office as many times as I needed. They took care of me and every concern I had. They weren’t rushing me to get the surgery done. They were helping me thru my problem. They explain everything so well. They calmed me down. If you need to get back outside enjoying the outdoors or back in the gym, he’s your Dr. Even if you don’t workout if you have any pain he’s your guy and he will take care of you like you are his own family. My surgery went well it’s been 30 days and I feel better than ever!

Dr. Johan's bedside manner is neither soft nor patronizing, but I would liken his communication style as more blunt than rude. I recently (this weekend) had a very serious L4-L5 disc surgery that involved both sides of the disc and involved a very complicated removal of several impingements on the nerves. This was an urgent, emergency surgery for which Dr. Johans was the on-call neurosurgeon. I felt like he provided a thorough explanation of my MRI and gave me the necessary information to make several tough decisions about the surgery. I didn't need to take any pain medication for the first 10 hours following the surgery and very little over the following 24 hours. Although it is very soon after the surgery my sciatica-related pain has gone from 9 to 1. Thus far, I am very happy with the results of the surgery Dr. Johans performed on my lower back.

When I was 17 years old I was in a bad car accident. I had broken 6 ribs on my left aside and had a collapsed lung. It took a lot of time to recover. I was active in sports and cheerleading in high school as a teenager. I tried going back to normal activity after the accident but I was in pain and eventually it was unbearable. Over a year later I was lucky enough to get an appointment with Dr. Johans. He ended up preforming surgery on my back and I was back to feeling great and working out within a few months of surgery. Fast forward 20 years and I unfortunately, was involved in a severe car accident, being side swiped by a large suv. Fighting with the at fault party’s insurance and getting into a proper surgeon took time. I had severe numbing, tingling, loss of strength and back and leg pain on the right side of my body. I was trying to work, be a wife and mom while taking pain pills just to get through the pain each day. I knew something was very wrong. The doctors and insurance companies all had surgeons they referred me to however I request Dr. Johans and would not settle for anyone but him! I trust Dr. Johans and his staff. I knew from experience what a wonderful person and what an amazing surgeon Dr. Johans is. The staff and Dr. Johans treated me so well and are friendly, kind, helpful and above all understanding. Dr. Johans has treated my cousin that suffered a traumatic brain injury. My whole family is grateful for his experience, knowledge and work ethic! I had neck surgery Little over 3 months ago within 3 days I was doing work around the house I wore the neck brace while I was out doing things for me it was a really good recovery the team there was awesome. The pain was very very minimum I didn't even have to use the pain medication the scars healed up very very nice I don't have the muscle spasms in my Nic or in my right shoulder no more I could feel my famous I've battled with other doctors and had Several injections in the neck and lower back they did not work other doctors tried to use narcotic pain medications to help me it does seem to not work for is doing alternative treatments for. My wife was involved in a car accident and she was C in a choir practice over here in Burley Idaho . His name is Linn Hansen he looked at my MR I's from the previous doctors and he told me you need to go see a specialist and i lets when i met doctor Timothy and his staff very wonderful people I've set down a have nice visits with the doctor and his staff I'm ready for him to go after my lower back if he can make my Nick in my right arm feel so good and wonderful we could fix my lower back i give him a 5 star rating he doesn't do this for the money he does this because he likes Sing people benefit from his work that God gave him I give him a 5 star rating and his staff. I saw Dr. Johans as a last option; my issues are complicated and I have seen other doctors who have told me they couldn't do anything. He was honest, researched my particular rare disease, and talked to me, not at me. He told me that he could operate, and while it has been very successful with others, because of my particular situation, he couldn't guarantee it would work or how much pain it would relieve. He told me that most likely it would not make anything worse, and I was in so much pain, that this was a ringing endorsement. The surgery went well, and he was very attentive and helpful. After the second post-surgery appointment, he does expect you to call him rather than 'wasting your time and money' with appointments when nothing is wrong. Much of your interaction is with his very efficient and friendly office staff and talented surgical assistants. I would use him in a heartbeat if God forbid I should need him again.

