Professional staff is wonderful and caring but folks at the reception desk are lacking. Inefficiency and absence of common sense are major shortcomings. One cause might be the frequent turnover of staffing but this still does not excuse what happens. If I were to rank the professional staff (dentist, hygienist, dental assistant), it would be 5 stars. Reception desk brings down the overall rating.

I have been going to Hawaii Family Dental for over five years. I enjoy the office staff, hygienists and dentists. Dr Sullivan is very excellent and articulate in his work. He explains the caveats of his practice well and credits his detailed care to his mentors. I feel he has a desire to be the best at his craft in dentistry. I just had a crown placed perfectly and without pain. Thank you Dr. Sullivan and Hawaii Family Dental!

Not a good dental office. They have 9 doctors and one hygienist. Both my wife and I have had our cleaning appointments canceled at the last minute. I sat in the office for my appointment for a half hour. I ask what was going on. They crossed my name off the sign-in sheet and didn't call me to the desk. They said my appointment was canceled. I showed them the text I received the day before reminding me of the appointment. They said it was an automated text that they couldn't stop. I do not recommend this office.

Dr. Coleen Sullivan was a pleasant surprise. We moved here from Maui and have been with Hawaii Family Dental forever. Our confidence level was eroding in Maui but it is back up in the 5 star level after our appointment yesterday. Peter is in good hands with a doctor who knows her stuff and has a kindness about her that we both appreciate. As for the staff... they were courteous, helpful and efficient. I'm a newbe but no complaints here!

Everyone is very friendly and efficient. The dentist was so kind and gentle. My Grand daughter doesn't mind going to the dentist at all. She doesn't even complain about the injections she has gotten. She looks forward to going to the dentist even if she knows she is going to have a procedure done. They have a movie of choice projected on to the ceiling to keep the child distracted. Great office for children because they develop a positive attitude about going to the dentist which will carry on into adulthood. I would highly recommend this office.

Love this place. Great doctors and staff. My kids see Dr. Matt. First time ever my kids dentist let me in the room during their visit. He even sang to my daughter and made her smile! Recommend seeing him hands down if you have kids. Check out their toy machine for keikis. Awesome.

They are over priced, play bait and switch. They tell you that "you are covered by your insurance and your copay is $ 25" over the telephone, then say "no you are not covered and you need to pay over $ 250 today" when you arrive. I noticed health insurance charges for procedures they never did on my health insurance (EOB) for prior visits.

My cleaning appointment was cancelled twice and they attempted to cancel a third time until I expressed my extreme displeasure of their customer service. Finally after 9mos I was given an appointment, 5 mos after my scheduled cleaning appointment. On two occasions, I spoke w/a person who I could not understand her/his English and she/he kept repeating her/himself like a recording apologizing for canceling my appointment again. I have been with this office for 8 yrs and have watched people/staff come and go. Hearing the employees dissatisfaction w/care n management. Would I recommend this office to others, only if you have no other options.

Last week I saw Dr. Matt after not being happy with the dental office upstairs. I think their name is genital Dental. Dr. Matt was amazing with my kids. My kids have bad teeth, pretty much my fault cause I don't think I was giving the right food to them when they were small. 2 of them needed fillings and one of them had to have their puka teeth pulled. Dr. Matt was understanding and told me how we can get them back on track. After hearing what i needed to hear, i'm glad Dr. Matt took time to coach me. He didn't judge and he was pretty compassionate. My kids loved their visit. Thanks guys and aunty Ida and val. You guys give a mom like me hope.

Every thing was great EXCEPT for some reason it took 35 min for me to wait my turn to “sign out” after the appointment. I was first directed back to the main waiting area by front door. After 10 mins of waiting there, I was told to go to the back room to sign out. When I got to the back waiting area I then had to wait an additional 25 min. I was almost going to walk out. Who wants to wait 35 mins AFTER your appointment. System needs to be faster.

Dentist was informative as she worked on cleaning my teeth of issues and watch areas. Sanitary, but not as much as CT dentist office which had light grips and tools were all wrapped. CT office also had special tools for implants for cleaning. X-rays went well as I told them I am a gagger. Dentist Colleen was sweet and understanding.

I suffer dental phobia. It’s a real problem for me and there have been years of no visits to the dentist. Even for cleaning I have those white knuckle experiences. However at HFD I just had a “good” experience! My hygienist was SO nice, professional, and gentle! Even though you can’t really talk when you’re in a chair, he kept up a conversation that really helped! I was given the option of having the same hygienist for my next cleaning too

Kailua-Kona HFDC, Big Island. My cleaning session was the best I've ever had. Jeanette was thorough, quick, friendly, responsive. My teeth looked better than they have in years after she was through. She answered several questions I had about dental care, too. She made my teeth feel so good that I've decided to get cleanings 3 times/year instead of 2 times! Not only that, but when I stopped at the front desk to pay my bill and make my next appointment, they gave me a long stemmed rose out of the bouquet on the desk. What a great experience!

I missed an appointment the day after Christmas and was billed $100!? This was the first appointment I ever missed and it was to check my tooth extracted site. $100 for a missed appointment is ridiculous! A month before this missed appointment I was going to have 2 wisdom teeth pulled but was contacted saying only 1 tooth would be covered. I asked that we only remove the tooth that was covered by my insurance and made an appointment for that 1 tooth. When I showed up for the appointment the person behind the check in desk tells me “so we’re just going to pull both teeth today”. I asked about the insurance coverage and she told me “yeah so the dentist is going to try and fight for them to cover it”. They never asked if I was okay with this, just told me they were going to do it. Luckily the hygienist noticed the issue with the paperwork, came out and asked what was going on. She told them they needed to inform me I would be stuck with the bill If the insurance refused to cover it and they told her that they had informed me of that WHICH THEY DID NOT! I would not advise anyone to go to this office!

Dr. Barry Sullivan is an outstanding, down to earth Dentist. Patients are moved through the clinic quickly in assembly line style. However, getting a teeth cleaning appointment is extremely difficult and the billing/bookkeeping system leaves a lot to be desired. It would also be great if Family Dental had their on lab on the premises.

My almost 4yr old son had a lot of work to be done and was nervous about him being under anesthesia but Dr. Griffith walked us through the entire process and made us feel comfortable about the procedure. Yesterday, 9/12/2018 I had a dental appointment for a cleaning. The receptionist in the front office was very rued to patients that stepped up to the desk. One elderly woman who clearly was in need of service was treated very badly and told she could not see a dentist unless she had an appointment. The young receptionist, rolled her eyes and clicked her tongue frequently. Another person behind the desk told the woman she would see what she could do to get her seen. The young receptionist was clearly upset by those actions and rolled her eyes, looked at the gentleman next to her and said "really?". I was called in for my appointment. I had a very good experience with the hygienist. And when I cam out to pay my bill, the young receptionist looked at me and told me that I had an outstanding bill of $210 that I have failed to pay and told me that I had been billed by them for that amount multiple time. I have never received a bill from Hawaii Family Dentist for that amount or it would have been paid. I told her that I had not received a bill for that amount, she rolled her eyes and said "whatever!". So I told her that she had a very bad attitude and that I had noticed how she treated clients before me and did not appreciate her attitude. She rolled her eyes! I paid my bill, including the extra $210 which I don't feel I owe, but I paid it. I told her that I would no longer be coming back to Hawaii Family Dental because of her poor attitude and the way she treated everyone who came to the desk. She said "Fine, I really don't care what you do, have a nice day!". I told her to have a nice day as well, if she could. I have changed dentist offices and have requested my records be sent to West Hawaii Community Health Center for my future dental care. Martha Gail Fujimoto