My experience overall experience was very amazing. From the moment I made the first appointment to the last checkup appointment. Dr. Johans office got me in within a couple days of calling to schedule my appointment. Kelly was so sweet on the phone and in person.Then at the appointment Dr. Johans and his PA saw how much pain I was in and got me in for surgery the very next day. It was quite a shock to get in that fast. Both my mother in law and my dad had already had the same surgery from Dr. Johans and their surgeries had been successful. The nurses and CNAs who checked me for surgery were all very kind, professional and reassuring. Whenever I was poked for blood or poked to put the IV in they got it the first try and with ease and without unnecessary pain. I absolutely loved the nurse who cared for me. She was so compassionate and caring. She also helped make my husband comfortable getting him pillows, blanket and showing him how to fold the chair into a bed. I was very impressed with her. The only recommendation or thing I might change would be that I was located in the old portion of the hospital and the rooms did not have a sink for the nurses to wash their hands. They had to go use the bathroom but that might just have been my weird personal preference. I would completely recommend Dr Johans to anyone. He is very professional, quick and explains things very well. I had a successful surgery that helped me regain my life back. I'm so grateful to them.

If you think you need help from a neurosurgeon I don’t think you can find a better one than Dr. Johans. I am a Dentist, my hands are my livelihood. I have battled neck issues for a few years and had reached the point I started losing strength and feeling in one hand with unbearable nerve pain. I was assured that Dr Johans would be conservative in his approach and if treatment was needed he would get it right. Dr. Johans was recommended to me by a colleague who also had back surgery for a herniated disk. I was having a hard time getting an appointment with a different neurosurgeon that my doctor had referred me to, even though I was having terribly bad paid down my leg and my foot was numb, I could barely walk. I asked for a referral to Dr. Johans instead, and in contrast, he and his staff were very responsive. They got me an appointment right away, and Dr. Johans saw me on what was supposed to be his day off and scheduled surgery for the next day, which was not a usual surgery day for him. He made me feel like the symptoms I was having were the emergency concern that I thought they were, where as the other neurosurgeon office didn’t seem to care. He also did the surgery at Treasure Valley hospital and the staff there are excellent. Dr. Johans took the time to make sure I understood what was going to happen and patiently answered any questions, and then asked if I had more question. I did not feel rushed like I sometimes do in a doctors office. The surgery helped immensely with my leg pain and my strength is coming back. After the surgery any time I had a question and called his office his PA would call me back that same morning. I felt well taken care of by Dr. Johans and his staff.

I was denied initial consultation by Dr. Johans upon a 2nd referral request, only due to a misunderstanding that I thought he was only able to restart the Botox injections vs an actual surgery consult I SO DESPERATELY NEED on my neck ASAP. He said he could schedule with me just back in Feb, for my neck the first time for migraines but this time he said, "he just didn't want to get involved with this one." SERIOUSLY?!? No other reason and I am scared because it's gotten so much worse in such a short time. And if I don't get this fixed soon, I may not be able to walk again or fully like my dad possibly even worse. I have been a type 1 diabetic for 47 years. I have a degerative disc disorder and my cervical spine was previously fused from C3 - C6 by another surgeon. In February 2019 I began experiencing increased pain in my neck that radiated into my shoulder blades and down my left arm. My left hand was weak with numbness and tingling of the ring and pinky fingers. The MRI showed another disc herniation impinging the C8 nerve root. I decided to research neurosurgeons for this next surgery. I was very impressed with Dr Johan's bio and ratings. One of the things that I liked about him was that he loves helping his patients become more functional and as pain free as possible. It was easy to see that he's passionate about his work. At my first appointment with Dr Johans he explained to me that I needed an anterior discectomy and fusion from C6 to T2 and my surgery was going to be complicated due to how far down he was going to have to go with the fusion. My short neck wasn't going to make it easy either! He explained that it might not be possible to go that far down with an anterior approach and if not I'd have to have a second surgery done through the back side. I had the surgery on May 1, 2019 and YES...thanks to Dr Johan's dedication and skill, he was successful at fusing all the way down to T2! I am extremely pleased with the quality of care I received from. Dr Johans, Meghan Galloway PA-C, and Kelly Roberts.

I had two-level disc replacement and am ecstatic at the results! The pain from the disc herniations is gone while maintaining full range of motion in my neck. Working on regaining arm strength, but was back at work within 1 1/2 weeks rather than months with a fusion (the other option). After a cervical MRI, my primary care physician let me know that I needed to see a neurosurgeon.and she tasked me with finding one for myself. A friend suggested going to Boise and so I began looking at the doctors there. Initially I was drawn to Dr. Johans after watching a Youtube video of him speaking at a Catholic men's retreat and he was sharing the experience that changed his practice forever. I wanted a surgeon who depends on God for his skill.. This coupled with his immaculate track record as a neurosurgeon convinced me that this is who I wanted to do my surgery. Within the first visit, he quickly identifies me as family and his advice was the same he would give his wife, if she were in the same situation with the same diagnosis. Dr. Johans is a great educator. He provides much insight and knowledge regarding neurosurgery topics on his website with the use of small video clips. They encourage you to peruse his website and listen to the videos prior to your visit with Dr. Johans so that you have a good knowledge base and can ask good questions. Dr. Johans' entire team is amazing. Kelly, his office assistant, answered my emails within 2-5 minutes each time I sent her a question. Meghan, his surgery assistant and PA, is very knowledgeable and skillful. On the day of surgery, either Meghan or Dr. Johans or both of them together spoke with me and my husband no less than six times -- each time explaining some aspect of the expectation of the surgery and recovery process. I was pleased that Dr. Johans was mindful of my other diagnoses as he cared for me. He was always open and honest in answering questions. He patiently answered all of my questions prior to surgery. Because it was over 30 days since my initial office visit, I had to be seen in the office again prior to surgery (the day before). I was glad for this second visit. At the first visit, he came across as pretty intense and didn't seem like the smiling man shown on his website. However, in retrospect, I understand his seriousness. At the initial visit, he has about 60 minutes to peruse your medical records, take your history, exam you and review your imaging in order to make a decision regarding your situation. That decision needs to be right. You should desire to have a neurosurgeon who is taking your situation entirely serious. Due to the nature of neurosurgery -- working at close proximity to your spinal cord and nerve roots --- Dr. Johans has to be certain of what is the best surgery for you and whether it is best to not do surgery. His decision carries a lot of weight. But at the second office visit, he was a little more laid back and smiled -- and answered all of my questions. So yes, it is true - He is very focused and serious when he is diagnosing your problem and deciding on treatment -- but I would want nothing less in a neurosurgeon. When you are his patient and he is meeting with you -- you have his full attention. He takes his care very seriously -- and I'm so thankful for that. When I returned for my second office visit, he walked in and said, "Hey kiddo, how are you doing". I liked that he owned me that way -- he was committed to me and I sensed that as his patient. We live about 4 hours from Boise. After I was discharged from the hospital, spent an extra day in Boise and then returned home, I had a question that I asked via email to Kelly. She responded immediately and said she would have Meghan call me. Within a fairly short time, Meghan called and answered my questions. Two days later, Meghan called just to check on me and see how I was doing. Seriously my entire neck surgery experience could not have been any better. I am totally pleased with Dr. Johans and recommend him to anyone needing neurosurgery. I loved Treasure Valley Hospital and the care received there. Meghan Galloway and Kelly Roberts are the best and always have the patient in mind. Also I have done amazingly well following surgery. I never imagined that it would go so smoothly. I recently had a life saving surgery performed by Dr. Johans. I had severe stenosis in the central canal in C-4 and C-5, C-3 and C-6 were also in horrible condition and full of bone spurs as well. In C-4 and C-5 the spinal chord was being choked out due to the severe stenosis and Dr. Johans didn't understand how I walked into the examination room on my first visit. Dr. Johans told me if I just fell wrong, I would either be dead or a quadriplegic. He showed me on the M.R.I.'s where all the problems were and in a very clear and understandable manner, he walked me through the entire operation. I needed to have C-3 through C-7 fused. Dr. Johans was my third Dr.'s opinion and all three Dr.'s I had seen agreed that is what would need to be done. With all the wonderful reviews and with so many respectable people recommending Dr. Johans. I was leaning towards having him perform the operation. Dr. Johans did warn me that due to the amount of pressure he would apply to the nerves removing the bone growths I may experience the temporary loss of function in both arms. Which I did loose about 90% of use in my left arm. Now that I am almost three months out from the operation my left arm is starting to respond to commands again. I do believe I will get full use of my arm back. I can honestly say that it is not fun waiting, but what is the old cliché patients is a virtue! Tough to do but it is true. Dr. Johans basically has perfected this type of operation and has helped design some of the new types of hardware being used in this procedure, and he has very custom hardware built just for him. Then he told me that out of the thousands of unions he has done he has never lost a patient, had any infections, nor had he ever nicked a spinal chord, nerve bundle or nerve chord. With Dr. Johans impeccable track record and very obvious deep spiritual and religious beliefs and genuine love for people, it was a no brainer for me. I found the neurosurgeon and the person that I completely trust to do the operation. Dr. Johans also understood I have a rather unique situation with how I got me neck broke. He also knew that I would be a self payee with no insurance and that I am self employed and sole proprietor. Dr. Johans worked with me financially he agreed to do the operation for a greatly reduced price, with cash up front. He stuck to his word and he saved me tens of thousands of dollars. Dr. Johans has the understanding and integrity of a Saint, and I can not praise him enough!!! Every step of the way from the initial visit to getting the operation done was a very positive experience for me. He and his entire team from Megan his P.A. to Kelly a.k.a. (The Boss) are salt of the earth type of people. I trust them completely and will recommend every one to go here first for any neurological problems. Here are my before and after pictures, look at the symmetry of the hardware how evenly spaced the vertebra are and how much of the cervical openings for the nerves feeding my arms were opened up. I have been a chiropractor for 30 years and never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would be the one getting neck fusion surgery. However, after getting rear-ended four different times over a 25 year period, a spur had grown so large that it was putting pressure on my nerve and I had an electric-like sensation in the side of my neck and ear. I was very apprehensive about having surgery. But Dr Johans came highly recommended from my colleagues so I went ahead in December of 2018. I had the surgery early in the morning and recovered during the day until early evening when Dr johans came to my room to check on me. I was surprised that I didn't have any pain in my neck. I did have some pain in my throat from being intubated but didn't have the electric like sensation on the side of my neck anymore and didn't have any neck pain from the surgery. I then asked him if they gave me a long-acting pain medication during the surgery and he replied that anything they gave me would have worn off by then. I told him that I didn't have any neck pain and I was very surprised after having screws drilled into my bones. He then told me that 90% of his patients have the same experience! He also did my carpal tunnel surgery because of all the abuse I gave it doing Chiropractic for 30 years! My left hand was waking me up in the middle of the night about 5 times a night! So between the hand and the neck I was really having a lot of difficulty trying to sleep! This surgery was also without any complications and my symptoms went away immediately! I have regained a lot of the strength in my thumb and have had no numbness or tingling since the surgery! Needless to say, I would highly recommend Dr Johans! I also recommend him for any of my patients who have reached that point in their life when that is the only option. Dr. Johans has the philosophy that we should all stay away from him or any other surgeon until we absolutely need the surgery! I highly agree! And I highly recommend Dr Johans!

Many years ago, I had an L5-S1 disc herniation that was pretty critical. I was referred to Dr. Johans for a consultation and MRI. After the MRI, I was recommended for surgery.
